Electricity is something we use every day without thinking about it. However, this wasn’t always the case. The story of electricity began thousands of years ago with simple discoveries.
The ancient Greeks found that when they rubbed (摩擦) amber (琥珀) with cloth, it could attract small objects. They thought it was like a magnet (磁体), but it was actually static electricity (静电). The ancient Egyptians discovered electric fish in the Nile River and called them “Thunder of the Nile”.
In the 17th century, William Gilbert studied the difference between magnets and static electricity, creating the word “electrica”. Later, Benjamin Franklin conducted experiments that proved lightning was a form of electricity. He also studied how to store electric charge (电荷).
Alessandro Volta made the first battery using layers of two different metals. This important invention provided steady (稳定的) electric power. Michael Faraday then used Volta’s ideas to build the first machines that could power things with electricity and create electricity.
In 1879, Thomas Edison created the modern light bulb, improving earlier designs. Two years later, his colleague Lewis Latimer made it more practical by inventing a longer-lasting filament (灯丝). These inventions changed the way we live and led to many more discoveries that shape our modern world.
1. What did the ancient Greeks discover about electricity?
A. Magnets attracting metal. B. Static electricity from amber.
C. Lightning in thunderstorms. D. Electric fish in the Nile River.
2. According to the passage, what did William Gilbert do?

C. He found fish that produced electricity. D. He compared magnets with static electricity.
3. What’s the relationship between Edison’s and Latimer’s work?
A. Their work had no relationship. B. Edison built on Latimer’s work.
C. They made the same discovery. D. Latimer improved Edison’s design.
4. How is the information in this passage organized?
A. In order of the location. B. In order of time.
C. In order of the country. D. In order of importance.

B
There is a great need to search for clean and renewable(可再生的) energy to meet our needs. It seems that wind energy is a good choice. Do you know anything about wind energy?
The first advantage of wind energy is that it truly is a renewable resource. No matter how much wind we use to produce electricity, we will never reduce the supply(供应) of wind. This is its greatest advantage compared with non-renewable resources like coal or oil. Second, wind energy is a clean source of energy, which means it produces environment-friendly electricity. What’s more, the large towers, which provide the base for the wind turbines(涡轮机), don’t take up lots of space. They can share land with farms.
However, each coin has two sides. That is to say wind energy does have some disadvantages. Wind does not provide supply of energy without stopping. Even the windiest places on earth have periods of calm. If there isn’t a strong wind, wind turbines are not able to produce electricity. The large blades of wind turbines can be very dangerous for birds and bats. The turbines cause noise pollution. It can also be bad to people living around.
Although wind energy has disadvantages, its advantages shouldn’t be forgotten.
5. People search for ________ to meet their needs according to the passage.

B. Wind can't provide energy without stopping
C. The blades of wind turbines can be very dangerous
D. The turbines cause noise pollution while working
9. According to the passage, we know that ________.
A. wind energy is a non-renewable resource
B. the greatest advantage of wind energy is renewable
C. the windiest areas never have periods of clam
D. wind turbines can't be dangerous for birds and bats
【答案】5. D 6. C 7. A 8. A 9. B

8. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. Wind energy also has some disadvantages
B. Wind can't provide energy without stopping
C. The blades of wind turbines can be very dangerous
D. The turbines cause noise pollution while working
9. According to the passage, we know that ________.
A. wind energy is a non-renewable resource
