The school year began. As president of the recycling club, Scott was thinking about new activities to encourage other students to become more enthusiastic (热心的) about recycling. His club had helped to recycle a lot of waste for the past five years and he hoped that this year they would do even better.
Scott went home one day and looked online, hoping to find ideas for events the club could organize at school. During his research, he learned that the amount (数量) of electronic waste, or e-waste, is increasing rapidly. Scott was upset with himself for not noticing this problem sooner. At that moment, he began to develop a plan.
“There is a special project I want us to work on this term,” Scott announced (宣布) at the recycling club meeting the next day. “We have all heard about e-waste, but recently I learned about the bad effects it’s having on our environment.” He went on to tell the club members that he wanted them to organize an e-waste drive—a day when students and their families could drop off unwanted electronics to be recycled. “Now let’s get to work!”
For several weeks, the recycling club was busy preparing for the upcoming e-waste drive, or e-drive as it was soon called.
The big day finally arrived, and Scott was nervous. He and the other members arrived at school early to make sure that everything would go smoothly. Everyone waited eagerly, hoping that students of the school would take part in the event.
It wasn’t long before the first cars pulled into the school parking lot. After a while, more people arrived. Phones, TV sets, computers and keyboards soon began piling up (堆积) .
At the end of the event, Scott heard someone suggest that the school should have an e-drive event every term. Scott smiled, realizing that a simple action could truly have a lasting influence.

“I believe my son is the best, and dad misses you a lot.” This was a message from a stranger to a student who didn’t pass the Graduate School Entrance Examination (研究生入学考试).
The only link (联系) between these two strangers, who seemed like father and son, was a phone number. The number was used by the student’s dad who died three years ago, but later it had a new owner. The student didn’t know that. When he failed the exam, he was really sad and couldn’t help missing his father, so he sent a message to the phone number. In the message, he told his father how sad he was and how much he missed his father. He never thought he would get a reply. But to his surprise, his phone rang and there was a message from that number. “It’s okay, son! No one can always win, but you’ll grow up little by little after failures. Work hard and keep going! You’ll be the best in the future.” The student was really touched. He quickly sent a “thank you” message to the phone number.
The new owner of the phone number, Mr. Gao, said he thought the message was sent by mistake at first. After reading it carefully, he knew the young man must be in trouble and needed some encouragement. He decided to reply to the message after thinking twice. You might have heard about identity theft (身份盗窃): it means a thief gets enough of someone’s information to commit fraud (诈骗). Why should people care about it? Because recovering a stolen identity can be a hard process. Imagine that someone opens a credit card in your name, gets a cell phone number in your name, or buys things using a credit card that has your name on it.
ID thieves can be creative about getting your information. There are some low-tech ways they get it: sometimes they steal rubbish, going through it to find personal information, or they steal mail.
There are high-tech ways, too: ID thieves might put software onto your computer secretly. The software, called badware, let a thief see everything on your computer, and record everything you type on your computer. Unluckily, even if you’re really careful with your personal information, thieves can still get your personal information. Sometimes, they get into computer systems at shops, schools, hospitals or businesses. They look for personal information to use or sell to other thieves.
It’s pretty easy for you and your family to stop a thief stealing your identity. You can start with the low-tech defenses (防御). Be careful with your mail and rubbish. And be sure to take care of your wallet, or your backpack. It’s especially important not to carry your Social Security card with you. Keep it in a safe place at home.
Practice some higher-tech defenses, too: protect your computer by turning on an up-to-date firewall (防火墙). Once you’re online, be careful with your personal information. When you get emails or pop-ups on your computer, don’t respond automatically (自动响应). Stop and think before you click—it could help keep your information private, and keep badware off your computer.
32. What can we infer from the second paragraph?
A It is easy for your mail to be stolen.
B. Even some useless things can make you face the danger of identity theft.
C. We cannot throw rubbish in order to protect our personal information.
D. We should put away our mail to avoid identity theft.
33. What can we learn from the underlined sentence in the third paragraph?
A. It’s impossible to find a way to stop identity theft.
B. People can protect their personal information as long as they are careful enough.
C. Thieves are very good at finding ways to collect people’s personal information.
D. It’s hard for a thief to collect your personal information.
34. Which best shows the writer’s idea about identity theft?
A. Identity theft will finally be stopped as computer software becomes better.
B. Identity theft is a serious problem that can be reduced with a few simple habits.
C. Identity theft happens more commonly to adults because they are not good at using computers.
D. Identity theft is an easy problem that can be dealt within a second.
35 What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

A. It is easy for your mail to be stolen.

【答案】例文
Never Give Up
Hello, everyone. I’m really happy to share my ideas on never giving up with all of you here. Everyone meets difficulties on the way to success. But we can’t give up easily when facing difficulties.
I got a big one three years ago. I had trouble with English speaking. My pronunciation was poor. It made me nervous to speak in front of others because I worried about making mistakes. After noticing that, my English teacher Mr. Zhang advised me to listen to recordings and try to repeat after them every day. I followed his suggestions and my pronunciation improved a lot. I even gave a short speech in front of my classmates with his encouragement and help!
After that, I became more confident and I realized that overcoming difficulties helped me grow up. And now, I’m willing to face it bravely whenever I meet something difficult. Never give up and we can make it.
