Here's the story of my growth over the past year. If anyone is inspired (激励) by this, that's wonderful.
I'd been stuck as this under-confident, fat and just frightened girl for years and years and years. Since I was a little girl, I'd been stuck like this, and I had lived a life where I'd be afraid of everything. But then it all started changing. Something clicked, and in over a period of 6 months I finally managed to stick to one of my diets, bringing me from overweight straight down to underweight. This proved ( 证明) that I could change myself.
One single time, I heard about a public speaking thing going on at my university, and for the first time, I managed to keep up the courage to go there. For the first time I was able to share my story, and able to do it in front of so many people possibly judging (评判) me, and suddenly all the fears about speaking publicly started vanishing. I never felt more confident.
This taught me I could get rid (去除) of my fears. It was from that point on that my road to change went from a rocky mess to a full-on empty highway.
Using the fact that I could change, and that I could get rid of my fears, I started working on them one by one. My fear of talking to strangers ,my fear of asking simple questions, my fear of hanging out with people, my fear of being myself... All of them were gone. And I still continue to progress to this day. I've never stopped.
4. When did the author know she could change herself?

C. The author felt empty in face of fear.
D. The author started changing rapidly.
7. What's the purpose of the text?
A. To inspire the readers.
B. To prove a new idea.
C. To teach how to speak publicly.
D. To show how to get rid of fears.
C
Are you preparing for a big test? If so, you may want to play some basketball in between hitting the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels (血管), including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr Cameron claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better. She says, “ While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can really cause physical changes in the brain.”
The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. With babies, even a little movement can show big results.
Older people can beef up (加强) their brain as well. Scientists from 11 universities studied a group of seniors ranging in age from 70 to 79. Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 per cent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for seniors should involve some complexity (复杂). Learning some new skills or motions, such as with yoga or Tai Ji, helps open up memory paths in the brain that may not have used for a long time.
For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main goal is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as three hours of exercise a week.
8. The passage is mainly about _________.
A. how to exercise B. how exercise helps the brain
C how to get good scores in a test D. how the brain can change
9. According to the passage, what is the connection between exercise and brain development?
A. Exercise makes us happy. B. The brain needs special mental exercise.
C. The more exercise, the bigger the brain. D. Exercise helps the brain develop better.
10. The least amount of exercise required to gain any benefit is __________.
A. Three hours per week B. Forty hours per week
C. Three hours per day D. Forty hours per month
11. Why does the author think that yoga is fit for seniors?
A. It is easy to learn. B. It can be done in groups.
C. It does not increase the heart rate. D. It can learn some new skills.
D
This summer has brought extreme heat and droughts to places around the world. The droughts are leading to serious problems and the effects of the droughts are likely to be felt for years. Droughts aren’t new, but Earth’s rising temperatures because of global warming are making them much harder to avoid.
The drought in the Horn of Africa may be the most serious situation. For several years, the area has had very little rain during the rainy seasons. The dry conditions have killed millions of farm animals and destroyed the crops of farmers.
The drought is causing energy problems in Europe, too. The low water levels have cut the amount of hydroelectric power that can be produced. Some rivers are so low that the heavy boats that carry coal can’t travel on them.
Farmers in California and Arizona have been hit particularly hard. California has put limits on water use across the state. Now water is being limited in other places. When there are water limits, farmers aren’t able to grow as many crops. That can drive up food prices, and that affects everyone.
China is facing similar problems. The drought has dried up much of the water in the Yangtze, China’s longest river. That has cut the amount of energy produced by the world’s largest dam by 40%.
China hasn’t been able to produce enough energy, since millions of people are using electricity to keep cool. The government is calling on the public to turn off the air conditioner when it is not too hot. The country is trying to make it rain by shooting chemicals into clouds. But this is an uncertain and temporary response.
There are no easy solutions to any of these droughts. It took years to create the climate crisis, and it will take a long time to get it under control. For now, governments and people will need to carefully manage water supplies and other resources to limit the damage as much as possible.
12. What has been affected by droughts according to the passage?
A. Technology.
B. Transportation.
C. Education.
D. Tourism.
13. What measures have been taken to deal with droughts in China?
A. Bringing water from other countries.
B. Finding replacement for rain water.
C. Limiting the use of drinking water.
D. Controlling the use of electricity.
14. How might the author feel about the fight against drought?
A. Concerned.
B Satisfied.
C. Disappointed.
D. Optimistic.
15. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Worldwide Droughts Appeared as New Problems
B. China Is also Facing the Serious Drought Problem
C. Droughts Cause Problems Around the World
D. Many Reasons Lead to the Drought Problem

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ollie Simmons was good at maths, but Ruby Riley wasn’t. Well, Ruby didn’t think she was. She sat next to Ollie and so she just copied him. This was the best way she had found to do maths and she didn’t have to think at all.
One day the teacher said, “We will be having a maths test after lunch.” Ruby felt there were butterflies in the stomach. “Can I copy off you?” she whispered to Ollie. Ollie thought for a minute. “What will you give me?” he whispered back. Ruby showed Ollie a stone she had. It was round and smooth and the colour of the sea. “OK!” he said, “Give me the stone, and then you can copy my answers.” Ollie got full marks in the maths test and so did Ruby. Their names went on the top of the maths champion chart.
Every week there was a maths test and every week Ollie and Ruby got full marks together. Ollie had to share the top place with Ruby, but it was worth it. He had a torch, a key chain, a golf ball and a gift box!
One day, there was a maths test again. This time, Ruby picked a watch, thinking everything would go as usual—Ollie would let her copy and they would be on the top of the chart together again. But she was wrong. The headmaster came into Ruby’s class. “I want to see Ollie Simmons,” she said. Ollie was gone for a long time. Then the door opened. It was the headmaster again. “Ruby Riley,” she said, “Come with me, please.” Ruby felt like a bird in a cage—there was no way to escape. The headmaster told Ruby that every lunchtime for five weeks she had to do maths. “You have to learn to think for yourself,” she said. “And Ollie has to learn a lesson, too. He’s going to teach you.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Hanging her head down, Ruby felt so regretful for getting Ollie into trouble.

C. how to get good scores in a test D. how the brain can change
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11.

For several years the area has had very little rain during the rainy seasons.
A. Concerned.
B. Satisfied.
C. Disappointed.
D. Optimistic.
15. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Worldwide Droughts Appeared as New Problems
B. China Is also Facing the Serious Drought Problem
C. Droughts Cause Problems Around the World
D Many Reasons Lead to the Drought Problem
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. C

【答案】参考范文
Hanging her head down, Ruby felt so regretful for getting Ollie into trouble. She realized it was her fault that put them into such a shameful situation. “I am so sorry that I’d like to make a sincere apology to you.” Ruby said to Ollie with tears rolling down her cheeks. Hearing this, Ollie felt ashamed with his cheeks burning and said, “I should also take the responsibility for the matter. To make up for this fault, I will try my best to help you.” Ruby wiped her tears and was determined to spare no effort to learn maths with Ollie.
Ollie proved to be a good teacher for Ruby. He was always ready to help whenever Ruby met with difficulties. As time went by, with the assistance of Ollie, Ruby gradually made great progress in maths. Eventually, they both got full marks in the final examination once again. The headmaster praised them for the progress they had made. It was at the moment that they really felt proud of themselves. What an unforgettable and meaningful experience, which taught them a lesson of honesty and true friendship.
