Many scientists believe that our love of sugar may
actually be an addiction(上瘾) . When we eat or drink
sugary foods, the sugar enters our blood and affects the
parts of our brain that make us feel good. Then the good
feeling goes away, leaving us wanting more. All tasty
foods do this, but sugar has a particularly strong effect. In
this way, it is in fact an addictive drug(毒品), one that
doctors recommend(推荐) we all cut down on.
“ It seems like every time I study an illness and trace
(追踪) a path to the first cause, I find my way back to
sugar,” says scientist Richard Johnson. One-third of
adults worldwide have high blood pressure, and up to 347
million have diabetes(糖 尿 病 ) . Why? “ Sugar, we
believe, is one of the culprits, if not the major culprit,”
says Johnson.
Our bodies are designed to survive on very little
sugar. Early humans often had very little food, so our
bodies learned to be very efficient(有效的) in storing sugar
as fat. In this way, we had energy stored for when there was
no food. But today, most people have more than enough. So
the very thing that once saved us may be killing us.
So what is the solution? Its obvious that we need to
eat less sugar. The trouble is, in todays world, its
extremely difficult to avoid. From breakfast cereals (谷
物) to after-dinner desserts, our foods are increasingly
filled with it. Some producers even use sugar to replace
taste in foods that are said as low in fat. So while the foods
appear to be healthier, large amounts of sugar are often
added.
But some people are fighting back against sugar and
trying to create a healthier environment. Many schools are
replacing sugary desserts with healthier options, like fruit.
44
Other schools are trying to encourage exercise by building
facilities(设施) like tracks so students and others in the
community can exercise. The battle has not yet been lost.

When you think about a factory, what do you
imagine first? Do you picture lots of workers doing the
same thing over and over again without stopping? 36
Nowadays, because of super cool technologies like
artificial intelligence (AI, 人工智能), the internet of
things, cloud computing and big data(大数据), factories
are becoming smarter. 37
Teway Food Group, a company in Chengdu,
Sichuan, makes tasty seasonings(调料) . There, robots
do most of the work in their clever factory. First, the
robots get and mix the ingredients (材料) in line with
their recipes(食谱) . After that, the ingredients go into a
smart cooking system that carefully watches and controls
the temperatures to make sure the seasonings taste really
good. 38 The vice(副) president of the company,
Yu Zhiyong, told The Paper, “Thanks to the smart factory,
we have been able to make things 40 percent cheaper. ”
39 Baidu created a smart safety assistant called
Du Anan to make sure workers are safer in factories. It
gives fast answers to safety questions from workers and
also looks at safety problems, helping managers work with
dangers and risks quickly. Thanks to Du Anan, a big
chemical company called Daxie Petrochemical can now
deal with accidents 50 percent faster than before.
40 In line with the “Made in China 2025” plan,

Dear Miss Liu,
Hello! I would like to be a volunteer in the School Folk Cultural
Festival. I think this activity is of great importance as it can help
international students better understand Chinese folk culture.
I have several advantages. I am good at communicating with people
and have rich experience as a volunteer. I also have a deep love for
classical instruments and some knowledge of calligraphy. I believe I can
explain it well to them.
For this activity, I suggest we prepare some small gifts related to folk
culture. Also, we could experience some folk culture in person, such as
allowing students to try on Hanfu or learn some simple steps of lion
dance.
I sincerely hope to contribute to this festival.

Reading makes me change.
Two years ago, I used to play computer games all day and was not
interested in reading. But my father made a difference to me. Whenever
he met a good book, he shared it with me and read it together with me. In
this way, books help me open my eyes to the outside world and little by
little, I knew the importance of reading and fell in love with it. I began to
study hard and make a great effort to achieve my dream.
Reading is just a small step for me, but it has changed my life and
will bring me a bright future.
