Although the piano keys come in black and white, the music it produces is full of color. Chinese pianist Tian Jiaxin explores creative performances and crossover cooperations with traditional Chinese music, with the hope of bringing the music of the East to the Western world.
Tian attended regular school instead of studying at a music school in her childhood. This enabled her to absorb China's rich culture and understand the bigger picture later in her pursuit of a career as a professional pianist. "There's so much to grasp when explaining a piece. What we`re conveying is not only the notes, but the culture behind the music,” Tian said.
As a Chinese pianist, Tian is looking to add more depth to her performances, stressing the contrast between Eastern and Western cultures. "No matter which country I am performing in, I always include Chinese music in my program. With Western pieces, I hope to show the world that a female musician from China can perform the music that they are familiar with and love.” Tian says that she believes her mission is to make China heard on a wider stage.
Tian believes that music is developing over time and that music from different ages has its own unique meaning. "I've found that people's understanding of Chinese music is often limited to certain pieces like Jasmine Flower,” Tian said. "However, there are so many great pieces of Chinese music that are unacquainted outside of China. So, I always try to feature both the time-honored classics of Chinese music and the newly created pieces,” she added.
"Chinese music has the magic to cause resonance (共鸣) with the audience and convey the various and deep culture of Chinese civilization,” Tian said.

C. It delivers rich culture of China. D. It holds little appeal for foreigners.
7. What can be the most suitable title for the text?

In the digital age, the classic red telephone box may no longer be useful, but it’s still one of the most famous symbols of London and the United Kingdom today. It’s hard to pass a red telephone box without feeling admiration. The best-known generation of the phone box, named Kiosk 6 (K6), was designed to celebrate King George V’s Silver Jubilee in 1935. At the time, it was very popular and could be found all over the UK.
While the bright red K6 remains Britain’s most popular design, some less successful models were also produced. There’s a rare (罕见的) cream-coloured K3 phone box, which can be found at London Zoo. A K4, which included a post box and external (外部的) stamp machine, was also introduced for a short time. However, it turned out the stamp machine was too noisy for telephone conversations and the rolls of stamps would often get damp and sticky (潮湿黏乎的) in London’s rainy weather.
In 1980, British Telecom (BT) took over responsibility for telephone boxes, and it was announced that all the telephone boxes would be repainted yellow. Naturally, parts of the British public disagreed strongly with the decision. While some of the red telephone boxes were saved, a large number of K6s were finally replaced (取代) with BT’s new telephone boxes which became more practical but weren’t as attractive as their lovely red cousin.
A movement for reusing K6s has kicked off in recent years due, in part, to BT’s Adopt a Kiosk programme. The classic K6 has been changed into various things across Britain in true make-do-and-mend (修补一下对付使用) spirit, from small lending libraries to ever-changing art shows. While in the age of the smartphone, these classics seem less useful in one sense, they are an important part of British culture. It’ll be a long time before the red telephone box loses its attraction.
8. Why was K6 made?
A. To honor King George V. B. To beautify London’s streets.
C. To serve as a symbol of London. D. To increase the use of digital products.
9. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Some benefits of introducing the phone box. B. Some dos and don’ts of using a phone box.
C. Some easier ways to make a phone box. D. Some less popular phone box models.
10. What happened to K6s after BT was in charge of telephone boxes?
A. They were renamed by BT. B. They were repainted in red.
C. They developed more functions. D. They gave place to BT’s new products.
11. What did the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. K6s can stay in people’s minds. B. K6s are a symbol of British art.
C. K6s saw the rise of the smartphone. D. K6s face huge challenges in the digital age
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. D 11. A
根据第一段“The best-known generation of the phone box, named Kiosk 6 (K6), was designed to celebrate King George V’s Silver Jubilee in 1935. (最著名的电话亭一代,名为Kiosk 6 (K6),是为了纪念1935年乔治五世银禧而设计的)”可知,K6是为了纪念乔治五世而设计的。故选A。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“While the bright red K6 remains Britain’s most popular design, some less successful models were also produced. There’s a rare (罕见的) cream-coloured K3 phone box, which can be found at London Zoo. A K4, which included a post box and external (外部的) stamp machine, was also introduced for a short time. However, it turned out the stamp machine was too noisy for telephone conversations and the rolls of stamps would often get damp and sticky (潮湿黏乎的) in London’s rainy weather.(虽然鲜红色的K6仍然是英国最受欢迎的设计,但也生产了一些不太成功的型号。伦敦动物园有一个罕见的奶油色K3电话亭。K4也推出了一段时间,它包括一个邮箱和一个外部的邮票机。然而,事实证明,邮票机对电话交谈来说太吵了,而且邮票卷在伦敦的雨天经常会变得潮湿和黏糊糊的)”可知,本段主要介绍了一些不太受欢迎的电话亭型号。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“While some of the red telephone boxes were saved, a large number of K6s were finally replaced (取代) with BT’s new telephone boxes which became more practical but weren’t as attractive as their lovely red cousin. (虽然一些红色电话亭被保留了下来,但大量的K6最终被英国电信公司的新电话亭所取代,新电话亭更加实用,但没有它们可爱的红色表亲那么吸引人)”可知,英国电信公司接管电话亭后,K6被英国电信公司的新产品所取代。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“While in the age of the smartphone, these classics seem less useful in one sense, they are an important part of British culture. It’ll be a long time before the red telephone box loses its attraction. (虽然在智能手机时代,这些经典在某种意义上似乎不那么有用了,但它们是英国文化的重要组成部分。红色电话亭要过很长时间才会失去吸引力)”可知,作者想告诉我们K6可以留在人们的脑海中。故选A。

The term “folk song” has been current for over a hundred years, but there is still a good deal of disagreement as to what it actually means. The definition provided by the International Folk Music Council states that folk music is the music of ordinary people, which is passed on from person to person by being listened to rather than learned from the printed page. Other factors that help shape a folk song include: continuity (many performances over a number of years); variation (changes in words and melodies either through artistic interpretation or failure of memory); and selection (the acceptance of a song by the community in which it evolves).
When songs have been subjected to these processes their origin is usually impossible to trace. For instance, if a farm laborer were to make up a song and sing it to a couple of friends who like it and memorize it, possibly when the friends come to sing it themselves one of them might forget some of the words and make up new ones to fill the gap, while the other, perhaps more artistic, might add a few decorative touches to the tune and improve a couple of lines of text. If this happened a few times there would be many different versions, the song’s original composer would be forgotten, and the song would become common property. This constant reshaping and re-creation is the essence of folk music. Consequently, modern popular songs and other published music, even though widely sung by people who are not professional musicians, are not considered folk music. The music and words have been set by a printed or recorded source, limiting scope for further artistic creation. These songs’ origins cannot be covered and therefore they belong primarily to the composer and not to a community.
The ideal situation for the creation of folk music is an isolated rural community. In such a setting folk songs and dances have a special purpose at every stage in a person’s life, from childhood to death. Epic (史诗) tales of heroic deeds, seasonal songs relating to calendar events, and occupational songs are also likely to be sung.
12. Which of the following statements about the term “folk song” is supported by the passage?
A. The International Folk Music Council invented it.
B. It has been used for several centuries.
C. It is considered to be out of date.
D. There is disagreement about its meaning.
13. The author mentions the farm laborer and his friends (paragraph 2) in order to ________.
A. explain how a folk song evolves over time
B. illustrate the importance of music to rural workers
C. show how subject matter is selected for a folk song
D. demonstrate how a community chooses a folk song
14. The author mentions that published music is not considered to be folk music because ________.
A. the songs are generally performed by professional singers
B. the songs attract only the young people in a community
C. the composers write the music in rural communities
D. the original composer can be easily identified
15. What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. Elements that define folk music.
B. Themes commonly found in folk music.
C. Influences of folk music on popular music.
D. The standards of the International Folk Music Council.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. D 15. A

【14题详解】

Honesty Won’t Let You Down
Asad was a 13-year-old boy who was very honest and hardworking. Recently, he had entered a new school, so he had no friends yet. One Monday morning, he was nearly late for school. The night before, his family attended his cousin’s wedding and reached home late, which was why he couldn’t get up on time as usual.
At school, Asad could not pay attention to anything and wanted the bell to ring so that he could buy something to eat. After a few hours, when the bell rang, Asad quickly opened his schoolbag to find his money, but just then he remembered that he had left for school in a hurry in the morning and forgotten to take money. He looked under his books, hoping to find some money but there was nothing.
Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on a bench in front of the canteen. He saw a few of his classmates there, among whom was Fahad. He was one of the richest kids in his class, but he was a very arrogant boy who thought everyone else was a loser. But as Asad was new, he didn’t know much about Fahad.
When he went towards Fahad and asked if he could borrow some money for his lunch, Fahad laughed and said, “I didn’t know you were a loser, maybe a beggar?” Fahad laughed out so loud that other kids also heard it and made fun of the situation. Asad didn’t answer Fahad, and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.
When he reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet. He picked it up and recognized it was Fahad’s, as he remembered Fahad showing it to his friends and telling them that his uncle had bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.

Paragraph 2: Then Fahad said, “Why are you giving it back?”
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Paragraph 1: At first, Asad wanted to keep it a secret and punish Fahad. At least he could afford the lunch now. However, another voice popped up, urging him to give it back to Fahad, which made him feel torn. “I should never keep the wallet at the cost of my honesty, and Fahad would be extremely worried when he found he lost the wallet!” Asad convinced himself. Once he made up his mind, he accelerated his pace and caught Fahad up. “Fahad, it’s your wallet and I found it on the bench.” Taking over the wallet, Fahad stared into Asad’s eyes, surprised and puzzled.
Paragraph 2: Then Fahad said, “Why are you giving it back?” He even looked into his wallet, obviously doubtful about Asad’s act. Asad explained calmly and patiently, “I had originally wanted to keep it secret as a punishment for your arrogance, but being honest matters more to me.” Hearing what Asad had said, Fahad felt his face burning with shame. He hugged Asad, thanking Asad for saving him from the trouble and apologizing to the classmates around for calling them losers. “You are my friend now. Would you like to join me for lunch?” Fahad turned to Asad.

D
