If you were born in the 2000s, you are called the oh-ohs. That would make you young, creative, world-wide, special and smart. Maybe good-looking, too.
Right? But what do other people think about your generation (一代)?
Some adults (成年人) worry that you’re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think you are the “face-down generation” because you use your phone so much. They wonder how you will communicate with your teachers, friends, and family.
Other adults worry that today’s youth (青年) are spoilt (溺爱) and don’t want to face the challenges (挑战) of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents”. They were always there to guide and help their children with a busy program filled with homework and after-school activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, it seems that today’s youth like to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up? Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They seem to like becoming leaders (领导). More young people than ever volunteer to help the neighborhood. There are also excellent young people such as Malala Yousafzai who is the youngest Nobel Prize winner in history. She was born in Pakistan (巴基斯坦) where women shouldn’t read or write. But she stood out and fought for the girl’s rights (权利) to go to school.
So if you’re one of the oh-ohs, there are reasons to be hopeful about the future. Things are becoming better and better for your generation.
11. What is the main purpose (目的) of paragraph 1?
A. To introduce (介绍) the topic (话题). B. To start a discussion.
C. To explain a program. D. To show a social (社会) problem.
12. Which of the following may worry some adults according to the text?
A. Oh-ohs’ poor eyesight. B. Oh-ohs’ busy timetable.
C. Oh-ohs’ shortage (缺少) of independence. D. Oh-ohs’ strong creativity (创造力).
13. Why does the writer call some adults “helicopter parents”?
A. They help their children to face the challenges. B. They guide and plan everything for their children.
C. They do the homework instead of their children. D. They keep them away from after-school activities.
14. What do we know about “the face-down generation” according to paragraph 5?
① helpful② more creative ③ afraid of growing up ④better educated
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ②③④ D. ①②④
15. What can we learn from the text?
A. The writer is one of the oh-ohs. B. Oh-ohs are probably to have a bright future.
C. Oh-ohs will spend less time on phones. D. Oh-ohs will meet more challenges than adults.

“Eco-mermaid” (生态美人鱼) Merle Liivand broke her own world record for swimming with a single fin (鳍) on May 7, 2022. She swam as long as a full marathon in the rough (波涛汹涌的) waters of Biscayne Bay, Florida. She even picked rubbish out of the water as she swam.
Ms Liivand was born in Estonia. As a child, she had health problems, and began swimming to make herself stronger. She was soon taking part in open water swimming competitions, sometimes even in cold water.
Years ago, Ms Liivand moved to Miami, Florida, where she went on swimming in the sea. In one training class, she nearly swallowed (吞) some plastic on the sea. It made her think of the sea animals that faced similar problems every day. She decided to work to make people know more about plastic pollution (塑料污染), which she called a “plastic pandemic”.
Thinking about sea animals gave her the idea of swimming like one. She began swimming with a special single swimming fin with both of her feet in it. This rubbery (橡胶的) fin allowed her to swim by kicking both of her legs together.
“Swimming with the rubbery fin without using my arms is similar to how dolphins and other sea animals swim,” said Ms Liivand. She believed that swimming with a rubbery fin “sent a bigger message”.
The water was rough, and she ran into a few problems, but she didn’t stop. She said, “I kept telling myself that it was not the time to cry.”
To keep her energy up, a friend followed her in a kayak (皮划艇) and gave her food and water from time to time. Along the way, Ms Liivand picked up all the rubbish she found and put it in the kayak. By the end of her marathon, the kayak had held three bags full of rubbish.
16. Why is Merle Liivand called “eco-mermaid”?
① She is a marathon runner. ②She swims with a single fin like a mermaid.
③She cares about plastic pollution in the sea. ④She won open water swimming contests.
A. ①② B. ②③ C. ③④ D. ①④

A. Picking up rubbish in the sea. B. Swimming like a sea animal.
C. Breaking her own world record. D. Taking part in swimming competitions.

A. It helped her swim much faster. B. It made her swim more slowly.
C. It could cause fish to follow her. D. It showed an important message.
19. How was Liivand’s swimming according to Paragraph 6?
A. Important. B. Interesting. C. Difficult. D. Exciting.
20 What’s the best title (标题) for the text?

【答案】例文
Last winter, I volunteered at a community center. My task was to help organize donated clothes for homeless people. First, we sorted clothes by size and season. Then, we packed them into boxes with care. When distributing the clothes, I noticed a little girl hugging a warm sweater tightly. Her big smile made me realize how small actions can bring real happiness.
This experience taught me that small actions can make a big difference. Helping others not only brings joy to the community but also fills me with pride. I realized volunteering connects people and creates a warmer world.
