Who is your favorite poet? For many young people, the answer is Shel Silverstein. Shel’s first book Uncle Shelby’s Story of Lafcadio the Lion Who Shot Back was published in the 1960s, and since then his children’s books have sold more than 30 million copies! Young people recognize that Shel really understood his readers.
Shel Silverstein was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1930. He began writing poems when he was young. Although he was best known for writing children’s stories, Shel was creative in many ways. He began his career in the arts as a cartoonist in his twenties. He also was a talented singer, songwriter, composer, and illustrator. In fact, Shel illustrated all of his children’s books himself. This is one reason the pictures seem to match the poem so perfectly.
Where the Sidewalk Ends, first published in 1974, is one of the most beloved children’s books of all time. But what makes Shel’s poetry so timeless and popular? His poems are often funny, and young people love Shel’s type of humor.
In one poem, he told the story of a girl who refused to take out the garbage. It piled up higher and higher until it almost took over the town. Many kids have experienced the feeling of not wanting to do a chore. They love the feeling of being out of control in the book because they know that it would never happen that way in real life.
Shel also liked to play with language in his poetry. He often used skills like Alliteration in his work. Alliteration is the use of words that begin with the same sounds. In the poem about the girl who refused to take out the garbage, the character’s name is Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout. This type of Alliteration can make poetry fun to read aloud.
In1999, Shel Silverstein died in his home in Key West Florida. Children and adults will miss his special humor and incredible imagination. As the media’s words go, “Where there is a library, there are Shel’s books.”
4. When did Shel Silverstein become a cartoonist?
A. In the 1940s. B. In the 1950s. C. In the 1960s. D. In the 1970s.
5. What kind of person is Shel Silverstein?
A. Fun and talkative. B. Kind and creative.
C Talented and humorous. D. Clever and friendly.
6. What does the underlined word “illustrate” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Draw pictures. B. Read stories. C. Write songs. D. Tell jokes.
7. Which of the following sentence is an example of Alliteration?
A. Tell me I’m clever. Tell me I’m kind.
B. Mandy’s mom made mouthwatering mooncakes.
C. I made myself a snowball as perfect as could be.
D. The garbage reached across the state from New York to the Golden Gate.
The Drama Festival will run in and outside China from June 20 to July 7. Sixty-five works will be put on both in theaters and online. “The festival is all about imagination connecting drama with the latest technology,” says Liu Chang, the manager of the festival, performances and so on. Artists like Liu aren’t sure if the new technology can take drama to the future.
A Chinese play directed by Meng Jinghui, inspired (赋予灵感) by the two-part drama Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Meng introduces the story to 400 real audiences sitting in the Fengchao Theater in Beijing. The second half of the play will have more audiences, who use their cellphones.
Zhang Zhouxiang is a director full of imagination. His work, inspired by Hieronymus Bosch’s painting The Garden of Earthly Delights, will be shown from June 30 to July 2. Supported by AI, similar to the feeling in the real world, as the painting describes.
“The stage design is done by AI, which is like an assistant realizing the ideas of me and my team.” says Liu, “Now I try to use the latest technology, to write the script (剧本), and I am still working on it because the language model is hard to understand.”
Now technology is playing a more and more important role. Many artists want to use it to improve drama. They are very interested in the relationship between people and the latest technology, especially when connected in drama—a scene to dream.
8. Which of the following is true according to this passage?
A. Liu doubts whether technology can greatly improve drama.
B. Meng’s two-part drama Faust will be on at the opening.
C. Audiences can explore the scene of Liu’s work by AI.
D. Liu has managed to write the script by ChatGPT.
9. What does the underlined word “it” mean in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. ChatGPT
B. technology
C. design
D. script
10. What is the structure of this passage? (1=Paragraph 1, 2﹣Paragraph 2 ...)
A. B. C. D.
11. What is the best title of this passage?
A. A great drama festival
B. Wild Human imagination
C. Dramas of the future
D. AI-assisted technology in dramas
We go to bed when we’re tired. Sometimes, however, we wake up feeling tired even though we’ve slept for ten hours. Should we get more sleep then?
We go through life thinking we’ve rested as long as we’ve gotten enough sleep. But in fact rest is much more than our nightly hours of shut-eye. Many of us are missing out on the other types of rest that we badly need.
The first type of rest we need is physical rest. It can be passive or active. Passive physical rest refers to sleeping, while active physical rest includes activities like yoga (瑜伽). These activities help your body relax.
Have you ever heard your parents or others complain that they have a hard time focusing on their work? Have they ever said that when they lie down at night to sleep they have trouble “turning off” their brains as conversations from the day fill their thoughts? These people need mental rest. You can advise them to take a short break every two hours during their workday. These breaks remind them to slow down a bit.
The third type of rest is sensory rest. Bright lights, computer screens and background noise can make our senses feel tired. But this problem is easy to solve. You can close your eyes for a minute in the middle of the day or put away your electronics for a while.
Then comes creative rest. Allowing yourself to take in the beauty of nature—even if it’s just at a local park—provides you with this type of rest. You can also place your favorite artwork around your desk. Enjoying art is another great way to get creative rest.
The last two types of rest we need are social rest and emotional rest. Spend some time with people who can provide help. Try to open up to them and share the hard things that have been troubling you lately.
Now you know we need much more than a good night’s sleep to feel well-rested. It’s time for us to focus on getting the right type of rest we need.
12. How many types of rest are mentioned in this passage?
A. Four. B. Five. C. Six. D. Seven.
13. What can we do if computer screens and background noise make our senses feel tired?
A. Close our eyes for a minute or put away our electronics.
B. Take a short break every two hours during our workday.
C. Get more than ten hours’ sleep and do activities like yoga.
D. Open up to our friends and share the hard things we have met.
14. How do we get a creative break?
①by taking a short break ②by enjoying our favorite artwork ③by closing our eyes
④by admiring natural beauty ⑤by talking with people who can help us
A. ①⑤ B. ②③ C. ④⑤ D. ②④
15. What’s the writer’s purpose according to the passage?
A. To realize the importance of the right type of rest.
B. To explain the reason why all of us can hardly sleep well.
C. To tell we need not only sleep but also the right type of rest.
D. To show we’ll feel energetic if we sleep more than 10 hours a day.
第二节任务型阅读(满分10分)
The warm climate, water plants and wetland in nature reserves (自然保护区) provide an ideal living environment for wild animals. This makes them feel like returning to nature. In reserves, people watch and study animals’ living habits, activities and so on.
Now, the AI system (系统) in reserves plays an important role in studying wildlife. People just sit in front of a big screen and then they can watch every move the animals make. The AI system helps in many ways. First, feet and beaks. Second, it can keep recording animal behaviors for researchers day and night, such recording could not last. Moreover, it can check unusual behaviors among the animals. If an animal walks or flies in an unusual way or lies on the ground for a while, the system can help to warn the unauthorized (未经许可的) people not to enter the protected areas. The AI system is also served as an educational platform (平台), visitors can watch and get more knowledge about the wild animals living in the reserve.
However, there are problems. On one hand, the AI system itself sometimes mistakes an animal for another. On the other hand, people still need to go around to get a whole understanding of wildlife because the AI system has not been put in at every corner of the reserves. To further develop the AI system, the reserves are now working with more high-tech companies.

We go to bed when we’re tired. Sometimes, however, we wake up feeling tired even though we’ve slept for ten hours. Should we get more sleep then?
We go through life thinking we’ve rested as long as we’ve gotten enough sleep. But in fact, rest is much more than our nightly hours of shut-eye.
Have they ever said that when they lie down at night to sleep, they have trouble “turning off” their brains as conversations from the day fill their thoughts?
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. C

【15题详解】
