Some books to look forward to in 2024
The first few months of 2024 are piled with exciting and interesting reads . If you’re looking to get a jump ahead on the holds from your local library, here are just a few books we ‘re looking forward to.
James by Percival Everett
Celebrated author Percival Everett gives us Huckleberry Finn from Jim’s point of view. It’s far from a straight re-telling, though. Instead, Everett (but off his 2001 book Erasure being adapted into the film American Fiction) uses the beats of the original story to give us a send up of language and race.(Pub. March.19)
The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo
This standalone fantasy was inspired by the best-selling author’s own family history. It takes place during the Spanish Golden Age and follows a servant, hiding the fact that she can perform miracles. (Pub. Apr.9)
Private Equity by Carrie Sun
A memoir (回忆录) about the daughter of Chinese immigrants who ended up becoming an assistant to a billionaire hedge fund founder. It’s an examination of the hustle and tiring lifestyle that spreads American work culture, and the costs of extreme wealth. (Pub. Feh.13)
Legacy by Uché Blackstock
Uché Blackstock has had a long career in medicine as a doctor and as a professor of emergency medicine. Her account follows her growing up wanting nothing more than to be doctor, and discovering all parts of the systemic issues that lend to poorer health outcomes for Black Americans. (Pub, Jan.23)
1. What do we know about Percival Everett?
A. He is famous for film making. B. He wrote James under the name of Jim.
C. His works are focused on historical fiction. D. His literary works have significant influence.
2. What is the common characteristic of the last two books?
A. They concern Black Americans. B. They are about real account of life.
C. They reflect American work culture. D. They focus on unfair phenomenon in society.

根据“James by Percival Everett”部分中的“Celebrated author Percival Everett gives us Huckleberry Finn from Jim’s point of view. It’s far from a straight re -telling, though. Instead, Everett (but off his 2001 book Erasure being adapted into the film American Fiction) uses the beats of the original story to give us a send up of language and race. (著名作家Percival Everett从Jim的角度给我们带来了《哈克贝利·费恩历险记》。然而,这远不是一个直接的重新讲述。相反,Everett (2001年出版的《擦除》被改编成电影《美国小说》)利用原著故事的节奏给我们一种语言和种族的警示。)”可推测,Everett的作品具有显著的影响力。故选D。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据“Private Equity by Carrie Sun”部分中的“A memoir (回忆录) about the daughter of Chinese immigrants who ended up becoming an assistant to a billionaire hedge fund founder.(一本回忆录,讲述了中国移民的女儿最终成为亿万富翁对冲基金创始人的助理。)”以及“Legacy by Uché Blackstock”部分中的“Her account follows her growing up wanting nothing more than to be doctor, and discovering all parts of the systemic issues that lend to poorer health outcomes for Black Americans.(她的故事讲述了她的成长过程,她只想成为一名医生,并发现了导致美国黑人健康状况不佳的系统性问题的各个方面。)”可知,最后两本书《Private Equity by Carrie Sun》和《Legacy by Uché Blackstock》都是关于作者的真实生活经历的。
根据“The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo”部分中的“This standalone fantasy was inspired by the best-selling author’s own family history. It takes place during the Spanish Golden Age and follows a servant, hiding the fact that she can perform miracles.(这本独立的奇幻小说的灵感来自于这位畅销书作者自己的家族史。故事发生在西班牙黄金时代,主人公跟随一个仆人,隐藏了她能创造奇迹的事实。)”可知,《The Familiar》这本书是基于作者自己家族背景创作的。故选B。
B
When my son, Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money for over three months to buy Christmas presents. The third Saturday in December Mark said he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.
I drove him to a nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a basket and went in while I waited and watched in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his presents. Finally he came to the checkout counter and reached into his pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood there holding his basket, tears falling down his face.
Then a surprising thing happened. A woman came up to Mark and took him in her arms. “You would help me a lot if you let me pay for you,” said the woman. “It would be the most wonderful gift you could give me. I only ask that one day you will pass it on. When you grow up, I would like you to find someone you can help. When you help others, 1 know you will feel as good about it as I do now.”
Mark took the money, dried his tears and ran back to the checkout counter as fast as he could. That year we all enjoyed our gifts almost as much as Mark enjoyed giving them to us.
I would like to say “thank you” to that very kind woman, and tell her that four years later, Mark went house to house collecting blankets and clothes for the homeless people in the fire. And I want to promise her that Mark will never forget to keep passing it on.
4. When did the story probably happen?
A. On Christmas Day. B. Before Christmas Day,
C On New Year’s Day. D. After New Year’s Day.
5. What happened to Mark in the supermarket?
A. His gifts were stolen. B. He broke his basket.
C. He lost his money. D. He lost his way.
6. Why did the writer want to say “thank you” to the woman?
A. Because she bought Mark a nice present.
B. Because she always paid money for others.
C. Because she collected clothes for the homeless.
D. Because she taught Mark to help people in need.
7. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. A big supermarket B. A kind woman
C. A happy family D. A wonderful gift
B 5. C 6. D 7. D
根据文章第一段“The third Saturday in December Mark said he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.(12月的第三个星期六,马克说他已经列好了清单,口袋里有20美元。)”
根据文章第二段“Finally he came to the checkout counter and reached into his pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood there holding his basket, tears falling down his face.(最后,他来到收银台,把手伸进口袋拿钱。它不在那儿!他的口袋有个洞,但没有钱。马克站在那里,手里拿着篮子,泪流满面。)”可知在超市里马克发现自己的钱丢了。故选C项。
【6题详解】

And I want to promise her that Mark will never forget to keep passing it on.(我想对这位非常善良的女士说声“谢谢”,并告诉她四年后,马克挨家挨户地为火灾中无家可归的人收集毯子和衣服。
根据文章第三段“A woman came up to Mark and took him in her arms. “You would help me a lot if you let me pay for you,” said the woman. “It would be the most wonderful gift you could give me. I only ask that one day you will pass it on. When you grow up, I would like you to find someone you can help. When you help others, 1 know you will feel as good about it as I do now.”(一个女人走到马克跟前,把他抱在怀里。
C
I was born in a poor community on the north side of Boston, US, raised by a single mother who didn’t finish 3rd grade, lived each day on food stamps and attended what the media called “the most dysfunctional public school district”. Not many people expected much of me, so I had to expect something of myself.
On my 13th birthday, I bought a poster of Harvard to hang in my room. Being at Harvard became what I dreamt about. Even when my electricity was cut off and I woke up at 5:30 am to pitch blackness, I knew that my poster of Harvard was still hanging only two feet away from me.
Reminding myself of my goal each day made it easy to say no to the same choices I saw my peers making, because those paths wouldn’t have had me closer to my goal. Even poverty could not take away my power to decide what I choose to do with my day. The poster gave me the courage to cold email about 50 Harvard students so I could ask for feedback on my application essays; it gave me the energy to study just one more hour on my SATs when my friends were asleep; and it gave me the determination to submit just one more scholarship application when 180 others had already turned me down.
Every day I could feel myself getting closer and closer to my goal as my writing got better, my SAT score increased, and my scholarship checks started coming in. Finally, an email arrived from Harvard. The first word was “Congratulations!” A month later, Harvard flew me up to visit the campus where for the first time I stepped onto my dreaming land.
Who you are today is the result of the decisions you made yesterday, and who you will be tomorrow will be the result of the choices you make today. Who do you want to be tomorrow?

What images does science conjure up (使浮现) in your mind? You may well be visualizing a laboratory equations (方程式) written on a blackboard. Figures are surrounded by glassware filled with colored liquids. Maybe someone is studying the world under a microscope.
But what this scene fails to show is that science isn’t about labs, equipment or highly trained professionals. It is not even a body of knowledge locked away in great minds or kept within textbooks and journals. Instead, it is about having a curious, creative, critical and evidence-based mindset, which means anyone who uses the scientific method can and should consider themselves a scientist. Indeed, many a discovery has been made by amateur scientists.
Amateur scientists are helping to shape science. In January 2023, a new study confirmed the theory of amateur archaeologist Ben Bacon who concluded 20,000-year-old cave markings were a lunar calendar. He spent hours decoding (破译) the mysterious writing system, which may predate other similar record-keeping systems by at least 10,000 years.
Astronomy has a long history of encouraging input from nonprofessional scientists. Brother and sister team William and Caroline Herschel are among the most well-known. Back down on the ground there is still plenty for the amateur to explore. Mary Anning is one of the most notable amateur Earth scientists.
In the early 19th century, Mary Anning unearthed fossils on the beaches of Lyme Regis, Dorset. Despite her limited education, she read as much scientific literature as she could get her hands on and produced detailed technical drawings to record her finds. Unfortunately, the influential Geological Society of London did not allow female members. So Anning was forced to sell her finds to “gentlemen” geologists who passed her work off as their own.
12. Why does the author mention the images in paragraph 1 ?
A. To explain what science is.
B. To show people’s general opinion of science.
C. To introduce how scientists experiment.
D. To stress the importance of having scientific equipment.
13. What does the author think of scientific discovery?
A. It relies on labs and equipment. B. It is mainly done by professionals.
C. It requires an innovative mindset. D. It is irrelevant to amateur scientists.
14. How is paragraph 3 mainly developed?
A. By making a comparison. B. By following time order.
C. By giving an example. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
15. Why did Anning sell her finds to other geologists?
A. She sold them for money. B. She considered them unimportant.
C. She wanted to pursue higher education. D. She experienced inequality in the scientific field.
B 13. C 14. C 15. D

In January 2023, a new study confirmed the theory of amateur archaeologist Ben Bacon who concluded 20,000-year-old cave markings were a lunar calendar. He spent hours decoding the mysterious writing system, which may predate other similar record-keeping systems by at least 10,000 years.(业余科学家正在帮助塑造科学。
根据最后一段“Unfortunately, the influential Geological Society of London did not allow female members. So Anning was forced to sell her finds to “gentlemen” geologists who passed her work off as their own.(不幸的是,有影响力的伦敦地质学会不允许女性成为会员。因此,安宁被迫把她的发现卖给“绅士”地质学家,他们把她的发现当作自己的)”可知,安宁把她的发现卖给其他地质学家是因为她经历了科学领域的不平等。故选D。

A She sold them for money. B. She considered them unimportant.
C. She wanted to pursue higher education. D. She experienced inequality in the scientific field.
