Volunteer with Philly Food Rescue (PFR)
In one hour, you can do something to reduce food waste and resource local community. Download the Philly Food Rescue app to get started.
What’s the service opportunity?
PFR is the sustainability, food recovery, and donations arm of Share Food Program. You’ll use your own car (or bike) to rescue leftover food from a grocery store, restaurant, or farmers’ market, delivering it to the matched nonprofit takers. Those include senior centers, shelters, schools, and more. You can claim a one-time or weekly food rescue.
What difference does food rescue make?
PFR works to increase access to fresh food for our neighbors. Our team recovers half a million pounds of food every month thanks to volunteers like you. We resource more than 283 partners across Philadelphia, its suburbs, and South Jersey, impacting food security and sustainability every day of the week.
What’s required?
● If driving, a driver’s license and insurance are needed. For smaller food rescues, a bike may do.
● Food rescue volunteers should be able to lift at least 30 pounds.
● Clear the trunk and back seat to make space for boxes or bags of food.
● Complete the food rescue within its scheduled window.
Additional information:
● PFR matches donations within five miles to keep food local, honor volunteers’ time, and ensure food safety.
● You’re welcome to bring a friend or child as a passenger to help with loading, unloading, and delivery.
● Questions? Ask Britt at bkorn@sharefoodprogram.org or (215)301-3734.

“My enthusiasm for this job is totally gone,” an Amazon worker recently wrote on Blind, an online forum where employees complain about their employers. All this happened after Andy Jassy, the tech giant’s boss, sent a letter that ordered staff back to the office five days a week instead of the previous three days.
Amazon isn’t alone to limit remote work. A recent global survey by KPMG, another professional-services firm, found that four-fifths of bosses expect a return to the office five days a week within three years. The change in some tech, financial and professional-services firms is more dramatic.
Ordering a return to the office tends to anger staff. A survey by Gartner, a research firm, found that a fifth of employees would leave their jobs if they were forced back to the office. For some companies, that may be the point. Getting some of them to leave voluntarily would reduce costs, though it also risks losing talented employees.
Many bosses believe having employees in the office leads to better performance. Plenty of studies suggest that remote employees are less productive. There’s less evidence, though, that letting staff work from home a couple of days a week has a negative effect on performance. A random trial at an online travel agency by Nick Bloom of Stanford University found no difference in performance between hybrid workers and those who worked entirely from the office.
Bosses may argue that complex tasks, such as designing a user interface, can require a lot of cooperation that may be difficult to perform virtually. Junior employees may also receive less coaching if they interact with others from home. Some bosses argue that this will harm their company’s culture, as new employees don’t absorb it and old ones forget it. Mr. Jassy wrote that Amazon’s culture has been one of the most critical parts of its success, and that it’s easier for our teammates to learn, practise, and strengthen it when working together in the office.
For now, investors seem to be withholding judgment. If Mr. Jassy is right, that may soon change.
24. What did the Amazon worker complain about on Blind?
A. The increase in remote work hours. B. The shift in the company’s leadership.
C. The requirement of the five-day office work. D. The lack of opportunities for advancement.
25. What can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A. Office work is always more productive. B. Hybrid work is the best for all companies.
C. Remote work leads to a lack of enthusiasm. D. The effect of work mode on productivity isn’t clear-cut.
26 What’s Jassy’s attitude towards ordering employees to return to the office?
A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Reserved. D. Indifferent.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Limit Work Days to Promote Productivity
B. Know Corporate Culture via Remote Work
C. Obey the Order and Stop Making Complaints
D. Get Prepared to Go back to the Office to Work

Districts across the US are trying to address the high number of students needing mental health support. What if they could enlist students as part of the solution, too? A rural Ohio high school has done just that.
At Claymont High School in Uhrichsville, Ohio, a group of about 21 high schoolers are trained in mental health first aid. They’ve taken courses to learn how to help their peers who are going through a difficult time.
The students, who are in grades 10 through 12, are part of a larger program called Peers Uplifting Peers, or PUP, which helps to break down the stigma around mental health and wellness and normalize having conversations about both and seeking professional help when necessary.
A key part of their training is to help their friends get in touch with professionals and established resources. “Students are helping out by picking up on early warning signs. They are noticing that maybe someone is having a hard day or is just sitting by themselves,” said Kelsi Barnhart, the school’s assistant principal. “They try to be good friends, and they speak up. It’s not that they are stepping in and providing counseling.”
Despite a national conversation around mental health the context may be different in rural areas like Uhrichsville where people feel ashamed of discussing mental health. “It’s hard to talk about mental health out loud,” said Bridget Britton, a licensed social worker. Getting to a therapist can also be a challenge since most rural areas do not have the bus and rail systems found in urban communities. There are also financial barriers. “Many rural residents work on farms, which often don’t provide workers with health insurance.” she said.
28. What do we know about the group of students from Claymont High School?
A. They are trained to be specialists.
B. They had mental health issues before.
C. They are carefully selected by PUP.
D. They provide support to their classmates.
29. Which is closest in meaning to “stigma” in paragraph 3?
A. Ignorance. B. Risk. C. Secret. D. Shame.
30. What does Barnhart think the trained students are?
A. The first to notice a problem.
B. A bridge between students and the school.
C. Life coaches.
D. Active counselors.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Limitations of the program.
B. Challenges facing rural areas.
C. Misconceptions of mental health.
D. Problems in the US healthcare system.

As social creatures, humans can predict one another’s emotions and mental states from a range of sources: watching their actions, listening to their conversations, learning from their past behaviors, and so on. Cognitive (认知的) researchers call this the “Theory of Mind,” or ToM.
Although it excels in many areas, artificial intelligence doesn’t match humans in this regard — at least not yet, according to a research team including Tianmin Shu, an assistant professor of computer science at the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering.
To explore whether AI models can understand humans by using information from multiple sources, Shu and his team created the first standardized dataset that reflects the true complexities of the reasoning tasks encountered by real-world AI systems. The team’s test set includes 134 videos and text descriptions of people looking for common objects in a household environment.
The researchers tested both humans and state-of-the-art (最先进的) large language and multimodal models on their ability to predict which objects the people in the videos wanted to find and where they believed they’d find them.
The team found that humans became better at understanding others’ intentions when they tapped into varied sources of information. In contrast, even the most advanced AI models — such as OpenAI’s GPT-4V — struggled with such tasks, often confusing what was actually happening with what a person believed was happening and having difficulty tracking changes in people’s thoughts over time.
Based on these findings, Shu’s team created their own model. Their approach first translates the video and text inputs into a type of signal it can understand, capturing the physical scene and the actions of the person within it. Then, instead of directly mapping these to the person’s beliefs and goals, the model uses a combination of Bayesian inverse planning — a cognitive method originally designed for visual data and smaller language models fine-tuned on human activity data to predict the most likely possible actions.
32. What is ToM described in the passage?
A. Methods for AI to predict human actions.
B. A standardized dataset used to test AI models.
C. A cognitive approach to understanding visual data.
D. Humans’ ability to infer moods and psychological conditions.
33. Which can replace the underlined part in paragraph 5?
A. Take advantage of. B. Looked for. C. Break away from. D. Left alone.
34. What may be talked about following the last paragraph?
A. The outcome of the model of Shu’s team.
B. The combination of intentions and activities.
C. The method of translating videos and texts.
D. The application of Bayesian inverse planning.
35. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Theory of Mind in Artificial Intelligence
B. Human-AI Similarities in Theory of Mind
C. AI’s Drawback in Grasping Human Intentions
D. Development of Shu’s Team’s New Model

He was the prettiest homeless dog we had ever seen at the shelter. We immediately fell in love with him and decided to give him a permanent home. Our ten-year-old daughter. Margie, named him Onyx because of his thick, shiny black hair. When we adopted him, Onyx was only ten weeks old and we had no idea that this amazing little baby dog would end up being our hero.
As he grew older, Onyx became more and more involved in our family activities. He particularly loved swimming with us on hot summer days. He would float in the river in his own rubber tube(橡皮圈). Sometimes, he would stand on the top of the tube with a big smile and show off his perfect balance. Otherwise, he would rest his front legs over the edge of the rubber tube and keep his eyes shut as he floated until he had enough of the warm sun on his thick, black coat.
One day, Margie announced she was going to swim in the pond in front of our house. But it happened that no one in the family was free to go swimming with her that day. The unwritten rule in my family, regardless of swimming ability, was to have a companion in the water. I was not a good swimmer, so I said to Margie, “Take Onyx with you.”
Having heard his name, Onyx jumped to his feet and was ready for action. Margie signaled him to follow and they rushed to the water together. However, I still felt uneasy at the moment.
I went to the doorway and watched them reach the pond. They rested on the shore for a few minutes before diving into the water and started swimming side by side. Suddenly I heard Margie calling out, “Help! My leg hurts!”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

M: So do people ask you to organize their weddings to save money?
W: Well, I reduce some of the costs, but they have to pay my fee so it works out about the same. In most cases, they’re simply too busy to do it without assistance.
M: Tell me, what made you want to become a wedding planner?
W: In my case, it was after I’d been doing some voluntary work for a non-profit organization. Others come into wedding planning through different routes, such as restaurant management or providing meals for open-air events.
M: So how could someone find work in this type of business?
W: Well, some companies offer courses, or you can provide written references from past clients. But in my case, people were impressed by pictures of beautiful weddings planned and run by me.
M: Thank you, Amelia.

26. What’s Jassy’s attitude towards ordering employees to return to the office?
A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Reserved. D. Indifferent.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Limit Work Days to Promote Productivity
B. Know Corporate Culture via Remote Work
C. Obey the Order and Stop Making Complaints
D. Get Prepared to Go back to the Office to Work
C 25. D 26. A 27. D
根据文章第一段““My enthusiasm for this job is totally gone,” an Amazon worker recently wrote on Blind, an online forum where employees complain about their employers. All this happened after Andy Jassy, the tech giant’s boss, sent a letter that ordered staff back to the office five days a week instead of the previous three days. (“我对这份工作的热情完全没了。”一位亚马逊员工最近在 Blind(一个供员工吐槽雇主的在线论坛)上写道。这一切都源于科技巨头亚马逊的老板Andy Jassy发出的一封信,信中要求员工每周需返回办公室工作五天,而不是此前的三天。)”可知,员工抱怨的是每周需五天回办公室工作的要求。故选C。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“Many bosses believe having employees in the office leads to better performance.
Jassy wrote that Amazon’s culture has been one of the most critical parts of its success, and that it’s easier for our teammates to learn, practise, and strengthen it when working together in the office. ( Jassy先生写道,亚马逊的文化一直是其成功的关键因素之一,当团队成员在办公室一起工作时,他们更容易学习、践行并强化这种文化。)”可知,Jassy认为员工在办公室一起工作更容易学习、践行并强化公司文化,而公司文化是成功关键因素之一,所以他对要求员工回办公室工作是支持的态度。故选A。
根据文章第二段“Amazon isn’t alone to limit remote work. A recent global survey by KPMG, another professional-services firm, found that four-fifths of bosses expect a return to the office five days a week within three years. The change in some tech, financial and professional-services firms is more dramatic. (亚马逊并非唯一限制远程办公的公司。另一家专业服务公司毕马威(KPMG)近期开展的一项全球调查发现,五分之四的老板希望员工在三年内恢复每周五天的办公室工作模式。一些科技、金融和专业服务公司的这一转变更为显著。)”,最后一段“For now, investors seem to be withholding judgment. If Mr. Jassy is right, that may soon change. (目前,投资者似乎还在观望。如果Jassy先生是正确的,这种情况可能很快就会改变。)”再结合全文内容可知,文章开头以亚马逊要求员工增加办公室工作天数引发员工抱怨为例,接着阐述了其他公司类似限制远程工作的情况,以及老板要求员工回办公室工作的原因等,整体围绕员工可能要准备回到办公室工作展开。选项D“Get Prepared to Go back to the Office to Work”最能概括文章主旨。故选D。
C
Despite a national conversation around mental health, the context may be different in rural areas like Uhrichsville where people feel ashamed of discussing mental health.
D 29. D 30. A 31. B
根据第二段 “At Claymont High School in Uhrichsville, Ohio, a group of about 21 high schoolers are trained in mental health first aid. They’ve taken courses to learn how to help their peers who are going through a difficult time.(在俄亥俄州乌里奇斯维尔的克莱蒙特高中,大约 21 名高中生接受了心理健康急救培训。他们参加了课程,学习如何帮助正在经历困难时期的同龄人)” 可知,这群来自克莱蒙特高中的学生为他们的同学提供支持。故选D。
【29题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第三段 “The students, who are in grades 10 through 12, are part of a larger program called Peers Uplifting Peers, or PUP, which helps to break down the stigma around mental health and wellness and normalize having conversations about both and seeking professional help when necessary.(这些 10 到 12 年级的学生是一个名为 “同伴激励同伴”(简称 PUP)的更大项目的一部分,该项目有助于打破围绕心理健康和保健的stigma,使关于这两方面的对话正常化,并在必要时寻求专业帮助)” 以及第五段 “Despite a national conversation around mental health, the context may be different in rural areas like Uhrichsville where people feel ashamed of discussing mental health.(尽管全国都在讨论心理健康问题,但在像乌里奇斯维尔这样的农村地区情况可能有所不同,那里的人们羞于谈论心理健康问题)” 可知,该项目有助于打破围绕心理健康和保健的耻辱感。
根据第四段 “Students are helping out by picking up on early warning signs. They are noticing that maybe someone is having a hard day or is just sitting by themselves,” said Kelsi Barnhart, the school’s assistant principal.(该校副校长凯尔西・巴恩哈特说:“学生们通过发现早期预警信号来提供帮助。他们注意到也许有人度过了艰难的一天,或者只是独自坐着。”)” 可推知,巴恩哈特认为这些接受过培训的学生是最先注意到问题的人。故选A。
根据最后一段“Despite a national conversation around mental health, the context may be different in rural areas like Uhrichsville where people feel ashamed of discussing mental health.
D
D 33. A 34. A 35. C
根据第一段“As social creatures, humans can predict one another’s emotions and mental states from a range of sources: watching their actions, listening to their conversations, learning from their past behaviors, and so on. Cognitive (认知的) researchers call this the “Theory of Mind,” or ToM. (作为社会性生物,人类能够通过多种途径预测他人的情绪和心理状态:观察他们的行为、倾听对话、了解过往行为等。认知研究者将这种能力称为“心智理论”,简称ToM)”可知,ToM被描述为人类推断他人情绪和心理状态的能力。故选D。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段“The team found that humans became better at understanding others’ intentions when they tapped into varied sources of information. In contrast, even the most advanced AI models — such as OpenAI’s GPT-4V — struggled with such tasks, often confusing what was actually happening with what a person believed was happening and having difficulty tracking changes in people’s thoughts over time. 故选A。

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Seeing my daughter struggling in the water, I dashed to the pond.

After they were sale on the shore, I hugged Onyx and my daughter tightly.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
My heart skipped a beat as panic surged through me. But I was not a good swimmer, so I dared not go into the water to save Margie, just stoping on the bank anxiously. Just then, Onyx, sensing Margie's danger, immediately swam closer to her, barking and nudging her leg gently with her nose. With remarkable agility, Onyx supported Margie, allowing her to rest her weight on the dog while she massaged her cramped leg.
Onyx's quick thinking and unwavering loyalty had saved Margie from a potentially dangerous situation. With tears of gratitude in my eyes, I hugged Onyx tightly again and again, realizing that she truly was our hero in every sense of the word. Onyx raised his head and wagged his tail, apparently feeling honored for her bravery. From then on, Every time Magi went swimming, she took Onyx with her. We were certainly relieved to have Onyx by her side.
