Traditional Air Conditioners (AC) are outdated. They cost a lot to install and even more to run. They are huge, noisy, and dangerous to clean. You can’t move them around the house with you or take them outside! Thousands of people are now using a much cheaper alternative to cool themselves in the heat and clean their personal air. With over a million units sold worldwide, this device is becoming one of the most successful gadgets of 2019. EVERYONE wants this awesome looking box for summer! What Are We Talking About? Meet the new AirFreez, an innovative alliterative to AC that cools you just the same! It’s a perfect solution for those very hot days and nights! The AirFreez was designed by two Swiss engineers who were fed up suffering the hot summers. They realized that AC units are super inefficient and cost a lot of money to use. The engineers also discovered that none of the traditional AC units were made to travel with. So, they designed this light-weight, portable Air Cooling box. It uses a very small amount of electricity and all without sacrificing any of the main benefits of a top AC model! It’s tiny, easy to use and it can cool you in seconds! What Is So Special About This Little Box? The main benefits of AirFreez are its portability and price. It is no larger than a lunchbox. Besides, it can be powered by a pocket solar panel or battery pack and you probably have the world’s most portable AC unit. And There Is One More Thing. The price is just amazing. Most AC units cost at least $300+ AND you have to pay for installation PLUS cover the expensive electricity bills each month. The AirFreez costs less than $100 (Actually $53 for each if you buy more than one here). No messy installation (安装), no expensive electricity bills. For a Cooling unit of this quality, this must be the single best price-quality AC unit there is! How Can You Get An AirFreez? Now that you are aware of this amazing new invention, here is how to get one — order it from the Official Website for BEST PRICE. 21 Which of the following words can best describe AirFreez? A. Smart but fragile (易碎的). B. Costly but multi-functional. C. Fordable and durable (耐用的). D. Handy and energy-saving. 22. What can we learn about AirFreez? A. It costs less than $53. B. It requires no complex installation. C. It doesn’t consume electricity. D. It is a little larger than a lunch box. 23. What is the purpose of this passage? A. To advertise Airfreez. B. To explain the functions of AirFreez. C. To introduce the nventors of AirFreez. D. To compare AirFreez with traditional AC. B “Are you all right?” the student asked as she passed me in the hallway. I was in the final stretch of last work before writing my essay. The student, who was 4 years behind me in the same Ph.D. program, went on to say, “I see people from your group working so much, putting in extra hours, even at night.” It set me thinking a lot. As a first-year Ph.D. student, I was lucky to have kind and understanding advisers. But I felt overwhelming pressure to become a perfect student. I kept finding a million reasons why I was coming into graduate school at a disadvantage compared with my peers. As a student from Colombia, I had been educated at institutions my professors and colleagues had never heard of, I spoke with an accent that was hard to understand, and I was older than most of the people in my cohort. I noticed that most of the people around me seemed to be working all the time. I began to spend many weekday nights and weekends in the lab. But my strategy didn’t work. I crashed from burnout. The tiredness took a toll on my productivity and motivation. During one of many mindless Sundays in the office, I realized I’d fallen into the trap of assuming my colleagues’ work habits were the standard for belonging and being worthy of respect — and it wasn’t sustainable. From then on, I stopped counting the number of work hours I was putting in, leaving space every day for exercising and doing activities that I enjoyed. Eventually, I realized nobody was keeping track of the amount of time I spent in the lab anyway and it wasn’t something I needed to worry about. I noticed that having more time for myself made me more rested and motivated when I went back to work. I continued quietly along this path for years, until that conversation in the hallway. So, when I ran into her again, weeks later, I told her that even though I was feeling a lot of pressure in the final year of my Ph.D., I was putting my mental and physical health first and wasn’t working overtime. I also began to talk with other students about how quality sleep, physical activity, healthy eating, and reasonable work hours were a daily part of my routine. 24. What can we learn about the student? A. He spent much time in lab work. B. He had finished the Ph.D. program. C. He was concerned about the author. D. He was putting in extra hours at night. 25. How does the author feel about his work at first? A. Anxious. B. Ambitious. C. Dissatisfied. D. Enthusiastic. 26 Which can replace the underlined phrase “took a toll on” in Para. 3? A. Added fuel to. B. Had a negative impact on. C. Cast new light on. D. Depended too much on. 27. What does the author intend to tell us? A. A healthy work-life balance counts. B. A fall into the pit, a gain in your wit. C. Fitting in doesn’t mean working overtime. D. Nothing is difficult to the man who will try. C Art & Technology Think “art”. What comes to your mind? Is it Greek or Roman sculptures in the Louvre, or Chinese paintings in the Palace Museum? Or maybe, just maybe, it’s a dancing pattern of lights? The artworks by American artist Janet Echelman look like colorful floating clouds when they are lit up at night. Visitors to one of her artworks in Vancouver could not only enjoy looking at it, they could also interact with it- literally. They did this by using their phones to change its colors and patterns. Exhibits such as these are certainly new and exciting, but are they really art? Whatever your opinion, people have been expressing their thoughts and ideas through art for thousands of years. To do this, they have used a variety of tools and technologies. Yet Michelangelo and others have been labelled as “artists” rather than “technicians”. This means that art and technology have always been seen as two very separate things. Today, however, technological advances have led to a combination of art and technology. As a result, the art world is changing greatly. Now art is more accessible to us than ever before. Take for example one of China’s most famous paintings from the Song Dynasty, Along the River During the Qingning Festival. As this artwork is rarely on display, people have sometimes queued up to six hours for a chance to see it. Once in front of the painting, they only have limited time to spend taking in its five meters of scenes along the Bian River in Bianjing. Thanks to technology however, millions more people have been able to experience a digital version of this painting. Three-dimensional (3D) animation means that viewers can see the characters move around. They can also watch as the different scenes change from daylight into nighttime. The art-tech combination is also changing our concepts (概念) of “art” and the “artist”. Not only can we interact with art, but also take part in its creation. With new technological tools at our fingertips, more and more people are exploring their creative sides. The result has been exciting new art forms, such as digital paintings and videos. However, the increase in the amount and variety of art produced has also raised questions over its overall quality, Can a video of someone slicing a tomato played in slow motion really be called “art”? Similarly, such developments are making the line between art and technology less distinct. Can someone unfamiliar with traditional artists’ tools really call themselves an “artist”? And is the artist the creator of the art itself. Or the maker of the technology behind it? A recent project used technology and data in the same way that Rembrandt used his paints and brushes. The end result printed in 3D, was a new “Rembrandt painting” created 347 years after the artist’s death. These advances are perhaps bringing us closer to a time when computers rather than humans create art. Where technology will take art next is anyone’s guess. But one thing is for sure—with so many artists exploring new possibilities, we can definitely expect the unexpected. 28. What is the main purpose of the first two paragraphs? A. To criticize the new forms of art exhibits. B. To lead readers to review how art develops. C. To draw readers’ attention to what can be called “art”. D. To compare the differences between eastern and western art. 29. The author mentions Along the River During the Qingming Festival to show that ________. A. the old way of displaying artworks is out of date B. artworks can be recreated with the help of technology C. art-tech combination changes the viewers into creators D. technology makes viewers appreciate classics more easily 30. According to the passage, the author might agree that ________. A. it is hard to recognize the difference between art and technology B. technology has improved the quantity and quality of artworks C. art and technology have been seen as a whole for a long time D. artworks have lost their value with the help of technology D Will chatbots that can generate fascinating articles destroy education as we know it? New York City’s Department of Education recently banned (禁止) the use of ChatGPT. “While the tool may be able to provide quick and easy answers to questions,” says the official statement, “it does not build critical-thinking skills, which are necessary for academic and lifelong success.” Banning such use of technology from the classroom is a nearsighted response. Instead, we must find a way forward in which such technologies combine well with, rather than replace, student thinking. Banning ChatGPT is impossible in practice. Students will find ways around the ban, which will cause a further defensive response from teachers and administrators, and so on. It’s hard to believe that a close race between those digital natives and their educators will end in a decisive victory for the latter. In fact, chatbots may well speed up a trend (趋向) toward valuing critical thinking. In a world where computers can fluently answer any question, students need to get much better at deciding what questions to ask and how to fact-check the answers the program generates. So how do we encourage young people to use their minds when real thinking is so hard to tell apart from its simulacrum (假象)? Teachers, of course, will still want to watch students taking old-fashioned, in-person, no-chatbot-allowed exams to check that they do not cheat. But we must also figure out how to do something new: how to use tools like GPT to inspire deeper thinking. GPT often generates text that is fluent and “reasonable” — but wrong. So using it requires the same mental heavy lifting that writing does: forming an opinion, creating an outline, picking which points to explain and which to drop, and looking for supporting facts. GPT can help with those tasks, but it can’t put them all together. Writing a good essay still requires lots of human thought and work. Indeed, writing is thinking, and good writing is good thinking. One approach is to focus on the process as much as the result. For instance, teachers might require four drafts of an essay. After all, as John McPhee, the famous writer, said, “the central nature of the process is revision.” Each draft gets feedback from the teacher, from peers or even from a chatbot. Then the students produce the next draft, and so on. Will AI one day outperform human beings in thinking? Maybe, but for now, we must think for ourselves. Like any tool, GPT is an enemy of thinking only if we fail to find ways to make it our partner. 31. How does the author feel about the ban? A. Understandable. B. Irresponsible. C. Unwise. D. Necessary. 32. Why is it impossible to ban ChatGPT in practice? A. Because students are digitally fluent. B. Because schools will defend the ban. C. Because ChatGPT will keep developing. D. Because people treasure critical thinking. 33. How does the author explain his idea in Paragraph 6? A. By quoting others. B. By presenting facts. C. By giving examples. D. By showing similarities. 34. What is the passage mainly about? A Is GPT a process or a result? B. Will GPT outperform students? C. Why Chatbots become a new trend? D. How can Chatbots serve education? Understanding The Metaverse The metaverse is rapidly being described as the next frontier in the tech, business, and finance world. The idea gained popularity in July 2021, after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg renamed the company to Meta to reflect its growing focus on the metaverse. Today, everyone, from major corporations like Microsoft and Disney to creative startups, is struggling to enter the market that is predicted to reach over $780 billion by 2024. ____35____ How will it affect the way we live and work? In simplest terms, the metaverse is a fully immersive (沉浸式) virtual world that is like our real life. ____36____ Instead, a functioning metaverse requires a combination of cutting-edge technologies like augmented reality (增强现实), virtual reality, 3D avatars, and artificial intelligence. Zuckerberg may have drawn the world’s attention to the metaverse, but the idea of a virtual world is not new. ____37____ For instance, Fortnite: Battle Royal, where 100 players battle it out on a small island until only one survivor is left, is a typical example of a virtual universe. ____38____ They imagine using the virtual platform to attend meetings, conferences, concerts, and even tour the world with friends. However, experts believe the technologies need to improve greatly before that happens. The still heavy virtual reality headsets often cause motion sickness and are not ready for long time use. The amount of computing power required to house billions of people worldwide in a virtual universe also presents an issue. The various Metaverse companies will also have different virtual worlds. They will have to standardize the technology so users can move seamlessly (无缝) between them. ____39____ A. But what exactly is the metaverse? B. The development of the metaverse still has a long way to go. C. However, a metaverse is not a specific type of technology. D. The metaverse industry will create jobs for hundreds and thousands of people. E. Most importantly, the virtual experience has to be very attractive and affordable for consumers. F. Fans believe that the metaverse will enable people to conduct their daily lives in an online world. G. The gaming industry has been building the fundamental elements of the metaverse for many years. I was in the final stretch of last work before writing my essay. The student who was 4 years behind me in the same Ph.D. program, went on to say, “I see people from your group working so much, putting in extra hours, even at night.” It set me thinking a lot. 26. Which can replace the underlined phrase “took a toll on” in Para. 3? C 25. A 26. B 27. 根据第一段““Are you all right?” the student asked as she passed me in the hallway. I was in the final stretch of last work before writing my essay. The student, who was 4 years behind me in the same Ph.D. program, went on to say, “I see people from your group working so much, putting in extra hours, even at night.”(“你没事吧?”那个学生在走廊里从我身边经过时问道。在写论文之前,我正处于最后一项工作的最后阶段。那个比我晚4年读博士的学生接着说:“我看到你们组的人工作很努力,加班加点,甚至在晚上也加班。”)”可知,这个学生关注作者的情况,询问作者身体状况,所以是很关心作者。故选C项。 【25题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“As a first-year Ph.D. student, I was lucky to have kind and understanding advisers. But I felt overwhelming pressure to become a perfect student. I kept finding a million reasons why I was coming into graduate school at a disadvantage compared with my peers. As a student from Colombia, I had been educated at institutions my professors and colleagues had never heard of, I spoke with an accent that was hard to understand, and I was older than most of the people in my cohort.(作为一名一年级的博士生,我很幸运有善良、善解人意的导师。但我感到了成为一个完美学生的巨大压力。我一直在找无数个理由,为什么我进入研究生院时,与同龄人相比处于劣势。作为一名来自哥伦比亚的学生,我在教授和同事们从未听说过的机构接受教育,我说话的口音让人听不懂,而且我比同龄人中的大多数人都年长)”可知,作者在刚开始的时候感到压力很大,担心自己的口音和年龄,所以起初作者是感觉焦虑的。故选A项。 根据前文“I crashed from burnout.(我精疲力竭了)”以及后文“During one of many mindless Sundays in the office, I realized I’d fallen into the trap of assuming my colleagues’ work habits were the standard for belonging and being worthy of respect—and it wasn’t sustainable.(在办公室里度过的一个毫无头脑的星期天里,我意识到自己掉进了一个陷阱,以为同事的工作习惯就是归属感和值得尊重的标准——而这是不可持续的)”可知,作者精疲力竭,在办公室工作时,毫无头绪,所以疲劳影响了他的工作效率,推知took a toll on是“对……有负面影响”之意,和B项意思相近。故选B项。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“From then on, I stopped counting the number of work hours I was putting in, leaving space every day for exercising and doing activities that I enjoyed. Eventually, I realized nobody was keeping track of the amount of time I spent in the lab anyway and it wasn’t something I needed to worry about.(从那时起,我不再计算我投入的工作时间,每天留出时间锻炼和做我喜欢的活动。最终,我意识到没有人记录我在实验室里花了多少时间,这不是我需要担心的事情)”以及最后一段“So, when I ran into her again, weeks later, I told her that even though I was feeling a lot of pressure in the final year of my Ph.D., I was putting my mental and physical health first and wasn’t working overtime. I also began to talk with other students about how quality sleep, physical activity, healthy eating, and reasonable work hours were a daily part of my routine.(所以,几周后,当我再次遇到她时,我告诉她,尽管我在博士学位的最后一年感到压力很大,但我还是把心理和身体健康放在第一位,没有加班。我也开始和其他学生谈论高质量的睡眠、体育锻炼、健康的饮食和合理的工作时间是我日常生活的一部分)”可知,作者主要想要告诉读者健康的工作与生活平衡很重要。故选A项。 C Art & Technology Think “art”. A. it is hard to recognize the difference between art and technology B. technology has improved the quantity and quality of artworks C. art and technology have been seen as a whole for a long time D. artworks have lost their value with the help of technology 【答案】28. C 29. D 30. What comes to your mind?(想到“艺术”你想到了什么?)”和第二段中“Exhibits such as these are certainly new and exciting, but are they really art? (这样的展品当然是新的,令人兴奋的,但它们真的是艺术吗?)”可知,此处通过问题,向人们提出“艺术到底是什么?”由此可知,前两段的目的主要是激发人们的阅读兴趣。故选C。 【29题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中“Thanks to technology however, millions more people have been able to experience a digital version of this painting. Three-dimensional (3D) animation means that viewers can see the characters move around. They can also watch as the different scenes change from daylight into nighttime. (然而,由于科技的发展,数以百万计的人能够体验到这幅画的数字版本。三维(3D)动画意味着观众可以看到角色的移动。它们还可以观看不同的场景,从白天变成夜晚)”可知,科技的进步,使得人们可以更容易的来欣赏艺术珍品。故选D。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Where technology will take art next is anyone’s guess. But one thing is for sure—with so many artists exploring new possibilities, we can definitely expect the unexpected. (谁都不知道科技会把艺术带向何方。但有一件事是肯定的——有这么多艺术家在探索新的可能性,我们肯定能预料到意想不到的事情)”可知,科技和艺术的结合在不久的将来一定会创造出意想不到的结果。由此可知,从长远来看,艺术和科技是可以合二为一的。故选C。 D Will chatbots that can generate fascinating articles destroy education as we know it? A. Is GPT a process or a result? B. Will GPT outperform students? C. Why Chatbots become a new trend? D. How can Chatbots serve education? C 32. A 33. B 34. 根据第三段“Banning such use of technology from the classroom is a nearsighted response. Instead, we must find a way forward in which such technologies combine well with, rather than replace, student thinking.(禁止在课堂上使用这种技术是一种目光短浅的反应。相反,我们必须找到一条前进的道路,让这些技术与学生的思维很好地结合在一起,而不是取代学生的思维。)”可知,作者认为这一禁令很不明智。故选C。 【32题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段第二句“Students will find ways around the ban, which will cause a further defensive response from teachers and administrators, and so on.(学生们会找到绕开禁令的方法,这将引起教师和管理人员进一步的防御性反应,等等。)” 故选A。 根据第六段最后五句“GPT often generates text that is fluent and “reasonable” — but wrong. So using it requires the same mental heavy lifting that writing does: forming an opinion, creating an outline, picking which points to explain and which to drop, and looking for supporting facts. GPT can help with those tasks, but it can’t put them all together. Writing a good essay still requires lots of human thought and work. Indeed, writing is thinking, and good writing is good thinking.(GPT通常生成流畅且“合理”的文本,但却是错误的。因此,使用它需要和写作一样的脑力劳动:形成观点,创建大纲,选择要解释哪些要点,哪些要点要放弃,寻找支持事实。GPT可以帮助完成这些任务,但它不能把它们放在一起。写一篇好文章仍然需要很多人的思考和工作。的确,写作就是思考,好的写作就是好的思考。)”可知,作者通过陈述事实来解释他的观点。故选B。 【34题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Will AI one day outperform human beings in thinking? Maybe, but for now, we must think for ourselves. Like any tool, GPT is an enemy of thinking only if we fail to find ways to make it our partner.(人工智能有一天会超越人类的思维能力吗?也许吧,但现在,我们必须为自己考虑。像任何工具一样,只有当我们找不到方法让它成为我们的伙伴时,GPT才是思考的敌人。)”和全文内容可知,作者核心在讨论如何让ChatGPT服务教育而非在未来超过学生。故选D。 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项 中有两项为多余选项。 Understanding The Metaverse The metaverse is rapidly being described as the next frontier in the tech, business, and finance world. A 36. C 37. G 38. F 39.
