Their hopes of survival had looked slim after the traumatic (创伤性的) start to their lives. But the baby elephants grew up strong thanks to their rescuer’s incredible love, care and attention. So when the day came for Roxy Danckwerts to say goodbye to Bumi, Moyo and five others she has helped and raised at her elephant nursery, it was a bittersweet moment.
Miss Danckwerts accompanied them every inch of the way as they were transported from the nursery run by her charity Wild Is Life (WIL) in Harare Zimbabwe, to a reserve on the southern African country’s western border. There they can learn to live independently, integrate with and eventually join established wild herds traveling through the area.
Bumi, a male aged three, was rescued when he was a month old in 2019.He had somehow got stuck among rocks and suffered severe sunburn in the terrible heat. After arriving at his new home on the 85,000-acre reserve, Bumi is pictured here enjoying a refreshing drink of water, next to Unity, who arrived at the nursery in 2017 after her mother stopped producing milk due to a drought, and Sienna, rescued in 2022 after being spotted alone aged 15 months and suffering from malnutrition
Moyo, a female now aged nine, was the first elephant rescued by WIL. She was days old and only knee-high when she was found stuck in water in 2014 during heavy rains. Roxy and Moyo formed a very special bond. Moyo began to regard her as her mother — and also grew up to be a solace to the other orphans that arrived at the nursery after her, taking them under her trunk and helping them to recover from their own traumas.
Miss Danckwerts has rescued dozens of baby elephants since she founded her nursery, the first of its kind in Zimbabwe. This is the third group to be transported by IFAW and WIL to the release facility. Miss Danckwerts’ work will now continue as more orphans arrive at her nursery. Doubtless, there will be many more magical moments to come which neither she nor, of course, the elephants will ever forget.

A. Another base of Wild Is Life.
B. A reserve in the west of Zimbabwe.
C. A shelter in a western African country.
D. Miss Danckwerts’ nursery in Zimbabwe.
5. What happened to Unity before she came to the nursery?
A. She lost her mother.
B. She suffered severe sunburn.
C. She was caught in the heavy rain.
D. She was threatened with starvation.
6. What does the underlined word “solace” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Comfort. B. Failure. C. Disaster. D. Promise.
7. We can infer from the last paragraph that Miss Danckwerts’ job is_______.
A. demanding B. frustrating C. fruitful D. wasteful

Most people who visit Michael Heizer’s City start out in Las Vegas, a place featuring the blaring sounds of slot machines, air conditioning, and the Bellagio Hotel’s famous fountains dancing in time to the songs of Celine Dion. So it’s quite a shock, after a three-hour drive north, to find yourself in the middle of the baking Nevada desert, surrounded by absolute silence.
For over five decades, American artist Michael Heizer has been working in this remote environment to complete a gigantic art work. Located at least a 90-minute drive from the nearest small town, and costing around $40 million in construction and maintenance, City is one of the largest artworks in the world. It recently opened to the public.
Heizer started work on City in 1970.The artist built his masterwork out of local rock and dirt. The site is more than one-and-a-half miles long by a half-mile wide, and consists of piles of low, gravel-covered mounds (土堆), as well as sculptures made of smooth concrete and rough stone separated by a network of rocky runways and winding streets.
Only up to six people are allowed to visit the work per day. Audiences aren’t permitted to take photos and can only engage with the work by being fully immersed in it. There’s no welcome center, restroom, or shade from the desert sun. There’s really nothing else to do except wander along the seemingly-endless dirt pathways, and get up close to the grand architectural forms.
Heizer became known for creating huge remote artworks that looked like they’d been put there by superhuman forces. When it comes to why he creates an art work on such a large scale, Heizer said, “I’m not here to tell people what it all means. You can figure it out for yourself.”
So National Public Radio (NPR) turned to Los Angeles County Museum of Art director Michael Govan, who has been helping Heizer get City ready for the public since the mid-1990s. “Heizer doesn’t come for the opening party,” said Govan. “He comes to make the work and to push definitions of what art is.”
8. How does the author highlight the “silent” feature of City?
A. By making a long list. B. By presenting some opinions.
C. By making a comparison. D. By presenting some facts.
9. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. What the art work is like. B. When the art work was built.
C. How the art work was created. D. Where the art work is situated.
10. What can tourists do at City?
A. Shelter under the trees. B. Wander along the dirt paths.
C. Participate in its creation. D. Share its beauty on social network.
11. What is Michael Heizer unwilling to do?
A. Create more artworks like City.
B. Voice his opinions on modern art.
C. Explain his purpose of creating City.
D. Figure out the meaning of an artwork.

In the United States nearly 15% of the 92 million tons of clothing and other textiles are recycled annually, meaning that about 17 million tons of textiles are sent to landfills each year.
Much of the problem lies in the fact that recyclers have a hard time knowing what exactly the item is made of, and thus, these mountains of textiles are incredibly difficult to sort. Tags are often cut off or washed, and printed information can wear off. Missing or inaccurate knowledge about an item’s fiber composition can make textile recycling cost-prohibitive.
Good news is that a University of Michigan-led team has developed woven-in labels made with inexpensive photonic fibers (光子纤维), which ensure that the materials used in clothes can be easily identified. “It’s like a barcode that’s woven directly into the fabric of clothes,” said Max Shtein, a University of Michigan professor. “We can customize the photonic properties of the fibers to make them visible to the naked eye, readable only under near-infrared (近红外) light or any combination.”
A similar concept is already in use by recyclers for some materials. Recyclers already use near-infrared sorting systems that identify different materials according to their naturally occurring optical (光学的) signatures. The PET plastic in a water bottle, for example, looks different under near-infrared light than the HDPE plastic in a milk jug.Like different plastics, different fabrics also have unique optical signatures. But as Brian Iezzi, lead author of the study, explains, those signatures don’t help recyclers much because so many fabrics are comprised of a mix of materials.
“For a truly circular recycling system to work, it’s important to know the precise composition of a fabric—a cotton recycler doesn’t want to pay for a piece of clothing that’s made of 70% polyester,” Iezzi said. “Natural optical signatures can’t provide that level of precision, but our photonic fibers can.”
“As electronic devices like cell phones develop, they could potentially have the ability to read this kind of photonic labeling,” Shtein said. “So I could imagine a future where woven-in labels are a useful feature for consumers as well as recyclers.”
12. What is the challenge in textile recycling in the US?
A. The poor quality in old clothes.
B. The difficulty in sorting textiles.
C. The high cost of collecting textiles.
D. The lack of drop-off sites for clothes.
13. What can we infer about the newly developed label?
A. It is hard to wear off. B. It looks like a barcode.
C. It is invisible to the naked eye. D. It contains more textile fibers.
14. What is Brian Iezzi’s attitude towards using near-infrared light to recycle clothes?
A. Supportive. B. Unconcerned. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
15. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Tons of textiles are landing in US landfills.
B. Fast fashion is endangering the environment.
C. Woven-in labels are the new fashion coming soon.
D. Clever invention revolutionizes clothing recycling.

Tim was a lonely boy who found peace of mind in the woods behind his house. He often wandered among the trees, escaping from his problems at school where he struggled to make friends. One day, as Tim was exploring, he found a small injured fox trapped in the bush.
With a gentle touch and kind words, Tim managed to free the fox. Its leg was badly injured, and Tim knew he had to help. Despite his limited resources, he made a makeshift bandage and tended to the fox’s wound.
Over the weeks that followed Tim visited the fox every day, bringing food and attending to its injuries. The fox, initially distrustful, grew to trust Tim. A special bond developed between them, and they became inseparable friends.
The fox’s playful nature brought joy and warmth to Tim’s life, while Tim’s care gave the fox a chance of recovery. Together, they explored the woods, played, and even shared quiet moments by the riverside.
As the fox’s leg healed, Tim realized that he had also healed in a way. The fox had taught him about trust, friendship, and the simple joys of life. He felt a connection he had never felt before, not with humans, but with this wild creature that had become his friend.
One day, as the winter approached, Tim understood that the fox needed to rejoin its family and live its life in the wild. With a heavy heart, he led the fox to the edge of the forest, knowing that it was time to say goodbye.
The fox seemed to understand, looking back at Tim with knowing eyes. They shared a final moment, a mutual gratitude for the friendship that had changed both their lives. Then, the fox turned and disappeared into the forest, leaving Tim with memories that would last a lifetime.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

Miss Danckwerts accompanied them every inch of the way as they were transported from the nursery run by her charity Wild Is Life (WIL) in Harare, Zimbabwe, to a reserve on the southern African country’s western border.
4. Where would the elephants be transported to?
A. demanding B. frustrating C. fruitful D. wasteful
B 5. D 6. A 7. C

根据文章第二段“Miss Danckwerts accompanied them every inch of the way as they were transported from the nursery run by her charity Wild Is Life (WIL) in Harare, Zimbabwe, to a reserve on the southern African country’s western border. (Danckwerts女士全程陪伴着它们,从她在津巴布韦哈拉雷经营的Wild Is Life(WIL)慈善机构的大象幼儿园,被运送到这个非洲南部国家西部边境的自然保护区。)”可知,这些大象被运送到津巴布韦西部的一个自然保护区。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“After arriving at his new home on the 85,000-acre reserve, Bumi is pictured here enjoying a refreshing drink of water, next to Unity, who arrived at the nursery in 2017 after her mother stopped producing milk due to a drought(抵达位于85000英亩保护区的新家后,布米在Unity旁边喝着一杯清凉的水,Unity在2017年来到这个幼儿园,当时它的母亲因为干旱而停止产奶)”可知,Unity在来到幼儿园之前,它的母亲因为干旱而停止产奶,可以推测它当时面临着饥饿的威胁。
根据画线词上文“Roxy and Moyo formed a very special bond. Moyo began to regard her as her mother(Roxy和Moyo之间形成了一种非常特殊的联系。Moyo开始把她当作自己的母亲)”以及画线词后文“taking them under her trunk and helping them to recover from their own traumas(用她的象鼻搂住它们,帮助它们从自己的创伤中恢复过来)”可知,Moyo把Roxy当作自己的母亲,而她长大后也模仿Roxy去安慰其他来到幼儿园的小象,即Moyo成了其他小象的“安慰”。 故选A项。
根据文章最后一段“Miss Danckwerts has rescued dozens of baby elephants since she founded her nursery, the first of its kind in Zimbabwe. This is the third group to be transported by IFAW and WIL to the release facility. Miss Danckwerts’ work will now continue as more orphans arrive at her nursery. Doubtless, there will be many more magical moments to come which neither she nor, of course, the elephants will ever forget.

C 9. A 10. B 11. C

根据第一段“Most people who visit Michael Heizer’s City start out in Las Vegas, a place featuring the blaring sounds of slot machines, air conditioning, and the Bellagio Hotel’s famous fountains dancing in time to the songs of Celine Dion. So it’s quite a shock, after a three-hour drive north, to find yourself in the middle of the baking Nevada desert, surrounded by absolute silence.
根据文章第三段“Heizer started work on City in 1970. The artist built his masterwork out of local rock and dirt. The site is more than one-and-a-half miles long by a half-mile wide, and consists of piles of low, gravel-covered mounds (土堆), as well as sculptures made of smooth concrete and rough stone separated by a network of rocky runways and winding streets. 故选A项。
根据文章第四段中“There’s really nothing else to do except wander along the seemingly-endless dirt pathways, and get up close to the grand architectural forms. (除了沿着看似无尽的泥土小径漫步,近距离欣赏宏伟的建筑形式外,真的没有别的事情可做)”可知,游客在《城市》可以沿着泥土小径漫步。故选B项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段中“When it comes to why he creates an art work on such a large scale, Heizer said, ‘I’m not here to tell people what it all means. You can figure it out for yourself.’ (当谈到为什么他要创作如此大规模的艺术作品时,Heizer说:‘我在这里不是为了告诉人们它意味着什么。你可以自己弄清楚。’)”可知,Heizer不愿意解释他创作《城市》的目的。故选C项。
D
In the United States, nearly 15% of the 92 million tons of clothing and other textiles are recycled annually, meaning that about 17 million tons of textiles are sent to landfills each year.
B 13. A 14. C 15. D

Over the weeks that followed, Tim visited the fox every day, bringing food and attending to its injuries.

As time went on, his loneliness was completely replaced with connections, and he even became more involved in animal welfare activities. The experience with the fox had transformed his perspective on relationships and helped him grow as a sociable person.
Years later, Tim still visited the woods, feeling the presence of his old friend. The bond that they shared continued to have an impact on his entire life, leading him to become an animal doctor.
