To avoid the crowds that often trouble Yellowstone, plan to visit in April, May, September or October.

First protected in 1864, Yosemite National Park stands out for its impressive waterfalls. The best time to see waterfalls is during spring, when most of the snowmelt occurs. There are also plenty of scenic hiking and camping opportunities. Just keep in mind that campsites sell out quickly after becoming available for booking, so make your reservations in advance.

Rick Guidotti put aside his career as a fashion photographer to turn his lens (镜头) to people living with genetic, physical and behavioural differences.
He says what changed his perception (看法) of beauty was a chance encounter with an albino (患白化病的) girl. “I was just tired of people telling me who was beautiful. Every season that face would change but I was always told who was beautiful. As an artist, I don’t see beauty just on covers of magazines. I see it everywhere. So that was my original intention — that opened my eyes a little wider and wider.”
Guidotti has created Positive Exposure, a not-for-profit organization that uses photography and video to transform public perceptions and promote a world where differences are celebrated. Guidotti and Positive Exposure are featured in a new documentary called On Beauty.
One of the women featured in the film is Jayne Waithera. “I never thought I was beautiful because nobody said that to me, but meeting him was my profound moment. I remember that particular day. He took my picture and I felt so good like I felt there’s somebody who, like, really loves me and sees me for who I am and who sees me more than my condition.”
Guidotti is travelling from city to city to promote On Beauty. He says his tour is not about money; it’s about the message. “As I travel from community to community, I’m taking photographs and I’m empowering (给某人……的权力) individuals with a positive sense of who they are. They’re seeing beauty in their reflection but I’m also empowering their families and they in turn are empowering their communities as well. All is based on the philosophy of change — how you see, how you change.”
24. Why did Guidotti change his career?
A. The beauty on covers of magazines is not beautiful.
B. He wanted to create his own company.
C. His comprehension of beauty changed owing to an albino girl.
D. He couldn’t earn enough money from his former career.
25. What can we know about Positive Exposure?
A. It welcomes differences in the world. B. It brings a lot of money for Guidotti.
C. It makes photography more popular. D. It makes the public more beautiful.
26. What does the author want to tell us by mentioning Jayne in Paragraph 4?
A. Jayne’s picture was more beautiful than herself.
B. Jayne was beautiful indeed.
C. Photographs gave Jayne a positive sense of who she was.
D. It was unfair that nobody discovered Jayne’s beauty.
27. What does the author mainly intend to tell us in the last paragraph?

B. We should travel frequently.
C. Your attitude to seeing the world decides your behaviour.
D. We should make contributions to our community.

When it comes to keeping off extra pounds, watching what we eat may not be enough—we have to keep an eye on our food’s packaging, too. Half the world is expected to be overweight by 2035. In addition to overeating and lack of exercise, the scientific community is exploring another factor that may contribute—eating products packaged in plastic.
For a study published last year, researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology set out to determine what chemical compounds (化合物) exist in 34 common plastic items that touch things we eat, such as yogurt cups, juice bottles, candy packages, and plastic wrap used for produce and cheese, as well as items often found in kitchen.
Of the 55,000 chemicals the researchers found in these items, only 629 were identifiable, which influence our bodies’ ability to regulate weight, troubling health effects. “We’re quite certain that there are many chemicals in plastic products that impact metabolism (新陈代谢), but we just couldn’t identify all of them,” Martin Wagner, a study co-author said. Strikingly, Wagner and his colleagues found that a third of all the common products they tested contain chemicals that cause the adipogenic (生脂的) process. Although we are exposed to them daily, most of these mystery chemicals are unknown, unstudied and unregulated.
For years, experts have been warning against plastic food containers, particularly for hot or oily foods which may make the plastics unstable and increase the risk of chemical leaching (渗出). As one of them, Wagner argues that we need to start reducing our exposure to plastic without waiting for more slow-moving research to prove that the plastics in our food, products, blood and organs are risk factors for bad health outcomes.

Those of you who have seen the amazing National Geographic documentary Free Solo will know just how fascinating it can be to watch a professional climber scale the side of a mountain.
A new documentary, Explorer: The Last Tepui, shares a lot with Free Solo, which won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Not only does it star rock climber Alex Honnold, it also shows him hanging off the side of a mountain in precarious positions that will make your stomach drop in extreme fear.
While his athletic achievements are amazing, Honnold isn’t the most appealing character in the film. That honor goes to Bruce Means, who has spent his academic career finding new species throughout South America to prove to the world that the area is a biodiversity hot spot to be protected at all costs. In Explorer:The Last Tepui, the 80-year-old ecologist decides to climb the 300-plus metres to the peak of the Tepui, deep in Guyana’s Amazon rainforest.
Means, Honnold, leader Mark Synnott and a world-class team of climbers have to hike 56 kilometres over 10 days across increasingly dangerous areas to reach the base of the Tepui. This is a very big deal because Means has problems with his knees. Once at the Tepui, Honnold and other team members plan to climb to the top and then pull Means up, which will allow him to explore the cliff wall for novel animal and plant species.
Unsurprisingly, because of the area they must cross to reach the Tepui, various major barriers soon get in the way of the party. The detailed descriptions of Means’ determination to overcome these challenges due to his age and health just add real suspense (悬念) to the documentary.
The constantly changing viewpoints and potentially life-threatening issues ensure that Explorer: The Last Tepui remains compelling (扣人心弦的) to the very end. Even though it is just 54 minutes long, you will still feel tired out, as well as inspired, by the time it is over.
32. What does the underlined word “precarious” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Comfortable. B. Dangerous. C. Easy. D. Correct.
33. What makes the documentary Explorer: The Last Tepui most eye-catching?
A. The 2019 Academy Award.
B. The discovery of new species.
C. Means’ plan to climb the peak of the Tepui.
D. Honnold’s appearance in the film.
34. What is Honnold’s role in the documentary Explorer: The Last Tepui?
A. Ensuring food supplies at the base of the Tepui.
B. Topping the Tepui as quickly as possible.
C. Helping Means find long lost species.
D. Assisting Means in carrying out the exploration.
35. What does the author think of the documentary Explorer: The Last Tepui?
A. It is inspiring and funny.
B. It is long and tiring.
C. It is full of heart-stopping moments.
D. It is filled with complicated elements.
【答案】32. B 33. B 34. D 35. C

【33题详解】

【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Once at the Tepui, Honnold and other team members plan to climb to the top and then pull Means up, which will allow him to explore the cliff wall for novel animal and plant species.(一旦到达Tepui,Honnold和其他团队成员计划爬到山顶,然后把Means拉上来,这样他就可以探索悬崖壁,寻找新的动植物物种)”可知,Honnold在该纪录片中的角色是协助Means进行探索,故选D。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The constantly changing viewpoints and potentially life-threatening issues ensure that Explorer: The Last Tepui remains compelling (扣人心弦的) to the very end.(不断变化的观点和潜在的危及生命的问题确保了Explorer: The Last Tepui直到最后都是扣人心弦的)”可知,作者认为该纪录片充满了惊心动魄的时刻,故选C。

Alex was a friendly boy, but he had a bad temper and often found it challenging to control his anger. Whenever something didn’t go his way or if he felt upset, a fiery anger would build up inside him like an angry monster.
One sunny afternoon, Alex went to the playground with his friends, Sarah and Ben. They were excited to play on the swings, slide, and monkey bars. As they started playing, Alex’s turn on the swing was interrupted by another child who cut in line. Alex felt his anger rising inside him, and without thinking, he shouted at the child very angrily, demanding his turn back. Sarah and Ben looked at Alex with surprise, scare and depression. They didn’t like it that their friend lost his temper like a monster and yelled. They stopped playing together.
Alex’s anger not only ruined his own mood but also spoiled (破坏) the fun for his friends and the other children at the playground. Feeling ashamed and realizing the consequences of his actions, Alex slumped (跌坐) down on a nearby bench. He saw his friends playing happily without him, and he felt upset at losing control.
Alex’s memories flooded back when his friends and family were often taken aback by his outbursts. When his best friend, Emily, wanted to play a game he didn’t like, he would shout and throw a tantrum (发脾气), refusing to play with her. His little sister accidentally knocked over his tower of blocks, he would explode in a fit of rage, yelling and stomping his feet.
He had lost a lot of fiends and hurt his family because of his anger. Now he might lose these friends too. He realized that his mean words constantly hurt the people he cared about. He didn’t want to be like a monster anymore, so he decided to find a better way to handle his anger.

She gently placed her hand on Alex’s shoulder and said, “My dear Alex, anger is a normal emotion, but it’s important to learn to manage anger and express feelings without hurting others.” Grandma taught Alex a simple technique — take slow, deep breaths whenever he felt anger creeping up inside him. She also encouraged him to take a moment to reflect on his feelings and put himself in others’ shoes before reacting impulsively.
Alex made up his mind to change. The next day, Alex encountered many situations that would typically trigger his anger at school. But he chose a different approach. His newfound ability to manage his anger made a noticeable difference. His friends noticed the positive change in him and began inviting him to join activities. With each passing day, Alex’s relationships with his family and friends grew stronger. Looking back, Alex felt it was wise to learn to manage his anger with the help of his Grandma and create harmonious interpersonal relationship.

Every year, national parks are crowded with visitors. Here are the top four named by The National Park Service.
Glacier National Park
In 1910, Glacier was established as the country’s 10th national park. Take advantage of the park’s expansive hiking trails(路线), and be sure to hit traveler favorites like the Trail of the Cedars and Iceberg Lake Trail. What’s more, Glacier National Park hosts plenty of free activities like guided hikes and appealing events ideal for visitors of all ages.
Grand Canyon National Park
First protected in 1893 as a forest reserve, the Grand Canyon became an official US national park in 1919. The park offers endless hiking opportunities with trails of various lengths, as well as the chance to raft(漂流)the Colorado River. And if you’re looking for a different point, consider a helicopter tour to learn more about the park and see it in all its glory from above.
Yellowstone National Park
The world famous site became the first national park in the U. S. on March 1,1872, when President Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act into law. Here, hikers can get lost in the beauty of the lakes, mountains, valleys and, of course, its unmatched hot springs. To avoid the crowds that often trouble Yellowstone, plan to visit in April, May, September or October.
Yosemite National Park
First protected in 1864, Yosemite National Park stands out for its impressive waterfalls. The best time to see waterfalls is during spring, when most of the snowmelt occurs. There are also plenty of scenic hiking and camping opportunities. Just keep in mind that campsites sell out quickly after becoming available for booking, so make your reservations in advance.
21. Which park may attract people interested in water activities?
A. Glacier National Park. B. Yosemite National Park.
C. Yellowstone National Park. D. Grand Canyon National Park.
22. What does Yellowstone National Park feature?

A. Communities have a great influence on everyone.

For years experts have been warning against plastic food containers, particularly for hot or oily foods which may make the plastics unstable and increase the risk of chemical leaching (渗出). As one of them, Wagner argues that we need to start reducing our exposure to plastic without waiting for more slow-moving research to prove that the plastics in our food, products, blood and organs are risk factors for bad health outcomes.
Really, reducing our plastic exposure should be our overall goal. When we think about cutting junk out of our diets, the criminals shouldn’t just be candy and soda—plastic needs to go, too.
28. What newly-found factor may cause overweight?
A. Eating too much. B. Lack of exercise.
C. Unhealthy eating habits. D. Food’s plastic packaging.
29. What is the finding of the study published last year?
A. Most products tested contain adipogenic chemicals.
B. Metabolism is affected by chemicals in plastic products.
C. The influence of plastic products on our health is unknown.
D. Only 629 chemicals in plastic products regulate people ‘s weight.
30. What does Wagner suggest we do?
A. Stop eating foods packaged in plastic.
B. Avoid using plastic products for hot or oily foods.
C. Reduce our exposure to plastic as much as possible.
D. Wait for more research to prove the risks of plastics.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Keeping off extra pounds is urgent.
B. It’s high time to stop using plastic packaging.
C. Chemicals in plastic packaging may lead to overweight.
D. Plastic food packaging proves to contain harmful chemicals.

34 What is Honnold’s role in the documentary Explorer: The Last Tepui?
