One of the world’s greatest living artists, David Hockney, has shown his latest work Bigger Christmas Trees at London’s Battersea Power Station, home to Apple’ s new U. K. headquarters. From 5:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on December 1, until Christmas Day, a pair of Christmas trees could light up the London landmark’s two wash towers on the building’s north facade (正面). Using an iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil, David Hockney created a 10-minute animation (动画) that brings to life the famous 100-meter-tall chimneys overlooking the River Thames. The trees are made up of bright green and purple lights; they create such a view that makes people momentarily forget how cold it is.
Hockney said, “I love to make nature look as exciting as it is. Battersea Power Station is such a beautiful building; I wanted to decorate it in a way that would bring joy and hope to Londoners. I will always be working to make things look pretty. And I will always be looking around me and making art.” He has created some new and impressive works in praise of the natural world.
The Christmas installation isn’t Hockney’s first attempt at digital art. In 2018, glass artists turned one of his iPad illustrations (插图) into a real colorful glass window in Westminster Abbey. In addition to the illuminated trees, London art lovers can catch a Hockney exhibition, “Drawing from Life”, at the National Portrait Gallery through January 21. Additionally, a big show, “Bigger& Closer (Not Smaller & Further Away)”, featuring projections of Hockney’s art recently came to an end at London’s Lightroom. His digital artworks have been displayed across the world.
“David is one of the world’s most influential artists, and we are counting down the days to the view of his latest creation lighting up Battersea Power Station,” says Greg Joswiak, Apple’ s senior vice president of worldwide marketing. “Meanwhile, we are honored that he chooses iPad for his work, and to create this beautiful Christmas gift for the people of London.”
4. What is special about Hockney’s latest artwork?
A. It is a painting of London’s landmark.
B. It shows a Christmas feature in a digital way.
C. It helps advertise digital products during Christmas.
D. It offers an impressive experience with traditional art.
5. What drove Hockney to present the creation?
A. His curiosity about new technologies.
B. His willingness to spread a positive spirit.
C. His dissatisfaction with common decorations.
D. His intention to promote environmental awareness.
6. What can we learn about Hockney from Paragraph 3?
A. He is highly experienced in digital art creation.
B. He is making London become more international.
C. He projects digital artworks with the help of art lovers.
D. He usually holds exhibitions on social media platforms.
7. How does Greg Joswiak probably feel about Hockney’s artwork?

Child psychologists have long known that play is important for children’s intellectual development. But beginning in the 21st century, specialists repeatedly sounded the alarm that play is under siege. Increased focus on the academic achievement and standardized testing, connected with fewer physical education classes, and the lack of outdoor play spaces have limited children’s opportunities for play.
“Until recently, people generally considered play to be the opposite of learning. What we see in our study is that this separation no longer exists in the eyes of parents. This is a positive development,” says Charlotte Wright, a senior research associate. “Here we show that US parents understand that play can be more powerful for learning than direct instruction.”
1,172 US parents aged between 22 and 75 were interviewed. The results showed that parents tended to rate free play as best for learning, followed by guided play, games, and direct instruction. The research finds that guided play is more effective than free play for children to learn skills such as mathematics, language, and the spatial awareness. Guided play requires that parents engage with (与……打交道) their children during a play experience, which might lead them to undervalue guided play.
Guided play differs from free play in being initiated (发起) by the adult while letting the child drive him/her to learn towards a specific goal. Adults give children choice and voice. For example, Raouf’s father, Ola, says to Raouf, “I wonder if we can build a tall tower with these blocks.” Ola follows Raouf’s lead as Raouf tries to build the tower, asking questions to support him when necessary (eg, “Our tower keeps falling when we put the blue block on the bottom! What is another block we could try?”).
Senior author Dr. Kathy Hirsh-Pasek said, “We need to improve parents’ understanding of the importance of play so that they can create guided play opportunities in everyday activities like doing laundry, taking a walk in the park, or playing with a puzzle. As parents come to see these as learning moments in everyday play, their children will develop well, while they will have more fun being parents.”
8. Which of the following best explains the underlined part in Paragraph 1?
A. Play is less enjoyable. B. Play is meeting challenges.
C. Play is losing its significance. D. Play is becoming more popular.
9 What does Charlotte Wright mainly want to express with her words?
A. Parents recognize the educational value of play.
B. Parents had better organize more family activities.
C. Parents prefer direct instruction to play for learning.
D. Parents need to raise children’s learning confidence.
10. In which aspect do researchers and parents have different views?
A. The time required for free play.
B. The skills necessary for young children.
C. The effectiveness of several play types.
D. The influence of parental engagement in play.
11. What is a main character of guided play according to the example?
A. Children follow adult instructions step by step.
B. Children take the lead to drive their exploration.
C. Adults control children’s play with a specific goal.
D. Adults join in creative tasks suggested by children.

Tiny pieces of plastic pollute so many things all over the world — including drinking water, as well as the air and many foods. As a result, data now suggest all of us have microplastics in our bodies. Some plastics contain harmful substances. And many polluting chemicals will stick to microplastics. Not surprisingly, these plastic bits have been posing risks to wildlife in every place from rivers to the ocean.
Menake Piyasena is a chemist who worked with Nelum Perera, a graduate student. The team’s new system turned to ultrasound (超声波). The researchers send dirty water down a tube. Bits of plastic can be found throughout the water. The tube’s water flows past a device that changes electrical energy into sound energy. It makes ultrasound waves. When they hit microplastics, these waves apply a force to the particles (微粒). Ones that are less than about 180micrometers across will move to the center of the flow. Larger ones that are close to the ultrasound’s wavelength will influence each other and produce an additional force. This sends those larger particles toward the edges of the flowing water.
Their ultrasound treatment can remove about four in every five plastic bits from the water. It takes about 90 minutes to clean one liter. It costs only about 10 cents to do that. And unlike screens used as filters (过滤器), this system will not get blocked or need regular replacement.
“Microplastics are a problem worldwide,” says research chemist Souhail Al-Abed, who is interested in anything that can get microplastics out of water. “Unlike microplastics in the lab, water outdoors will also contain other materials, such as microbes, dirt and so on. Seawater, for example, contains salt. This technology still requires further testing, and more work needs to be done before it can work excellently outside controlled conditions.”
For now, Piyasena and Perera plan to test water from the ocean and other sources. “We expect by having some tubes tied together, we can increase the rate of removing microplastics. Research does not have all the answers on day 1, day 2 or day 100. But continuing work may overcome the challenges, and prove a good recipe for the future,” Perera says.
12. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. Microplastics exist in various forms.
B. Polluting chemicals break the ecosystem badly.
C. Microplastic pollution brings wide-ranging harm.
D. Efforts have been made to remove plastic pollution.
13. What matters greatly to the new system’s collecting plastics?
A. The speed of water flow. B. The direction of the force.
C. The type of a plastic material. D. The size of those plastic bits.
14. What can we say about the ultrasound treatment?
A. It is slow and unsustainable. B. It requires frequent upgrades.
C. It is efficient and long-lasting. D. It can apply to other ocean waste.
15 What does Souhail Al-Abed mainly want to express in Paragraph 4?
A. Microplastic pollution remains an unsolved issue.
B. This technology is hardly prepared for widespread use.
C. This system plays a leading role in providing safe water.
D. Water outdoors is improper for microplastic research now.

Did you grow up making DIY paper chains and snowflakes? ___19___ And let go of the ones you don’t. Then allow yourself to do something different.

【答案】A Memorable Documentary Screening
Last Friday, our school organized a documentary screening, aiming to raise students’ awareness of firefighters’ dedication.
The documentary focused on firefighters’ heroic efforts in putting out a wildfire. The scenes of them charging fearlessly into the inferno, facing extreme danger to save lives and property, were deeply moving.
I was greatly touched by their selflessness and courage. Their deeds remind us that there are always people willing to risk their lives for the public good. This activity not only educated us about their tough job but also inspired us to be more responsible citizens.
