This year’s events are scheduled for 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. , Nov. 2, in downtown Baton Rouge. What can people expect? The festival is a full day of programming with authors presenting their books. After each program, the authors are scheduled for a book signing in the book tent, so you can see an author and then go to the book tent and get your book signed by the author. In the book tent, all of the featured books are available for purchase through our partner, Cavalier House Books in Denham Springs. How are books/authors selected? We have a selection committee, and anybody can recommend a book to us. It’s an ongoing process from one festival to another. As we find out about books, we start inviting authors continually throughout the year. Part of our mission is to be supportive of Louisiana authors and Louisiana publishers. So, we always find out from Louisiana publishers what books they have coming out in the next year before the festival. Special programming? We have someone coming to the festival who is an internationally recognized expert on the Beatles Bruce Spizer. He’s done a series of books on different albums by the legendary band. One thing special that we’re doing this year is that we’re going to do a virtual, live program with James Lee Burke, a national bestseller from Louisiana. We have a full day of poetry too. The Lousiana Poet Laureate (桂冠诗人), Allison Pelegrin, will be hosting two panels that feature Louisiana poets. This year, poet David Kirby is receiving the Louisiana Writer Award. B When she was younger, Julia Foland wanted to learn another language. “I tried taking Spanish in school and I tried to self-study French. However, these languages didn't seem to match with me. I couldn't really find passion in studying them, ” she said. “A friend of mine took Korean classes when she attended college, and hearing her stories about studying Korean was the main motivation for me to start. ” After high school, Foland took a gap year before continuing her education. She came to College of DuPage because her mother talked about how much she loved it. When she visited the campus, she was attracted by the Korean language program. Finally, Foland connected with another language. She enjoyed it so much that she entered the Midwest Korean Speech Contest, encouraged by her instructor, Miran Lee. “Thanks to Mr. Lee, by the day of the contest I had gained so much confidence. I couldn't believe it when they announced me as the winner. ” Foland received a scholarship to attend the Sungkyunkwan University Korean Language Center in Seoul. She attended classes taught entirely in Korean and found the intensive study a perfect opportunity to improve her skills. “I was the only Western student in my class. Most of my friends couldn't speak English, so we had to communicate only through Korean. I feel like this was a huge reason why my Korean skills improved. I think I've even improved in expressing myself in English. I've gained a lot more confidence when interacting with others and I realized how much I like harmonizing with people. I also realized how much interest I have in people different from me, because there's truly so much to learn from them. ” For anyone interested in studying languages, Foland said, “Don't hesitate. Language programs are an excellent way to start your journey and familiarize yourself with your chosen language. ” 4. What motivated Foland to start learning Korean? A. Her mother's impact on him. B. Her teacher's encouragement. C. A friend's relevant experiences. D. A desire to learn about another country. 5. How did Foland feel about the result of the Midwest Korean Speech Contest? A. Amazed. B. Dismissive. C. Confident. D. Disappointed. 6. How did learning Korean benefit Foland? A. She became more outgoing. B. Her sociability was enhanced. C. Her English level was improved. D. She would have more choices. 7. What's Foland's suggestion for language lovers? A. Engage in learning via language programs. B. Travel abroad and learn by experience. C. Avoid self-studying a foreign language. D. Take a gap year to learn a new language. C For the first time, people can talk with an older version of themselves, using an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) — powered chatbot. The Future You project, created by researchers at MIT Media Lab, uses AI to create a model of a user’s 60 to 70-year-old self. Users can converse with the AI through text on topics such as how to achieve what they want in life based on their circumstances, beliefs and outlook. The first component of Future You is an image generation model called StyleClip. After the user uploads a selfie (自拍照), the system uses age-progression models to predict what they’ll look like at age 60, adding features like wrinkles. The training data for Future You’s chatbot comes from the data a user provides when asked questions about the current state of their life, their goals and concerns for their future. These answers are processed by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which creates an architecture the researchers call “future memory”. It offers predictions about the user’s future based on the questionnaire answers, using training data from a wider dataset of people talking about their life experiences in their careers, relationships and beyond. The chatbot, which adopts a persona based on the user’s responses, then answers the user’s questions about what their life might be like and offers advice about possible pathways to the future they want. Future You’s programmers were careful to protect users against potential negative effects in the conversations with their future selves. The system routinely reminds the user that it’s only presenting one potential future based on the questionnaire answers, with different answers producing completely different outcomes. According to the researchers, a stronger sense of future self-continuity can positively influence the way people make long-term decisions. “This work takes a well-established psychological technique to visualize times to come,” said Jeremy Bailenson, director of the Virtual Human Interaction Lab at Stanford University. “This is exactly the type of work academics should be focusing on as technology to build virtual self models integrates with large language models.” 8. What does the Future You chatbot use to generate responses? A. Analysis about general trends in aging. B. Summary from other people’s experiences. C. Users’ answers and a broad life experience dataset. D. Data directly taken from users’ daily conversations. 9. What does the underlined phrase “adopts a persona” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Takes on a character. B. Gathers related information. C. Learns new skills. D. Makes career plans. 10. What is one potential benefit for users to interact with a future self? A. Improving their appearance. B. Staying focused on the present. C. Predicting the changes in users’ personality. D. Gaining deep insights into future choices. 11. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. AI Predicts Life Success B. Exploring Your Future Self With AI C. The Rise of Virtual Reality in Education D. Improve Personality With Technology D Scarcity (稀缺性) is a common condition of human existence. Every day the circumstances of limited resources can make indıvıduals experience a sense of scarcity. Scarcity functions like an obstacle to goal pursuit which intensify the value of goal. Scarcity prioritizes our choices and it can make us more effective. The time pressure of a deadline focuses our attention on using what we have most effectively. When we have little time left, we try to get more out of every moment. For example, we are more economical with the toothpaste as the tube starts to run empty, and college seniors tend to get the most out of their time before graduation. Many stores strategically create perception of scarcity to motivate consumer behavior. For example, the pricing practice of limiting number of items per person can lead to increased sales. The sign implies that the items are in short supply and shoppers should feel some urgency about storing up. The fear of missing out can have a powerful effect on shoppers. For an item that is attractive to begin with, its attractiveness will intensify when it is scarce. For instance, warning labels on violent television programs, designed to decrease interest, often backfire and increase in watching the programs. A saying goes like this: the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Scarcıty also contributes to an interesting and a meaningful life. In the words of Professor Todd May when there is always time for everything, there is no urgency for anything. A life without limits would lose the beauty of its moments, and it would become boring. Scarcity shows that reminding individuals of the reality of death increases the value of life. Midlife often heightens the feeling that there is not enough time left in life to waste. We overcome the illusion (幻觉) that we can be anything, do anything, and experience everything. We restructure our lives around the needs that are essential. 12. What do we tend to do when the toothpaste is running out? A. Use less of it. B. Throw it away. C. Put it away. D. Use it up at once. 13. Why do warning labels fail to stop people watching violent programs? A. The programs have appealing openings. B. People want things that they cannot get. C. There are few violent programs available. D. The message on warning labels is hard to understand. 14. Which of the following shows the effectiveness of the scarcity strategy? A. A man enjoys his life in the hope that it’s limitless. B. A car company constantly launches new model cars. C. A market puts up a “Only two cans per person” poster. D. A 50-year-old finds life increasingly boring. 15. What is the purpose of the author in writing this passage? A. To prove a theory. B. To offer a solution. C. To challenge a concept. D. To illustrate a phenomenon. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Greenwashing is the process of conveying a false impression or providing misleading information about how a company’s products are environmentally sound. Companies involved in greenwashing behavior might make claims that their products are from recycled materials or have energy-saving benefits. ___16___ But companies engaged in greenwashing typically exaggerate (夸大) the benefits. For example the manufacturer of a rug who increased the recycled content from 2% to 3% can label it as 50% more recycled content than before. Although technically true, the message conveys the false impression. ___17___ Greenwashing is an attempt to take advantage of the growing demand for environmentally sound products, whether that means they are more natural, healthier, free of chemicals, recyclable, or less wasteful of natural resources. The marketers of truly green products are only too happy to be specific about the beneficial attributes (特性) of their products. The website for Allbirds, for example, explains that its sneakers are made from merino wool, with laces made from recycled plastic bottles, and insoles that contain castor bean oil. ___19___ An environmental marketing claim should specify whether it refers to the product, the packaging, or just a portion of the product or package. A plastic package containing a new shower curtain is labeled “recyclable”. ___20___ But in either case, the label is deceptive if any part of the package or its content cannot be recycled. A. Some of the environmental claims might be partly true. B. Of course, not all companies are involved in greenwashing. C. It is not clear whether the package or the content is recyclable. D. I asked the receptionist why they were collecting shoes. The receptionist told me that one of their optometrists participated in an annual eye-care mission in Africa. For a few weeks every year, the mission serviced people who didn’t have access to eye care or glasses. During the optometrist’s previous trip, he observed that many of the children who lined up for eye care had bare feet. He planned to take the donated shoes and offer them to his patients on his next eye-care mission. The woman next to me snorted (轻哼) and said something rude about poor people. Her words shocked and upset me. Normally, I wouldn’t respond to a stranger’s rude comments, but I felt I had to speak up and make it clear that I found her remark unacceptable. I told the woman there were many other countries in the world that had similar issues. She challenged me to provide a personal example of how I was aware of this. I described our first trip to Cuba years ago when our family was on vacation at what was advertised as a luxury resort (度假区) in Holguin, a city in eastern Cuba. The resort was pleasant. My husband is a tennis enthusiast and decided to take some tennis lessons, while I sat on the sidelines observing his performance. During his first lesson, we both noticed the instructor’s tennis shoes were in poor condition. My husband enjoyed his instructor’s company and, after each lesson, we would have a chat with the instructor about the social and economic challenges of everyday life in Cuba. One day, the instructor commented on how much he admired my husband’s tennis shoes. He talked about how expensive it was to obtain good tennis gear in Cuba. During their conversation, my husband learned they had the same shoe size. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 After finishing his last lesson, my husband did something that surprised the instructor. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The woman sat in silence until she was called for her appointment. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 绝密★启用前 辽宁省县域重点高中2024~2025学年度高三二模试卷 英语 本试卷满分150分,考试时间120分钟。 1. When changing shoes, rather than putting his tennis shoes in his sports bag, my husband offered the shoes to his instructor. The instructor became very emotional as he thanked my husband and accepted the shoes. After telling this story to the woman, I told the woman that after our trip to Cuba, we became more conscious of donating our gently used clothing and shoes to organizations that redirected these items to people in need. The woman sat in silence until she was called for her appointment. As she got up, she turned toward me and said, “I've learned a lesson today. We should be thankful for what we have and never take things for granted. ” When the woman walked by the receptionist, I was delighted to hear the woman tell the receptionist she planned to return later in the afternoon with a bag of gently used shoes for the donation box. I had also learned a lesson that day. Respectfully speaking up in the face of offensive comments can actually work! 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
