Well, the future may be closer than you think. Let’s take a look at some modes of transport that we could be using in the future. Flying taxi Slovakian engineering company AeroMobil has designed the world’s first 4-seater flying taxi. AeroMobil’s AM Next is a hybrid - half supercar, half lightweight aircraft. It’s able to transform between the two modes of transport in fewer than 3 minutes as its wings move into the appropriate positions. It is expected to be released in 2028 and will be able to fly a distance of up to 500 miles (about 800 kilometers) between major cities. Gyroscopic transport Gyroscopic (陀螺的) transport is a revolutionary new mode of transport that is being planned. It is the use of large pods supported by flexible legs that transport passengers over existing roads. These legs can adjust their length according to traffic demands and to allow passengers to board. The whole structure is balanced on gyroscopes, which allows the main pod to maintain its orientation while moving. One of the best elements of this mode of transport is that it can operate over existing infrastructure. Dahir Insaat, a company looking to find the future of transportation, has already built a model system that could one day be used in cities, according to The Times of India. Hyperloop Hyperloop (超级高铁) has created a lot of excitement recently and received backing from many influential people in the tech world. Elon Musk, CEO of Space X, is one of the main proponents (支持者) of the hyperloop. He has suggested it could ease traffic in Los Angeles, US. The hyperloop is an ultra-high-speed public transportation system in which passengers travel in autonomous electric pods at about 965 kilometers per hour, according to the website of Musk’s tunnel excavation (挖掘) firm, Boring Company. Using pressurized (密封) underground tunnels, people, goods and even vehicles can travel quickly. “You just drive on, and the pod departs,” Musk told Bloomberg Businessweek. Virgin Hyperloop, a US transport technology company, conducted its first human trials of a hyperloop system in November 2020. The hyperloop system managed to reach speeds of up to 172km/h, according to The Guardian. The hyperloop is set to be introduced in various cities all across the world in the near future. 36 What do we know about AeroMobil’s AM Next? A. It will be the world’s first flying car. B. It could be in use in just 2 years’ time. C. It can fly a maximum of 800 miles each trip. D. It can switch between modes within 3 minutes. 37. What is an advantage of gyroscopic transport? A. It can travel either above or below ground. B. It can travel independent of traffic flow on the roads. C. It’s quicker and cheaper to build than other vehicles. D. It can hold more passengers than other forms of transport. 38. What is Elon Musk’s attitude toward the hyperloop? A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Critical. D. Positive. 39. According to the passage, which company has conducted the first human trials of a hyperloop system? A. Boring Company. B. Virgin Hyperloop. C. Space X. D. Dahir Insaat. 40. What potential advantage of the hyperloop compared to traditional modes of transportation can be inferred from the passage? A Faster travel speeds. B. Longer travel distances. C. Reduced energy consumption. D. Lower operational costs. B Recently, as I watched my son Nathan playing basketball game, I felt sorry for myself and for him. He was playing in the other team’s home gym filled with their supporters, and Nathan’s team was falling behind for three quarters of the game. As for me, I was dismissed from my job earlier in the day. Watching the difficult situation that my son was experiencing, I remembered that during the drive home earlier in the day, I kept telling myself that “just like last time I experienced this, I’ll find work again in a short time—I’m confident in my experience and abilities and believe in myself.” But then, self-doubt hit me. The basketball game entered the fourth quarter with Nathan’s team still falling behind. I saw the determination on his, as well as his teammates’ faces as they fought back to not only tie with the other team, but then go ahead by three points. Then, the scores were tied again. With a tie game and seconds on the clock, Nathan found himself with the ball, and with skill and confidence, he moved forward to make the basket with a defender hanging all over him. The other player was called for a foul. As Nathan stood at the foul line preparing for a shot that would put his team up by three points, I saw the focus and determination on his face; there was no room for self-doubt. He made it, helping his team win the game. Later he told me he didn’t know how he did it because he had lost all feelings in his right arm from being thrown to the floor earlier the game. As my heart burst with pride I realized something. I had taught my son—perseverance in the face of difficulties, and he had just taught me the same lesson. That brief moment of self-doubt and feeling sorry for myself was swept away by the actions of my son on the basketball court. He’ll play in the finals, but it doesn’t matter if he wins or loses. On that day, we both won. 41. Why did the author feel sorry? A. He used to be too busy to accompany Nathan. B. Nathan’s team was too weak to compete in the game. C. He had made a big mistake in his work. D. He and Nathan were both going through a hard time. 42. What can be inferred about the author? A. He had lost his job more than once. B. He always lacked self-confidence. C. He didn’t know his abilities well. D. He disliked the job he had been doing. 43. How was the last quarter of the game? A. Nathan’s teammates lost hope. B. The other team played casually. C. The game was very fierce at last. D. It ended up with a big score difference. 44. We can learn from the passage that Nathan________. A. had always been the author’s pride and joy B. wouldn’t have won but for the author’s C. wasn’t surprised at the result of the game at all D. played very well in the game despite his injury 45. What was the author’s win on that day? A. He found his true passion. B. He overcame his self-doubt. C. He learnt something new from his son. D. He finally won his son’s respect. C Large gatherings such as weddings and conferences can be socially overwhelming. Pressure to learn people’s names only adds to the stress. A new facial-recognition app could come to the rescue, but privacy experts recommend proceeding with caution. The app, called SocialRecall, connects names with faces via smart phone cameras and facial recognition, potentially avoiding the need for formal introductions. “It breaks down these social barriers we all have when meeting somebody,” says Barry Sandrew, who created the app and tested it at an event attended by about 1,000 people. After receiving an invitation to download SocialRecall from an event organizer, the user is asked to take two selfies and sign in via social media. At the event, the app is active within a previously defined geographical area. When a user points his or her phone camera at an attendee’s face, the app identifies the individual, displays the person’s name, and links to his or her social media profile. To protect privacy, it recognizes only those who have agreed to participate. And the app’s creators say it automatically deletes users’ data after an event. Ann Cavoukian, a privacy expert who runs the Privacy by Design Center of Excellence praises the app’s creators for these protective measures. She cautions, however, that when people choose to share their personal information with the app, they should know that “there may be unintended consequences down the road with that information being used in another context that might come back to bite you.” The start-up has also developed a version of the app for individuals who suffer from prosopagnosia, or “face blindness”, a condition that prevents people from recognizing individuals they have met. To use this app, a person first acquires an image of someone’s face from either the smartphone’s camera or a photograph, and then tags it with a name. When the camera spots that same face in real life, the previously entered information is displayed. The collected data are stored only on a user’s phone, according to the team behind the app. 46. According to the passage, what is the main purpose of SocialRecall? A. To provide a tool for social media marketing. B. To help people remember names and faces in social settings. C. To collect and store personal information for future use. D. To assist event organizers in managing attendance. 47. Paragraph 3 is mainly about ________. A. how the app works B. how the app was created C. what makes the app popular D. what people can do with the app 48. SocialRecall helps people with prosopagnosia by________. A. giving names to the photos kept in their smartphones B. collecting information previously entered in the phone C. providing the information of a person when they first meet D. showing the person’s information when it spots a stored face 49. What can we learn about SocialRecall from the passage? A. It may put people’s privacy at risk. B. It has caused unintended consequences. C. It can prevent some communication disorders. D. It is praised by users for its protective measures. 50. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. The Future of Facial Recognition Technology B. SocialRecall: A New App for Face and Name Recognition C. Privacy Concerns in the Age of Facial Recognition D. How Technology Is Changing Social Interactions D First impressions are important, but are first impressions correct? Personally, I’m not so sure, and according to new research, neither is science. You really shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but I certainly have, and I’m willing to bet (打赌) you’ve done it, too. Consider this, though: If I’d let my opinion on, say, the boring cover of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath stop me from reading this great novel, I would have missed out on one of my favorite books to date. First impressions are important because they can influence you one way or another, but they shouldn’t be the be-all and end-all of your opinion on someone. According to Jonathan Freeman, a professor at New York University, first impressions are collected within only a few hundred milliseconds and are often based on the person’s facial appearance. “First impressions of faces can influence how we make decisions about people,” Freeman explained in a statement. Therefore, in order to put an end to such first impressions, you have to understand where your first assuṃptions (假设) come from. In order to do this, a team of researchers in Switzerland performed two experiments: The first required participants to judge the personalities of dozens of people only based on photos they were shown online. For example, in this part of the study, researchers took note of how participants related personality features like friendliness with various appearances. The second experiment explored what kind of facial features were connected with exact personality features. For example, someone who has a round face with “babyish features” might be considered as friendlier or more harmless than someone who isn’t smiley in their photo. The results showed that first impressions often aren’t all right. Look, it’s really unfortunate that first impressions aren’t always right. Still, these first impressions happen regardless of whether or not they’re right, so the best thing you can do is try to put your best foot forward without, of course, giving up your authenticity (真实性); you are exactly who you were meant to be, and all you can do is be the best person you can. 51. What does the author want to show by mentioning John Steinbeck’s novel? A. First impressions are influential. B. The cover of a book is unnecessary. C. We shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. D. Few people tend to make judgments at first-sight. 52. What can we learn from Jonathan Freeman? A. First impressions are difficult to change. B. How a person looks influences his first impression. C. It takes some time to form the first impression. D. First impressions are influenced by many factors. 53. What were the participants asked to do in the first experiment? A. Choose photos they like. B. Relate personalities with photos. C. Show their opinions of smiley faces. D. Talk about their impressions of other participants. 54. Which of the following is a finding of the research? A. People find it hard to make a good impression. B. Faces show personality features correctly. C. First impressions are not always reliable. D. One’s facial appearance is really important. 55. What’s the author’s advice according to the text? A. Don’t be too realistic. B. Try to be your best self. C. Don’t be judgmental. D. Disregard others’suggestions. An 89-year-old man has reached a goal he spent 20 years working toward. He earned his doctor degree and became a physicist. Steiner values this degree because it is what he always wanted — and because he overcame health problems that could have interfered with his studies. As a young person in Vienna, Austria, Steiner wanted to become a physicist after reading about Albert Einstein and Max Planck. But after World War Ⅱ, his mother advised him that studying medicine would be a better choice. He earned his medical degree from the University of Vienna in 1955 and moved to the United States soon after. In the U.S., he had a successful career studying blood, became a full professor and led the hematology (血液学) department at Brown’s medical school from 1985 to 1994. He helped establish a research program in hematology and directed that program until he retired from medicine in 2000. Steiner found medical research pleasing, but it was not quite the same as his interest in physics. “It was something like a wish that was never fulilled, that always stuck in the back of my head,” he said. “Once I’m finished with medicine, I really don’t want to spend my life just sitting around and maybe doing a little golfing or doing something like that. I wanted to keep active. At age 70, he started taking undergraduate classes at Brown University. He was planning to just take a few classes that interested him. But by 2007, he had earned enough credits to join the doctoral program. Physics professor Brad Marston soon realized how serious Steiner was about the subject and how hard he worked. “He already had a scientific way of thinking that younger students have to develop,” Marston said. “One thing that’s really true about Manfred is he perseveres.” After the university published a story about Steiner on its website, people across the U.S. contacted him to ask for advice on how to go after their dreams later in life. He said his advice is: Do what you love to do. 56. Why does Steiner attach great importance to this degree? (no more than 10 words) 57. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? (no more than 7 words) 58. 36. What do we know about AeroMobil’s AM Next? 40. As my heart burst with pride, I realized something. C. 【答案】51. C 52. B 53. B 54. C 55. B 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一项研究发现,我们对其他人的第一印象并不总是正确的。 【51题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段关键句“You really shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but I certainly have, and I’m willing to bet (打赌) you’ve done it, too. Consider this, though: If I’d let my opinion on, say, the boring cover of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath stop me from reading this great novel, I would have missed out on one of my favorite books to date.”(你真的不应该根据封面来评判一本书,但我确实这样做了,我敢打赌你也做过。 根据第三段内容“According to Jonathan Freeman, a professor at New York University, first impressions are collected within only a few hundred milliseconds and are often based on the person’s facial appearance.”(根据纽约大学教授乔纳森·弗里曼的说法,第一印象只在几百毫秒内收集,通常是基于人的面部表情。)可知,乔纳森·弗里曼认为第一印象通常是基于人的面部表情形成的,由此可知,我们能从乔纳森·弗里曼那里得知一个人的长相会影响他给别人留下的第一印象。故选B项。 【53题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段关键句“The first required participants to judge the personalities of dozens of people only based on photos they were shown online.”(第一个实验要求参与者仅根据网上展示的照片来判断数十人的性格。)可知,第一个实验要求参与者仅根据网上展示的照片来判断数十人的性格,由此可知,在第一个实验中,参与者被要求将个性与照片联系起来。故选B项。 【54题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段关键句“The results showed that first impressions often aren’t all right.”(研究结果表明,第一印象往往并不总是正确的。)可知,研究结果表明,第一印象往往并不总是正确的,由此可知,研究发现第一印象并不总是可靠的。故选C项。 【55题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段关键句“Still, these first impressions happen regardless of whether or not they’re right, so the best thing you can do is try to put your best foot forward without, of course, giving up your authenticity (真实性); you are exactly who you were meant to be, and all you can do is be the best person you can.”(尽管如此,这些第一印象还是会发生,不管它们是否正确,所以你能做的最好的事情就是试着在不放弃真实性的情况下迈出最好的一步;你正是你应该成为的人,你所能做的就是尽你所能成为最好的人。)可知,作者建议我们尽我们所能成为最好的人,由此可知,作者建议我们努力做最好的自己。故选B项。 第四节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 An 89-year-old man has reached a goal he spent 20 years working toward. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 5 mean? (no more than 7 words) 59. What is Marston’s comment on Steiner after he joined the doctoral program? (no more than 10 words) 60. What do you think of Steiner? Please explain. (no more than 20 words) 【答案】56. Because he longed for it and overcame serious health problems./He worked hard toward it and overcame serious health problems. /Because he earned what he wanted and overcame health problems. 57. It is about Steiner’s achievements in medicine./His achievements in medicine./What he achieved in medicine. 58. Steiner always regrets not learning physics./Not learning physics made me regretful. /Steiner felt sorry for not learning physics. /Not learning physics made Steiner feel sorry. /It means he will never forget it / his wish / his dream. /Learning physics was always Steiner’s wish/dream. /The wish wasn’t forgotten. /Steiner never forgot his wish. /Steiner kept his wish in his mind. /His dream/wish was always kept in his mind. /Learning physics was always his wish/dream. 59. Because he has a dream and has worked hard for it all his life. 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了Steiner有个想做物理学家的梦想,后来听从母亲的建议从事了医学,但退休后,这位老人经过努力拼搏,最终实现了他的梦想,成为了一名物理学家的故事。 【56题详解】 考查细节理解。根据第二段中“Steiner values this degree because it is what he always wanted — and because he overcame health problems that could have interfered with his studies.( Steiner重视这个学位,因为这是他一直想要的——而且因为他克服了可能会干扰他的学习的健康问题。)”可知,因为他渴望得到它,并克服了严重的健康问题。故答案为Because he longed for it and overcame serious health problems./He worked hard toward it and overcame serious health problems. /Because he earned what he wanted and overcame health problems. 【57题详解】 考查主旨大意。根据第四段中“In the U.S., he had a successful career studying blood, became a full professor and led the hematology (血液学) department at Brown’s medical school from 1985 to 1994. He helped establish a research program in hematology and directed that program until he retired from medicine in 2000. (在美国,他的血液研究事业非常成功,1985年至1994年,他成为布朗医学院的正教授,并领导了血液科。他帮助建立了一个血液学研究项目,并指导该项目,直到他2000年从医学退休。)”可知,本段主要是关于Steiner在医学方面取得的成就的。故答案为It is about Steiner’s achievements in medicine./His achievements in medicine./What he achieved in medicine. 【58题详解】 考查词句猜测。根据第三段“As a young person in Vienna, Austria, Steiner wanted to become a physicist after reading about Albert Einstein and Max Planck.(在奥地利维也纳,年轻的Steiner在阅读了关于Albert Einstein和Max Planck的书后,想成为一名物理学家。)”和第四段中“But after World War Ⅱ, his mother advised him that studying medicine would be a better choice. (但是在第二次世界大战Ⅱ之后,他的母亲建议他学医是一个更好的选择。)”以及划线词句前文“It was something like a wish that was never fulfilled, (这就像是一个从未实现的愿望,)”可知,Steiner梦想是做个物理学家,后来,听从母亲的建议从事了医学,但是他的梦想并没有磨灭。从而推知划线部分“that always stuck in the back of my head”意为“Steiner为没有学习物理而感到遗憾,他永远不会忘记自己想成为一名物理学家的梦想”。故答案为Steiner always regrets not learning physics./Not learning physics made me regretful. 【59题详解】 考查细节理解。根据倒数第二段中“Physics professor Brad Marston soon realized how serious Steiner was about the subject and how hard he worked. (物理学教授Brad Marston很快意识到Steiner对这门学科是多么严谨,他工作是多么努力。)”以及Marston 所说“One thing that’s really true about Manfred is he perseveres. (Manfred有一点是真的,那就是他坚持不懈。)”可知,Marston认为他态度严谨,工作努力并坚持不懈。故答案为He took the subject seriously and worked hard at it./He was serious about the subject and persevered. 【60题详解】 考查阅读表达。通读全文,尤其根据第一段“An 89-year-old man has reached a goal he spent 20 years working toward. He earned his doctor degree and became a physicist.(一位89岁的老人终于实现了他为之奋斗了20年的目标。他获得了博士学位,成为了一名物理学家。)”可知,本文主要讲述了Steiner有个想做物理学家的梦想,后来听从母亲的建议从事了医学,但退休后,这位老人最终实现了他的梦想,成为了一名物理学家的故事。故答案可以为I think he is admirable.
