New audio recordings have confirmed the presence of the pygmy blue whale—one of four subspecies of blue whale—in the waters around the Seychelles, off the east coast of Africa. The findings offer hope for these ocean giants, whose populations in the region were decimated by Soviet whalers during much of the 20th century.
The presence of the pygmy blue whale was detected via a sound-recording device placed on the seafloor by scientists (from the University of Seychelles, Florida International University and Oregon State University), which picked up its song. There have been occasional sightings in the past five years, but analysis of the recordings—taken every 15 minutes for a year—revealed that the whales were staying for months at a time and could even have babies in the region.
This becomes “big news”, according to Dillys Pouponeau, a research assistant at the Save Our Seas Foundation D’AITOS Research Centre. “It reflects the productivity of our oceans and shows how regulations (法规) have helped to protect this species.”
Commercial whaling in the seas surrounding the Seychelles caused the populations of many whale species to plummet. Realizing the need to act, the archipelago joined the International Whaling Commission in 1978, before successfully lobbying to protect the Indian Ocean from whaling. A year later, the Seychelles became part of the Indian Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
Except for the positive news, blue whales still face threats such as noise pollution and collisions with shipping traffic, while climate change is shifting the distribution and abundance of their key food — krill. “We now need to increase our research efforts to assess the abundance of these blue whales and discover why they are using Seychelles’ waters,” says Jeremy Kiszka from Florida International University. “We also need to raise awareness and help the government to protect them better.”

A.Choose the best answer (根据以下内容,选择最恰当的答案)(12分)

A. visual sightings seen by human beings B.photos and videos shot by the camera
C.songs captured by a sound-recording device D.babies found by local citizens
40.The Seychelles ________ to protect wale species.

42.Which is NOT the current challenges faced by blue whales?

The future of live music
Technology has always played an important part in the development of pop music— 45 the live shows that the bands perform to the way we listen to music in our homes or on the move. However, advances in technology over the next few years may bring even bigger changes.
Holograms
For around 50 years, people of all ages have been enjoying ABBA’s live music, but since 1982, when the band played their last show, fans have had little hope of seeing their favourite group live on stage again. That is now about to change as the band has announced plans for their first shows in nearly forty years. The four members of the band will not be on the stage together. 46 , they will appear as holograms. The holograms will show the band as they looked back to 1979, when ABBA was the biggest band around the world. And they won’t be the only band to have 47 to the stage via holograms. In 2018, Freddie Mercury appeared in hologram form alongside Queen in Las Vegas, even though he died more than 25 years ago.

C.songs captured by a sound-recording device D.babies found by local citizens
40.The Seychelles ________ to protect wale species.

A.It indicates a successful tourism campaign.

D.It is a sign of increased commercial whaling activities.

Virtual Reality (VR)
VR technology has made lots of progress recently. You may soon be able to enjoy watching your favourite band live 48 even leaving your house. Developers have been making plans to launch a new app that will allow fans to watch live concerts that are being streamed directly to VR headsets. This will allow you to watch the band from the crowd or even on stage. And all of this will cost you about a tenth of the ticket price for the venue.
These advances in technology are very 49 and promise to make live music experiences more 50 and immersive than ever before.

Anyone who has a dog as a pet will tell you why the dog is called “man’s best friend”. “They are loyal, funny and loving. They seldom complain and always o 51 their owners,” said Mary Smith of Washington D.C. Doctors will also tell you that people who have dogs seem to be happier and healthier than those who live a 52 . One reason for this is that people with dogs lead more active lives. Who can say no to a lovely dog when he pulls on your arm and asks you to take him for a walk?
Dogs are really amazing animals. They not only offer emotional support but also p 53 great help for humans. Think about guide dogs for blind people or dogs that help people in wheelchairs.
However, it is the emotional side of owning a dog that has been studied in detail by Dr Julie Davis of Chicago University. “B 54 every dog lover there is a story,” says Dr. Davis. “Why do people love their dogs so much? If you hear their stories, it’s not difficult to understand why.”
Dr. Davis has studied the r 55 between dogs and people for the last ten years. “I have spoken to people in parks, pet stores, and veterinary offices, as well as stopping people in the street. I have interviewed office workers and farmers, policemen and construction workers,” says Dr. Davis. “E 56 wants to talk about their dogs. Many people said they cried when their dogs died. They said the sadness was d 57 . People tell me all the time that they get more emotional support from their dogs than they do from their husbands or wives.”
