I am a multisport athlete and seasoned coach. When I was growing up,school wasn't really my
thing, but sport very much was.Athletics connected me to my school community by giving me a
sense of belonging and success even when I struggled in the classroom. When I entered education,I
knew I wanted to be more than a coach on the field and court-I wanted to help students like me
make meaningful connections to school through sports.
I designed a program around the concepts of comfort and stretch zones. On day one,I set up a
range of equipment for different sports across a field. In groups, students discussed sports that they
felt comfortable and safe playing. They then took turns selecting their comfort sport on the field,
doing a brief share, and playing with their group.Afterward,we had a class discussion on the im-
portance of doing things that bring joy and passion, and how sharing that passion with others moti-
vates us and the people around us.
On day two, with the same field design and sporting equipment,I introduced the idea of stretch
zones.Students formed the same groups as on day one and discussed which sports were out of their
comfort zone and more challenging to them. Some of my students were shy and others slightly frus-
trated (as they struggled to perform the skills in sports in which they were not comfortable.
Then we discussed,as a class, how even when something is challenging,if we recognize the difficul-
ty and intentionally practice,we give ourselves the opportunity to overcome it over time.
The program required more than just adjusting my curriculum ()-it also meant some
changes to the way I taught.I found myself opening up to my students and sharing my own hard-
ships and successes with them.As a result,my students felt freer to be their real selves.
4.What did the author think of sport when he was a student?
A.It appealed mainly to seniors.
B.It led to a decline in his grades.
C.It helped him get attached to school.
D.It made him struggle in the classroom.
5.Why did the author design the program?
A.To test some sports equipment.
B.To prepare students for a meet.
C.To push students to observe rules.
D.To bond students and the school.
6.What was a problem facing the author on the second day of the program?
A.Some students feared challenges.
B.It was difficult to group students.
C.Students wanted material rewards.
D.The sports field became crowded.
7.What can we infer about the author?
A.He loves telling jokes.
B.He is a creative teacher.
C.He used to be very shy.
D.He is fond of safe sports.

Pick up any packaged processed food, and there's a decent chance that one of its listed ingredi-
ents will be "natural flavor".The ingredient sounds good, particularly in contrast to "artificial fla-
vor”.But what exactly does natural flavor mean?It refers to extracts(提取物)got from natural
一122
sources like plants, meat or seafood. When consumers see "natural flavor"on a label, they are un-
likely to assume that someone is squeezing the juice from oranges into their bottle. They know even
though natural flavor must come from natural sources,it needn't all come from the plant or meat.
For example, orange flavor might contain not only orange extract, but also extracts from bark and
grass.Nor is the common belief true that ingredients extracted from nature are necessarily safer
than something artificially made.
So if flavors like orange are needed, why not just use oranges? The answer comes down to
"availability, cost and sustainability",according to flavor chemist Gary Reineccius of the University
of Minnesota."If you're going to use all your grapes on grape soda,"Reineccius says."you don't
have any grapes for wine making:the products are going to be exorbitant:besides, what do you do
with the by-products you create after you've squeezed all the juice out of the grape?"
Actually, while chemists make natural flavors by extracting chemicals from natural ingredients.
artificial flavors are made by creating the same chemicals artificially. The reason why companies
bother to use natural flavors rather than artificial flavors is simple:marketing."Many of these
products have health titles,"says Platkin, professor from Hunter College."Consumers may be
talked to believe products with natural flavors are healthier, though they're nutritionally no different
from those with artificial flavors.Natural flavors may involve more forest clear-cutting and carbon
emissions from transport than flavors created in the lab.
Platkin suggests getting more transparent labeling on packaging that describes exactly what the
natural or artificial flavors are,so consumers are not misled into buying one product over another
because of "natural flavors".Reineccius also offers some simple guidance:"Don't buy anything be-
cause it says 'natural flavors'.Buy it because you like it.
8.Which is a misunderstanding about the "natural flavor"juice according to Paragraph 1?
A.It comes from 100%original fruit.
B.It is nothing but advertising tricks.
C.It certainly contains extracts made in the lab.
D.It is absolutely safer than juice with artificial flavors.
9.What does the underlined word "exorbitant"in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Popular.
B.Expensive.
C.Durable.
D.Innovative.
10.Why do companies use natural flavors in their products?
A.To cut the costs.
B.To promote the sales.
C.To advocate a healthy diet.
D.To avoid food safety issues.
11.What can we conclude from the text?
A.Gary and Platkin hold opposite perspectives.
B.Natural flavors are more environmentally-friendly.
C.Customers are misled for ignoring labels on packaging.
D.Natural and artificial flavors are more alike than you think.

Chinese researchers have taken a bite-sized step toward the future of food with the development
of "chicken rice"and "pork rice"-innovative dishes combining cell-cultured meat and staple grains.
The breakthrough, led by the China Meat Food Comprehensive Research Center and the Beijing
Academy of Food Sciences, involves cultivating chicken and pork cells directly on rice and other
crops.
"These dishes appear just like regular rice varieties-white,brown or purple,"explained
Wang Shouwei, the chief scientist behind the project."But after cooking, they take on the aroma of
both rice and meat..”
Beyond taste, the technology offers exciting nutritional possibilities."We can precisely control
the content of protein.amino acids, fiber, carbs and other nutrients,"Wang said."This allows us
to tailor these foods to specific dietary needs."
The key innovation lies in using rice as a "microcarrier scaffold".Traditionally,cell-cultured
meat production relies on expensive, synthetic carriers.
"These carriers often raise food safety concerns and inflate production costs,"Wang said.
"Rice.on the other hand,provides a natural,edible alternative,rich in fiber and other beneficial
nutrients..”
The process involves pre-treating rice varieties to create a suitable environment for cell growth.
For instance."pork rice"is produced by cultivating separate batches of pork muscle and fat cells on
modified rice grains. These are then combined to create the final product.
Professor Zhou Jingwen, from Jiangnan University, sees the development as a significant leap
forward.
"Chicken rice and pork rice represent a new frontier in cell-cultured meat research, and China is
poised to be a leader in this field,he said.
The research team is optimistic about achieving mass production in the near future.
Fitness coach Yao Xiangwei is intrigued by the potential."High protein.high fiber and healthy
carbs-that sounds perfect for people like me,"he said."Price will be a factor,but I'd definitely
try it.
However,Yao acknowledges the need for public acceptance."As a new concept, people will
likely be curious but cautious,"he said."It might take some time for these'cultivated'dishes to be-
come mainstream."
12.What is the main focus of the Chinese researchers'recent development in the food industry?
A.Creating a new type of rice grain.
B.Developing cell-cultured meat dishes combined with rice.
C.Enhancing traditional Chinese dishes with modern technology.
D.Cultivating synthetic carriers for cell-cultured meat.
13.How does using rice as a"microcarrier scaffold"benefit the production of cell-cultured meat?
A.It significantly reduces the nutritional value of the meat.
B.It offers a natural, edible alternative to synthetic carriers.
C.It complicates the process of cell growth on the rice.
D.It increases the production costs due to the special treatment required.
124
14.According to Professor Zhou Jingwen, what does the development of "chicken rice"and "pork
rice"signify for China in the field of cell-cultured meat research?
A.It indicates a decline in traditional meat consumption.
B.It marks China's position as a leader in this emerging field.
C.It suggests that China will import more meat from abroad.
D.It shows that China is lagging behind in food technology advancements.
15.What concern does fitness coach Yao Xiangwei mention regarding the potential success of cell-
cultured meat dishes?
A.The dishes may not contain enough protein for athletes.
B.The public may be hesitant to accept these new food concepts.
C.The production process is too complex to be replicated widely.
D.The price of the dishes will be too low to attract high-end consumers.

Are you frequently depressed by the feeling that life is leaving you behind particularly when you
look over social media sites and are faced with all the exciting things your friends are up to?16
FOMO.or Fear of Missing Out refers to the perception that other people's lives are superior to
our own.It appears as a deep sense of envy, and constant exposure to it can have a weakening effect
on our self-esteem(自尊).
While feelings of envy and lack of confidence seem to be human nature, social media seems to
have added fuel to the fire.17 Social media, with its built-in appeal, allows us to share only the
best presentations of our life, while leaving out the more boring aspects.Although this could be
characterized as dishonest,it is the atmosphere social media seems to demand. So how do we avoid
being trapped into our own insecurities by social media?
Consider your own social media posts.18 Well,so have others. And what they've left hid-
den is the fact that boredom, loneliness and unpleasant chores are an unavoidable part of everyone's
life, and you're not the only one feeling left out.
19 You may not be a regular at fancy parties or a climber of dizzying peaks, but you have
your health,a place to live and real friends who appreciate your presence in their lives.
Learn to shake it off.We are all flooded daily with photos of other people's perfections, but re-
ally, what does it matter?20 And even if you are more easily affected than others by social
media envy, all you need to do is to look around you and acknowledge that you are doing pretty well
after all.
A.If so,you are not alone.
B.Value your friends in real life.
C.Learn to appreciate the positives.
D.Why does it have such a stimulating effect?
E.They are probably no more real than the funniest reality TV show.
F.The feeling that we are left out has long-term damaging psychological consequences.
G.Have you ever chosen photos that lead others to the rosiest conclusions about your life?

The very first speech I had given changed my life more than I could ever have imagined.I was
a third-grader when I chose Susan B.Anthony to be the topic.When I got the assignment,I went to
the library and began researching the Women's Fight for the Right to Vote.I never really thought
about a time when women had no voting rights and that their opinions didn't count.I learned that
Susan B.Anthony led the fight to give women a say in our society. She overcame a lot of obstacles in
order to do that.
About a week after giving my school speech,my mom read a newspaper article about a statue
honoring Susan B.Anthony.The problem was that few people ever got to see the statue. It was
dedicated (in 1921,but within twenty-four hours it was taken down to the basement and
stored where it had remained for nearly eighty years.
When I read that article,I was getting angry! This statue belonged in a place of honor.I felt
that it should be in the Rotunda, along with the statues of Abraham Lincoln,Martin Luther King.
and Gcorge Washington.
The article asked for donations because it would take 74,000 to move the thirteen-ton statue
out of the basement.I decided to write a letter with a self-addressed envelope asking my relatives
and friends to send a Susan B.Anthony coin or a 1 bill to me to contribute to the Women's Voting
Statue Campaign.Every day I ran to the mailbox after school. But a month later,my piggy bank
was still far from full.
So every night, after my homework,I wrote more letters at the kitchen table.Pretty soon the
whole family got involved in the project. My seven-year-old brother,David, prepared stamps and
envelopes. My mother and grandmother found addresses for people I wanted to contact and my dad
drove me around and gave me tons of encouragement when I spoke to big groups.
