During the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, athletes from all over the world broke both personal and Olympic records. High-tech elements have been giving “wings” to these hard-working athletes, helping them become “faster, higher, stronger”.
The National Speed Skating Oval (the Ice Ribbon) saw 12 new Olympic records and one world record, including Chinese speed skater Gao Tingyu’s Olympic record of 34.32 seconds in the men’s 500 meters.
Known as “the fastest ice”, the 12,000-square-meter rink has received very good feedback from the athletes. “It makes everyone skate faster,” Gao Tingyu said after he bagged the gold.
The secret behind is a new carbon dioxide ice-making technology. Speed-skating requires a very flat ice surface. If the ice surface temperature doesn’t change much, the ice stays flatter. Flat ice is easier to skate on. Liquid carbon dioxide was put under the ice for the first time. It cooled the ice and kept the temperature changes on the surface within just half of one degree.
In events like freestyle skiing and ski jumping, the direction and speed of the wind could largely affect athletes’ performance. A research team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences developed a wind measuring system using AI technology. “Some events only last a few seconds, and the wind is changing all the time. This system allows athletes and coaches to ‘see’ wind directly through real-time data on their pads, and decide when and where to jump,” the team leader Shao Yun told Beijing Daily.
There are many more high-tech elements that boost athletic performance, including drag-reducing sportswear, smart beds that massage athletes, and robots that cook. All these helped keep China’s promise to hold an “athlete-centered” Olympics, said Zhao Weidong, the spokesperson of the Beijing organizing committee.

① During the Tang Dynasty (618-907), Emperor Taizong asked the prime minister Feng Deyi to recommend talented people. However, several months passed, Feng didn’t recommend anyone.
②“I tried my best, but there are not unusual and well-rounded people at all,” Feng said.
③“People are like utensils (器物). What we need to do is to make good use of their strengths. You should blame yourself for not noticing talented people. How could you say that there are no talented people in our era?” said the emperor.
④Indeed, each utensil or tool has a specific function. A knife is made to cut things while chopsticks are made to pick up food. We can’t use a knife as a chopstick. Like a utensil, each person has a particular strength. Nobody is perfect. We can’t expect a person to be good at everything.
⑤With this idea in mind, Emperor Taizong discovered many talented people of different backgrounds. He offered them important positions, which helped them make the most of their talents. His talented people helped the society develop and created a “golden age”.
⑥A good example is Ma Zhou, who grew up in a poor family. Ma gave a lot of useful advice, so Emperor Taizong offered him a position and promoted him many times. Ma helped the emperor deal with complicated issues and became a well-known person in history.
⑦ If a person is talented in one aspect, we should give them a chance. The same idea can be found in the Analects of Confucius(《论语》). Treating people as utensils shows not only good leadership, but a sincere and inclusive attitude. President Xi Jinping once told this story to officials, asking them to value talented people.
⑧Today, as the division of labor in society is becoming clearer, the idea still makes sense. If we become leaders someday, we should help others give full play to their strengths. For example, Liu Bang, the founder of Han Dynasty(206BC-AD220), let Zhang Liang and Xiao He work as advisors for their wisdom while inviting Han Xin to lead the army for his war strategies. Known as the “three heroes of the early Han Dynasty”, they helped Liu build a strong dynasty.
41. Why couldn’t Feng Deyi find any talented people in Taizong’s opinion?
A. There were no talented people then.
B. His standards were wrong.
C. He was afraid of being replaced.
D. He was dissatisfied with the emperor.
42. Knives and chopsticks are compared to ______ .
A. positions B. strengths C. tools D. people
43. Ma Zhou is a good example of people who ______ .
A. have no talent but are still useful
B. are unusual and well-rounded
C. know when to take a chance
D. show talent in the right field
44. What is the main idea of paragraph 7?
A. People with any talent should be valued.
B. Talented people are difficult to discover.
C. Using people as tools is taking advantage of them.
D. Using people as tools doesn’t work today.
45. What is the main message of the story?
A. Opportunity only comes to those who are prepared.
B. There is no such thing as a great talent without great willpower.
C. Talented people should be valued and led to the right place.
D. Pearls are everywhere but not the same as eyes.

On Feb 24, Russia announced a “special military operation” in eastern Ukraine. This marked the beginning of a major conflict between the two countries.
According to the Washington Post, the tension involves issues with land borders and strategic influence. Along the Russian border in Eastern Europe sits Ukraine. Because of its geographical position and natural resources, many conflicts have happened in this area.
Ukraine was a part of the Soviet Union until 1991, when it became independent. Over the years, Ukraine has been forming closer ties with the European Union. Besides, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO ) has shown its intention to get Ukraine involved for a long time, but this is crossing a red line for Russia, noted CNN. Historically, Russia has not gotten on with countries that are a part of NATO, such as the US and the UK. If Ukraine joins NATO, the US and NATO will have too much power in an area next to its borders, said the BBC.
The United Nations said on May 4 that more than 11 million people have fled their homes since the conflict began in February, with around 5.3million having left the country altogether. It’s Europe’s biggest refugee crisis since World War II, said the UN Refugee Agency.
This conflict affects more than just Russia and Ukraine. Some Western countries have put sanctions(制裁) on Russia. This means that they will not import some Russian goods or resources, like coal and gas. Russia supplies about one-third of Europe’s gas needs, said the BBC.This has left countries in Europe with rising energy costs. And rising costs will affect the poor the most, said CGTN. In the long-term, the European Union plans to rely less on Russian energy. They plan to cut their use of Russian gas by two-thirds by the end of this year, reported the Tony Blair Institute.
The world’s food supply has been affected, too. Russia and Ukraine together make up about 30 percent of world exports of wheat and more than half of the world’s exports of sunflower oil. World food supply has already been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate crisis. And now, there are sanctions on Russia, and Ukraine is unable to get its food exported out normally. The conflict is driving international food prices to a “new all-time high”, said the UN.
46. What led to Russia’s military operation in Ukraine?
A. Ukraine became independent from Russia.
B. Ukraine didn’t allow Russia to buy its resources.
C. Ukraine started a fight along the Russian border.
D. Ukraine wanted to tie more closely with NATO.
47. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. The conflict has displaced many people.
B. Ukraine’s efforts to protect its people.
C. How the United Nations has helped refugees.
D. Countries around Ukraine are safe.
48. What happened to gas prices in European countries after the sanctions on Russia?
A. They went up. B. They went down.
C. They didn’t change. D. They went up and then down.
49. What can we infer from Paragraph 5?
A. The EU will not use Russian gas in the future.
B. The EU also suffers from the sanctions on Russia.
C. Russia cut off the gas supply to the EU.
D. Russia relies on the EU for many things.
50. Paragraph 6 stresses the war’s influence on ______ .
A. the COVID-19 pandemic B. the Russian economy
C. the trade of food resources D. the Ukrainian people

Studies show teaching children how to cook at an early age helps with reading comprehension and fine motor ability, in addition to learning about nutrition and food safety. In 2015 Stephanie Drewry was looking for a cooking summer camp for her three children. To her dismay, she quickly realized such a camp didn’t exist.
“I have my degree in education, but I had been staying home with my kids, ” Drewry says. “I love working with kids, so I just decided to take a spare bedroom and turn it into a one-room cooking school called Sprouts Cooking School. ”
The school grew in popularity so quickly that Drewry realized she would need more space outside her home for the classes. In 2017 she moved Sprouts into a 1,400-square-foot storefront (临街店面) in Carmel, Indiana. As demand grew, Drewry opened another Sprouts in the same area in 2022.
“Our classrooms are built with kids in mind. The worktops (操作台) in the classrooms are slightly lower than normal to fit in with their height,” Drewry says. “All of the cooking facilities are domestic ones. I wanted to have them feel like cooking in their own home.”
The school offers activities targeted at kids aged 3 to 13. Younger kids might make cookies while older ones are cooking soup and meatballs. There are birthday parties and summer camps as well. The fun part of the activities is that the kids can eat or take home whatever they make. They can also enjoy themselves in the themed classes like Harry Potter or Winter Wonder-land Baking. With all these activities, the school is extremely popular.
Teaching kids, especially those picky eaters, to cook helps a lot because they’re more willing to eat something made by themselves. More importantly, it is also about releasing children into the world with a life skill they’ll need as an adult when they’re no longer in their parents’ care.

In the 1980s, when I was a senior in high school, I was passionate about baseball. However, my poor health ___16___ me from participating in such sports. Instead, I could only take part in the sports by ___17___ as the statistician, a role that allowed me to stay close to the sport I loved. My job was to examine various statistics connected with baseball and to provide ___18___ to the coach. Though I wasn’t on the field, I found joy in studying the numbers behind the game.
One season, our team struggled badly, losing several games ___19___ . I carefully analysed each player’s ___20___ , focusing on their batting averages, fielding percentages, and other key statistics. Convinced that a change in the line-up (阵容) would be ___21___ , I approached the coach to suggest ___22___ line-ups. Initially, my ideas were met with skepticism. The coach, like many, preferred to ___23___ his experience over the numbers.
However, following our team’s seventh ___24___ , he finally agreed to let me try my hand at ____25____ the line-up. I re-examined the statistics from a fresh perspective and proposed a few minor but crucial ____26____ . To everyone’s surprise, the team showed ____27____ almost immediately. The new line-up made the team play to its ____28____ , and all of the players felt more inspired. Over the next few games, we continued to refine the line-up, and the ____29____ behind these changes kept everyone engaged and focused. ____30____, we were leading with a score of 4-2 and, against all odds, won the championship. This victory was sweet, not just because of the trophy, but because it ____31____ the power of statistics in sports.
Looking back, I realise that even though I couldn’t play on the field, my efforts as a statistician were just as valuable. My basic ____32____ of statistics played an important role in our success, which earned me a school award and further ____33____ my love for the subject. It was a turning point that led me to ____34____ a major in statistics in college. This experience taught me that even from the sidelines (场外), one can make a meaningful impact with the right knowledge and a bit of courage to ____35____ the way things have always been done. It was then that I discovered the power of data and the impact of creative problem-solving — a lesson that has shaped my journey ever since.

36. Gao Tianyu set a record for ______ .
A. winning the first gold for China in men’s 500 meters
B. skating the fastest speed in men’s 500 meters
C. being the youngest skater at the Olympics
D. designing the National Speed Skating Oval
37. The underlined “it” in Paragraph 3 refers to ______ .
A. the ice rink B. the gold medal
C. the record D. the feedback
38. Liquid carbon dioxide was put under the ice to ______ .
A. make the ice harder B. keep the ice cold
C. save water resources D. change the temperature of the ice
39. The system from the Chinese Academy of Sciences helps athletes ______ .
A. change the direction of the wind
B. record their jumps in real time
C. measure wind more accurately
D. reduce off-site influence factors
40. What do we know from the words of Zhao Weidong?
A. China is expected to hold another Winter Olympics soon.
B. Other countries look at China with new eyes.
C. The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics were the best ever.
D. The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics were people-centered.

细节理解题。根据文章第二段“The National Speed Skating Oval (the Ice Ribbon) saw 12 new Olympic records and one world record, including Chinese speed skater Gao Tingyu’s Olympic record of 34.32seconds in the men’s 500 meters.(国家速滑馆(“冰丝带”)见证了12项新的奥运会纪录和1项世界纪录,其中包括中国速滑选手高亭宇在男子500米比赛中以34.32秒创造的奥运会纪录)”以及第三段““It makes everyone skate faster,” Gao Tingyu said after he bagged the gold.(“它让每个人都滑得更快了。”高亭宇在夺得金牌后说道)”可知,高亭宇在男子500米比赛中创造了34.32秒的奥运会纪录,即他在男子500米比赛中滑出了最快的速度,创造了纪录。故选B。
【37题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线单词上文以及所在句“Known as “the fastest ice”, the 12,000-square-meter rink has received very good feedback from the athletes. “It makes everyone skate faster,” Gao Tingyu said after he bagged the gold.(这座面积达1.2万平方米的冰场被誉为“最快的冰”,并得到了运动员们的高度评价。“它让每个人都滑得更快了。”高亭宇在夺得金牌后说道)”可知,“it”前面提到了被称为“最快的冰”的12000平方米的冰场得到了运动员们很好的反馈,后面高亭宇说“它让每个人都滑得更快”,因此这里的“it”指代的就是前面提到的“the 12,000-square-meter rink(冰场)”。故选A。
【38题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Liquid carbon dioxide was put under the ice for the first time. It cooled the ice and kept the temperature changes on the surface within just half of one degree.

B
【答案】41. B 42. D 43. D 44. A 45. C

C Russia cut off the gas supply to the EU.
D. Russia relies on the EU for many things.
50. Paragraph 6 stresses the war’s influence on ______ .
A the COVID-19 pandemic B. the Russian economy
C. the trade of food resources D. the Ukrainian people
【答案】46. D 47. A 48. A 49. B 50. C

阅读表达
