Dear Mom,
The big question which shocked parents often ask their child after a confrontational (对抗的) moment is, “Where did you get this attitude from?” I know you hate to admit it, but I get much of my determined and strongwilled nature from you.
Mom, I know it's hard dealing with the teenage anxiety and the everchanging moods that come with raising a child. But you should also marvel at the fact that I've made it this far, that I'm healthy and happy.
When I was small, I would attend barbecues and family events and wander away from my parents. It wouldn't be long before someone would stop me to ask whether I was my mother's daughter.
“Your mom is Melissa,” they'd say, a warm smile on their faces. “Is that right?” I would nod. I think parents feel much hurt when their child talks back or defies them, I was shocked at this statement. To me, I acted nothing like you, Mom.
No one says, “I know you're Melissa's daughter because of your eyes and nose.” It's the character traits (特点) that seal the deal. Dry wit, intelligence, and yes, maybe a little bit of attitude—these are the things I am grateful I have received from you. There's nothing wrong with having attitude.
Like for most black individuals, attitude is what defines you and me, and it's what keeps us from being mentally oppressed and defeated. Attitude is a nonviolent form of protection and confrontation—where would we be in the world without this tool? Surely not where we are.
Mom, when people ask me where I get my attitude from, I tell them: you. And when they ask me where I got my drive, my work ethic, my good hair, and my sense of humor, I say you as well. I will always say this.
When I'm asked why I am the way I am, why I refuse to allow others to hurt me with their words or actions and why I think and speak about things openly and without fear, I'll tell them it's because of you.
I'll complain to you about the arguments between us that leave me wondering about how God made us so much alike that we hardly even noticed. But I'll tell them about you.
Love,
Malahni

“He was a nightmare (噩梦),” his mother, Mary said as I talked with her and her son Jamie. “I was sure he was going to end up in prison, or worse.” Seeing Jamie so full of life with his new friends, there was no room for imagination that he was ever a rebellious (叛逆的) kid.
Jamie was raised by his mother after his father left ten years ago. They lived in a small flat with little money. Most of their neighbors were alcoholics, so crime was very common. At middle school, he quickly got in with the__wrong__crowd and began to steal everything from shoes to phones.
Mary didn't realize the consequence of the trouble Jamie made until he told her he had been stopped from going to school for three weeks. Mary was very angry, but now she has realized that it was the best thing that had happened to both of them.
During the three weeks, Mary made him volunteer at the local community centre where he saw the street dancers for the first time. “They were so cool and able to express themselves in a way I had never seen before. I asked to join them and they agreed. Because of them I am who I am now.” Jamie told me, tears in his eyes.
Back at school, his whole attitude and behavior improved. “I realized the boys I was hanging out with weren't cool, stealing wasn't cool and getting out of school wasn't cool either. It made me find something I love and have a goal in life.” he said.
Yes, street dance makes him happy. This kind of dance speaks to people, and gives them a purpose.

A famous saying goes: Don't judge a book by its cover. __1__. This is what the Love My Body movement is all about. Its message is that we should value ourselves for who we are.
But it's easier said than done. Many people still don't feel confident in themselves and their appearance. __2__?
Not comparing your body to others' is a good first step. An expert points out that comparing only forms a standard (标准) we think we need to reach, and if we fail, it will lead to our feelings of disappointment.
__3__. When someone says something nice, accept it happily—don't push it away or play it down. And praise others too. If you think someone looks nice, or someone has a good idea, tell them. It can lift them up.
__4__—walking, yoga, playing sport or otherwise. “You can be a great human without thinking about your shape or size,” says Esther Field, another famous expert. “After knee operation, I attended the gym and realized how strong and able my body was, even though it was fat. So thank it very much.”
Finally, the only person who can truly affect your body positivity is you. __5__, but don't give up, you will succeed sooner or later. Remember that everyone is short of confidence sometimes. And as David Fadd says “don't feel sorry for who you are and what you want as a person. Love what you look like.”

A lecture hall should be like a church—a little too dark, much too cold, and uncomfortably silent. You should feel guilty opening your water bottle, because all 200 people in the room can hear it.
So when I'm trying to pay attention, the last thing you should be doing is carrying on a conversation about your last weekend party or anything else.
During the past school term, I've had enough. One of my biggest complaints of large class sizes is the tendency for three to five friends to sit together and loudly whisper each others' ears off for an hour and 15 minutes straight. My stupid monkey brain can't help but focus on your conversation about the difference between ash blonde and light blonde colored hair that look exactly the same.
To me, it just feels like a waste. You're actively wasting money, and missing vital information. We (and the government) pay quite a lot for our education, but you are here to ignore someone significantly more experienced than us, in classes we picked, for hours every week.
I know major requirements can be boring, but this is still an education. It requires twoway effort. Most of students here have at least one goal in common: success. Not every checkpoint on that path is going to be filled with joy. Sit down, shut up, and force yourself to listen to your professor. Society tells us it will eventually pay off.
Or maybe it won't because you don't want to.
I actually don't care if you decide to pay little or no attention to the lecture itself, so long as you're not being disturbing.
For those willing to try, in 20 years when you finally pay off your debt with your fairly secure whitecollar job, you'll look back and be happy that you went through the lectures.
1.Why is a lecture hall compared to a church by the author?
A.Both places are open to the public.
B.Both places are supposed to be quiet.
C.Both places can seat over 200 people.
D.Both places help rid people of their guilt.
2.What can we infer about the author from the passage?
A.He likes persuading others.
B.He tends to make complaints.
C.He values education as a duty.
D.He cares much about friendship.
3.How does the author feel when writing the passage?
A.Annoyed. B.Deserted.
C.Thrilled. D.Worried.
故选A。
4.What may be the best title for the text?
A.Hard Work Pays Off!
B.Focus on the Lectures!
C.Wasting Your Time Is a Shame!
D.Mind Your InClass Behavior!

Lill was a shy, young French Canadian girl who grew up in a village. At the age of 16, her father forced her to drop out of school and find a job to help the family.
In 1992, with poor education, skills and hope, the young girl would take the bus into the big cities of Windsor and Detroit, walk aimlessly about and then return home every day. She couldn't even bring herself to knock on a door.
As the days passed, Lill knew she had to have the courage to knock on a door. On one of her trips, Lill saw a sign at Carhartt Overall Company, saying, “Help Wanted, Secretary. Apply Within.” She walked up to the office and was met by the office manager Margaret, who sat her down at a typewriter and said with a smile, “Let's see how good you really are.”
She directed Lill to type a single letter and then left. Lill looked at the clock: 11:40 am. She figured that she could run away in the crowd when the clock struck 12. But she knew she should at least stay and give it a try.
On her first try, she got through one line. It had five words and she made four mistakes. She pulled the paper out and threw it away. The clock read 11:45. “In fifteen minutes,” she said to herself, “I'll escape from the company, and she will never see me again.” On her second try, Lill got through a full paragraph, but still made many mistakes. Again she pulled out the paper, threw it out and started over. This time she completed the whole letter, but still there were many errors in it. She looked at the clock: 11:55—five minutes to freedom.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Just then, the door at one end of the office opened and Margaret walked in.
Lill did stay at Carhartt Overall Company for 51 years,
Just then, the door at one end of the office opened and Margaret walked in. She came directly over to Lill, putting one hand on the desk and the other on the girl's shoulder. She read the letter and paused. Then she said, “Lill, you're doing good work!” Lill was stunned. She looked at the letter, then up at Margaret. With those simple words of encouragement, her desire to escape vanished and her confidence began to grow. She thought, “Well, if she thinks it's good, then it must be good. I think I'll stay!”
Lill did stay at Carhartt Overall Company for 51 years, through two world wars and a Depression, through eleven presidents and six prime ministers—all because someone had the insight to give a shy and uncertain young girl the gift of selfesteem when she knocked on the door.
