Have you heard of the Golden Rule? The great Chinese philosopher Confucius taught this principle. It is a very important and wellknown idea. He encouraged many values like children respecting elders, people respecting their ancestors, and wives respecting husbands. He desired for these moral principles in people's lives and in the government of the country. He believed that people should develop their own personal rules instead of simply memorizing rules of behavior to follow. He also had a thoughtful way of teaching. Instead of presenting his ideas through arguments and reasoning, he taught his rules through personal examples. He himself studied hard and sought truth, dreams and a perfect personality. 第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths.
It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend (超越) it. Once we truly know that life is difficult—once we truly understand and accept it—then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.
Most do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that difficulties mean a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation.
What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness, or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.
Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious test that tells us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, those things that hurt, instruct. It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.

Christa Barfield of Germantown starts each day by drinking a cup of hot tea. When she lifts the cup to her lips, she smells the tea gently and looks forward to the day ahead. “Drinking a cup of tea is a form of selfreflection,” Barfield said. “When I'm doing my praying or meditation (冥想), drinking tea allows me to sit in the moment and be present.”
Barfield, 32, fell in love with tea in 2018 after taking a trip to the Caribbean Island of Martinique where every morning with her breakfast she was served a hot cup from the couple she visited. There, the host would take live herbs from his garden, put them in a cup, and pour hot water over them. “It was very different from what we do in America,” Barfield said. “The tea had a fresher taste.”
When she returned to Germantown, she was inspired to start a tea company of her own. In August, she started Viva Leaf Tea, a company that sells blended (调配的) teas from herbs and plants that Barfield grows from seed. The name of the company, Viva Leaf Tea, is a nod to the fresh herbal teas she drank in Martinique.
“I started a tea company for wellness reasons,” Barfield explained. “It helped me to keep my 10 years of healthcare experiences and reuse them in my own way.” Before starting Viva Leaf Tea, Barfield worked in healthcare management at several private practices in Philadelphia. In 2018, she earned a bachelor's degree in healthcare administration from Saint Joseph's University.
“We take all of our herbs very seriously,” she said. “There are thousands of tea companies all over the world. But you don't really know where the tea leaves come from.” Barfield provides a “farm to cup” experience for her customers. With every order, customers are provided with information about the origins of the herbs used and their possible health benefits.

Sometimes life can seem challenging (挑战的) and we usually get the feeling of “the grass on the other side is always greener”! We usually feel upset with the troubles that life throws at us.
The best thing to do at that point of time is to close our eyes and start counting of all the blessings in life that God has given us.
If we think deeply, our life is full of blessings that we hardly recognize. Listening to the singing of birds early in the morning, we realize that there are many people who spend their life in a world that is silent while many others spend their lives in a world that is dark and may have never seen a rainbow or the setting sun.
When you go out for a drive, pull down the window and look at the poor beggar standing under the hot sun, begging for filling his hungry stomach. We get three meals a day without realizing its importance. Isn't that a blessing?
Whenever you are sad, look at the eyes of your parents and family filled with love and concern for you. There are many people who have never experienced the love of a family. Isn't that a blessing?
As Mother Teresa once said, “We don't need to do great things. We need to do small things with great love”.
The key to a happy life is when we consider others problems to be our own and try to help them. When we love people without any expectations and help them, our heart is filled with a sense of happiness and peace seeing the smile on their face.
So the next time whenever life knocks you down, close your eyes and ... start counting!

A friend of mine, in response to a conversation we were having about the injustices of life, asked me the question, “Who said life was going to be fair, or that it was even meant to be fair?” Her question was a good one. It reminded me of something I was taught as a youngster: life isn't fair. It's a disappointment, but it's absolutely true. One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves, or for others, thinking that life should be fair, or that someday it will be. It's not and it won't be.
One of the nice things about surrendering (屈从) to the fact that life isn't fair is that it keeps us from feeling sorry for ourselves by encouraging us to do the very best we can with what we have. We know it's not “life's job” to make everything perfect, it's our own challenge. Surrendering to this fact also keeps us from feeling sorry for others because we are reminded that everyone is dealt in different hand; everyone has unique strengths and problems in the process of growing up, facing the reality and making decisions; and everyone has those times that they feel unfairly treated.
The fact that life isn't fair doesn't mean we shouldn't do everything in our power to improve our own lives or the world as a whole. To the contrary, it suggests that we should. When we don't recognize or admit that life isn't fair, we tend to feel pity for others and for ourselves. Pity, of course, is a selfdefeating emotion that does nothing for anyone, except to make everyone feel worse than they already do. When we do recognize that life isn't fair, however, we feel sympathy for others and for ourselves. And sympathy is a heartfelt emotion that delivers lovingkindness to everyone it touches. The next time you find yourself thinking about the injustices of the world, try reminding yourself of this very basic fact. You may be surprised that it can make you out of selfpity and into helpful action.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Offered praise needs to be genuine or it will not have its desired effect of rewarding. __36__ Parents can avoid offering empty praise by attending to and praising children's specific skills, positive attitudes, and desirable physical attributes (特性) that parents wish to reward.
It is important that parents praise children more for their effort than for their success. However, working parents live in a competitive world where they are mostly rewarded only for their success. __37__ There are several reasons why this is a bad idea. By choosing and praising only successful outcomes, parents communicate to their children that their praise is conditional, and that children will only receive love if they “win”. As a result, children will feel less secure in parental love. That's to say, children will possibly experience anxiety and other emotional problems. __38__
__39__ Here is an example: Jamie's mother notes that Jamie got a C (an average grade) on her math test this week. Instead of criticizing her daughter for not getting higher marks, she says instead, “Jamie, I'm so impressed with how hard you studied for that test this week. I saw you reading every night this week.”
Even though Jamie may not have gotten an “A” or a “B” on the test, her efforts towards studying are a vital foundation for her future success at math. Through her comment, Mom reinforced in Jamie's mind that her parents are aware of and approve of her effort. __40__
Effectively used, praise should highlight positive things children do or the way children use the qualities or attributes they possess. Most importantly, praise should focus on children's effort and perseverance. Practice makes perfect.
A.How does an empty praise do harm to parenting?
B.What does offering praise for effort look and sound like?
C.Many kids will know when parents' praise is empty.
D.This makes it more likely that Jamie will be willing to study in the future.
E.The problems may result in less effort, and reduce their overall ability to succeed.
F.A good basic rule is to make sure that parents offer a lot more praise and encouragement than correction.
G.It is thus easier for parents to notice and praise the successful outcome of children's effort rather than their effort itself.

Dear Alice,
I learned that you haven't got used to the life here, especially the dormitory life. But a harmonious dormitory is important for students and benefits all of us. In a harmonious atmosphere, we can rest well and pay our attention to studies.
There are several ways to get on well with others and create the harmonious atmosphere. First, you have to form good habits, such as going to bed and getting up on time. Second, when there's an annoying situation in the dormitory, but you can't do anything about it, you should learn to tolerate. Third, try communicating more with others and learn to share.
I believe you'll get used to the dormitory life and start enjoying it soon.
Yours,
Li Juan
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
“Learning a language is easy. Even a child can do it!” Most adults who are learning a second language would disagree with this statement. For them, learning a language is a very difficult task. They need hundreds of hours of study and practice, and even this will not guarantee success for every adult learner.
Language learning is different from other kinds of learning. Some people who are very intelligent and successful in their fields find it difficult to succeed in language learning. On the other hand, some people who are successful language learners find it difficult to succeed in other fields.
Language teachers often offer advice to language learners:“Read as much as you can in the new language.” “Practice speaking the language every day.” “Live with people who speak the language.” “Don't translate—try to think in the new language.”
But what does a successful language learner do? Language learning research shows that successful language learners are similar in many ways. First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher; they discover their own way to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. Successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language; they look for such a chance. They find people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate; they are willing to make mistakes and try again. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word. Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them.
