W:Chris, can you believe it? The European Union has fined Google $5 billion.
M:What? $5 billion? That's really unbelievable. But why?
W:It's because Google broke EU rules for market competition. Google is the maker of the Android mobile operating system for mobile phones and similar devices. Google requires mobile phone producers to install Google Search software in their phones. Google made having the search software a condition of letting phone makers link to Google's app store. Also Google paid big phone producers to only install the Google search app.

W:You're right. The fine is the biggest the EU has ever given to a company for anti-competitive activities.
M:Will Google be able to pay it?
W:Don't worry about that. The size of the fine isn't that large if the company's income is considered. Google is part of the technology company Alphabet, based in Mountain View, California. Alphabet had income of about $31 billion in the first three months of 2018.
M:It really makes a lot of money.
W:Definitely. Do you know the EU also fined Google in June of 2017?
M:No. How much was it fined?
W:Just $2.2 billion less. Oh, the manager is getting in. Let's return to work.

There's no doubt that one of the greatest human achievements is the exploration of the space. Ever since astronaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to be sent into the orbit around the moon in 1961, scientists have been pushing the boundaries further and further. But until now the exploration into the unknown has been dominated (主导) by men.
第二部分
38
Of course, in the past, women were also included in the space projects and played an active role on the ground and behind the scenes. For example, they worked as seamstresses (女裁缝师), sewing vital spaceflight components. In fact, many of NASA's key works would never have been possible without them. Recently Hollywood produced a movie called Hidden Figures to focus on a group of American female mathematicians, especially the black women, who helped NASA send the first American into space. But this was not women's only contribution. Back in 1963, Soviet astronaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to be sent into space. However, after that, space flight programs were slow to employ women. In the USA, NASA didn't accept applications from women to become astronauts until 1978.
第二部分
39
But attitudes have changed and leading officials at NASA say that the first person to set foot on Mars should be a woman. The space agency aims to have a sex-balanced workforce but can only achieve that if equal numbers of men and women are trained for science and technology jobs. As Allison McIntryre told the BBC, “My director is a woman. We have female astronauts. We haven't put a woman on the moon yet. And I think that perhaps the first person to step on Mars should be a woman.”

Surface Exploration. Robots make great explorers on planets, moons, and other landing areas. Aside from Earth, just about every surface in the solar system is unsafe for humans to explore. The air on most other planets is insufficient for humans to breathe, making it necessary to wear a space suit and oxygen equipment. The temperatures on these surfaces are much too hot or much too cold for any humans to withstand. Plus there would be complications with radiation, weather, and lack of gravity. Robots have much less limitation in these areas and can survive much longer under these conditions.
第二部分
53
Data Collection. Robots are designed for collecting scientific data. Robots are also able to perform many tasks at one time and can process information much quicker and more efficiently. Important scientific projects from detecting minerals, analyzing ground samples, and finding water are all performed much quicker and more accurately (精确地) by robots.
第二部分
54
Cost-effectiveness. The use of robots has made the cost of space exploration much less expensive than it would cost for humans to do the work. In order to successfully send humans into space we would need to build a vehicle that can not only carry humans, but also have enough food and water to keep them alive for the duration of the trip. Moreover, robots have no problems working for hours on end. Robots never complain. They don't require food or water, and they never need a bathroom break.
第二部分
55
Space Travel. Over the past 30 years or so, there have been many different types of robots used successfully in the exploration of space. Perhaps the most famous and successful robots are the Spirit and Opportunity who have both been exploring the surface of Mars. They have both been very successful with experiments on soil and rocks and have even found evidence of water in Mars' history.

A rocket problem that forces astronauts to evacuate (撤退) may appear to be a plot straight out of a Hollywood movie. However, that is exactly what happened to Russian astronaut Alexey Ovchinin and American astronaut Nick Hague. __36__
第二部分
61
The event happened shortly after the Soyuz rocket and its Soyuz MS-10 space capsule (联盟号太空舱) carrying the astronauts took off from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. __37__
The takeoff went off smoothly, but just 119 seconds later, officials from Russia's space agency informed NASA that the booster (助推器) had failed to separate from the capsule. __38__ Instead, they were ordered to evacuate by separating the capsule and returning to Earth in what is known as a ballistic descent mode (弹道下降模式). The sharp drop is similar to free-falling from the skies and subjects astronauts to high levels of g-force.
第二部分
62
__39__ They appeared to be in excellent condition when they crash-landed about 20 kilometers east of Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan, just 34 minutes after they stopped the task. Upon arrival, they were quickly found by the rescue team from Baikonur Cosmodrome and taken to the hospital for a quick check-up to ensure they had not suffered any injuries during their rough ride back to Earth.
It will take a few weeks for experts to determine what caused the problem of the usually reliable Soyuz rocket. __40__ Hague, who was on his way to the space station for the first time later joked, “I imagined that my first trip to outer space was going to be a memorable one. I didn't expect it to be quite this memorable.”
第二部分
63
A.To their sadness, this event became a nightmare for their future space journey.
B.The two scientists were on their way to carry out a six-month task at the International Space Station.
C.Surprisingly, the harrowing event has not stopped Hague's and Ovchinin's wish to go to space.
D.Thus, the astronauts didn't head to the International Space Station.
E.And luckily, they became the main characters of the movie about space exploration.
第二部分
64
F.Fortunately, the “movie” had a happy ending with both scientists returning to Earth safely.
G.Fortunately, Hague and Ovchinin had been well-trained for such emergencies.
篇章导读:本文是一篇记叙文。文章记叙了俄罗斯宇航员Alexey Ovchinin (阿列克谢·奥夫奇宁)和美国宇航员Nick Hague (尼克·黑格)被迫撤离火箭的事件。

How big is space? That is a question man has been asking since the beginning of time. When your grandparents were in school, it was __41__ that the universe was very small perhaps only 5,000 light years __42__. 500 years ago people considered that the universe was only a little bit __43__ than the Earth. In modern times with the power of technology we are finally starting to __44__ the immense (无边的) size of the universe, and it is much bigger than anyone __45__ have ever imagined.
第三部分
69
Scientists cannot stretch a measuring tape from the Earth to a nearby star, so __46__ do they know how far away they are? Scientists use something called parallax (视差). Parallax means __47__ that they look at how much the stars move in the sky __48__ throughout the year as the Earth circles the Sun. This is not something __49__ to you. In fact if you stretch out your hand in front of you and look at your thumb, while __50__ one eye, and then the other, your thumb will appear to move back and forth. Stars do the __51__ thing, but our eyes are too close to see the __52__. However, if we take a picture while on one side of the Earth's orbit, and then take another when we get to the __53__ side of the orbit, then we have a large enough __54__ that we can see the stars' parallax, and __55__ how far away they really are.

The McDonnells lived in a small brick house in Larchmont, a suburb of New York City. Jim was foreman of mail carriers at the post office where he had worked for 25 years. Married in 1960, he and Anne were childless.
第四部分
92
On the evening of the eleventh anniversary of their marriage, carrying out the garbage, Jim McDonnell slipped on icy steps, and struck his head. A few days later, driving to work, he lost control of the car, hit a telephone pole, and banged his forehead against the windshield. The following day he fell off the stairs, and again he banged his head. Found unconscious, he was hospitalized for three days with a cerebral concussion (脑震荡). One day in the same month, Jim borrowed a friend's station wagon and drove to Kennedy Airport to pick up Anne's brother and family. When he returned the borrowed car at 10 pm, he was unaware that the wallet containing his identification had slipped out of his pocket onto the floor of the car. After that, he was never seen again.
第四部分
93
So what really happened to Anne's husband? During his walk home, Jim had indeed blacked out (昏厥), losing all ability to remember who he was and where he lived. What happened then is unclear. The next thing he knew was that he was in downtown Philadelphia, a city he had never visited before. Seeing signs advertising the services of a James Peters, a real estate broker, Jim adopted James Peters as his own name. He had no past; his only reality was the present. James Peters got a Social Security Card, which could be obtained at that time without showing a birth certificate, and took a job in a health club. He next worked at a cancer research institute, cleaning out animal cages. He also got a nightshift job at the P&P luncheonette, where he became well known for his omelets (煎蛋卷), as well as his kindness and good humor.

About a month before Christmas 1985, colleagues noticed that Jim had grown unusually quiet and depressed. Something seemed to be turning in his mind. On December 22, Jim had fallen and banged his head. The next day at work he seemed distracted, and late that afternoon he had fallen again, striking his head. On December 24, he awoke feeling confused, yet delighted. After almost 15 years, he knew who he was! He was James A. McDonnell, Jr. of Larchmont, New York. His wife's name was Anne.
第四部分
Anne had just returned home from Christmas Mass, where she lit candles and prayed for Jim. A light snow was falling, and she was in a hurry to leave for Christmas dinner at her sister's before the roads grew slick. Then the doorbell rang. “Oh my,” she thought, “this is not a good time for a visitor.” Anne opened the door and saw a man with a full white beard. Immediately she recognized Jim. She couldn't speak. To Jim, Anne looked a little older, but prettier too. His heart overflowed. “Hello, Anne,” he said.
