Suppose that you have some free time to kill. There is an enjoyable short video to watch and an interesting 1,000-word article to read. You can only choose one of the two. Which one will you pick?
Perhaps the video will be your choice. Over the past few years, watching videos online has become a part of many people’s daily lives. The number of people who read long articles patiently has been cut down. Some people fear that videos will one day take the place of text. But in my opinion, this isn’t going to happen.
Videos can in fact help us learn new information more quickly. However, can they help us fully learn about the ancient world? Many historical stories were recorded using only texts. Only through the reading of these texts can we truly and fully learn about what happened during the ancient world and the knowledge people had got.
Short videos are a type of “instant culture”. They come into and leave our minds like flying cars. Often, we can’t help looking for the second video at once after we’ve finished watching one. But can we always remember and understand the contents (内容) of these videos? When we read a long article patiently, we often pay close attention to the contents. What’s more, texts allow us to use our imagination, while videos don’t.
In a word, videos might change the way people learn about the world and the way they make themselves happy, but texts will never be replaced. Texts are like immortal (不朽的) stars which shine from the past to the future.
46. Why does the writer think people will choose to watch a short video?
A. The 1,000-word article is not interesting at all.
B. Watching videos takes up too much time.
C. Fewer people can patiently read long articles.
D. Videos have taken the place of texts.
47. How can people fully learn about the ancient world according to the writer?
A. By reading texts. B. By using imagination.
C. By watching videos. D. By talking with old people.
48. What does the underlined word “instant” mean?
A. Slow. B. Quick. C. Small. D. Big.
49. What is the writer trying to do in the passage?
A. To give advice. B. To ask for help.
C. To express feelings. D. To show ideas.
50. Which of the following can be the best title?
A. Texts Will Never Be Replaced B. Texts—a Way to Learn about Past
C. Videos Are Enjoyable and Popular D. Videos—the Best to Kill Free Time

Smartphones are getting boring. The new models are either a bit faster or have better cameras, but they are basically no different from the ones already in our pockets. This is why scientists are hoping, and working for something new, something that will change our lives just as greatly as smartphones do. At the moment, the next invention might be smart glasses.
Just imagine. Instead of having to pick up your phone and look at the screen, all of the information you need simply appears just in front of you, in your glasses. Satellite navigation (导航) directions would appear right there on the road. And your smart glasses could guide you to the right shelf in the supermarket!
Smart glasses could also be used in industry. They could show engineers the instructions they need to fix things more quickly. A doctor could carry out a difficult operation, guided in real time by someone on the other side of the world.
This may sound impossible. But most of the technologies to invent them are already there. For example, one key technology is called AR, which can make digital 3-D objects appear as if they are part of the real world. We’ve used it a lot on our video calls. Similarly, huge progress has been made in spatial audio. This is when a sound is made to give it a sense of place, like what you hear in an empty room. Some high-end earphones can already do that. Future glasses will of course need to recognize (识别) your voice to do tasks. This technology has been widely used in our daily life.
So, why aren’t we all wearing smart glasses yet? So far, no one has invented a good way to send images (映像) of our world onto glasses. However, with the rapid development of technology, smart glasses could arrive much sooner than we think.
51. Why does the writer mention smartphones in Paragraph 1?

A. You can pick up your phone and look at the screen.

54. Which of the following technologies needs to be improved to invent smart glasses?
A. Making spatial audio. B. Recognizing voices.

We know many musical instruments well, such as pianos, violins, drums and so on. What about the erhu? The erhu is a traditional Chinese instrument. It is the most popular of the huqin family, and it has a long history.
The modern erhu developed from the xiqin, which was played by many ethnic minorities (少数民族) during the Tang Dynasty. In the Song Dynasty, musicians began to use the erhu to perform different kinds of music, and it became quite a popular instrument. With the rise of some forms of folk art, the art of the erhu developed quickly during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It became an important accompanying (伴奏) instrument in different folk music. At present, it is used in both traditional and modern music, such as in pop, rock and jazz. It has even become a solo (独奏) instrument. One of the most famous musical pieces played on the erhu is Erquan Yingyue.
As the erhu was mainly played by common people and the playing skills were passed down orally (口头地), there are few written records about the erhu that can be found. To study the history and the development of the erhu, historians (历史学者) usually turn to ancient paintings. The earliest pictures of this instrument were found in Yulin Caves and Eastern Thousand Buddha Caves in Gansu Province, where five erhu pictures were discovered on murals (壁画).

B
48 What does the underlined word “instant” mean?
A. Slow. B. Quick. C. Small. D. Big.
