Three hundred years ago, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu got her daughter inoculated(接种) against smallpox, making her child the first person in the West to be protected in this way. Without Montagu's willingness to adopt a practice she had learned from other cultures, the introduction of vaccines around 80 years later would never have taken place. Montagu first witnessed inoculation when she accompanied her husband to Turkey. Inoculation had started in Asia, probably in China, as early as the 10th century AD.Montagu observed how older women in Turkey took a tiny amount of pus(脓) from a person with smallpox. They then used needles to make cuts on people's wrists and ankles and added the pus to their bloodstream. This helped people gain immunity from future infection. Like other visitors to the country, Montagu took steps to ensure that her son was inoculated. This worked well, but she knew that trying it in England would be far more challenging. Inoculation performed by unlicensed amateurs would threaten doctors' professional standing and potentially rob them of valuable income. Some people also disagree with the practice, as they saw it as going against nature. Back in England, Montagu observed smallpox infections became increasingly severe. Eventually, in April 1721, she decided to use the Turkish practice to have her daughter inoculated, because she believed that the rewards would outweigh the risks. After a safe time had passed following the inoculation, Montagu allowed doctors to examine her daughter. Doctors in Britain gradually accepted the practice. About 80 years later, a pioneering physician found smallpox vaccines to destroy smallpox completely. As early as last century, academics argued that Montagu was no more than an enthusiastic amateur. In truth, she made a vital scientific contribution towards finding the cure for smallpox. 4.What is the second paragraph mainly about? A.The origin of smallpox inoculation. B.Turkish women's invention of inoculation. C.The benefits from smallpox inoculation. D.Montagu's first access to inoculation. 根据第二段首句“Montagu first witnessed inoculation when she accompanied her husband to Turkey.(Montagu第一次目睹接种是在她陪丈夫去土耳其的时候。)” D。 5.Why did Montagu know it was hard to try inoculation in England? A.Because it might harm doctors' interests. B.Because deep down it was against nature. C.Because it was a foreign practice. D.Because it might cost valuable money. 根据第三段中“...would threaten doctors' professional standing and potentially rob them of valuable income.” A。 6.What could have led doctors in Britain to accept inoculation? A.The severe situation in smallpox infections. B.The result of Montagu's daughter's inoculation. C.A physician's discovery of smallpox vaccines. D.Montagu's focus on its rewards rather than its risks. 根据倒数第二段中“After a safe time had passed following the inoculation, Montagu allowed doctors to examine her daughter.”以及最后一段中“Doctors in Britain gradually accepted the practice.” B。 7.Which of the following can be used to describe Montagu? A.A fearless scientist. B.A brilliant inventor. C.A devoted explorer. D.An unsung hero. 根据第一段中“With the world's attention on vaccines, now it feels like a good moment to sing the praises of an often forgotten contributor to their development.(随着世界对疫苗的关注,感觉现在是一个很好的时刻来歌颂一个为了它们的发展而经常被遗忘的贡献者。)” C (2022·江苏省丹阳高级中学高二期末)When Dr.Dana Suskind began doing cochlear implants(耳蜗移植) at the University of Chicago—a surgical technique that allows oncedeaf babies to hear—in her followups with families, she noticed a big difference in how the nowhearing children acquired language. Once they could hear, some children's language skills grew rapidly, while others' languished. Why this was so began to confuse her. What was causing some children to leap ahead in their language skills? The difference turned out to be the words children heard from their parents and caregivers, millions of them. Baby talk, explaining and describing, asking questions even when they weren't going to get an answer—adults' “using their words” is the thing that some parents and caregivers do thousands of times a day and that builds a baby's brain. While attending a course on child language development, Suskind heard about the groundbreaking Hart and Risley study on the differences in how parents from different income levels interacted with their children. After painstakingly following around families and recording how often they talked to their children, Hart and Risley found that the children of professional parents heard approximately 11 million words in a year, while children from poor welfare families heard only 3 million. Hart and Risley predicted that, by the time poor children turned 4, they had heard 30 million fewer words than their richer peers. There was a direct connection between how much parents' talk the children had heard and how prepared they were to learn once they arrived at school. Hart and Risley wrote, “With few exceptions, the more parents talked to their children, the faster the children's vocabularies grew and the higher the children's IQ test scores were at age 3 and later.” “The truth is, much of what you see in children born into poverty is analogous to children born deaf,” Suskind said. “It's a really important point. The most fundamental science shows that it's really language, and all that comes with it, the brainbuilding aspect of things, that make a difference,” said Suskind. 8.What confused Dr. Dana Suskind? A.Some artificial cochlears failed to function properly. B.Deaf babies behaved strangely after cochlear surgery. C.Kids with cochlear implants acquired unusual language skills. D.Kids with cochlear implants differed greatly in language skills. 根据第一段中的“Once they could hear, some children's language skills grew rapidly, while others' languished. Why this was so began to confuse her.” D。 9.What can we infer about professional parents from Paragraph 3? A.They spend more time with their kids out of work. B.They teach their kids language skills at an earlier age. C.They use a larger vocabulary talking to their kids. D.They communicate more frequently with their kids. 根据第三段中的“...the children of professional parents heard approximately 11 million words in a year, while children from poor welfare families heard only 3 million.” D。 10.Which can best replace the underlined word “analogous” in the last paragraph? A.Similar. B.Superior. C.Contrary. D.Attractive. A。 11.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.Language development of deaf children B.Talking to children helps their brain develop C.Cochlear Implant Project benefits deaf kids D.The role of parents in their children's IQ tests B D (2022·湖南永州高二期末质量监测)Around 1,500 endangered and rare languages are at a high risk of being lost in the next century, according to a study published on Thursday in Nature Ecology and Evolution. The study found that around half of the world's 7,000 documented languages are endangered. It also found that greater road density was associated with higher risk of endangerment. “It's as if roads are helping dominant languages overwhelm other smaller languages,” coauthor and professor at the Australian National University Lindell Bromham said in a press release. Greater endangerment was also associated with higher average years of schooling, suggesting that formal education contributes to loss of language diversity. “Mainstream education in a dominant language can lead to loss of competence in minority languages. We urgently need to invest in bilingual education and develop programs that allow communities to bring their heritage language into schools, to make sure the language stays strong and is passed on to future generations,” Bromhall told CBS News. The study found that unless there is intervention, the world could lose at least one language per month, with language loss three times more in the next 40 years. The authors recommended “urgent investment” in communitybased programs like bilingual education programs and language documentation. And some of the recommendations that experts made 20 years ago are still the same: governments should remove bans on languages and adults should encourage children to speak other languages—including their native language. “Each language is a reflection on the creativity and inventiveness of human minds, a beautiful and fascinating solution to complex communication challenges,” Bromham told CBS News. “Most importantly, for many people, language symbolizes cultural identity and belonging. Many groups mourn(悼念) the decline of unique languages and long for competency in languages no longer spoken.” 12.What was related with higher risk of language endangerment? A.Less road density. B.Unpopularity among language learners. C.Greater competence of small languages. D.Higher average years of schooling. 根据第四段第一句“Greater endangerment was also associated with higher average years of schooling, suggesting that formal education contributes to loss of language diversity.(更严重的濒危状态也与更高的平均受教育年限有关,这表明正规教育是语言多样性丧失的原因之一。)” D。 13.What should government do to preserve language diversity? A.Stop bans on languages. B.Create more language education programs. C.Put more investment in language research. D.Encourage people to speak other languages. 根据第五段最后一句中“governments should remove bans on languages and adults should encourage children to speak other languages—including their native language(政府应该取消对语言的禁令,成年人应该鼓励儿童说其他语言——包括他们的母语)”可知,为了保护语言的多样性,政府部门应该取消对语言的禁令。故选A。 14.What do we know from the text? A.The causes of language loss. B.The high risk of language loss. C.The measures of language protection. D.The importance of language diversity. (2022·江苏丹阳高二期末) Practical Ways to Show Respect for a Friend ·Show respect for their life choices and decisions. It's my honor to give a speech here. It can be clearly seen that an increasing number of foreigners are learning Chinese nowadays, with many of them learning it from kindergarten to high school. Honestly speaking, I feel so proud that our language is taking off around the world. On the one hand, it shows our growing national power;on the other hand, it builds a bridge for people to understand our culture better. In the long run, I believe there is a tendency towards the growing popularity of learning Chinese, because it will not only help us know attractive Chinese culture, but also help us gain a promising job opportunity. Thank you! (2022·广东揭阳揭东区高二期末)It was the first day of our new grade. Everyone in the classroom was chatting happily, excited to see each other again after the long holidays. When the door slid open, all of us stopped talking and turned to look. In came our teacher Ms Sullivan, followed by an ordinarylooking boy. “This boy's name is Rafael.” Ms Sullivan announced. “He's a transfer student(转校生), and he's going to be in our class starting from today. Make sure all of you welcome him warmly.” The class clapped. But I didn't want to have a second look at the newcomer, for he had no outstanding qualities considering his small figure and casual Tshirt. “Oh, I forgot to mention one thing.” Ms Sullivan spoke up. “Rafael actually has hearing problems. Normally he would have hearing aids on, but his old ones have just been broken. His doctor suggested that he stay at home until he got his new ones. However, Rafael insisted on attending his first day of school. So if you want to communicate with him, you have to write it on a piece of paper.” This single speech sent the whole class up into an uproar(嘈杂). Some students looked at each other with expressions of surprise. Others voiced cries of concern out of pity. Ms Sullivan calmed everyone down. “I'd like someone to personally help him out throughout the day. Do I have any volunteers?” “How can a disabled person be intelligent?” I thought to myself. I refused to raise my hand, expecting someone else would. But nobody did or said anything. Dead silence spread across the classroom. It was by total bad luck that my eyes happened to meet Ms Sullivan's. “How about you, James?” She asked me. “Is it okay for you to take care of Rafael just for today?” It is difficult to refuse a request by someone, especially if that person is a teacher. I sighed and nodded slightly. Ms Sullivan gestured for Rafael to sit beside me and then asked us to share our holiday stories with the class. Paragraph 1: Immediately, the class became excited.______________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Then Rafael rose and walked onto the platform._________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ [参考范文] Paragraph 1: Immediately, the class became excited. Some could hardly wait to tell their seatmates about their holiday trips, eyes shining and faces glowing with joy. Those who hadn't been anywhere bombarded them with inquiring questions. Enormous joy welled up in every corner of the classroom. Obviously confused at the sudden noisy situation, Rafael turned to me for reasons in written words. Surprisingly, my explanation put a smile on his face. “Any volunteer to share your story?” asked Ms Sullivan, whose words I set down on paper for Rafael. Paragraph 2: Then Rafael rose and walked onto the platform. Greeting us with a confident smile, Rafael shared his story in a magnetic voice, which left me stunned. I felt more ashamed to learn that he ran a website to help children with hearing problems than guilty about stupidly thinking disabled people couldn't be intelligent. Then his voice was lost in a thunderous outburst of applause. Feeling a lump in the throat, I clapped my hands even more loudly, determined never to judge a book by its cover.
