A CHRONOLOGICA—The Unbelievable Years that Defined History DID YOU KNOW ... ◆In 105 AD paper was invented in China? ◆When Columbus discovered the New World? ◆The British Museum opened in 1759? CHRONOLOGICA is a fascinating journey through time, from the foundation of Rome to the creation of the Internet. Along the way are tales of kings and queens, hot air balloons ...and monkeys in space. Travel through 100 of the most unbelievable years in world history and learn why being a Roman Emperor wasn't always as good as it sounds, how the Hundred Years' War didn't actually last for 100 years and why Spencer Perceval holds a rather unfortunate record. CHRONOLOGICA is an informative and entertaining tour into history, beautifully illustrated and full of unbelievable facts. While CHRONOLOGICA tells the stories of famous people in history such as Thomas Edison and Alexander the Great, this book also gives an account of the lives of lesserknown individuals including the explorer Mungo Park and sculptor Gutzon Borglum. This complete but brief historical collection is certain to entertain readers young and old, and guaranteed to present even the biggest history lover with something new! 1.What is CHRONOLOGICA according to the next? A.A biography. B.A travel guide. C.A history book. D.A science fiction. 2.How does the writer recommend CHRONOLOGICA to readers? A.By introducing some of its contents. B.By giving details of its collection. C.By telling stories at the beginning. D.By comparing it with other books. 3.Who is likely to buy a copy of CHRONOLOGICA? A.People who want to take a fascinating journey. B.People who want to get updated information. C.People who are much interested in history. D.People who simply want to read to kill the time. B David Rees runs a truly distinctive business. He charges customers $15 to sharpen their pencils to perfections, using a variety of tools. I know what you're thinking—is this a joke? The 39yearold gets asked that question a lot. To clarify everything, he even created a special section on his website telling everyone he's actually providing a real service. You can supply your own pencil or you can have Rees sharpen one of his own favorite 2B pencils. After that, he mails it to you in a display tube with the shavings in a separate bag, and an authentic certificate which just happens to mention the pencil is so sharp as to be a dangerous object. To achieve the desired result, the master sharpener uses all kinds of tools, including general sandpapers, pocket knives and even a special $450 sharpening machine. “It depends on what the customer wants to use his/her pencil for,” he says. “That determines the most appropriate pencilsharpening technique. Some customers buy pencils as inspirational symbols while others buy them because of their special memories of classic 2B pencils.” $15 to have a pencil sharpened is a bit expensive though, right? You're not the only one who feels that way, and David's unique business has really angered lots of people, who talk of inequality in America, saying it is so insane for the wealthy to pay $15 to sharpen a pencil. But others will say, “This is just our urge to put an end to the welfare state because new ideas arise along with the business.” David admits his trade is sort of unusual. But there are those who actually value his service, as is proven by the over 500 orders he has gotten. 4.How could David make money by sharpening pencils? A.He invented new tools for the job. B.He promoted his skill on his website. C.He saved lots of time for other people. D.He provided quality service to his customers. 5.What can we infer from David Rees' words? A.David Rees knows all kinds of pencil users. B.David Rees always writes with pencils. C.David Rees values ideas behind the pencils. D.David Rees provides personalized services. 6.What does the underlined word “insane”(in Paragraph 5) mean? A.Deliberate. B.Rewarding. C.Unreasonable. D.Irresponsible. 7.What seems to be the author's attitude to David Rees' trade? A.Indifferent. B.Disapproving. C.Objective. D.Supportive. C A recent global survey of 2000 highnetworth individuals found that 60% were not planning on a traditional retirement. Among US participants, 75% expected to continue working in some capacity even after stepping away from fulltime jobs. “Many of these people made their wealth by doing something they're passionate(有激情的) about,” says Daniel Egan, head of behavioral finance for Barclays Wealth Americas. “Given the choice, they prefer to continue working.” Barclays calls these people “nevertirees”. Unlike many Americans compelled into early retirement by company restrictions, the average nevertiree often has no one forcing his hand. If 106yearold investor Irving Kahn, head of his own family firm, wants to keep coming to work every day. Who's going to stop him? Seventyeightyearold Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's job security is guaranteed in the Constitution. It may seem that these elderly people are trying to cheat death. In fact, they are. And it's working. Howard Friedman, a professor at UC Riverside, found in his research that those who work hardest and are successful in their careers often live the longest lives. “People are generally being given bad advice to slow down, take it easy, stop worrying, and retire to Florida,” he says. He described one study participant, still working at the age of 100, who was recently disappointed to see his son retire. “We're beginning to see a change in how people view retirement,”says George Leeson, codirector of the Institute of Population Ageing at Oxford. Where once retirement was seen as a brief reward after a long struggle through some miserable job, it is now akin(近似) to being cast aside. What Leeson terms “the Warren Buffett effect” is becoming more broadly appealing as individuals come to “view retirement as not simply being linked to economic productivity but also about contribution.” Observers are split on whether this is a wholly good thing. On the one hand, companies and financial firms can benefit from the wisdom of a resilient(坚韧的) chief. On the other, the new generation can find it more difficult to advance—an argument that typically holds little sway to a nevertiree. 8.What do Irving Kahn and Ruth Bader Ginsburg have in common? A.Neither of them is subject to forced retirement. B.Neither of them desires reward for their work. C.Both cling to their positions despite opposition. D.Both are capable of coping with heavy workloads. 9.What is the finding of Howard Friedman's research? A.The harder you work, the bigger your fortune will be. B.The earlier you retire, the healthier you will be. C.Elderly people have to slow down to live longer. D.Working at an advanced age lengthens people's life. D。 10.What is the traditional view of retirement according to the passage? A.It means a burden to the younger generation. B.It is a symbol of a mature and civilized society. C.It is a compensation for one's lifelong hard work. D.It helps increase a nation's economic productivity. C。 11.What do critics say about “nevertirees”? A.They are an obstacle to a company's development. B.They lack the creativity of the younger generation. C.They cannot work as efficiently as they used to. D.They prevent young people from getting ahead. D。 D Every September, as summer ends and the first day of school approaches, I spend a lot of time thinking about darkness about my students. Perhaps other teachers would say the same,in a joking way. But I teach a high school course on trauma(创伤) literature, and my students belong to a generation who are described as the most spoiled(宠坏的), stressed and easily hurt in history. So the question of darkness is often on my mind. In 2016, Collins Dictionary included “snowflake generation” among its Words of the Year, which describes young adults of the 2010s as a group “less resilient(适应的) and more likely to feel upset than previous generations.” But after twelve years of teaching this course, which covers some of the most emotionally difficult texts in contemporary literature—narratives(讲述) of war, slavery and so on—I'm pretty sure the comment on my young students is wrong. In particular, I don't believe what the narrative says—this generation is lacking in the resilience necessary for difficult literature. For many years, I've watched my students circle tirelessly around some difficult questions that make us puzzled. Instead of hiding from that world they are in, they try to change it in a way that will allow them to control it successfully. This is the reason why every September, I ask my students to read the most difficult books I can find for them. I don't do this because I want to hurt them. Literature is practice. And I want my students, through these difficult books, to practice living. I want them to practice recognizing historical gaps and to bridge them. “But this too is true: stories can save us,” writes Tim O'Brien in The Things They Carried. I believe and stick to that idea, year after year, on the first day of school. Not because these stories will save my students. But because I'm hoping my students will grow up and save the rest of us. 12.What are the young adults of the 2010s like according to the Collins Dictionary? A.Unsocial and anxious. B.Stressed but strongwilled. C.Sensitive and greedy. D.Enthusiastic but selfcentered. A book recycling project, carried out by the Student Union, calls on senior three students to be a green schoolleaver. They are encouraged to donate their books by leaving them in the boxes outside their classrooms, which not only helps deal with their used books properly but promotes their awareness of environmental protection. Since 2010, the project has been well received, for it has greatly cut down waste and spread the idea of green life. Looking forward to your reply. She was too weak to go out at all, which was sad and disappointing. That was because Grandma and Grandpa had been planning to take my little sister Indi and me to the zoo for Valentine's Day. Grandma, as an animal lover, had been especially looking forward to it. On Valentine's Day Indi begged Grandma to go to the zoo together. But Grandma jokingly explained that if she went there, she might spread her cold to other visitors, or even to the animals, making them all start sneezing. In my mind, I imagined the sight that an elephant kept sneezing. Meanwhile I made my arm into a trunk and blurted out a funny trumpeting sound that ended in a gigantic sneeze.“Good one, Brother!” Indi laughed. “That elephant would need a huge box of tissues.” Grandma was amused. But she insisted that she should stay at home and rest up. She wished us a pleasant visit and reminded us to send her regards to the monkeys in the zoo. Well, we did go and we did have a great time but I kept wishing Grandma could have been there with us. When we reached the monkey mountain, Grandpa told us to hold still and say “cheese” and snapped a good picture of the monkeys and us. “Cheese!” I said. But Indi said, “Happy Valentine's Day, Grandma!” “You were supposed to say cheese,” said Grandpa. Indi shrugged, “It just came out.” “I'm glad it did,” I said, because your words just gave me a fantastic idea! What if we take pictures of different animals, and then turn them into a special Valentine gift for Grandma? Indi and Grandpa agreed and we kept taking pictures with delight for Grandma's surprise. Paragraph 1: When we got home, we set about making the gift. ________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Then we took the gift upstairs to Grandma's room.________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ [参考范文] Paragraph 1: When we got home, we set about making the gift. At first, we printed the photos and planned to fill them on the heart cards. “But we have limited room!” complained Indi. So we agreed to make Grandma a Valentine zoo book. The book included various animals, each occupying a page. Indi was responsible for coloring the photos with markers while I made speech balloons coming out of animals' mouths. For example, the monkeys said, “We go bananas with you.” Finally, we stuck the cards together to form a book with Grandpa's help. It took forever to finish but it turned out great. Paragraph 2: Then we took the gift upstairs to Grandma's room. “I bet she'd like it.” Grandpa said. Indi and I nodded with agreement. On entering the room, Indi rushed to present Grandma with our creation. When browsing the Valentine book, Grandma was deeply moved and happy tears blurred her eyes. “Oh, you little sweet potatoes!” Grandma smiled, “I love you.” It seemed that the love and devotion behind our gift had turned Grandma's frown upside down. At that moment, it suddenly dawned on me that in terms of a gift, what matters much is not the gift but the care you show.
