While I was eating dinner at the fast food restaurant where I normally go when I'm in a hurry, the manager announced that everybody had to leave the building. The place was crowded and that made the situation dangerous, as everyone was determined to get out first. To make matters worse, an elderly woman, who must have weighed 300 pounds, had just come up to the entrance, which was also the only exit. In the meantime, I remembered that I had left my purse in the chair I had been occupying when the announcement was made. It was certainly not convenient to return and get it, but I had to do it. When I finally got outside, I saw that the police bomb team had arrived and the men were studying the area. They finally found out that it was all a false alarm and the crowd went away. 17.What was the speaker doing at the fast food restaurant? A.Waiting on tables. B.Having dinner. You may have noticed that I have a line of apple trees running alongside the fence that separates our two gardens. You may also have taken pleasure in the frequent sight of your two children sitting on your lawn directly by the fence. And you may also have noticed that my apple trees, so to speak, bend over the fence and seem to look down at your children with interest. It is only natural that your children should sometimes seem to return that interest. And it is not only natural, but, I acknowledge, quite legal, for them occasionally to show that interest by picking all the apples that hang over on your side of the fence. But to be plain with you, Mr Jones, I am tired of seeing your children, day after day, tear the branches off the side of every one of my apple trees, and leave my trees looking as though a battle had been fought on one side of them. I am, if anything, even more tired of waking up these fine autumn mornings, to find even the apples on my side of the fence much less in number. I know this is the work of your children, since last night I was woken up midnight by the noise they were making climbing one of my trees, and (as they may have told you) chased them home. While I am on the subject, I am at least grateful to you for keeping your bonfire on the far side of your garden this year. Last year neither I nor your children had any apples, because the smoke from your bonfire destroyed all the flowers before the apples had time to form. I very much hope that next year—for the first time since I came to this village—I shall have my apples, and your children will have theirs and that the sight of the line of apple trees will be a pride to us both. Otherwise, I shall not express my displeasure simply in writing to you, but shall have to refer the matter to those capable of taking stronger action. 21.Why does J. Smith write the letter to Mr Jones? A.To make an apology. B.To express his displeasure. C.To develop a friendship. D.To convey his appreciation. 根据最后一段“Otherwise, I shall not express my displeasure simply in writing to you, but shall have to refer the matter to those capable of taking stronger action.(否则,我将不会仅仅写信给你来表达我的不满,我将不得不把这件事提交给那些有能力采取更有力行动的人。)”可知,J. Smith(J.史密斯)给Jones(琼斯)写信是为了表达自己的不满。故选B。 22.What is the general idea J. Smith means to communicate to Mr Jones in Paragraph 4? A.He never expected to be woken up by the children at night. B.He is heartbroken at the sight of the apples being stolen. C.He is tired of what the children has done to the apple trees. D.He is concerned about the children's disappointing behavior. C。 23.What do you know about J. Smith from the way he tries to solve the problem? A.He is obviously faultfinding. B.He is probably aggressive. C.He is rather badtempered. D.He is actually quite reasonable. D。 B A few years ago, I moved to Aurora, Ont. with my family and I longed to make friends in my new neighborhood. Where we lived the houses were jammed together so tightly. But the irony (讽刺) of living so close was that no one actually talked to each other; as in an openconcept office, they pretend they can't hear or see each other to maintain at least an illusion of privacy. It was not so easy to make friends as an adult. I was about to give up when I caught sight of a beautiful, tall blonde taking out her recycling. She walked with confidence—even her ponytail bounced. I gasped, “I recycle too! We have so much in common!” The question was, how would we meet? What would I say? So I thought, “What if I just happened to be jogging by?” I put on my running shoes, but after a few times around the block, dripping sweat, I didn't see her. I decided to seize on the one thing I already knew about her—she takes out her blue bin. The following day, I woke up a little earlier than usual. A little after 8 am, the garbage truck appeared and the blonde emerged. I grabbed a bin and made my way to the end of my driveway. “Just act naturally, Megan,” I told myself. “Good morning. How are you?” I said, cool as a cucumber. “Good. And you?” she replied. “Doing well ... I am a new comer, just a DJ. I talk for a living. Clearly!” “Interesting,” she said. As we both walked away, I turned and called out, “Oh, and by the way, I'm Megan.” “Michelle,” she replied. I walked back inside, wearing a giant grin. Our “coincidental” recycling meetups continued for a few weeks until I finally gathered my courage to ask her to watch The Bachelor with me and she said yes. That night, after we got everything ready, we settled on the couch and proceeded to drink wine, binge from our buffet, dissect doomed television relationships, tell stories about our own and laugh our faces off. We “found what we'd been looking for”: a new friend. 24.What can be inferred from Paragraph 2? A.The author lived in a small house. B.The neighbors actually didn't have privacy. C.The author lived in a very crowded neighborhood. D.The neighbors did not communicate with each other. 根据第二段第二句“But the irony (讽刺) of living so close was that no one actually talked to each other(但是很讽刺的事情是生活地如此之近,实际上人们却相互不说话)”可知,在这个地方邻里相互之间没有交流。故选D。 25.What do we know about their first meetup? A.The tall blonde pretended to be very cool. B.The tall blonde wore a big smile when talking. C.The author was quite satisfied with their first talk. D.The two friends met accidentally when the truck came. 根据第六段“As we both walked away, I turned and called out, ‘Oh, and by the way, I'm Megan.’ ‘Michelle,’ she replied. I walked back inside, wearing a giant grin.(当我们都走开时,我转过身喊道:‘哦,对了,我叫梅根。’‘米歇尔,’她回答。我走回屋里,咧嘴一笑。)”可知,作者和新朋友做了自我介绍,并且回到家后作者会心一笑,说明作者对于和新朋友的第一次见面是比较满意的。故选C。 26.Which of the following words can best describe the author? A.Timid but kindhearted. B.Shy but persistent. C.Hospitable and generous. D.Caring and modest. 根据第四段第一、二句“The question was, how would we meet? What would I say?(问题是,我们如何见面? B。 27.What's the main idea of the passage? A.A DJ talking for a living began to recycle. B.A blonde watched The Bachelor with a DJ. C.A new comer finally made friends with a blonde. D.Two women recycled together in the neighborhood. 根据第一段“A few years ago, I moved to Aurora, Ont. with my family and I longed to make friends in my new neighborhood.(几年前,我和我的家人搬到了安大略省的奥罗拉,我渴望在我的新社区交朋友。)”可知,这是阐述了故事的背景以及作者希望交到新朋友的意愿;根据文章结尾“We ‘found what we'd been looking for’: a new friend.(我们‘找到了我们一直在寻找的东西’:一个新朋友。)” C。 C The evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly held image of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels. An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it has ever been in the past. “We are surprised by just how positive today's young people seen to be about their families,” said one member of the research team. “They're expected to be rebellious (叛逆的) and selfish but actually they have other things on their mind; they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There's more negotiation (商议) and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decisionmaking process. They don't want to rock the boat.” So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends. “My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me,” says 17yearold Daniel Lazall. “I always tell them when I'm going out clubbing. As long as they know what I'm doing, they're fine with it.” Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees. “Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example, as long as I'd done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that.” Maybe this positive view of family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that the idea of teenagers rebellion is not rooted in real facts. A researcher comments, “Our surprise that teenagers say they get along well with their parents comes because of a brief period in our social history when teenagers were regarded as different beings. But that idea of rebelling and breaking away from their parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled. The normal situation throughout history has been a smooth change from helping out with the family business to talking it over.” 28.What is the popular image teenagers today? A.They worry about school. B.They dislike living with their parents. C.They have to be locked in to avoid troubles. D.They quarrel a lot with other family members. 根据第一段第二句“But it seems that four out of five young people ... their room after endless family quarrels.(但现在似乎有五分之四的年轻人和他们的父母相处得很好,这与人们普遍认为的青少年在没完没了的家庭争吵后被锁在房间里的形象相反。)” D。 29.The study shows that teenagers don't want to ________. A.share family responsibility B.cause trouble in their families C.go boating with their family D.make family decisions 答案:B 推理判断题。根据第二段中的“An important new study into teenage attitudes ... people seen to be about their families(一项关于青少年态度的重要新研究令人惊讶地表明,他们的家庭生活比以往任何时侯都更加和谐。‘我们惊讶于今天的年轻人对他们的家庭表现出如此积极的态度’)”和第二段最后一句“They don't want to rock the boat.(他们不想把事情搞砸。)”可推断出,现在的青少年不想在家里制造麻烦。故选B。 30.According to the author, teenager rebellion ________. A.may be a false belief B.is common nowadays C.existed only in the 1960s D.resulted from changes in families 答案:A 细节理解题。根据第四段第二句“It is possible that the idea of teenagers rebellion is not rooted in real facts.” A。 31.What is the passage mainly about? A.Negotiation in family. B.Education in family. C.Harmony in family. D.Teenage trouble in family. 根据第二段第一句“An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it has ever been in the past.(一项关于青少年态度的重要新研究令人惊讶地表明,他们的家庭生活比以往任何时候都更加和谐。)” C。 D In the digital age, we rely on technology such as social media in trying to build interesting and varied lives. Social networking sites like Facebook are designed and promoted to make us believe enthusiastically that they are able to open up new experiences for us. There are constant notifications (通知) and updates, urging us to checkin to find out what is new. But if we do not use the technology wisely, we can end up becoming overly attached and trapped in a cycle of social media FOMO, a sign of deeper unhappiness. FOMO, or fear of missing out, is a fear that exciting or interesting events are happening somewhere else and that we are not able to take part. People who experience high levels of FOMO have been found to be more likely to give in to urges to write and check text messages while driving, as well as to use Facebook more often directly after waking, while going to sleep and during meals. When it comes to lasting happiness, it is best not to give in to FOMO, but rather to deal with the cycle of desires that fuel it. Hard as it is, we are better off working toward facing the fearful reality that we cannot experience everything we might like than to get caught in a cycle of checking behaviors that only cause anxiety. If we have become used to using social media as part of our attempts at living interesting lives, we must admit that it is not easy to change our approach. But change is almost always worthwhile in the long run. The fact that FOMO is so common in our digital age is a sign that there is something wrong with the way we are pursuing happiness and that we are not as happy as we might think we are. It should warn us that, in our eagerness to use digital technology to try to make ourselves happier, we may unintentionally be bringing on exactly the opposite result. 32.From Paragraph 1, we know that social media ________. A.is not worthy of our trust B.tries to attract our attention C.needs to be checked constantly D.provides new reliable information 答案:B 细节理解题。根据第一段最后两句“Social networking sites like Facebook are ... urging us to checkin to find out what is new.(像Facebook这样的社交网站的设计和推广是为了让我们满怀热情地相信,它们能够让我们得到新的体验。有不断的通知和更新,敦促我们登陆这类社交软件,并查看更新的内容。)”可知,社交媒体想吸引我们的注意力。故选B。 33.Which of the following could be regarded as social media FOMO? A.Feeling anxious about socializing with others. B.Being afraid of missing a Facebook update. C.Posting food photos on social media. D.Handling multiple tasks at once. 根据第二段最后一句“FOMO, or fear of missing out, is a fear that exciting or interesting events are happening somewhere else and that we are not able to take part.(错失恐惧症是一种害怕其他地方正在发生令人兴奋或有趣的事情,而我们却无法参与其中的恐惧。)” B。 34.What does the author suggest people do to achieve longterm happiness? A.Get rid of the desire to check social updates. B.Make small changes on a daily basis. C.Accept there are limits to enjoyment in life. D.Select the social media platform that is suitable to your taste. 根据第四段第一句“When it comes to lasting happiness ... the cycle of desires that fuel it.(要想获得持久的幸福,最好不要屈服于错失恐惧症,而要处理助长它的欲望循环。)” A。 35.What is the author's main purpose of writing the article? A.To tell us the danger of FOMO. B.To introduce wise ways of using technology. C.To show there is a direct link between digital technology and happiness. D.To persuade us to get out of FOMO for lasting happiness. 根据第四段第一句“When it comes to lasting happiness ... desires that fuel it.(要想获得持久的幸福,最好不要屈服于错失恐惧症,而要处理助长它的欲望循环。)” What springs to mind when you think of kung fu, also known as wushu? Brahm, a documentary filmmaker from the United States, explored this question in Searching of Kung Fu.(最近,美国纪录片导演劳伦斯·J·布拉姆在《功夫的搜索》中探讨了这个问题。)” 选项D(但它们真的揭示了功夫的含义吗?)为疑问句,与“this question”呼应,且“But”与前文构成转折关系,“they”指代前文提及的“the image of Shaolin monks”和“popular children's movies like Kung Fu Panda”。故选D。 37.F 前文“Around a decade ago, Brahm was unable to use one of his legs for about two years and had to walk with crutches and a cane.”提到他的腿出现了问题,后文“Now kung fu has become a daily routine for him.” 选项F(但通过慢慢地练习武术,他能够一步一步地恢复。) 38.E 根据前文“Martial arts can help us connect our body, connect our neural system, connect our blood flow.(武术可以帮助我们连接身体,连接我们的神经系统,连接我们的血液流动。)” 选项E(此外,它还可以把我们连接到我们的环境,增加我们的意识。) 根据后文“Nonviolence is one of these values, which is shown both in the name and the practice.(非暴力是这些价值观中的一种,它体现在名称和实践上。)” 选项B(还有一些人在实践中发现了额外的价值。) 40.G 前文“Wu, consists of two characters—ge, meaning ‘draggerax’ (匕首) and zhi, meaning ‘to stop’(‘武’由两个字组成——‘戈’,意为‘匕首’,‘止’,意为‘停止’。)”解释了“武”字在汉字构成方面的价值意义,选项G(所以,功夫在中国的意思是停止战斗的艺术,非暴力的艺术。) Alina's life as an angel of love began in middle school, when, in the planting club of her school, she learned how to grow eggplants. Last year, I transferred to Hongxing School. As far as entering a new school goes, making new friends was the biggest challenge; I missed my baseball teammates so much. I also had trouble with my studies. Completing those extensive reading assignments on my tight schedule became a real headache. I talked with my parents and teachers about my concerns. They encouraged me to take the initiative to reach out. Soon, I was making friends with my new schoolmates and getting involved in various activities. My academic performance also benefited from my newfound confidence. So, don't worry too much. Before you know it, you'll have dozens of friends. Trust me, you'll fit in soon. “Happy birthday, dear Rhea, happy birthday to you!” Silence penetrated (穿透) the room. “Make a wish,” my mom said in a sweet whisper. Now, I'm a straight A student, confident and popular, but that's not what I was a year ago. It was my mom's love that made me what I am today. Looking around the room filled with my friends, I couldn't help but smile. I wish ... Memories flooded back. The December morning breeze brushed my long, black hair as I stepped towards the doors of Hagenberg High. It was my first day of school. Only two weeks ago, my mom and I migrated to America, hoping for a bright new life. My English was poor, and I was alone, like a lost little kid. I unknowingly avoided interacting with anyone because I was afraid they'd laugh in my face. When my English was better, I decided, I would come up to people and maybe manage to say, “What's up?” Finally in gym class, a friendly brown face. She almost looked like me, only happier. Her name was Caroline. At lunchtime we found ourselves enjoying the cafeteria food. She wanted me to meet her friends. “Don't worry Rhea,” she assured me, calling me “sister”, “You'll fit right in.” And I did. It was as if some foreign soul entered my body and made me do things against my will. I found myself drinking beer, smoking cigarettes and skipping school. I didn't even like the taste of beer. The moment it touched my tongue I felt like I had to spit it back. But I didn't. I couldn't afford to look bad and lose my new “friends”. I began to miss at least one day of school a week to hang out with them. Then I missed two, three, even four days in a row. But while I was out having fun with my “friends,” inside I was full of conflict, unhappiness and regret. I stopped practicing my English sentences in front of the mirror and instead practiced, “I don't know why the school called mom. There must be something wrong in the system because I did not miss school today.” One day the school teacher called my mom and the truth came out. My mom's voice awakened me from my thoughts, “Have you made your birthday wish yet, sweetie?” [精彩范文] One day the school teacher called my mom and the truth came out. Mom thanked the teacher for telling her the truth about what happened. Mom and I had a long, calm talk. Mom said she understood my predicament. However, she told me that wanting to fit in and be popular doesn't mean going out drinking beer, smoking cigarettes and missing school with my socalled friends. A person's charm comes from one's own knowledge. My mom believed that I would be an excellent girl. She told me that always thinking would enable me to find a way out and there were more solutions than difficulties. Later, I broke with my former friends and put all my energy and time into my studies. I finally got excellent grades and was recognized by teachers, parents and friends. My mom's voice awakened me from my thoughts, “Have you made your birthday wish yet, sweetie?” “Yes, Mom.” I said. I continued, “I thank my teacher very much for telling you the truth about my performance. Thank you very much for pulling me back when I was confused and degenerated. It was you who gave me hope, support, love and confidence that made me where I am today. I will work harder and do my best in the future.
