Can plants grow on the moon? Here’s the good news. Scientists at the University of Florida have grown plants in soil from the moon.
The moon soil was collected by NASA’s astronauts over 50 years ago. The soil is so valuable that it took the scientists 11 years to get NASA’s agreement to use it. NASA didn’t give them much soil—just 12g. Some of the soil was taken from the top layer (层) of the moon’s surface, and the rest came from deeper layers. The moon soil doesn’t have many nutrients—things that help plants grow. It has a large amount of iron, and is full of tiny pieces of glass.
For their scientific test, the scientists chose a plant called thale cress, which can grow in very little soil. They got the moon soil wet with water mixed with nutrients. Then they added the seeds. To compare, they also planted the seeds in volcanic ash (火山灰).
After two days of watering, the scientists saw green plants in every soil layer. “All of the seeds grew. I can’t tell you how surprised we were!” said one of the scientists. As time went on, the scientists began to notice differences. The plants grown in the moon soil weren’t as healthy as those grown in volcanic ash. They were smaller and grew more slowly, and some leaves turned red. The plants grown in the top layer moon soil did the worst of all.
Anyway, showing that plants can grow on the moon is a really good starting point. It is the first step toward growing plants for food and O₂on the moon one day. By studying changes in the DNA of the plants grown in the moon soil, scientists may find new ways to help plants grow better on the moon. It is actually a huge step in achieving humans’ long-time dream of living on the moon.
44. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. The astronauts collected the moon soil 11 years ago.
B. It was difficult for the scientists to get the moon soil.
C. NASA gave most of the moon soil to the scientists.
D. Many nutrients can be found in the soil from the moon.
45. Why did the scientists choose thale cress?
A. It is a common plant. B. It can live for a long time.
C. It can grow without water. D. It doesn’t need too much soil.
46. How was the growth of the plants (from good to poor)?
a. the plants grown in volcanic ash
b. the plants grown in the top layer moon soil
c. the plants grown in the deeper layer moon soil
A. c>a>b. B. a>b>c. C. a>c>b. D. b>a>c.

Most people have a favorite color, but how people feel about colors depends on their culture. This can be very important to people in business that sell products all over the world. They might choose a color because they think it is exciting or attractive, but in another country that same color could be used to give a sad message. Look at these examples:
If you ask someone in Britain what the right color is for a bride to wear, the answer will be white. In China and other eastern countries, brides often wear red because the color red is a sign of good luck, happiness and prosperity (繁荣). ________. In Britain, red is used as a sign of danger. Road signs and warning labels (标签) are often in red. In eastern cultures, the color red does not mean you have to be careful.
In Egypt, yellow is the color linked to death. In Britain and other western cultures, death and funerals (葬礼) are usually linked to the color black, but in many eastern countries, white is the color most people connect with death and funerals.
Many people like the color orange because it is bright and exciting. Some advertisers will not use orange in their advertisements because they believe it suggests that the products are cheap and perhaps not of good quality.
In a word, colors have different meanings in different cultures. We should learn to choose the proper color in some special situation.

A. B. C. D.
48. In which country does the color yellow mean death?

D. To explain different cultures have different meanings to the same color.
50. Which of the following can be put back into the blank “________”?

When Jan walks into the kitchen, her mum is sitting at the table, reading a book and drinking a cup of tea. Jan goes to the fridge and looks inside for a drink. It’s a choice between a cola and an apple juice. The apple juice wins.
“Don’t eat anything,” mum says. “Dinner’s in 20 minutes.”
Jan doesn’t answer. She takes a glass from the cupboard above the sink, sits down opposite mum, and pours the apple juice into the glass.
“Mum?”
“Uh-huh?”
Mum doesn’t look up from her book. It’s always the same. When she starts reading a book she can’t stop until she reaches the end. It makes dad mad.
“Can you give me something for my time capsule?”
Mum looks up from her book. Suddenly she’s interested.
“Your what?”
“My time capsule. It’s for a school project.”
“What’s a time capsule?”
Jan can’t believe her mum doesn’t know what a time capsule is. Everyone knows what a time capsule is.
“A time capsule ... you know.”
“No, I don’t know.”
“You put things inside it and then you bury (埋) it in the garden for someone to find in the future. That’s why it’s called a time capsule.”
Mum puts down her book. She drinks some more tea and looks across at Jan.
“What do you put inside?”
“Things. Personal things ... a letter ... things related to now ... this year ... a diary or a newspaper, for example.” Jan looks at the apple juice. “Or a bottle of apple juice. When the person finds the time capsule in the future they can discover things about the past. They can read the newspaper. They can find out what people ate and drank, and they can find out about ... me.”
“How do you know someone is going to find it?”
“I don’t.”
“I see. And this is a school project?”
“Yes. It’s for History. For Mrs. Zinger.”
“And you want me to give you something to put inside the time capsule?” Jan makes a face. It’s a face mum recognizes. It’s the face Jan makes to say mum doesn’t understand. Mum never understands.
“No, mum. You don’t understand. I want something to put the things into. I need a container. Have you got anything? Please?”
“What kind of thing?”
“I don’t know. A box? I need something strong to protect the things inside.”
Mum looks around the room and thinks. Suddenly she has an idea. She goes to one of the cupboards and takes out a large old biscuit tin. “Here it is,” she says, opening the tin and looking inside.

Otters (水獭) are cute water animals. ____56____ In Japan, some “otter cafes” are open for business. People can pay to play with the otters there and to take photos with them. In Indonesia, people go swimming with their pet otters and take “funny” videos. These photos and videos posted online have attracted more people to buy otters as pets.
However, these photos and videos hide the fact that the online trade is doing harm to otters. In the wild, baby otters usually stay with their mothers during their first year of life. According to a report, 70 percent of otters sold online are under a year old. ____57____ When they’re kept as pets by humans, they do not live full, natural lives.
Otters are very social. They live in family groups of up to fifteen in the wild. Keeping an otter as a pet can make it very sad and lonely. ____58____ Their owners’ bathtubs or pools are much smaller than the bodies of water in the wild.
On the other hand, it is not wise to keep otters as pets at home. ____59____ If they’re kept indoors, they will leave a lot of waste around the house. This would make the smell even more unpleasant. Besides, when otters are upset, they will make loud noises and even attack people. If a person is bitten by an otter, he or she needs to go to the hospital immediately.
____60____ Well, one of the main ways is to let more people know that otters should not be kept as pets. We should also keep an eye on online posts about these animals. When photos and videos show baby otters being kept or sold as pets, don’t share them.
A. These animals also need enough space to swim.
B. They have a very special fishy smell.
C. These baby otters have been stolen from their mothers.
D. These baby otters have run away from their mothers.
E. Now more and more people like keeping them as pets.
F. What can we do to stop the otter pet trade?

A person who writes music is known as a composer. A composer thinks of a musical idea and writes it on paper for others to read. Instead of writing words, a composer uses musical notation (记号). Other people can read the notes and play them. When they do, they’re playing music that came from the composer’s imagination.
Beethoven was a famous German composer. He was born in 1770 in Bonn and began learning the piano when he was only four. He also learned to play the violin. Beethoven visited Vienna, which was a very musical city, in 1787. Two other famous composers lived in Vienna at that time. Wolfgang Mozart and Joseph Haydn met Beethoven and gave his music high praise. Beethoven made friends in Vienna and returned there in 1792. He studied music with Haydn and lived in Vienna for the rest of his life.
Beethoven was known as a great pianist, but he wanted to compose his own music. He always seemed to have musical ideas in his head. His notebooks show how hard he worked to get the music just right. He often wrote and then revised his music by scratching it out, so it is possible for us to see how he was thinking about the music.
During the late 1790s, Beethoven began to lose his hearing. At first it was difficult for him to hear people and talk with them. Even when he became completely deaf, he did not stop creating music, however. He heard music in his mind even though he couldn’t hear it with his ears.
Most people have heard of Beethoven’s Symphony (交响乐) No.5, but they may not know he wrote it when he was growing deaf. A symphony is a long piece of music for orchestra (交响乐团). Symphony No.5 starts like this: ta-ta-ta-TUM. Beethoven used this pattern over and over in his symphony. Try saying it aloud two times: ta-ta-ta-TUM, ta-ta-ta-TUM.

46 How was the growth of the plants (from good to poor)?
a. the plants grown in volcanic ash
b. the plants grown in the top layer moon soil
c. the plants grown in the deeper layer moon soil
A. c>a>b. B. a>b>c. C. a>c>b. D. b>a>c.
【答案】44. B 45. D 46. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述了科学家通过实验证明在月球上能够种植植物。

【46题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“The plants grown in the moon soil weren’t as healthy as those grown in volcanic ash. They were smaller and grew more slowly, and some leaves turned red. The plants grown in the top layer moon soil did the worst of all.”可知,在月球土壤中种植的植物不如在火山灰中种植的植物健康,它们较小,生长较慢,有些叶子变红,在顶层月球土壤中种植的植物情况最糟。因此顺序应是a>c>b。故选C。
C

“What kind of thing?”

六、读写结合。
一阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(答案不超过6个单词)每小题2分,计10分

Some Advice on Developing Labor Education in Our School
It’s reported that Labor Education will be included in the education of middle schools and primary schools. I think it’s important. We can learn some life skills and form good habits. Both will help us a lot in the future.
As for how to run the course in our school, I have some ideas. The school can offer classes to teach us how to do the cleaning and grow plants. What’s more, the school can set up some clubs, such as cooking club and paper-cutting club. The school can also hold competitions to see who is the best in making cakes. Such activities will make our school life more colorful and meaningful.
