As a parent of two young children, I sometimes find myself saying less-than-perfect things: “If you spill (洒) that milk every where, you’re not drinking milk for the rest of your life.” “Hold on, Mommy’s on the phone.”(Not really, Mommy is checking her Facebook.)
But at the library, I’m better. When I'm at the library, watching my two kids with heads bent over books, I feel certain I'm getting one thing right. And that thing is, plainly, the library.
It starts with the walk over, when my sons and I gather up the books that are due and head out the door. Nate sits in the pushchair and Clark holds my hand as we cross the street. We talk about what we’re renewing and how many books we’re going to get. “It’s really nice that we live so close to our library,” Clark sometimes remarks.
We started going to the library when Clark was a baby. I knew I wanted books and reading to be ingrained (根深蒂固的) in his life from an early age. I took Clark there at least every three weeks (when the books were due) starting when he was around six months old. He came to know our librarians — Bev and Blossom are his favorites. He began to practice writing his name so that he'd qualify for his own library card.
As soon as we arrive, I feel like we’re at our happy place. You may think it’s our happy place because my children suddenly become quiet-let me assure you that's not it. I frequently have to remind excited Clark and Nate to whisper. I’m happy because at the library I know I’m doing something good for them-without the cajoling (劝诱) that good-for-them things often require. The added bonus for a book lover like me is the flood of joy that comes when I see either of my kids turning the pages of a book they pulled off the shelves themselves.

The idea of robot rulers, friends and lovers has been a topic of science fiction novels for years.
But according to one mathematical model of how our brains create consciousness, emotional machines will never exist.
This is because computers can’t handle any process that completely integrates (整合) information, so they cannot be conscious or feel, one expert says.
A mathematical model for consciousness, developed by Giulio Tononi at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, says that the ability to integrate information is a key feature of consciousness.
He believes that integrated information can’t be broken down into smaller pieces in conscious minds, because the brain contextualizes (将……融入背景) information.
For example, when we see a red circle our brains don’t see the shape as a colorless circle plus a shapeless colored area, New scientist reported. Instead, we see it as a whole — a red circle; we understand the “wider picture”.
It’s easy enough for machines to edit a collection of individual images, but memories are made up of a bank of intertwined (相互交织的) images and experiences and cannot be changed in the same way.
Researchers have used mathematics to show that computers cannot handle the complex processes needed to fit pieces of information together perfectly.
Therefore, if consciousness is based on the integration of lots of pieces of information, computers can't be conscious and can’t experience emotions like humans.
Professor Phil Maguire of the National University of Ireland in Maynooth says that consciousness cannot be created in a physical machine in limited time using limited memory.
“It doesn’t necessarily mean that there is some magic going on in the brain that involves some forces that can’t be explained physically. It is just so complex that it’s beyond our abilities to change it,” he said.
His research may mean that lonely humans will not find love with a robot; they are unlikely to be made their slaves either.
46. Why do experts think emotional machines won’t exist?
A. Machines can’t solve problems.
B. Machines can’t handle information.
C. Machines can’t integrate information.
D. Machines can’t communicate with people.
47. The example mentioned in Paragraph 6 is used to show .
A. machines cannot feel
B. the brain has consciousness
C. machines can recognize shapes and colors
D. the brain can contextualize information
48. The underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refers to .
A. humans B. robots C. machines D. computers
49. It can be learned from the text that .
A. machines can edit intertwined images
B. the idea of robot lovers won’t come true
C. robots can fit pieces of information together perfectly
D. computers can experience emotions like humans one day
50. What would be the best title for the text?
A. How robots work.
B. What will robots be like in the future?
C. Will robots become peoples friends?
D. Robots will never have feelings.
五、阅读表达:(每题2分,共10分)

This week, 36 Austin-area middle schoolers suited up for a free summer camp that teaches girls about construction.
Camp NAWIC created by the Austin Chapter (地方分会) of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) provides a week of hands-on learning for young girls, encouraging them to make their mark in the male-dominated (男性为主的) construction industry.
“We wanted something that was going to be very hands-on, and a true learning experience,” said Jolsna Thomas, president of The Rosendin Foundation and co-chair for the camp network. “That way, the girls would understand how to work with tools, understand the reasoning behind certain things, and actually work with their tools and build something and be proud of it.”
First-year attendees learn how to use power tools to build planters, lamps, and dog houses for donation to Austin Animal Center. They’ll each receive a tool bag filled with tools when they graduate at the end of the week.
Even if the girls don’t decide to go into the industry one day, when it’s all set and done, they’ll at least come away with plenty of new skills.
“Whether it’s fixing a stop in the drain of a sink (水槽排水孔) , or a problem with a shower and working out where the problem is and how to repair it, it’s a type of practicality that's going to be helpful for all of our campers throughout their life,” said Thomas.
Madelin Escamilla, a 14-year-old second-year camper, said that she decided to come back this year because she’s interested in engineering. She said that using tools is "one of the favorite things" at the camp.
“I think everybody should experience this, because. I know a lot of girls don’t get to learn how to use tools,” Escamilla said.
Other NAWIC chapters in cities throughout the country host similar summer camps for girls. The Austin camp is the only Camp NAWIC in Texas.

C
【答案】46. C 47. D 48. B 49. B 50. D
根据第三段“This is because computers can’t handle any process that completely integrates (整合) information, so they cannot be conscious or feel, one expert says.(一位专家说,这是因为计算机无法处理任何完全整合信息的过程,所以它们不可能有意识或有感觉)”可知,专家认为情感机器不会存在是因为机器不能整合信息。故选C。
【47题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“He believes that integrated information can’t be broken down into smaller pieces in conscious minds, because the brain contextualizes (将……融入背景) information.(他认为,在有意识的思维中,整合的信息不能被分解成更小的部分,因为大脑会将信息融入背景)”以及第六段“For example, when we see a red circle our brains don’t see the shape as a colorless circle plus a shapeless colored area, New scientist reported. Instead, we see it as a whole — a red circle; we understand the “wider picture”.(例如,据《新科学家》报道,当我们看到一个红色的圆圈时,我们的大脑不会把这个形状看作是一个无色的圆圈加上一个没有形状的彩色区域。相反,我们把它看作一个整体——一个红色的圆圈;我们理解了 “更广泛的画面”)”可知,这个例子是用来说明大脑可以将信息融入背景。故选D。
【48题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“His research may mean that lonely humans will not find love with a robot; they are unlikely to be made their slaves either.(他的研究可能意味着孤独的人类不会在机器人身上找到爱情;它们也不太可能成为人类的奴隶)”可知,they指代的是前文提到的“robot(机器人)”,即机器人不太可能成为人类的奴隶。故选B。
【49题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“His research may mean that lonely humans will not find love with a robot; they are unlikely to be made their slaves either.(他的研究可能意味着孤独的人类不会在机器人身上找到爱情;它们也不太可能成为人类的奴隶)”可知,机器人恋人的想法不会实现。
D 选项“Robots will never have feelings.(机器人永远不会有感情)”适合作文章最好的标题。故选D。
五、阅读表达:(每题2分,共10分)
阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

They’ll each receive a tool bag filled with tools when they graduate at the end of the week.(第一年参加的人学习如何使用电动工具制作花盆、灯具和狗屋,以捐赠给奥斯汀动物中心。在周末结业时,她们每人将收到一个装满工具的工具包)”可知,第一年的营员在完成营地活动后会得到一个装满工具的工具包。故答案为A tool bag filled with tools.

考查细节理解。根据倒数第四段“Madelin Escamilla, a 14-year-old second-year camper, said that she decided to come back this year because she’s interested in engineering. She said that using tools is "one of the favorite things" at the camp.(14 岁的玛德琳・埃斯卡米拉是第二年参加的营员,她说她今年决定再来是因为她对工程学感兴趣。她说使用工具是营地 “最喜欢的事情之一”)”可知,埃斯卡米拉在营地里喜欢做的事情是使用工具。故答案为Using tools.

【答案】Dear Chris,
When I read about your battle with your parents over Internet access, I was very concerned. Please know that I empathize with your situation and offer my thoughts and advice here.
I think it’s also important for us to try to understand our parents’ point of view. They may be concerned about the potential negative effects of excessive use of the Internet.
I think the key to solving this problem lies in open communication. Try having a heart-to-heart conversation with your parents and explain to them that the Internet is a valuable tool for you, whether it’s for education, entertainment, or keeping in touch with friends.
Yours,
Li Jin
