Passage11(23-24八年级下·安徽滁州·期中)
On April 8th 2024, millions of Americans put on their special glasses to watch a total solar eclipse (日全食). The picture above shows its full progression (进展).
The total solar eclipse could be seen in North America. A solar eclipse is when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth. As the moon shortly covered the sun on April 8th, cities went into darkness. The temperatures dropped greatly by up to 7°C during totality (全食), reported dogonews.com.
There are five stages in a total solar eclipse:
Partial eclipse begins (1st contact):
The Moon becomes visible over the Sun’s disk. It looks like the Moon has taken a bite out of the Sun.
Total eclipse begins (2nd contact):
The Moon covers the entire disk of the Sun, and people are now within the Moon’s umbra (本影).
Totality and maximum eclipse:
The Moon completely covers the disk of the Sun. Only the Sun’s corona (日冕) is visible. This is the most dramatic stage of a total solar eclipse. At this time, the sky goes dark, temperatures can fall, and birds and animals often go quiet. The midpoint of time of totality is known as the maximum point of the eclipse.
Total eclipse ends (3rd contact):
The Moon starts moving away, and the Sun reappears. Those fortunate enough to be in the Moon’s umbral can see Baily’s beads and the diamond ring effect just after totality ends.
Partial eclipse ends (4th contact):
The eclipse ends as the Moon leaves the Sun’s disk.

Disney has made many cartoon movies. The princesses (公主们) are often girls’ favorites. However, have you noticed that Disney princesses are changing?
In the early Disney cartoon movies, princesses like Snow White, Cinderella are usually good-looking and kind-hearted. But they depend on others to get out of trouble and find happiness. They end up living happily with their princes.
But now more girls know they have to fight for their own happiness. Disney has noticed the change. So the princesses in its newer movies don’t just have good looks.
Merida is a good example. She was a princess and she likes going on adventures. She spends her days practicing archery (射箭), riding her horse and experiencing the world. She loves her family, but she wants to create her own life.
Disney even put up their “new rules for being a modern princess”. The rules include: Care for others; Live healthily; Be honest; Be friendly; Believe in yourself; Try your best; Never give up.

One afternoon, I noticed a woman walking with difficulty on my way home. There was something wrong with her left leg. Some kind drivers stopped their cars and let the woman cross the road first. However, some boys joked about her actions around her. Instead of getting angry, the woman just laughed off their words and said, “A group of lovely children!”
The next day I happened to see the woman again. Suddenly, she fell over. I ran to help her stand up. She thanked me and left.
After a few days, I saw the woman in a supermarket. She bought a bag of rice and then carried it on her back. It wasn’t easy for her to do that because she had trouble with her leg. Her body shook when she moved slowly. I walked to her right away and told her that I could carry the bag to her house. She recognized (认出) me and accepted my help.
After we got to her house, she invited me to have a cup of tea. During conversation, I learnt that the woman’s children worked in other cities so she always solved problems alone in her life. She was glad to meet me. From that day on, I often visited the woman and helped her do some housework.

Passage15(23-24八年级下·安徽合肥·期中)
This is such a heart-warming piece of news in the cold winter. Some days ago, the temperature was only -6℃ in Kaifeng, Henan. Someone ordered 50 cups of warm porridge (粥) through Meituan App and noted “Please give the porridge to those sanitation (环卫) workers who are clearing snow on the road near by and those delivery (递送) men who are delivering food.” When the porridge shop owner received the order, he was moved by the note and provided 60 cups.
The story didn’t end here. As soon as the food delivery man got the big order, he shared it with his workmates so that they could also get paid. Finally, Meituan returned the money to the porridge buyer, Mr. Zhang and gave him a reward of ¥500. Although he had to raise his newly-born baby and pay for his house every month, Mr. Zhang said he would surely continue delivering love.
The kind help also encouraged many other citizens in Kaifeng. This summer, volunteers are sending cool drinks every day.
Similar stories have happened in many other places in China. Outdoor workers in different cities are able to enjoy free and caring help. Lots of “love posts” are providing “coolness” in hot summer and “warmth” in cold winter. Just as a citizen of Kaifeng said, “I feel deeply moved and warm in heart.”

“Zero calories (卡路里) and no weight gain (增加).” We often talk about diet soft drinks like this. But are they really a good choice?
Some people think diet soft drinks are healthier because they don’t have sugar or calories. They think having these drinks can help them lose weight.
Actually, diet soft drinks do have some sugar, although very little. Usually, if there is 0.5 grams of sugar or less in a 100-gram drink, it can be called a diet soft drink. Although they have little sugar, diet soft drinks still taste sweet by using artificial sweeteners (人工甜味剂). They have very few calories.
But when you eat sweet-tasting things like sugar, it hits your brain and makes you want more. Your brain tells your body to prepare itself for more sugar. When you drink a diet soft drink, the brain receives the “sweet signal (信号)”, but no sugar arrives. Since the brain is fooled (被愚弄), it still wants more sweets. So, you may gain weight but not lose if you drink diet soft drinks.

53.Why do our brains feel to be fooled when we drink diet soft drinks? (不超过 10个词)
