Parents are probably the closest people in the world to children, but it’s not always easy to deal with (处理) the parent-child relationship. Now the Internet age brings a new challenge (挑战). Parents and children have different ideas about the use of the Internet. Why does it happen?

For phone users
◆Keep your voice down when you make a phone call in public (公众场合). Shouting on the phone may make others feel uncomfortable.
◆Stop sending messages or playing games with your phone at a dinner or a party. It’s a good time to communicate with your family and friends.
◆Don’t make or answer a call while driving. It is not only very dangerous for both you and your passengers but also against the law (违反法律).
For subway passengers
◆You should wait in line while buying tickets and getting on the subway.
◆You’re not allowed to eat, drink or smoke on the subway train. The smell and noise may trouble others. It’s our duty to keep the train clean and tidy.
◆ You can’t take pets on the train. As we all know, animals may spread diseases (传播疾病) and get the train dirty.
◆ You’d better not lie across the subway seats even if the train isn’t crowded. Offering your seat to someone who needs it is seen as good manners (礼貌).

Communication is a part of life. It is the way of getting information and ideas among people or groups through the use of spoken words, written language, signs, symbols, and so on. It allows us to show our thoughts, feelings, and needs, and to understand the views and experiences of others. Communication helps us build strong relationships. It can even keep us from getting into a fight. Also, it’s a necessary way for us to learn each other and make ourselves better people. Good communication is a useful skill. So how to have it? Let’s take a look.
Timing is important when you want to talk to someone. Think about when the person really wants to listen, and then choose a proper time for both of you. If you need to have a serious talk with a family member, you probably should not start it right before leaving for school. Make sure to leave lots of time for talking.
Where you talk is also important. A good place can help a lot. Oppositely, a bad place can make a mess. The more comfortable the place is, the better your communication will be.
Keep away from something that may cut into your conversation. Don’t forget to turn off your phone before you start talking. Turn off any other electronics (电子产品), too. Noise will only stop your talk. You can go a step further: Put your phone away! This will show the other person that you take it seriously.
Before talking, you’d better plan what you want to say. Organized words make your idea clear. Three main points are sometimes the best. If you do, the listener will always follow you and catch you.
Start out by explaining your goal for the talk. This will help people know about the reason why you start the talk.
As we practice and develop our communication skills, we will find our study, work, even the life will improve.

Wang Le, 14, from Zhejiang:
I think it is a really good way to practice our communication skills by speaking English. If we travel with our parents around the world, we have to talk to others, especially in English. And there are not so many chances for that at school. So I think we should travel like them.
Zhang Qiwen, 14, from Jiangsu:
I will travel with my parents. Why do we study? We go to school to learn more about the world. If we have a better way to learn about it, why don’t we do it? We can see lots of amazing things when we travel around the world with our parents. Having classes at school is boring and useless. I like traveling better.
Zhang Yuxi, 15, from Shanghai:
It is too dangerous to stop studying to travel. Our parents can’t make sure that they know everything. There are lots of dangers in a completely strange environment. We can’t take a risk of putting ourselves in danger. If we do, we’ll be really foolish.
Wang Quan, 14, from Beijing:
I think we have enough time to study at school as well as do some traveling. We need to study at school because it makes sure that we won’t fall behind our peers (同龄人). And we can also travel in the summer or winter holidays. It helps us to broaden our horizon (拓宽视野) and learn things not in books. But I don’t think it is a good idea to stop studying to travel.

Oct.16 is World Food Day. The UN started the day in 1979. It reminds us that we should not waste food and we should help to fight hunger. A number of people in the world still don’t have enough food to eat. The food shortage (短缺) is a big problem all over the world. Now, there are more than 1000 million hungry people in the world according to the UN. Many children go to sleep hungry, and 15 million of them even lose their lives each year because they don’t have enough food. There are several reasons for food shortage. First, there are more natural disasters (灾害). Also, a growing population (人口) makes feeding everyone more difficult. Another big reason is food waste. Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away every day. The average (平均的) person throws away 50kg of food every year. According to the UN, more than one third of all food goes to waste each year. Over 1,300 billion kilograms of food is wasted each year. The food wasted in Europe can feed 200 million people, while in Latin America 300 million a year. So think twice before you throw away food. You’d better order as much food as you can eat at a restaurant. If you can’t eat all, take the rest home. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don’t buy too much. Don’t cook too much. When you throw away food, you are not just wasting the food itself. Resources (资源), such as energy, time and water, are also wasted while growing and cooking. So everyone should know that it is important to save food. Saving food is saving ourselves.

Today, it’s normal for people to know about others, opinions and argue with them on social media (社交媒体) by using phones and computers. This kind of situation is getting more and more common in people’s life.
When some people see an idea that they disagree with, they would like to reply to it at once even without looking up more information about the idea. Most of the time, they may only use the facts they know to write their replies, believing what they write is true. Then they click (点击) “post” and think they win the argument. For this kind of people, they have the name “keyboard man (键盘侠)”.
Most people don’t like it when other people disagree with their ideas and talk about them on the Internet. They think they are right. The more replies they get, the angrier they may be. When they get into these kinds of fights day and night, they are slowly changed.
They may not know how different they will become at first, but they feel terrible after arguing. If they argue often, they may start to enjoy arguing and then end up doing it even more. It’s a dangerous cycle (循环).
But what can they do about the arguments? The best way is to get away from those arguments because they are unnecessary and even useless. And there are much better and more interesting things to do, whether on the Internet or in real life.

The key to being safe during an earthquake is preparation. So an earthquake emergency kit should be something we need to have. According to research, there is a 30% higher chance that you will live through an earthquake if you have the kit. Because your earthquake emergency kit will make sure you have all you need and deal with any injuries until help arrives.
How to build your own earthquake emergency kit? Firstly, choose some ready-to-eat canned (罐头的) meat and enough fresh bottled water. Secondly, choose medicine that will help deal with cuts, burns and injuries. Lastly, bring some useful tools like flashlights, matches, knives and dust masks (防尘面具).
While an earthquake safety kit will be helpful after an earthquake, it is also important to remember the useful life-saving skills below.
First, keep shoes near your bed. The most common injuries from earthquakes come from standing on broken glass. Second, don’t depend on doorways for protection. During an earthquake, get under a table or a desk. Hold on until the shaking stops. Practice “Drop, Cover and Hold On” as the picture shows. Third, discuss with your family what to do, where to meet if you are lost and how you will communicate when an earthquake comes. Last but not least, make sure there is an out-of the-area friend that family members can contact with. Text messages often go through when phone calls won’t work, so don’t give up if you can’t make a call.

Biting could be worrying
Nail biting (咬指甲) can begin at an early age. Up to 45 percent of the teenagers in the UK bite their nails, the BBC reported. There are also many famous nail biters, including American singer Britney Spears. A survey shows that 13.78% of primary school students in China bite nails. It makes our fingers look ugly. It’s dirty. It could hurt a lot. But many people just can’t stop doing it.
There’s nothing wrong with biting nails to keep them tidy. But it could get out of control. Some people bite a nail not because it’s too long, but because they are feeling stressed out, or just have nothing else to do.
The same could happen to skin picking and hair pulling. A normal behavior (行为) could become “pathological” (病态的), as experts say.
In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association labeled (把……列为) nail biting as an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD,强迫症). People with this disorder may wash their hands too many times or have to line up their shoes in a certain way.
These behaviors have a lot in common. OCD is doing something normal and healthy too much, NPR reported. But nail biting is different from other OCD behaviors in at least one way. People with other OCD don’t want to wash their hands over and over again. There is no fun in it. They are just afraid that if they don’t do something, something else that’s very bad will happen to them. But nail biters enjoy it. “When you get the right nail, it feels good,” said Mathews.
But anyway, it’s still a bad habit. So what can we do to stop it? Since most people bite nails as a way of lower stress, finding another way to lower that stress could be useful, suggested Rochelle Torgerson, a doctor at the Mayo Clinic in the US. She said: “They can try playing with their pens.” “Besides, nail biters really want to bite if they find a small imperfect part of the nail”, said Mathews. So always keep your nails in good shape.
61 ·Nail biting begins at an early age.
·45% the teenagers in the UK like biting nails. And 13.78% of primary school students in China bite nails according to a study.
·It makes fingers look ugly.
·It’s dirty and it could hurt a lot.
Reasons·The nail biters feel 62 and stressed out.
·The nail biters try to keep nails tidy and in good shape.
Differences between OCD behaviors and nail biting·Other OCD people have no fun washing their hands many times or lining up the shoes, 63 the nail biters. They just fear something bad will happen.
·The nail biters want to keep their nails in a good shape. So they do it 64 .
Advice·Find some other ways to lower stress. For example, they can try playing with pens 65 biting nails.

Several years ago, a couple left their job and sold everything in their home to travel around the world with their 13-year-old daughter. And the girl left school to travel with her parents. Will you stop studying to travel like the girl? Here are some students’ opinions.

Today, it’s normal for people to know about others, opinions and argue with them on social media (社交媒体) by using phones and computers. This kind of situation is getting more and more common in people’s life.
When some people see an idea that they disagree with, they would like to reply to it at once even without looking up more information about the idea. For this kind of people, they have the name “keyboard man (键盘侠)”.

Several years ago, a couple left their job and sold everything in their home to travel around the world with their 13-year-old daughter. And the girl left school to travel with her parents. Will you stop studying to travel like the girl? Here are some students’ opinions.
We can’t take the risk of putting ourselves in danger. If we do, we’ll be really foolish.
Wang Quan, 14, from Beijing:
I think we have enough time to study at school as well as do some traveling. We need to study at school because it makes sure that we won’t fall behind our peers (同龄人).
