Four Science Research Competitions for High Schoolers
Participating in a science research competition as a high schooler can allow you to explore one of your passions, making you a more competitive candidate during the college admissions process. Here are four science research competitions designed for high schoolers.
Breakthrough Junior Challenge
The Breakthrough Junior Challenge tasks students with creating a short two-minute video, where they explain a complex scientific concept and demonstrate how it works in practice. Awards include a $250,000 college scholarship, and a $50,000 award to a teacher of the winner’s choosing.
Eye on the Future Teen Video Contest
Participants are tasked with creating a video between 30 seconds and three minutes long, either on their own or in teams of up to three members. Winners receive a paid trip to the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair
This competition is the world’s largest international pre-college STEM competition. Students present independent research and compete across 22 kinds for awards ranging from $500 to $75,000. This is not a group-based competition — individual students sign up for local school science fairs before advancing to upper-level competitions.

For a swimmer Peng Huidi with hearing problems, participating in the Chengdu FISU World University Games has been a life-changing experience. Indeed, even though Peng didn’t know it at the time, her journey to the games began in her early childhood in Shandong province.
Her hearing was damaged due to a high fever when she was a 2-year-old, with the hearing loss severely weakening her confidence. She became withdrawn and dared not speak to others. Hoping to bring her out of her shell, Peng’s father took her to the nearest swimming pool. It was there that Peng discovered her passion and her talent was spotted by a coach. Supported by her parents, Peng progressed in swimming while also continuing to study diligently at school. However, balancing her academic and athletic endeavors (努力) proved more challenging when she reached high school. Homework was always followed by pool practice, but with the school and training base over 70 kilometers apart, she admitted the daily commute was tiring.
She has overcome so many difficulties to compete at this level. Coaches have adapted their methods to ensure Peng clearly understands their instructions. Training plans, for instance, are written down for her. During competitions, she cannot hear the starting buzzer (蜂鸣器), so instead she uses a light next to the pool as her signal to start. This means there is usually a delay of between 0.2 and 0.5 seconds in Peng’s dive off the blocks. To close the gap, she needs to train extra hard. Most of our swimmers are hardworking, but the effort that Peng puts in to get here goes way beyond the norm.
Apart from pushing her limits in competition, Peng also approached the Chengdu games as a chance to meet new friends. Swimming makes her a more outgoing person. The 19-year-old plans to continue swimming after graduating, and hopes to go forward as far as possible — in and out of the pool.
24. What can we learn about Peng from the first two paragraphs?
A She is a full-time athlete.
B. She is a untalkative by nature.
C. She suffered a lot from hearing loss.
D. She had no trouble balancing study and sports.
25. What was the biggest problem facing Peng during competitions?
A. Being weaker than others.
B. Not hearing the starting buzzer.
C. Understanding the coaches’ instructions.
D. Balancing her academic and athletic schedules.
26. Which of the following best describes Peng?
A. Patient and intelligent. B. Ambitious and talented.
C. Creative and open-minded. D. Optimistic and determined.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Overcoming Dfficulties: Peng’s Life Story
B. From Silence to Success: Peng’s Swimming Story
C. Lights, Cameras, Action: Peng in the Swimming Pool
D. Balancing Studying and Swimming: Peng’s Secret to Success

Food waste produced from the Clipper Cafe in Shaldon in the United Kingdom used to be sent away to landfill, but they have found a new way to deal with it. This machine breaks down the waste in less than 24 hours — reducing the volume by up to 90% — producing a material that can be put back on the farm. The machine works by using heat and enzymes to reduce the moisture content. It’s hoped it will help the environment.
“Going to landfill is not sustainable. And it’s doing a huge amount of damage to the environment. So, we are addressing this food waste on-site where it’s produced,” said William Bedell, the machine provider. The farm and cafe are part of the same business. Much of the produce for the cafe comes from the farm. And the cafe is now sending back the leftovers. The process is quick, usually taking around 15 hours per load.
Peter French, the cafe and farm owner told the reporter, “It’s become noticeable over the years how much material goes to waste — food waste in the kitchen preparation and leftovers from table is full of nutrient that we really do need on the farm to keep the soil healthy and productive for next year’s crops.”
“It just feels right to be returning that organic matter back to the land that originally produced the food. The compost that comes out is a beautiful light, fluffy material. We will be spreading this back on the land through the spring for this year’s crops. And it’s hoped that that produce will end up back on plates in the cafe soon,” said Peter French.
28. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. The new way. B. The machine. C. The food waste. D. Heat and enzymes.
29. Where does the food waste from the cafe go?
A. Landfill. B. Farm. C. Cafe shop. D. Machine factory.
30. Which best describes the new way to deal with the food waste?
A. Recycling. B. Productive. C. High-cost. D. Time-demanding.
31. What can we infer from what Peter French said?
A. The cafe and farm owner cares more about making money.
B. Food waste should be returned back to the land directly.
C. Kitchen preparation is the main source of food waste.
D. The technology of dealing with food waste has a bright future.
【答案】28. A 29. B 30. A 31. D

The concepts of delayed satisfaction, self-control, and self-regulation are often used interchangeably and inconsistently. The ability to delay an impulse (冲动) for an immediate reward to receive a more favorable reward at a later time is the standard definition of delayed satisfaction.
Studies show that delayed satisfaction is one of the most effective personal characteristics of successful people. People who learn how to manage their need to be satisfied in the moment develop more in their careers, relationships, health, and finances than people who give in to it.
Being able to delay satisfaction isn’t the easiest skill to acquire. It involves feeling dissatisfied, which is why it seems impossible for people who haven’t learned to control their impulses. Choosing to have something now might feel good, but making the effort to have discipline and manage your impulses can result in bigger or better rewards in the future. Over time, delayed satisfaction will improve your self-control and ultimately help you achieve your long-term goals faster.
The Seinfeld Strategy is one of several helpful self-satisfaction techniques you can use to put off satisfaction for longer periods of time. Every day that you delay satisfaction and avoid temptation (诱惑), you cross it off your calendar. After a few days, this creates a chain. This strategy works well for people who enjoy gamification (游戏化). If you find it satisfying to keep the chain going, you’re less likely to give in to temptation.
Do you find yourself going back to your temptations without thinking about it? If this is the case, you can practice mindfulness to become more aware of what you do. When you notice yourself doing something out of habit, stop for a moment. Ask yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing. Take some time to analyze how you’re feeling. Pay attention to the details. Take a moment of mindfulness to interrupt your autopilot every time this happens. The more you practice this, the more you’ll break the habit of going for instant satisfaction.
32. Which of the following best shows delayed satisfaction?
A. Receiving an instant reward after winning.
B. Giving up a hard-gained opportunity.
C. Playing computer games within limited time.
D. Postponing bonuses for better outcomes.
33. Why is delayed satisfaction hard to attain?
A. It can lead to missed opportunities.
B. It’s bad for achieving long-term goals.
C. It’s impossible to resist the inner needs.
D. It’s a comfort to possess something at once.
34. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The complexity of the Seinfeld Strategy.
B. An example of self-discipline techniques.
C. A method of practicing delayed satisfaction.
D. The effectiveness of keeping the chain going.
35. What does the author suggest people do for returning to temptations?
A. Ignore useless details. B. Get rid of old bad habits.
C. Concentrate on true inner wants. D. Cancel temptations from the calendar.
【答案】32. D 33. D 34. C 35. C

第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
I frequently see online videos where a group of girls travel to a destination as friends but leave as enemies. It’s generally assumed that these friendship breakups result from different travel preferences or lack of conflict resolution skills. ___36___ Luckily, there are ways to minimize arguments and ensure your friendships survive your next group trip.
___37___ Regarding accommodations, for instance, you’d rather check into a Youth Hostel than a five-star hotel so that you can spend more on good meals. What need you prioritize should get across to your friends, in which case there’ll be no surprises when you’re trying to pick out an Airbnb or make dinner reservations.
Do your friends prefer a structured itinerary (行程) that starts at 7 a.m., or would they like to rise at their leisure and wing it for the day? Are they down to party until dawn, or do they want to call it a night by 10 p.m.? ___38___ The same goes for boundaries. Better to know what makes them uncomfortable beforehand than have to negotiate mid-trip.
Are you one who rigidly sticks to a travel itinerary and allows zero flexibility? ___39___ I find it helpful to have a loose itinerary shared before the trip. You can always revise your daily schedule, but some structure is key, or else you’re spending half your vacation researching.
Some people need a break to recharge or sleep and others may want to work out or read a book. ___40___ It’s everyone’s vacation, so everyone should get independent periods to use as they wish.
A. It pays to tour with friends.
B. I believe it’s a mixture of both.
C. Don’t forget to block out alone time.

上文“It’s generally assumed that these friendship breakups result from different travel preferences or lack of conflict resolution skills.(人们普遍认为,这些友谊的破裂是由于不同的旅行偏好或缺乏解决冲突的能力)”是描述对于旅行结束后友谊破裂人们普遍认为的原因,B项“我认为这是两者的结合”作者提出自己的看法,B项中“both”指代上文“different travel preferences”和“lack of conflict resolution skills”,故选B。
【37题详解】
根据下文“Regarding accommodations, for instance, you’d rather check into a Youth Hostel than a five-star hotel so that you can spend more on good meals. What need you prioritize should get across to your friends(关于住宿,例如,你宁愿入住青年旅馆而不是五星级酒店,这样你可以花更多的钱在美食上。你优先考虑的需求应该告诉你的朋友)”可知,本段是说要和朋友说清楚预算和需求,D项“坦白你的预算和喜好”适合作为本段主旨句,故选D。
【38题详解】
根据上文“Do your friends prefer a structured itinerary (行程) that starts at 7 a.m., or would they like to rise at their leisure and wing it for the day? Are they down to party until dawn, or do they want to call it a night by 10 p.m.?(你的朋友们是喜欢早上7点开始的有组织的行程,还是喜欢在空闲的时候起床,然后自由地度过一天?他们是准备派对到天亮,还是想在晚上10点前结束?)”可知,此处是讲设定行程的重要性,G项“设定行程预期可以帮助你有效地计划旅行”符合语境,故选G。
【39题详解】
上文“Are you one who rigidly sticks to a travel itinerary and allows zero flexibility?(你是一个严格遵守旅行计划,不允许任何灵活性的人吗?)”提出问题:你是一个严格遵守旅行计划,不允许任何灵活性的人吗?下文“I find it helpful to have a loose itinerary shared before the trip. You can always revise your daily schedule(我发现在旅行前有一个自由的行程安排是很有帮助的。你可以随时修改你的日程安排)”提到自由、灵活的行程安排,和上文“严格遵守计划、不允许任何灵活性”相反,故E项“如果答案是肯定的,你将不得不做出改变”符合语境,E项中的“answer”呼应上文问题,故选E。
【40题详解】
根据下文“It’s everyone’s vacation, so everyone should get independent periods to use as they wish.(这是每个人的假期,所以每个人都应该有自己的假期)”可知,每个人都应该有属于自己的时间,C项“别忘了留出独处的时间”符合语境,故选C。

【答案】范文
Caring Too Much About Others’ Opinions
Many students grapple with the issue of caring deeply about what others think of them. Often, it leads to self-doubt and anxiety, impacting their self-esteem and daily life.
This concern can stem from a strong desire for social acceptance and fear of rejection. Another reason for this sensitivity is the formative stage of identity development during adolescence. Peer influence is also a significant factor, as teenagers often seek validation from their social circle to fit in.
To overcome this challenge, my suggestion is to cultivate self-awareness and self-acceptance. Engaging in activities that build confidence, such as hobbies and sports, can also be beneficial. It’s essential to remember that everyone has unique qualities, and embracing individuality is crucial for personal growth and happiness. Let’s encourage our peers to be true to themselves and not let the opinions of others define their self-worth.
Mood swings
Mood swings are a common psychological challenge among teenagers, characterized by sudden and extreme changes in emotions. The primary reason for mood swings is the hormonal changes that occur during adolescence, which can affect emotional regulation. Additionally, the pressure to perform well academically and socially can contribute to emotional instability.
To manage mood swings my advice is to maintain a balanced lifestyle with regular physical activity, a healthy diet, and adequate sleep. Practicing mindfulness and stress management techniques, such as yoga or meditation, can also help in achieving emotional balance. It’s also important for teenagers to seek support from friends, family, or counselors when they’re feeling overwhelmed.

We moved to Jabalpur and it was to be my first day at the new school. I was hesitant to go because I had no friends there. Besides, my limp (瘸腿) made me mindful. I was worried that my classmates might laugh at me. It would be terrible when they made fun of me. “You are a brave girl. I'm sure your classmates will understand. Now, run along. Daddy will take you to school,” said my mother.
On reaching school, my father took me to the headmaster’s office. Later, I was taken to my class. On the way I noticed some children staring at me and laughing. I was miserable. My limp became more pronounced and I wanted to go home. But with Mother’s words in mind I managed to walk to the class.
The teacher introduced me to the class and said, “Anu, go and sit on that chair in the front row. The girl next to you is Mala.” She was good-looking and I liked her. During lunch break, I asked Mala, “Where do you live?” Mala did not answer. I thought she had not heard me. I was about to repeat my question when Mala began to tell other classmates how she had learnt to swim. I moved closer to her and said, “I also swim.” She just ignored me. I felt abused. What hurt me most was that they went to play basketball during the games periods, saying I could not play.
When I reached home that afternoon, I burst into tears when hearing my mother’s first question “How was your day, Anu?” I told her my classmates didn’t like me and that they didn’t allow me to play basketball with them. Mummy gathered me in her arms. “Now, Anu, don’t cry. Give them a couple of days. Do your work well and be friendly and you’ll see things will work out differently.” Seeing me depressed, she added, “You are a good swimmer. Why don't you go swimming during the games periods? I’ll write a permission letter to your teacher.” At this, I jumped with joy. The next day I took my swimming kit and the letter to school. As soon as I arrived in class, I handed the letter to the teacher, who agreed without hesitation.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
My heart pounded with anticipation as I walked to the pool during the games period. Suddenly, I noticed bubbles in the water. “What could it be?” I wondered. Then, I saw a clump of hair and two hands waving in the water. “A girl is drowning!” I shouted, looking around. Seeing no one else nearby, I jumped into the pool to save her. As soon as we scrambled out of the pool, Mala appeared and looked at me accusingly, “Why did you push her in?”
Looking at angry Mala, I kept silent before the saved girl pointed to me and said, “She saved me.” Mala’s expression shifted from anger to disbelief, and then to gratitude. She must have misunderstood me earlier. “I’m sorry,” Mala said, her voice softening. “I didn’t know you were such a skilled swimmer. Thank you for saving her.” From that moment on, my classmates’ attitude towards me changed. They began to include me in their conversations and games, and I finally felt accepted. My mother’s advice had been correct — all it took was a little patience and courage to reveal my true self.

A. Patient and intelligent. B. Ambitious and talented.
C. Creative and open-minded. D. Optimistic and determined.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?

We moved to Jabalpur and it was to be my first day at the new school. I was hesitant to go because I had no friends there. Besides my limp (瘸腿) made me mindful.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式相应位置作答。
