On numerous drives with my mom through my childhood, she would suddenly pull over the car to examine a flower by the side of the road or rescue a beetle from danger while I, in my late teens and early twenties, sat impatiently in the car.

Though Mother's Day follows Earth Day, for me, they have always been related to each other. My mom has been “green” since she became concerned about the environment. Part of this habit was born of thrift (节俭). Like her mother and her grandmother before her, mom saves glass jars, empty cheese containers and reuses her plastic bags.
Mom creates a kind of harmonious relationship with wildlife in her yard. She knows to pick the apples on her trees a little early to avoid the bears and that if she leaves the bird feeders out at night, it is likely that they will be knocked down by a family of raccoons (浣熊). Spiders that make their way into the house and are caught in juice glasses will be set loose in the garden.

I try to teach my children that looking out for the environment starts with being aware of the environment. On busy streets, we look for dandelions (蒲公英) to fly in the wind; we say hello to neighborhood cats and pick up plastic cups and paper bags. This teaching comes easily, I realize, because I was taught so well by example. Mom didn't need to lecture; she didn't need to beat a drum to change the world. She simply slowed down enough to enjoy living in it and with that joy came mercy and an instinct (直觉) for protection.

I am slowing down and it isn't because of the weight of my nearly forty years on the planet, it is just out of my concern for the planet itself. I've begun to save glass jars and reuse packing envelopes. I pause in my daily tasks to watch the squirrels race each other in the trees above my house.
Last summer, I planted tomatoes in my yard. With the heat of August around me, I enjoyed my tomatoes while sitting on my low wall. I immediately wanted to share with my mom.

I was driving home from my laughter club when I passed a patrol policeman going in the opposite direction. I looked in my rearview mirror (后视镜) and saw him make a quick uturn. I am a Laughter Yoga Teacher. I teach people that laughter is the best medicine for stressful situations, so I decided to practice what I teach. I started laughing, not because it was funny, but because I know that laughter can reduce blood pressure and make people happy. The police officer walked to my car. When I rolled down my window, I was giggling (笑) to myself.
“Did you know you were going at 75 mph in a 55 mph zone?” he shouted. I tried to keep laughing and said “No” with a smile, I looked down and saw that I was going at 65 mph. He responded, “That is still breaking the law. The speed limit is 55.”

I haven't had a ticket in at least 10 years.”
He took away my license and went back to his police car. I could see him writing through my rearview mirror. Soon he came back to my car, handed me back my license, smiled and said, “Slow down, and have a nice day.”

Earth Day was founded in 1970 as a day of education about environmental issues, and Earth Day 2020 occurs on Wednesday, April 22—the holiday's 50th anniversary. The holiday is now a global celebration that's sometimes extended into Earth Week, a full seven days of events focused on green living.
课时作业(九)

By the early 1960s, Americans were becoming aware of the effects of pollution on the environment. Rachael Carson's 1962 bestseller Silent Spring pointed out the dangerous effects of pesticides (杀虫剂) on the American countryside. Later in the decade, a 1969 fire on Cleveland's Cuyahoga River shed light on the problem of chemical waste disposal. Until that time, protecting the planet's natural resources was not part of the national political plan. Only a small portion of the American population was familiar with environmental issues—let alone practiced-recycling.
课时作业(九)

Elected to the US Senate in 1962, Senator (参议员) Gaylord Nelson was determined to convince the federal government that the planet was at risk. In the fall of 1969, Nelson, considered one of the leaders of the modern environmental movement, announced the Earth Day concept at a conference in Seattle and invited the entire nation to get involved. He later recalled: “The response was electric. Telegrams, letters and telephone inquiries poured in from all across the country. The American people finally had an opportunity to express their concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes and air.”

The tiny village of Sundial never seemed to get very cold. In the ten short years of his life, Andy had only ever seen snow on three occasions. Due to the extreme heat this year, the villagers of Sundial were rather surprised when a snowman walked down from the mountains and into their tiny village.
The snowman wore a thick white coat and a large blue hat over his round head. The villagers stared at the man made of snow. “Is he a monster?” They whispered among themselves, afraid that he would attack them. The snowman, however, just wandered into the library, grabbed some books, and began reading.
课时作业(九)

Andy, ever a curious boy, walked up to the snowman. “Why are you wearing such thick clothes? Are you cold?” The snowman shook his head.
“Want to go play?” Andy asked. The snowman nodded and they spent the day running through the woods, playing hideandseek. As the sun set, the snowman waved goodbye to his little friend and left Sundial, passing by Andy's home on his way back to the mountains.
Andy's father, the village head, saw the snowman when he looked out of the window at the setting sun. Cold sweat dripped down his face. The following Sunday, he gave the villagers a very different meeting.
课时作业(九)

The next time the snowman came to the village, the people of Sundial were ready, armed with rocks and torches (火把). The strike was cruel. One of his coal eyes was knocked out, rolling down into the snowfield. As the snowman desperately tried to flee, Andy's father struck him with a little torch, setting his coat on fire. The melting snowman rolled around, struggling to put out the blazing flames. As his melting body extinguished the flames, the snowman fled the village of Sundial.
“Let him go,” Andy's father said. “If he's smart, he won't come back.” He turned around to find his son on his knees, crying. “It's alright, son. He won't bother us again.”

That night, Andy didn't come home but left the village to look for the snowman. He followed the trail of melted snow up into the mountains. As he walked farther, the trail disappeared, fading into the snowfield. Shaking in the biting wind, the poor little boy walked through the icy mountains, searching for his friend, before collapsing from the cold. As he fell into unconsciousness, he felt someone pick him up. Andy opened his eyes with an effort, only to see the snowman carrying him in his wooden arms. “I'm sorry about the others,” Andy whispered, managing a weak smile.

The snowman walked into Sundial once more. Andy's limp body was held in his wooden arms. Wrapped around Andy were the snowman's coat and hat, given to the boy in an attempt to keep him warm. The snowman placed Andy at the feet of the villagers. Andy's father threw down his torch and ran to his boy, looking at the snowman, tears in his eyes, “Thank you.” The snowman walked away without saying a word, never to come back.
