In 1971 a young man who grew up very poor was traveling across the country, trying to make a new start for himself. Along the way he had completely run out of money and was forced to spend the night in his car. This continued until one morning, after a week of sleeping in his car, he walked nervously into a restaurant and ordered a big breakfast.

After eating his first good meal in weeks, he found himself lying to the waiter, telling him he had lost his wallet. The waiter, who was also the owner, walked behind the chair where the young man had been sitting. He bent down, and came up with a $20 bill that looked as if it had fallen on the floor. “Sir, you must have dropped this,” the owner said. The young man couldn't believe his luck! He quickly paid for the breakfast, left a tip, bought gas with the change, and headed West.
On the way out of town, he began to understand what that fellow did. “Maybe nobody dropped the money at all. Maybe that fellow just knew I was in trouble and he helped me in a way that didn't embarrass me. So I just made a promise to help other people if I can.”

Open water swimming
I had only swum in open water a few times, and always in gentle lakes, so I wasn't prepared for how rough Lake Windermere appeared on a cold day. A swimmer told me the water felt colder than it had been measured, and that the water was a bit rough. But I, along with 10,000 others, was about to complete the challenge.
课时作业(八)

Most of the people taking part were doing a onemile race, and 10 races were planned over the weekend. There seemed to be a mix of open-water enthusiasts alongside complete beginners—which is precisely the aim of the swims, to get as many people as possible completing their own challenge. The oldest woman competing was 77, taking part in the two-mile race, alongside a man who last year had swum in every one-mile race.
课时作业(八)

I had chosen the third one-mile race of the day. There were over 600 people in my race. We were taken through an acclimatization area, a children's paddling pool-sized part of the lake where we moved in to feel how cold the water was. “Not too bad” was everyone's thought! Then we headed out towards the middle of the lake.
We'd been warned that the first 100 metres would be really rough. However, somewhere near the 750m mark I was still waiting for the calm; it felt more like swimming in the sea than a lake. I tried to focus on my breathing and technique, and just keep going. As I approached the 400m-to-go mark my lower right leg became painful. I recalled overhearing people talking about how they kept swimming through the pain, so I tried. But it didn't work. I began to feel the entire leg tight and painful. I didn't want to stop, so I bent my right knee and just kicked with the left leg.

Finally I saw the finishing post, and I just concentrated on getting there—still one-legged. My finishing time was 38 minutes 25 seconds but that didn't matter—the atmosphere was fantastic and everyone felt a sense of achievement, whatever their time. I'm hooked, and want to give it another go. I've already signed up for my next open-water swim.

Three simple keys to success
Being successful means different things to different people. __1__ My point is, the specifics involved in finding success can vary greatly, depending on your goal.
There are three basic components necessary for finding success, regardless of the specifics of your pursuit. And, since the desire for ownership is the driving force behind acquisition, I'll use the word OWN as my simple three-item method for success:
课时作业(八)

1.O—Opportunity: One of the most important components in finding success is being able to identify opportunity. It is to success what wind is to sailing. __2__ Identifying opportunity is the first step: awareness sets your sails for success while your motivation provides the wind.
2.W—Wisdom: By definition, wisdom is the accurate application of knowledge. __3__ It requires clear understanding, great insight (洞察力) and good judgement. Once opportunity is identified, you must use all your inner resources to seize it and make the most of it. __4__ Finding success when opportunity presents itself often means reaching out for help in areas where you have weakness or lack of knowledge.

A.It takes a lot of time, effort and determination to succeed.
B.Besides, wisdom means knowing your limitations.
C.But wisdom involves more than just knowing.
D.You simply can't have one without the other.

what life is all about, and what it is for. Seeking material success
is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around the world.
They feel that the long-hour work culture to make more money
to buy more things is eating up their lives, leaving them very
little time or energy for family or hobbies. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them.
课时作业(九)

Six percent of the workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year. One couple who downshifted are Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she worked for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs, leaving their two children with a nanny. Nearly twice a month Daniel had to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.
课时作业(九)

Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. “I always wanted to have one here,” says Daniel, “and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It's taken some time getting used to, but it's been worth it. We have to think twice now about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However, I think it's made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.”

Liz, however, is not quite sure. “I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours. I'm not really a country girl, but I suppose I'm gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.”

Just a few months earlier, I would never have pictured myself acting in a play in front of two hundred people. “Not for a million dollars,” I would have said. But when the time came, I got up on stage and faced one of my greatest fears—and discovered I could do more than I ever gave myself credit (认可) for. I found a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear.
If not for my teacher, Mrs Sather, I might never have found that opportunity.

In the first and second grade, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn't in my personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone well. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people's conversations. I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories, I was never shy.

My teacher, Mrs Sather, always encouraged me to write more. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with both hands. I think she was one of the first people to see my inner strength. One day, she announced that our class was going to perform a play she had written. “I'll begin to cast (挑选演员) everyone tomorrow,” she said. “I need someone who is not afraid to be on stage in front of a lot of people to play the lead part of Dorothy. Anybody want to try?” A few excited hands shot up—mine, of course, was not one of them—and Mrs Sather smiled. “We'll talk more about it tomorrow,” she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom.

When I was loading up my backpack, Mrs Sather asked me to go to her. Mrs Sather stared into my eyes as if seeing my innerself locked away inside. “I would love you to give this a try for me. But if you really don't want to, I won't make you. It is your choice.” Mrs Sather wanted me in this role. She shocked me, for I was always a shy person, not even dare to speak loud in public.

Hearing Mrs Sather's words, I realized it was time to make a change. I decided to throw off my shy cloak. I wanted to prove that I also could do something good in public. After seconds of hesitation, I nodded my head confidently saying “Mrs Sather I want to, no, I am determined to play the role. And I will try my best to perform it well.” Looking at me with a big smile on face, Mrs Sather said “I believe in you. If you met some problem, you can turn to me.” “Thank you!” I left her office happily.
