They end up in waterways, harm sea animals, and break down into microplastics. Quantities of places have passed plasticstraw bans as a way to start handling the global plastic waste problem. Straw materials: advantages and disadvantages 1.Metal Made of stainless steel, aluminum, or even titanium, metal straws have become popular. They draw some criticism for having a metallic taste and conducting heat from a hot drink, but they're strong and can be reused. 2.Paper Paper drinking straws, which date from the late 1,800s, often absorb liquid over time and can leave a taste or fibers in drinks. They're the most popular throwaway choice in places with plasticstraw bans. 3.Glass Though glass straws may be more breakable and thus less portable than reusable straws of other materials, they hold up well to washing and reuse. Some straws are made to look artistic, with colors and blownglass designs. 4.Bamboo This natural material can be sustainably produced and is a plantbased replacement of plastic straws. Bamboo straws are easily disposed of and turned into fertilizer. They are reusable but can be hard to clean completely and may absorb flavors. 21.What is the major problem with plastic straws? A.Function. B.Flavor. C.Weight. D.Pollution. 根据第一段最后两句“They end up in waterways ... the global plastic waste problem.(它们最终进入水道,危害海洋动物,并分解成微小的塑料颗粒。许多地方已经对使用塑料吸管发布了禁令,以此作为开始处理全球塑料垃圾问题的一种方式。)”可推知,塑料吸管产生的主要问题是它们会带来污染。故选D。 22.Which of the following belongs to singleuse straws? A.Metal straw. B.Paper straw. C.Glass straw. D.Bamboo straw. 根据Paper部分中的“They're the most popular throwaway choice in places with plasticstraw bans.” B。 23.What is the advantage of the bamboo straw? A.It can become fertilizer. B.It is easy to clean. C.It is portable and bendable. D.It has different designs. 根据最后一段中的“Bamboo straws are easily disposed of and turned into fertilizer.” A。 B I wanted to be a journalist when I was 12 years old. I used to sit in front of the TV in my family's living room, imitating what the presenters said on the morning shows. I knew one day I would move to New York City to work in television. So when I got a job at one of the three big networks in New York at the age of 24, I was elated. This was where I had always wanted to be. I spent the next 12 years in a variety of roles at the same company. I had the perfect arrangement that most people thought—a job for life. “You're so lucky” was what I heard over and over again. And I was. But I also started to notice cracks (裂缝) in the media world I had come to love so much. A new kind of competition cropped up in the form of social media and new digital media. News was changing. I knew I couldn't stay where I was; I must accept the change and be part of creating it. When I told my colleagues that I was thinking about leaving the network and going to work at an online startup, I got a lot of crazy looks. “Why would you make such a risky move?” “What if it fails?” “You can't be seriously considering this.” I didn't listen to their advice because I knew not every good experience is defined (定义) by success or failure. Sometimes it's about running the risk pushing the limits and having faith in an idea. What would the world be like today if we only acted when we could see the outcome? Our new online company, Huffpost Live, has been on the air for several months and is doing amazingly well. I didn't listen when people told me to take the safe route. I'm proud that I didn't take the advice of the socalled experts and chose to make the change. 24.What does the underlined word “elated” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Surprised. B.Worried. C.Excited. D.Confident. 根据画线词下文“This was where I had always wanted to be.” C。 25.Why did the author leave her previous job? A.The boredom in the media industry. B.The rapid development of new media. C.The bad relationship with her colleagues. D.The large amount of work in the company. 根据第三段中的“A new kind of competition ... accept the change and be part of creating it. (一种新的竞争以社交媒体和新的数字媒体的形式出现。新闻正在发生改变。我知道我不能待在原地,我必须接受改变,参与创造改变。)”可知,作者离开她以前的工作是因为新媒体的快速发展。故选B。 26.What can we infer about the author? A.She had no experience of failure. B.She didn't mind what others said. C.She acted after knowing the outcome. D.She had a better understanding of success. 根据第四段第一句“I didn't listen to their advice because I knew not every good experience is defined (定义) by success or failure. (我没有听取他们的建议,因为我知道不是每一次好的经历都是以成功或失败来定义的。)”可推知,作者并不在意别人说什么。故选B。 27.What did the author think of her decision? A.She wasn't sure of that. B.She had taken great risks. C.She felt regret about that. D.She made a right decision. 根据最后一段最后一句“I'm proud that I didn't take the advice of the socalled experts and chose to make the change.(我很自豪我没有采纳所谓专家的建议,而是选择做出改变。)” D。 C Whaling was once a major industry worldwide. And by the 1940s, more than 30,000 whales were being caught every year. Oil from whales was widely used. In order to make possible the orderly development of the global whaling industry, the international Whaling Commission (IWC) was formed in 1946. However, in 1986, the IWC voted (投票) for a ban on whaling. The biggest concern was the huge fall in whale populations across the planet. Indeed many people say the ban came too late and that commercial whaling has already driven many species close to extinction. According to Greenpeace, blue whales are less than 1% of their original number in the Antarctic while Sei Whales and Fin Whales are also listed as “endangered species”. There are many other good reasons to oppose whaling. Whales are extremely intelligent creatures. They have social networks very similar to those of humans, and scientists have recently discovered that whales have brain cells only previously found in humans and great apes (猿). On top of that, whaling is also a cruel industry. Whales are often caught using explosive harpoons (鱼叉). In some cases, when the harpoon doesn't bit its target properly, whales can take minutes or sometimes hours to die. Despite this, some countries continue to hunt whales. And currently Japan hunts more than 1,000 whales a year—all of them part of a supposed “scientific research” programme. Many people argue that this “research” is nothing more than a front of commercial whaling—the meat that is left over after samples are taken is sold. At present, the world is fairly divided on the issue with Iceland, Japan and Norway on the prowhaling side and the US, Australia, New Zealand and the EU on the antiwhaling side. Asked recently how difficult his job was on a scale (等级) of one to ten, Cristian Maquieira, the chairman of the IWC said, “About__a__twelve!” 28.What is the main reason for the IWC, voting for a ban on whaling? A.Many whale species died out. B.Whales are highly intelligent creatures. C.The number of whales dropped sharply. D.Whales suffer great pain when being caught. 根据第二段前两句“However, in 1986, the IWC voted (投票) for a ban on whaling. The biggest concern was the huge fall in whale populations across the planet.(然而,1986年,国际捕鲸委员会投票赞成禁止捕鲸。最大的担忧是全球鲸鱼数量的大幅下降。)”可知,国际捕鲸委员会投票禁止捕鲸的主要原因是鲸鱼的数量急剧减少。故选C。 29.What does the underlined word “oppose” in Paragraph 3 mean? A.Protest. B.Maintain. C.Permit. D.Improve. 根据第二段所讲的“禁止捕鲸的原因”和第三段第一句“There are many other good reasons to oppose whaling.(oppose捕鲸还有许多其他好理由。)” A。 30.Why do some countries continue to hunt whales? A.To ensure food supply. B.To do scientific research. C.To protect other species. D.To make economic profit. 根据第四段最后一句“Many people argue that this ‘research’ is nothing more than a front of commercial whaling—the meat that is left over after samples are taken is sold. (许多人认为,这种‘研究’不过是商业捕鲸的前沿——取样后遗留下来的肉被出售。)”可推知,有些国家继续捕鲸其实是为了经济利益。故选D。 31.What does Cristian Maquieira mean by saying “About a twelve!”? A.The IWC will make great efforts to promote the ban. B.It is rather challenging for the IWC to carry out the ban. C.There is still much room for the IWC to improve its work. D.The IWC is confident of stopping all countries hunting whales. 根据最后一段最后一句“Asked recently how difficult his job was on a scale (等级) of one to ten, Cristian Maquieira, the chairman of the IWC said, ‘About__a__twelve!’” B。 D In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity (繁荣). Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people. I have taught many children who held the belief that their selfworth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often lifeanddeath affairs. In their singleminded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten. However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which only values the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the__most__vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's selfrespect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to disappear can we discover a new meaning in competition. 32.Why do some people favor competition according to the passage? A.It pushes society forward. B.It builds up a sense of duty. C.It improves personal abilities. D.It encourages individual efforts. 根据第一段第二句“Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity (繁荣).” A。 33.The underlined phrase “the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 refers to “________”. A.those who try their best to win B.those who value competition most highly C.those who are against competition most strongly D.those who rely on others most for success 答案:C 解析:指代判断题。 C。 34.What is the similar belief of the true competition and those with a “desire to fail”? A.One's worth lies in his performance compared with others. B.One's success in competition needs great efforts. C.One's achievement is determined by his particular skills. D.One's success is based on how hard he has tried. 根据最后一段倒数第三句“Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's selfrespect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others.” A。 35.Which point of view may the author agree to? A.Every effort should be paid back. B.Competition should be encouraged. C.Winning should be a lifeanddeath matter. D.Fear of failure should be removed in competition. 根据最后一段第七句“What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot.” Communication is the sharing of information or ideas. Last week was our Environmental Protection Week. Let me introduce something about it to you. First, we went to school by bike or on foot instead of taking a car, which could help reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Besides, we were encouraged to save paper. So we wrote on both sides of paper. In addition, our school stores used reusable shopping bags rather than plastic bags. All of these actions have a great effect on students. Now, more and more students are willing to protect environment through small actions in daily life. I'm looking forward to your reply. A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people hardly visited. The house was very old and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out he would not say hello to neighbors or passers by but simply just glare (瞪眼看) at them. The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy's parents told him to stay away from the house. A lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same from their parents. As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want?” The old man said. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota (份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines. “Uh, sir, I am selling these magazines and I was wondering if you would like to buy one.” The old man just stared at the boy. The boy could see inside the old man's house and saw that he had dog figurines (小狗雕像) on the wall. “Do you collect dogs?” the little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here. They are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul. “Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No, boy, I don't need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.” The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the big house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family. The boy headed back down to the old man's house with the figurine. From that day on something changed inside the old man. [精彩范文] The boy headed back down to the old man's house with the figurine. He knocked on the door again and the old man opened the door. “Boy, I told you no magazines.”“No, sir. But I want to give you a gift.” The boy handed him the figurine and the man's face lit up. “This is for you.” The old man was amazed. No one had ever given him such a gift and shown him kindness. From that day on something changed inside the old man. He started coming out of the house and meeting people. He and the boy became friends. The boy even brought his dog to visit him.
