C.They were not called pens and pencils thousands of years ago. A London has become a cycle friendly zone after the launch of a new bike hire scheme. It has been designed to encourage more people to cycle in and around central London. So how does it work? First you have to sign up to the scheme to be sent a key. The key will unlock one of the bikes, which are kept at docking stations in and around central London. You have to pay an access fee for the key and then you pay as you go, for the length of time you use the bike. Transport for London, which runs the scheme, is hoping to have 6,000 bikes and 400 docking stations in place by the end of the year. The new hire system is hoping to ease congestion (拥挤) in London and is expected to create up to 40,000 extra cycle trips a day into the city centre. London Mayor Boris Johnston launched the scheme and said London had been filled with thousands of gleaming machines that will transform the look and feel of our streets and become as commonplace on our roads as black cabs and red buses. However, there have been a few problems since the scheme was launched last Friday. On the first day some people found they couldn't dock their bike properly and their usage of the bike had not registered. Transport for London did admit they had been expecting a few “teething problems” and have said they wouldn't charge for the first day as a “gesture of goodwill”. Some other people have criticized the lack of docking stations and locks for the bikes as well as the price it costs to hire the bicycles. Despite the comments, the greenthinking London Mayor still seems very positive about things, saying, “My campaign for the capital to become the greatest big cycling city in the world has taken a big pedalpowered push forwards.” 21.If you want to hire a bike, in which order will you do? a.pay for the key to a bike b.sign up as a member to get a key c.cycle in and around central London d.pay for the bike according to the time you use it A.b→a→c→d B.b→d→c→a C.d→c→b→a D.d→b→c→a 答案:A 解析:细节理解题。 A。 22.London Mayor Boris Johnston launched the new bike scheme in order to ________. A.reduce the air pollution of the city B.deal with the city's traffic problems C.increase employment opportunities D.encourage the citizens to take exercises 答案:B 解析:细节理解题。根据第三段第二句中的“The new hire system is hoping to ease congestion (拥挤) in London”可知,伦敦开展的自行车租赁项目是为了缓解交通拥堵。故选B。 23.From the passage, we can infer that ________. A.the cycling revolution is not successful B.all the citizens in London support the scheme C.the London Mayor is confident in the scheme D.the scheme will be cancelled because of the problems 答案:C 解析:推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Despite the comments, the greenthinking London Mayor still seems very positive about things”可推知,尽管有不好的评论,但伦敦市长仍对这一环保计划有信心。故选C。 B As our boat moves quickly up and down in a windy icefilled small bay, I try to judge the health condition of the polar bear (北极熊) in front of me. We are in Franz Josef Land, a remote part of Russia between the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean. While offshore bears follow the sea ice, hunting seals (海豹) on ice all year round, bears that live by the sea spend their summers on land and are forced to search for whatever they can find. Relying on lowcalorie meals such as the eggs of nesting seabirds, it is harder for these bears to pack__on__the__pounds. Researchers recently found that offshore bears around the Barents Sea are some of the most polluted animals on Earth. This is a direct consequence of the seals they feed on. Over a period of 14 years' study, Heli Routti from the Norwegian Polar Institute found that offshore female bears were in a better health, having greater body weight, than female bears by the sea, but on average their levels of pollutants called PFASs are 33 percent higher. PFASs are used to make industrial products which are poisonous and degrade (降解) very slowly. These pollutants find their way to the Arctic through air, where they fall in snow and gradually add up in the ice. As the ice melts every summer, the PFASs go into the water, where they enter the food chain. They eventually make their way into the fat that keeps seals warm and from there into the bears that eat them. During my 15 days in Franz Josef Land, I saw five bears, all living by the sea. Each looked relatively healthy. There are signs that these bears are dealing with the globalwarmingcaused ice loss relatively well. “The bears, so far, seem to be handling the sea ice loss,” says Andrew Derocher at the University of Alberta, who worked with Routti on the study. “But I'm sure that's going to change if the speed of ice loss increases sharply in the area.” 24.From the text we can learn polar bears living by the sea ________. A.eat seals on ice all year round B.look for food on land in summer C.become the most polluted animals on Earth D.stay on the ice in summer to avoid hot weather 答案:B 解析:细节理解题。根据第二段第一句中的“bears that live by the sea spend their summers on land and are forced to search for whatever they can find(生活在海边的熊在陆地上度过夏天,被迫寻找他们能找到的任何东西)”可知,生活在海边的北极熊夏天在陆地上寻找食物。故选B。 25.What does the underlined part “pack on the pounds” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Put on weight. B.Move around. C.Fight against pollution. D.Live alone. 根据第二段第二句中的“Relying on lowcalorie meals such as the eggs of nesting seabirds(依赖低热量的食物,如筑巢海鸟的蛋)”可知,画线部分所在句子是指这种情况使得熊体重增加比较难。所以pack on the pounds意为“增加体重”。故选A。 26.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about? A.The rate of PFASs' degradation. B.The effects of PFASs on the environment. C.The process of PFASs' entering polar bears. D.The application of PFASs in modern industry. C。 27.According to Andrew Derocher, what will happen if the sea ice loss increases? A.More pollutants may go into the air. B.It will make no difference to bears. C.The death rate of seals may increase. D.Bears might fail to adapt to the change. 根据最后一段第四句中的“The bears, so far, seem to be handling the sea ice loss(到目前为止,北极熊似乎还能适应海冰的减少)”和最后一句“But I'm sure that's going to change if the speed of ice loss increases sharply in the area.(但我确信,如果该地区的冰融化速度急剧增加,这种情况就会改变。)” D。 C What will our world be like in 2050? There are two features in the growth of world population. First, the annual increase in population in 15 European countries, in the past few years, has been only 300,000. The United Nations estimates (估计) that by 2050, the population of European countries will decrease from the current 0.72 billion to 0.63 billion. Second, the population in developing countries is growing rapidly. By 2050, the population of Africa is expected to reach 1.8 billion, 0.9 billion more than its current population. A recent research report published by the United Nations indicates that it is quite possible that the Earth's temperature is rising well above the previous estimate. The Antarctic ice sheet, which contains 90% of the world's ice, has lost significant mass in the past few years. The discovery comes as a surprise to scientists, who thought that the continent would gain ice this century because of increased snowfall in a warming climate. A research team from the University of Colorado used satellite data to estimate that the ice sheet will lose up to 48 cubic miles by 2050. Africa's rivers face great change that will leave a quarter of the continent severely short of water by the middle of the century, according to a global warming study published today. Even modest decreases in rain in western Africa will see rivers lose as much as 80% of their water and a rise of what the scientists call “water refugees (难民)”. “In those areas where there is already a water shortage, it's going to have a destructive effect,” the study says. “If__you're__already_ _walking__5__km__to__the__nearest__stream,__by__2050,__it's__going__to__mean__walking__30__km__or__moving__your__whole_household_closer_to_the_water_source.” 28.Which of the following situations in 2050 is NOT mentioned in the text? A.Population change. B.Economic decline. C.Global warming. D.Water shortage. B。 29.What surprises the scientists according to Paragraph 2? A.The Antarctic ice sheet has decreased. B.The Earth's temperature is going down. C.Global warming is destroying the Earth. D.Snowfall increases in the Antarctic area. 根据第二段第二、三句“The Antarctic ice sheet, which ... increased snowfall in a warming climate.(占有全世界冰川总量90%的南极洲冰原在过去几年里显著萎缩。对于科学家们来说,这个发现出乎意料,因为他们曾经认为温暖的气候会带来更多降雪,从而在本世纪增加南极洲的总冰量。)”可知,南极冰原的缩小令科学家感到惊讶。故选A。 30.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph stress? A.The ill fate of Africa's rivers. B.The importance of doing exercise. C.The hard life of the African refugees. D.The seriousness of the water problem. D。 31.What was the most possible feeling of the author when he wrote this text? A.Happy. B.Angry. C.Worried. D.Calm. C。 D Steven Stein likes to follow garbage trucks. His strange habit makes sense when you consider that he's an environmental scientist who studies how to reduce litter, including things that fall off garbage trucks as they drive down the road. What is even more interesting is that one of Stein's jobs is defending an industry behind the plastic shopping bags. Americans use more than 100 billion thin film plastic bags every year. So many end up in tree branches or along highways that a growing number of cities do not allow them at checkouts (收银台). The bags are prohibited in some 90 cities in California, including Los Angeles. Eyeing these headwinds,__plasticbag makers are hiring scientists like Stein to make the case that their products are not as bad for the planet as most people assume. Among the bag makers' argument: many cities with bans still allow shoppers to purchase paper bags, which are easily recycled but require more energy to produce and transport. And while plastic bags may be ugly to look at, they represent a small percentage of all garbage on the ground today. The industry has also taken aim at the product that has appeared as its replacement: reusable shopping bags. The stronger a reusable bag is, the longer its life and the more plasticbag use it cancels out. However, longerlasting reusable bags often require more energy to make. One study found that a cotton bag must be used at least 131 times to be better for the planet than plastic. Environmentalists don't dispute (质疑) these points. They hope paper bags will be banned someday too and want shoppers to use the same reusable bags for years. 32.What has Steven Stein been hired to do? A.Help increase grocery sales. B.Recycle the waste material. C.Stop things falling off trucks. D.Argue for the use of plastic bags. 根据第一段中的“one of Stein's jobs is defending an industry behind the plastic shopping bags”和第二段中的“plasticbag makers are hiring scientists like Stein to make the case that their products are not as bad for the planet as most people assume”可知,塑料袋生产商雇用Steven Stein (史蒂文·斯泰因)是为了证明他们的产品并不像大多数人想象的那样对地球有害,为塑料袋的使用进行辩护。故选D。 33.What does the word “headwinds” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.Bans on plastic bags. B.Effects of city development. C.Headaches caused by garbage. D.Plastic bags hung in trees. A。 34.What is a disadvantage of reusable bags according to plasticbag makers? A.They are quite expensive. B.Replacing them can be difficult. C.They are less strong than plastic bags. D.Producing them requires more energy. 根据第四段倒数第二句“However, longerlasting reusable bags often require more energy to make.” D。 35.What is the best title for the text? A.Plastic, Paper or Neither B.Industry, Pollution and Environment C.Recycle or Throw Away D.Garbage Collection and Waste Control 答案:A 解析:标题判断题。 故选A。 Whether you are a professional or an amateur, basketball is the best sport for you. __36__ Here are some of the benefits you can acquire from playing basketball. •Improve your fitness levels. Yours, Hongqi Community [精彩范文] Dear Sir or Madam, I'm writing this letter to call on attention to the community lecture concerning garbage classification. Given that most neighbors fail to classify garbage properly though they really try to, our community will organize this lecture in an attempt to guide this deed. Garbage classification is of great significance. Firstly, not only can it cope with pollution issues effectively but more space originally occupied by wasteland will be spared. Secondly, we can undeniably make a difference by taking advantage of recyclable garbage. To fulfill your obligation to live an ecolife, come and join in the lecture to be given at 3 pm next Sunday on the playground of Hongqi Primary School. Only with combined efforts can we make our neighborhood better. It was in New Hampshire. Cody was an 11yearold boy. Just like other boys, he enjoyed running around the lake, and sometimes picked yellow daisies for his mother's kitchen table along the paths. But the thing he liked best was fishing. He went fishing whenever he had got a chance from the dock (船坞) at his family's cabin on an island in the middle of the lake and he was proud of his fishing skills. On the day before that year's bass (鲈鱼) season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching sunfish and perch with worms. Then he tied on a small silver lure (诱饵) and practised casting. The lure struck the water, stirring up coloured ripples in the sunset, and then silver ripples as the moon rose over the lake. It was an unusually quiet evening. The gentle breeze from the lake was so refreshing. After what seemed a long time, Cody noticed his fishing pole doubled over, and he knew at once that something huge was on the other end. His father watched with admiration as the boy skilfully worked the fish alongside the dock. Finally, he very carefully lifted the exhausted fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass. The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish, gills playing back and forth in the moonlight. The father lit a match and looked at his watch. It was 10 pm—two hours before the season opened. He looked at the bass, then at Cody. “You'll have to put the fish back, son,” he said. “Dad!” cried the boy. “There will be other fish,” said his father gently but firmly. “Not as big as this one,” cried the boy again. Cody looked around. Do we do right when no one is watching? [精彩范文] Cody looked around. No other men were fishing anywhere around the lake. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, the boy could tell by the firmness in his father's voice that the decision was final. He slowly worked the hook out of the lip of the huge bass and lowered it into the black water. The creature swished its body and disappeared. The boy sighed at the loss of such an awesome fish. Do we do right when no one is watching? Do we stop at the red light when the street is empty? Or refuse to trade stocks based on inside information? We would if we were taught to “put the fish back” when we were young. It is a story we will proudly tell our friends and grandchildren. Not about how we took advantage of someone or something, but about how we resisted a big lure when no one was watching and were forever strengthened. Text one, do you have all your meals in the dining hall?
