Last Christmas Eve, Devitt Kane and Eric Ramey, two highway maintenance crewmen with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), spotted a large trash bag on the shoulder of U. S. Highway 2 near Leavenworth. Inside were tennis shoes and toys, coming out of the torn gift wrapping.
Kane and Ramey brought the bag to headquarters, but nobody had reported the gifts missing. The two made a Facebook post, hoping it would land in front of the right eyes — and Christmas morning was only one sleep away.
“I remember being a kid myself,” says Kane, “so it was like, ‘we’ve got to try to get these back to the family.’”
Ten hours later, Kane was wrapping up for the day, and still nothing. He told the night crew about the find and that someone might be in touch. Any claims could be checked by the names of the kids on the gift labels, which he purposely had left out of the post.
Around 9 p.m., WSDOT’s Madi Voie received a call after crewmen tracked down the owner of lost Christmas gifts. Mary Fenner posted on Facebook that her brother, David Carlile, had lost a bag of kids’ gifts. Voie’s co-workers connected the dots and arranged a meeting. Carlile, unaware the bag had fallen from his truck, spent Christmas Eve trying to replace the gifts before meeting Voie near a ski resort on U. S. 2 at midnight to get them back.
“Working holidays and nights is hard. Being away from your family and having to miss out on all that stuff is really tough,” says Voie. “But being able to make someone else’s Christmas better, I felt really rewarded.”
24. What made the WSDOT workers act quickly to find the gift owner?
A. Worrying about the gifts getting lost.
B. Reading a post about the missing gifts.
C. Understanding the gifts’ importance for kids.
D. Wishing to unite with family for Christmas.
25. Why did Kane leave out names in the Facebook post?
A To avoid public attention. B. To confirm rightful ownership.
C. To simplify the checking process. D. To protect the children’s privacy.
26. How did Voie feel after returning the gifts?
A. Relieved to finish their task. B. Upset to work on Christmas.
C. Excited about making a difference. D. Regretful about missing family time.
27. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Torn Gifts: A Highway Mystery B. Found Gifts: A Winter Adventure
C. Christmas Miracle on U. S. Highway 2 D. Christmas Gifts Saved by WSDOT Crew

Indoor vertical (垂直) gardens are gaining popularity among homeowners and restaurants, allowing them to grow microgreens year-round, but new research has identified a major disadvantage: their demands on energy.
A study by researchers from the Marche Polytechnic University and University of South Australia shows that while domestic vertical garden systems can provide fresh, local produce under controlled conditions and with zero food miles, they do chew up energy.
Artificial lights — essential for plant growth — accounted for over half the energy costs in growing a crop of red lettuce, which is much higher than other farms. The ventilation (通风) and irrigation (灌溉) systems also use a lot of energy, consuming 18% and 9% of the total power costs.
Lead author Dr. Gianluca Brunetti says the findings highlight opportunities to improve the technology used in domestic indoor vertical gardens to overcome energy inefficiencies.
“Indoor vertical farming has significant potential to contribute to urban agriculture by growing crops year-round in small spaces,” Dr. Brunetti says. “However, energy consumption, particularly from artificial lighting and ventilation systems, must be carefully managed to ensure these systems are not only viable but also sustainable in the long term.”
The researchers say that while indoor vertical gardens are still in the early stages, they anticipate the market will grow greatly over the next decade, in line with a move towards more sustainable cities.
Vertical farming is seen as a potentially resource-efficient technology that can save water, nutrients, labor and space. It could also produce crops out of season and protect them from pests. Like any rapid innovation, it does come with problems which manufacturers keep secret, while overstating the benefits, the researchers say.
Co-author UniSA Professor Enzo Lombi says switching to LED lighting, enhancing ventilation efficiency, and improving the design of devices could significantly reduce energy consumption. The study also proposes the adoption of energy labeling, similar to that used for other household devices, to help consumers make informed decisions about the sustainability of these devices.
28. What is the main problem of indoor vertical gardens?
A. High initial capital costs. B. Inefficient irrigation systems.
C. Limited availability of crops. D. High energy consumption rates.
29. What does the underlined word “viable” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Popular. B. Necessary. C. Similar. D. Workable.
30. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to vertical farming?
A. Critical. B. Uncertain. C. Objective. D. Conservative.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Energy-saving measures. B. LED lighting benefits.
C. Energy labeling for consumers. D. Design improvement for devices.

The more smart devices such as Amazon Echo that people add to their homes, the less happy they are with the technology, new research shows.
The first in-depth research on satisfaction with smart homes found that people were happiest with the devices if they only had a few of them. It also found that older people were just as happy with the devices as younger ones, and that gender and income made no difference to how satisfied people were.
Three researchers from Newcastle University Business School in England ran an online survey of 457 people in the United States who used smart home technology, and produced the “surprising finding” that the more devices that were used, the less people intended to use them in the future.
Davit Marikyan told the British Academy of Management’s annual conference in Birmingham that: “The possible explanation could be that the first few devices add value to consumers’ life. But they do not want to transform all traditional devices into smart ones, as this may result in difficulties.”
He said there was no significant difference in satisfaction with the technology when comparing older and younger users, men and women, people on higher or lower incomes. Those with larger families tended to be less keen to continue to use the technology, but those with large houses were happier to.
The research carried out was the first of its kind, he said. “A few studies have discussed the use of smart home technology but none of them have conducted experimental tests to determine whether smart homes deliver the promised benefits and in turn whether users intend to continue using the technology.”
“Given the gap in the literature and the practical importance of the promotion of the smart home technology in the market, this study aims to explore the factors that trigger (引发) continuous intention to use this technology.”
32. What does the research find about the use of smart devices?
A. Satisfaction depends on age and gender. B. Fewer devices leads to higher satisfaction.
C. More smart devices are needed in the future. D. People prefer smart devices over traditional ones.
33. How do people feel about having more smart devices?
A. They can add value to customer’s life. B. They might present challenges to life.
C. They may not work well with older devices. D. They will bring much difference to life satisfaction.
34. What factor affects the intention to continue using smart devices?
A. The size of the family. B. The brand of the devices.
C. The age group of users. D. The income level of users.
35. What makes this study unique according to researchers?
A. It focuses on older users’ preferences. B. It explores reasons on smart home tech use.
C. It is the first study on satisfaction with real data. D. It assesses the market appeal of smart home tech.

With spring sports day approaching, my heart sank. I was never good at sports, and the 1000-meter run seemed like a mountain I couldn't climb. Each year, I'd watch my classmates run easily, while I'd struggle, out of breath. But this year, Coach Johnson, with his always-positive attitude, had other plans.
“Take on the challenge,” he’ d say, his eyes shining with a challenge of their own. “Your potential is just waiting to be shown.” His words were like a small push, encouraging me to try something new. So, with a mix of worry and hope, I agreed to give it a try.
Every afternoon, as the sun set, casting long shadows on the track, Coach Johnson was there, his whistle (口哨) clear and loud. He taught me to breathe with my steps, to find a beat that was as much a dance as it was a run. I'd fall, my knees rubbing against the track, but each time, Coach's encouraging nod would have me getting up, my will as strong as the track beneath me.
With each passing day, I found my steps becoming longer and my breath more steady. Coach Johnson's guidance was like a lighthouse, guiding me through the fog of self-doubt. He noticed every small improvement, celebrating the moments when I finished a round without pause or when my breath fell into a steady pattern with my movements.
During moments when I felt close to giving up, Coach would share stories of athletes who had beaten big challenges, their stories creating a strong and colorful cloth of strong spirit that I could get power from.
As the end of the training period neared, I found myself looking forward to the race. The once-distant finish line now seemed within reach. I was ready to face the run, not just to prove it to others, but to prove it to myself that I had the strength to overcome my fears.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

【原文】M: Hello everyone. I’m really proud to be here to talk about my journey since I graduated. When I was getting ready to leave here about eight years ago, I chose to go to college. This wasn’t a typical choice for me, as no one in my family had ever gone to college before.
My only idea of what college was like came from movies. Once I got to college, I spent too much time having fun and not enough time in class. By the end of my second year, my major professor told me I wouldn’t graduate unless I made some big changes. It was only when I joined a graduate program focused on conservation ecology that I felt like I was on the right track.
My work in conservation has given me happiness, thrill and adventure. I’ve conducted research in the faraway mountains of California, had meals with influential politicians and even encountered snakes in Africa. But most importantly, it’s given me a cause greater than myself to stand up for. Looking back, I feel lucky to have chosen college, especially science, which has helped me find myself and achieve freedom. I believe you all can achieve the same.

A. To avoid public attention.
【答案】24. C 25. B 26. C 27. D

推理判断题。根据第三段““I remember being a kid myself,” says Kane, “so it was like, ‘we’ve got to try to get these back to the family.’” (凯恩说:“我还记得自己小时候的样子,所以当时就觉得,‘我们必须尽力把这些东西归还给那家人。’”)”可知,凯恩记得自己小时候的情景,明白这些礼物对孩子和家庭的重要性,所以他们才迅速行动起来寻找礼物的主人。故WSDOT工作人员迅速行动起来寻找礼物主人的原因是他们理解礼物对孩子们的重要性。故选C。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段的“He told the night crew about the find and that someone might be in touch. Any claims could be checked by the names of the kids on the gift labels, which he purposely had left out of the post. (他告诉夜班工作人员这个发现,并且可能会有人联系。任何认领都可以通过礼物标签上孩子们的名字来核实,他特意在帖子中没有提及这些名字)”可知,凯恩在脸书上发帖时故意没有提及礼物标签上孩子们的名字,是为了通过这些名字来确认礼物真正的主人,当有人来认领时可以进行核对,即为了确认合法的所有权。故选B。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Working holidays and nights is hard. Being away from your family and having to miss out on all that stuff is really tough,” says Voie. “But being able to make someone else’ s Christmas better, I felt really rewarded.” (沃伊说:“在假期和晚上工作很辛苦。离开家人,不得不错过所有这些事情真的很难。但能够让别人的圣诞节过得更好,我真的觉得很有成就感。”)”可推知,沃伊在归还礼物后对自己能够产生积极影响感到兴奋。故选C。

Indoor vertical (垂直的) gardens are gaining popularity among homeowners and restaurants, allowing them to grow microgreens year-round, but new research has identified a major disadvantage: their demands on energy.

【答案】32. B 33. B 34. A 35. C

【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“The possible explanation could be that the first few devices add value to consumers’ life. But they do not want to transform all traditional devices into smart ones, as this may result in difficulties.(可能的解释是,最初的几款设备为消费者的生活增加了价值。但他们不想把所有传统设备都变成智能设备,因为这可能会带来困难)”可知,人们认为拥有更多的智能设备可能会给生活带来挑战,故选B。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“Those with larger families tended to be less keen to continue to use the technology, but those with large houses were happier to.(家庭人口较多的人往往不太愿意继续使用这项技术,但拥有大房子的人更愿意继续使用这项技术)”可知,家庭规模影响继续使用智能设备的意愿,故选A。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“A few studies have discussed the use of smart home technology but none of them have conducted experimental tests to determine whether smart homes deliver the promised benefits and in turn whether users intend to continue using the technology.(一些研究讨论了智能家居技术的使用,但没有一项研究进行了实验测试,以确定智能家居是否能带来承诺的好处,以及用户是否打算继续使用这项技术)”可知, 研究人员认为这项研究的独特之处在于它是第一个用真实数据对满意度进行测试的研究,故选C。

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】
The day of the 1000-meter run finally came. The track was a ribbon of red, stretching out before me under the bright sun. My heart was a drum in my chest, pounding out a rhythm of fear and hope. As the starting gun went off, I sprang forward, my feet light on the track. The first round flew by, my legs feeling strong, heart light. But the second round got harder, my steps growing labored, breath shortening. Then, Coach’s encouraging nod appeared in my mind, pushing me on. I found my rhythm, my breath matching my steps. The crowd’s roar was a wave, carrying me towards the finish line. I was not just a participant, but a winner.
In Coach Johnson’s office, I shared my joy. “I did it, Coach!” I said, my voice shaking with pride I’d never felt. He looked up, his eyes twinkling with a smile. “I knew you could,” he replied, his voice full of happiness that matched mine. I thanked him for his belief in me, for the afternoons spent on the track. This journey taught me that with effort and encouragement, I could overcome my fears. It was a lesson that would stay with me, a lesson in perseverance and self-belief that would guide me through life’s challenges. The sun sparkled on the medal hanging around my neck as I took a deep breath, feeling the cool air fill my lungs.

When I was getting ready to leave here about eight years ago, I chose to go to college. This wasn't a typical choice for me, as no one in my family had ever gone to college before. My only idea of what college was like came from movies. Once I got to college, I spent too much time having fun and not enough time in class. By the end of my second year, my major professor told me I wouldn't graduate unless I made some big changes. IT was only when I joined a graduate program focused on conservation ecology that I felt like guy was on the right track. My work and conservation has given me happiness, thrill and adventure. I've conducted research in the far away mountains of california, had meals with influential politicians and even encountered snakes in africa. But most importantly, it's given me a cause greater than myself to stand up for looking back. I feel lucky to have chosen college, especially science, which has helped me find myself and achieve freedom. I believe you all can achieve the same.
