A rural doctor travels miles of unforgiving land by donkey, enduring cold, rain, wind and exhaustion, to visit several dozen families scattered across the highest mountain in the north of Argentina.
Dr. Jorge Fusaro has organized medical tours three times a year for the past four years across Chañi, a sacred mountain, which has extreme temperatures, year-round snowy peaks. Fusaro is not only the only doctor many people see, sometimes he’s the only outsider. Doctors may be the only representatives of the state to reach this mountainous region.
There are no schools, police, or postal services. Fusaro not only treats residents and leaves enough medicine, he also helps them with paperwork, serves as a mail carrier for delivering important documents to relatives in the city, and organizes training sessions, etc.
“Knowing that our medical work gave these communities a better life fills my heart. If we don’t go, no one will,” he reflects. He’s worried that government cuts will make future trips impossible. He’s already had to cancel one trip due to lack of funding.
For some people, his arrival is the first time they’ve seen a doctor. It’s almost noon, in Ovejería, a settlement where only 67-year-old Doña Virginia Cari and her family remain. Fusaro helps her prepare lunch. He chats about her life and chores. “My idea of sharing is essential. Making the most of the short time we spend in the communities and trying to live as they do,” he said. “That way, we understand their efforts and worries, their knee or back pain. If they don’t have a bed and we need to sleep on a sheep’s hide, we do it. This helps us think of medical solutions within their possibilities and daily lives.”
Doña Virginia says it’s important for her and her family to see Fusaro a few times a year. “He brings the medicines we take here for months,” she said. “The work with animals is hard; we’re old, and our bodies ache.”
24. What is described in paragraph 1?
A. The doctor’s daily routine. B. The doctor’s working condition.
C. The doctor’s generosity. D. The doctor’s innovation.

A. Employing advanced medical technology.
B. Providing free medicine to people at all times.
C. Ensuring regular visits offered by other doctors.

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology may soon be a useful tool for doctors. It may help them better understand and treat diseases like breast cancer in ways that were never before possible.
Rishi Rawat teaches AI at the University of Southern California’s (USC) Clinical Science Center in Los Angeles. He is part of a team of scientists who are researching how AI and machine learning can more easily recognize cancerous growths in the breast.
Rawat provides information about cancer cells to a computer. He says, “This data helps the machine learn. You can put the data into machines and they will learn the patterns and the pattern recognition that is important to making decisions.”
David Agus is another USC researcher. He believes that machines are not going to take the place of doctors. He says, “Computers will not treat patients, but they will help make certain decisions and look for things that the human brain can’t recognize by itself.”
Once a confirmed cancerous growth is removed, doctors still have to treat the patient to reduce the risk of cancer returning. The form of treatment depends on the kind of cancer. Currently, researchers take a thin piece of tissue, put it on a small piece of glass and add color to better see the cells. That process could take days or even longer. Scientists say AI can do something better than just count cells. Through machine learning, it can recognize complex patterns, or structures, and learn how the cells are organized. The hope is that machines will soon be able to make a quick identification of cancer that is free of human mistakes.
Agus adds, “All of a sudden, we have the computing power to really do it in real time. We didn’t have the computing power to do this several years ago, but now it’s all changed.”
The USC’s researchers are now only studying breast cancer. But doctors predict AI will one day make a difference in all forms of cancer.
28. What is the key to the learning of AI according to the text?
A. The input of data. B. The categories of machines.
C. Computers’ recognition ability. D. Scientists’ consistent research.
29. What is the main point of the fourth paragraph?
A. Computers will replace doctors in the future.
B. Doctors don’t need any help from machines.
C. Machines can assist doctors in decision-making.
D. David Agus doesn’t believe in the role of machines in medicine.
30. What is the AI’s advantage over traditional methods in cancer identifying?
A. It will cost less money. B. It will become more effective.
C. It will relieve patients’ suffering. D. It will correct personal mistakes.
31. Which word can best describe the technology?
A. Promising. B. Integrated. C. User-friendly. D. Challenging.
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. B 31. A

D
In 2022, campaign group Fashion Revolution Chelsea dye a garden for its Chelsea Flower Show presentation. An ancient craft, natural dyeing is a practice whose time has come again, with hand tie-dyed fashion also making a comeback in recent years.
The revival has been encouraged by Covid lockdowns, “which allowed people to explore the craft at home, says natural-dyeing enthusiast and teacher Susan Dye. It’s unlikely, though, that the practice would have caught on in quite the same way if not for a continually growing discomfort about fashion’s heavy footprint. From carbon emissions to animal cruelty, fashion is under considerable inspection. “Put it this way, 97% of dyes used in the industry are petrochemically (石油化学产品) based,” says sustainable fashion consultant Jackie Andrews, who helped advise the UN Ethical Fashion Initiative. We’ve got net zero targets which mean we’re going to have to remove all those petrochemicals from the manufacturing cycle.
Fashion is a huge polluter. According to the UN Environment Program, the industry is responsible for up to one-fifth of all industrial water pollution—due to the fact that most clothes today are produced in poorer countries where regulation is weak and enforcement weaker. Waste water is dumped directly into rivers and streams, poisoning the land as well as the water sources of people and animals who rely on them.
It’s easy to see why someone who cares about people, planet and animals, as well as clothes, might turn to natural plant dyeing. From the beauty of the raw materials—often wild plants-to the property of only bonding with natural fiber like cotton and linen (亚麻布) from the minor footprint of recycling old clothing that has grayed or faded over time to the vibrant and long-lasting dyeing results, plant dyeing feels like a quiet act of rebellion. This is why, while beginners start with simply changing their clothes’ color, new worlds open. Many of today’s natural dyers grow their own dye plants, run local community workshops, and advocate for change in industrialized fashion systems and beyond.
32. What is the main reason for the growing discomfort mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. The adoption of petrochemical-based dyes
B. The disturbing consequences of the fashion industry.
C. The fashion industry’s focus on luxurious designs.
D. The challenging net zero targets to be achieved.
33. How does the author illustrate Fashion is a huge polluter?
A. By making a comparison. B. By listing numbers
C By giving examples. D. By introducing a new topic
34. What does the underlined phrase a quiet act of rebellion in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. A protest against turning to natural fiber.
B. An objection to recycling old clothing
C. A resistance to vibrant colors in natural dyeing
D. A struggle for a sustainable fashion industry
35. What would be the most suitable title for the passage?
A. The Environmental Impact of Natural Dyeing
B. The Return of Natural Dyeing with Ethical Appeal
C. Fashion Revolution’s Dye Garden Presentation
D. The Petrochemical Dye Industry and Its Challenges
【答案】32. B 33. C 34. D 35. B

【导语】本文为一篇说明文。文章介绍了天然染色工艺的回归。
【32题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“It’s unlikely, though, that the practice would have caught on in quite the same way if not for a continually growing discomfort about fashion’s heavy footprint. From carbon emissions to animal cruelty, fashion is under considerable inspection. (然而,如果不是因为人们对时尚的沉重足迹不断感到不安,这种做法不太可能以同样的方式流行起来。从碳排放到虐待动物,时尚都受到了严格的检查。)”可知,时尚业也存在碳排放到虐待动物问题,所以人们感到不适是因为时尚产业令人不安的后果。故选B。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Fashion is a huge polluter. (时尚是一个巨大的污染者。根据联合国环境规划署的数据,服装业造成的水污染占所有工业水污染的五分之一,原因是如今大多数服装都是在监管薄弱、执法不力的较贫穷国家生产的。废水被直接排入河流和小溪,污染了土地,也污染了赖以生存的人和动物的水源。)”可知,这一段用实际例子来说明时尚是一个巨大的污染源。故选C。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第四段“It’s easy to see why someone who cares about people, planet and animals, as well as clothes, might turn to natural plant dyeing.
根据文章第一段“In 2022, campaign group Fashion Revolution Chelsea dye a garden for its Chelsea Flower Show presentation. An ancient craft, natural dyeing is a practice whose time has come again, with hand tie-dyed fashion also making a comeback in recent years. Lin Fei was a diligent (勤勉的) student, always burying his head in books and earning top grades. His teachers admired his dedication and thirst for knowledge. When he graduated and entered a famous university, he was determined to continue his academic excellence and aimed to secure a scholarship.
At university, Lin Fei encountered a challenging course titled “Advanced Physics”, taught by the strict and respected Professor Wang. On the first day of class, Professor Wang warned the students about the course’s difficulty, causing many to drop the course immediately. Lin Fei, however, wasn’t scared; he believed in his ability to tackle any subject.
Professor Wang was known for his high expectations and his commitment to pushing students to achieve their best. He often said in class, “You alone must set your own standard of excellence,” a sentence that puzzled Lin Fei, as he had always found school to be easy.
The first test arrived, and Lin Fei, overconfident in his abilities, did not prepare as diligently as he should have. He even spent the night before the test watching a movie with friends. The next day, he was shocked to receive a 75. C+, on his test paper. Physics was his strongest subject, and he had never received such a low grade before. He approached Professor Wang, who listened to his arguments and explained that grades were a reflection of effort and understanding.
Realizing that his scholarship was now in jeopardy (处于危险境地), Lin Fei decided to turn things around. He understood that this was his last chance to improve his course grade. He began to study with a newfound determination, spending hours each day understanding the complex concepts that had previously eluded (把……难倒) him. He attended every lecture, completed all assignments diligently, and spent additional hours in the library, going over textbooks and solving problems. As the next test approached, Lin Fei felt very calm. He knew he had tried his best.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
The day after the test, he was excited to find that he had earned an A. He rushed to Professor Wang’s office, eager to share the news. Professor Wang, who seemed to be expecting him, said, “If I had given you the grade you expected initially, you wouldn’t have worked as hard as you did.” Lin Fei was speechless, realizing the wisdom behind Professor Wang’s approach. This experience taught him a valuable lesson about the importance of perseverance and the role of challenges in promoting growth.
Encouraged by this achievement, Lin Fei redoubled his efforts in other courses as well. He became more active in class discussions, often sharing his insights and seeking clarification on challenging topics. His classmates, too, noticed the change and began to approach him for help with their studies. Lin Fei, now a role model of academic excellence, realized that setting one’s own standard of excellence meant always trying to do better than before, regardless of past accomplishments. As the term drew to a close, he was happily awarded the scholarship he had always dreamed of.

C. By giving examples. D. By introducing a new topic
34. What does the underlined phrase a quiet act of rebellion in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. A protest against turning to natural fiber.
B. An objection to recycling old clothing
C. A resistance to vibrant colors in natural dyeing
D. A struggle for a sustainable fashion industry
35. What would be the most suitable title for the passage?
A. The Environmental Impact of Natural Dyeing
B. The Return of Natural Dyeing with Ethical Appeal
C. Fashion Revolution’s Dye Garden Presentation
D. The Petrochemical Dye Industry and Its Challenges
