Anne Sullivan was born on 14 April 1866 in Feeding Hills, Agawam, Massachusetts. Her family lived in extreme poverty. When she was five years old, Sullivan contracted the bacterial eye disease trachoma (沙眼), a painful infection that left her nearly blind. When she was eight, her mother died, and two years later, her father gave up his children as he could not raise them on his own.
Anne was transferred to the Perkins School for the Blind on 7 October 1880. Anne was terribly behind in her education, and the rough manners required to survive in the almshouse (救济院) made it difficult for her to fit in among a student group that was mainly composed of children of the rich. Yet, she soon closed the gap with her classmates with iron-willed determination. Sullivan underwent a series of eye operations that significantly improved her vision. In June 1886, she graduated as the best one of her class.
Sullivan arrived at Helen Keller’s house on March 5, 1887. Sullivan immediately began to tea ch Helen to communicate by spelling words into her hand, starting with“d-o-l-1” for the doll that she had brought Keller as a present. At first, the work was slow and frustrating; Keller had no understanding of connecting objects and words. However, after a month of Sullivan’s constant and patient efforts, there was a breakthrough. As Sullivan spelled the word water in one hand while running cool water over the other, Helen Keller made the connection that the gestures symbolized “water.”
Sullivan’s breakthrough in communicating with Keller came the next month when Helen realized that the motions her teacher was making on the palm of her hand while running cool water over her other hand symbolized the idea of “water.” Keller later recalled, “I stood still, my whole attention fixed upon the motions of her fingers. Suddenly I felt a misty consciousness as of something forgotten — a thrill of returning thought; and somehow the mystery of language was revealed to me.”Having released the genie (精灵) of language out of the bottle, Keller nearly exhausted Sullivan with her zeal to learn the names of the other objects in her world. Within six months under Anne Sullivan’s guidance, Keller learned 575 words.
It was no less a person than Mark Twain who described Anne Sullivan as a Miracle Worker. Sullivan not only conquered the darkness of her own early life but opened the world to a young girl cut off and alone. Anne Sullivan’s resolute spirit should inspire all of us.
4. What can we learn about Sullivan from the first two paragraphs?
A. She was deserted by her father because of her illness.
B. She couldn’t fit in the almshouse due to her bad manners.
C. She was the best student in the Perkins School for the Blind.
D. She went through a rough and tough childhood.
5. What was the biggest problem facing Keller at the start of learning words?
A. She was too frustrated to learn.
B. She was a slow language learner.
C. She could not interact with others.
D. She could not connect objects with words.
6. What can we learn from Keller’s learning process?
A. Interest is the best teacher.
B. A patient teacher is helpful.
C. Persistence is the key to success.
D. A good beginning is half done.
7. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. A Miracle Teacher: Anne Sullivan
B. Sullivan’s Determination to Teach
C. Keller’s Rough Journey of Learning Words
D. An Inspiring Language Learner: Helen Keller

It seems you can ask artificial intelligence (AI) programs anything, and they’ll give you an answer back. So, can they tell jokes? This question was raised when UK comedian Karen Hobbs performed in late June. Instead of the usual jokes she created, Hobbs delivered jokes written by ChatGPT. The process made her nervous.
Hobbs said that when she asked ChatGPT for a joke, what it provided was a man joking about being impatient with his shopping-obsessed girlfriend. Even when she asked to switch to the woman’s perspective, the joke still featured a shopping-obsessed girlfriend, just told from the first-person perspective.
It’s no surprise that many jokes come from a male perspective in online materials, as males dominate the field of comedy. The BBC commented that AI storytelling can only reproduce information that already exists in some form, although it can produce some never-before-seen combinations of ideas.
“One way that AI can tell jokes is to do what any 5-year-old does - repeat a successful joke they have heard or try to make an obvious variation of it,” said Les Carr, a professor of web science.
Nonetheless a good joke in real life can always adjust to the audience’s feedback, which often leads comedians to improvise This, unfortunately, is beyond the current capabilities of AI.
For instance, in improv, there is no space for premeditation (预先策划); the comedian must rely only on their instinctive (直觉的) reaction to the audience.
“A well-done stand-up bit can lead the audience through a funny story all the way to a hilarious punchline (令人捧腹的妙语),” Michael Ryan, a student researching AI’s impact on comedy, explained to the BBC. “The whole time the comedian knew exactly where he or she was going with the joke and brought the audience there.”
However, this could all change. Research is already ongoing with the goal of giving AI a greater understanding of the world around it, which makes the future of AI jokes still uncertain.
8. Why did Karen Hobbs feel nervous when using ChatGPT’s jokes?
A. They were too long and complicated.
B. They were not funny at all.
C. They were stereotypical and lacked originality.
D. They were offensive to her audience.
9. Why do many jokes come from a male perspective in online materials?
A. AI prefers male perspectives. B. Women don’t like telling jokes.
C. Men control the comedy industry. D. Men are more humorous than women.
10. What can be inferred about AI’s ability to tell jokes, according to Professor Les Carr?
A. AI can create completely original jokes.
B. AI can only repeat or slightly modify existing jokes.
C. AI can improvise jokes based on audience feedback.
D. AI can understand the cultural context of jokes perfectly.
11. What does the passage suggest about the future of AI in comedy?
A. AI will never be able to tell jokes effectively.
B. AI may improve but still faces challenges in understanding human context.
C. AI will soon replace human comedians.
D. AI has already mastered the art of improvisation.

Imagine journeying down the highway when you notice your fuel tank running low. Your GPS indicates 10 gas stations. Naturally, you want the cheapest option. You pass the first handful and observe their prices before approaching one with a seemingly good deal. Do you stop, without knowing how sweet the bargains could get up the road? Or do you continue exploring and risk regret for rejecting the bird in hand? How do you decide when to explore further and when to decide on a choice?
As a fascinating recent Big Think article explains in detail, no matter what choice you’ re making, mathematicians claim the 37 percent rule applies. Spend the first 37 percent of your decision-making process gathering information and committing to nothing. After that, choose the next option that comes along that’s better than everything you’ve seen before. This rule gives you the highest probability of making the superior choice.
Applying this precise rule will simplify messy reality. If you’ve given yourself a month to hunt for a most comfortable apartment, the 37 percent rule suggests you spend the first third or so of that surveying the market and making no decisions. If you’re hiring an assistant and plan to interview 10 candidates, let the first three go by. Then choose the next person who beats that first bunch.
What if an absolutely brilliant candidate just happens to be the first one you come across? Following this rule might end up complaining and wondering, “What if?” It is true that matters of the heart aren’t logical, and this rule only maximizes probabilities. It doesn’t guarantee success. So if lightning strikes or the angels sing and you’ re absolutely sure you’ve found the perfect match for you, don’t let inflexible rules stand in the way.
But even if it’s unwise to blindly follow the 37 percent rule in every instance, that doesn’t make it unhelpful. Spending roughly the first third of your decision-making process gathering information can help you resist fear of missing out. Knowing that you should secure the first candidate who beats the options you previously explored can help you gather the courage to make decisions.
12. What does the underlined phrase “the bird in hand” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. A sweeter bargain ahead. B. The first GPS recommendation.
C. The previous cheaper gas station. D. A more suitable route on the journey.
13. Which of the following is an example of the 37 percent rule?
A. Choosing the 1st from 100. B. Choosing the 36th from 100.
C. Choosing the 37th from 100. D. Choosing the 38th from 100.
14. What is the writing purpose of paragraph 4?
A. To offer a reminder. B. To give an example.
C. To prove a conclusion. D. To make an assumption.
15. How does the 37 percent rule benefit us?
A. It boosts our self-confidence. B. It enhances our ability to analyze data.
C. It strengthens our links with the society. D. It improves our decision-making efficiency.

Most people think that procrastination (拖延症) is a negative habit. But people like me who routinely put off doing assignments, are likely to defend our “slower” approach to getting tasks done.
I'm the only procrastination in my family. My parents and sister were all born with the “do it right now” gift. They are always in a rush, as if closely rushed by an invisible deadline. Personally, I prefer a more relaxed pace. When my parents voiced their concern about my tendencies, saying “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today,” “No way!” I responded, confidently presenting my research as a defense. It said people procrastinated when they need to solve a problem or commit to a topic or project. In these cases, delaying a decision can be beneficial. This was because our minds continue to reflect on problems even when we were not actively thinking about them, which could lead to more creative solutions. My findings filled me with satisfaction and pride. My method of getting things done was just as good as my sister’s…or so I thought.
At school we’d been talking about architecture and design. As part of the final assessment my teacher Mr. Smith announced an exciting project that each student would have a month to complete. We were expected to choose our materials, construct a small building and make use of things we had learned in class. Not only would the winners receive extra credit, but the winning constructions would be proudly displayed in the cafeteria. “I have no clue how I could get it done,” my friend Nate sighed in despair. I didn’t say anything. Not because I shared his anxiety but because I was not nervous at all. I loved hands-on projects! Picturing my brilliant work exhibited in the cafeteria, I was fully convinced that I would definitely produce something that could impress everyone. So relaxed was I that I didn’t give it a second thought for weeks.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Before I knew it, I had only one day left for the project.

D 5. D 6. B 7. A

根据第一段的“Her family lived in extreme poverty. When she was five years old, Sullivan contracted the bacterial eye disease trachoma (沙眼), a painful infection that left her nearly blind. When she was eight, her mother died, and two years later, her father gave up his children as he could not raise them on his own.(她的家庭生活在极端贫困之中。五岁时,沙利文感染了细菌性眼病沙眼,这是一种痛苦的感染,使她几乎失明。当她八岁的时候,她的母亲去世了,两年后,她的父亲放弃了他的孩子,因为他无法独自抚养他们)”以及第二段的“Anne was terribly behind in her education, and the rough manners required to survive in the almshouse (救济院) made it difficult for her to fit in among a student group that was mainly composed of children of the rich.(安妮的教育严重落后,在济贫院生存所需的粗鲁举止使她很难融入一个主要由富人子女组成的学生群体)”可知,前两段讲述了Sullivan艰难的童年,包括家庭极度贫困、患了几乎让她失明的沙眼、母亲去世以及被父亲放弃等信息。
根据第三段中的“At first, the work was slow and frustrating; Keller had no understanding of connecting objects and words.(起初,这项工作进展缓慢,令人沮丧;凯勒不懂得把物体和文字联系起来)”可知,起初Keller面临的最大问题是无法将物体与词语相联系。
从Keller的学习过程中,特别是在第三段提到的“However, after a month of Sullivan’s constant and patient efforts, there was a breakthrough. (然而,经过一个月沙利文不断耐心的努力,终于有了突破)”以及第四段“Sullivan’s breakthrough in communicating with Keller came the next month when Helen realized that the motions her teacher was making on the palm of her hand while running cool water over her other hand symbolized the idea of “water.”(第二个月,当海伦意识到老师在她手掌上做的动作象征着“水”的概念时,沙利文在与凯勒交流方面取得了突破)”可知,经过无数的努力,Sullivan老师的手势让Keller理解了“水”的概念。
故选A。

Nonetheless, a good joke in real life can always adjust to the audience’s feedback, which often leads comedians to improvise This, unfortunately, is beyond the current capabilities of AI.
C 9. C 10. B 11. B
根据第二段“Hobbs said that when she asked ChatGPT for a joke, what it provided was a man joking about being impatient with his shopping-obsessed girlfriend. Even when she asked to switch to the woman’s perspective, the joke still featured a shopping-obsessed girlfriend, just told from the first-person perspective. (Hobbs说,当她向ChatGPT索要笑话时,它提供的是一个男人对痴迷购物的女朋友不耐烦的笑话。即使她要求从女性的角度讲述,笑话仍然围绕着一个痴迷购物的女朋友,只是从第一人称的角度讲述)”可知,ChatGPT生成的笑话具有刻板印象且缺乏原创性,这让她感到紧张,故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“It’s no surprise that many jokes come from a male perspective in online materials, as males dominate the field of comedy. (毫不奇怪,网络素材中的许多笑话都来自男性视角,因为男性主导着喜剧领域)”可知,男性在喜剧领域占据主导地位,故选C项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“‘One way that AI can tell jokes is to do what any 5-year-old does - repeat a successful joke they have heard or try to make an obvious variation of it,’ said Les Carr, a professor of web science. (“AI讲笑话的一种方式就像5岁孩子一样——重复他们听过的成功笑话或尝试对其进行明显的改编,”网络科学教授Les Carr说)”可知,AI只能重复或稍微修改现有的笑话,故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“However, this could all change. Research is already ongoing with the goal of giving AI a greater understanding of the world around it, which makes the future of AI jokes still uncertain. (然而,这一切都可能改变。旨在提高AI对周围世界理解的研究正在进行,这使得AI笑话的未来仍然不确定)”可知,AI在喜剧领域的未来可能会有所改进,但仍面临理解人类情境的挑战,故选B项。

A To offer a reminder.
C 13. D 14. A 15. D
根据第一段中“You pass the first handful and observe their prices before approaching one with a seemingly good deal. Do you stop, without knowing how sweet the bargains could get up the road? Or do you continue exploring and risk regret for rejecting the bird in hand? (你路过第一批商品,观察它们的价格,然后接近一个看似很划算的商品。你会在不知道前面可能会有更划算的交易的情况下停下来吗?还是你会继续探索,冒着因拒绝the bird in hand而后悔的风险呢?)”可知,这里指的就是已经路过且看起来价格还可以的那些加油站。由此可知,划线词组the bird in hand指的是之前遇到的相对较便宜的加油站。故填C项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Spend the first 37 percent of your decision-making process gathering information and committing to nothing. After that, choose the next option that comes along that’s better than everything you’ve seen before. (将决策过程的前37%用于收集信息,什么都不做。之后,选择下一个出现的选项,它比你以前见过的一切都要好)”可知,如果总共有100个选项,37%就是37个,也就是先观察前37个选项不做选择,接下来遇到比前面37个都好的那个选项就是要选的,那就是第38个。故选D项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“What if an absolutely brilliant candidate just happens to be the first one you come across? Following this rule might end up complaining and wondering, “What if?” It is true that matters of the heart aren’t logical, and this rule only maximizes probabilities. It doesn’t guarantee success. So if lightning strikes or the angels sing and you’ re absolutely sure you’ve found the perfect match for you, don’t let inflexible rules stand in the way. 故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Spending roughly the first third of your decision-making process gathering information can help you resist fear of missing out. Knowing that you should secure the first candidate who beats the options you previously explored can help you gather the courage to make decisions.

根据空前内容“You know the scene: A child runs downstairs in pajamas to unwrap her holiday presents and sheds joyful tears as she hugs a new puppy rescued from a shelter. The music builds up, hearts double in size and faith in humanity is restored.(你一定见过这样的场景:一个孩子穿着睡衣跑下楼打开节日礼物的包装,抱着一只从收容所救出来的小狗,流下了快乐的眼泪。音乐响起,人心倍增,对人性的信心得以恢复。)”可知,上文描述了收养一只小狗的美好场景。选项E“While it is sweet, giving a living creature as a gift isn’t a light decision.(虽然这很甜蜜,但送一个生物作为礼物并不是一个轻松的决定。)”
根据上文内容“The timing could be a surprise, but the animal should absolutely not be a surprise. The decision should be based on many conversations. Everyone involved should understand the long term consequences, children included.(时机可能会让人感到意外,但动物绝对不应该让人感到意外。这个决定应该建立在多次谈话的基础上。包括儿童在内的所有相关人员都应该了解长期后果。)”可知,在领养动物前,家庭成员都应该了解领养动物的责任所在。选项G“Responsibilities can be assigned to them even before their new pet arrives.(甚至在他们的新宠物到来之前,责任就已经分配给他们了。)”

根据空前“Next, you’ll choose whether to adopt from a shelter or rescue.(接下来,你要选择从收容所收养还是从救援机构收养。)” 而下文“On the other hand, rescues are smaller and funded by donations. They often rely on fosters to house animals.(另一方面,救援机构规模较小,资金来自捐赠。他们经常依靠饲养员来饲养动物。)”介绍的是救援机构的动物。由此可知,空处指的是收容所的情况。选项C“Shelters tend to be larger and quicker to process applications.(收容所往往更大,处理申请的速度也更快。)”
根据下文内容“Applications and their processing times vary and can include tasks like proving that your landlord allows pets. Check to see if applying online is possible. If you’re applying in person, make sure you know what to bring.(申请及其处理时间各不相同,可能包括证明房东允许养宠物之类的任务。检查一下是否可以在网上申请。如果你是亲自申请,确保你知道要带什么。)”可知,本段主要讲述的是我们要申请成为收养人。选项D“Whichever you choose, apply and become approved as an adopter first.(无论你选择哪一种,首先申请并被批准为收养人。)”
根据上文“If you’re worried about the huge responsibility of choosing the pet for your child, you can wrap a leash (牵引绳)or a pet bag as the gift, and then take the future pet owner to the shelter.(如果你担心为孩子选择宠物的责任巨大,你可以用牵引绳或宠物袋作为礼物,然后带未来的宠物主人去收容所。)” F“Involving your child in the selection process adds to the whole experience.(让你的孩子参与到选择过程中会增加整个体验。)”

The heat won’t be here for long.” The sanfu days are a period of time that ___38___ (fall) in summer, somewhere between Minor Heat (in July) and Autumn Equinox (in September). The coldest days, or the sanjiu days, are similar. They cover the 27 days ___39___ (follow) Winter Solstice.

For example, people from the ___41___ (north) part of China are in the habit of eating dumplings on the day of Winter Solstice. And on Start of Autumn, some people treat ___42___ (they) to a big feast, especially of meat, something they call “putting on autumn weight”, or tieqiubiao.
But no matter ___43___ differently people celebrate the 24 solar terms, they have been here for a long time and could last forever.

And a “Global Vision” part can introduce current international affairs and news in English. In terms of tasks, you can be responsible for the English translation and proofreading of all the content, ensuring the language is of high quality. I’ll focus on gathering information from teachers and screening global news. We’ll also jointly decide on the visual style of the public account, choosing appropriate themes and colors.

That taught me a great lesson.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para.1 Before I knew it, I had only one day left for the project. In a panic I hastily and quickly glued together what I pulled out from our recycle bin, my hands shaking with the weight of each hasty decision. The finished result looked miserable. Several of my classmates, including Nate, had created amazingly detailed constructions. They used materials like clay, wood and so on and were highly praised by Mr. Smith. When I saw their models, I felt even more embarrassed about mine. It was obvious that they had put a lot more time into the assignment than I had.
Para.2 That taught me a great lesson. I learnt from that day the importance of deciding on my priorities and budgeting my time. From then on, I tackled things a lot earlier instead of putting things off until tomorrow. As a result, not only did I finish my tasks on time, but also I felt better because I didn’t have to panic at the last minute. At the end of the semester, my work was chosen by Mr Smith on another occasion. Seeing my change, my parents and my sister were so proud of me. It dawned on me that getting things done on time instead of being a procrastinator really counted.
