It was my birthday, and I was celebrating it as I had for years: Watching the annual Perseid meteor shower (流星雨). But this time, as the meteors flashed across the sky, I, a junior girl, began to question. “Could my lifelong love for astronomy be more than a hobby? ”
I grew up in a small town, where even graduating from high school was not a given for many students. But I was driven to pursue my education, and like my best friend’s dad — a pharmacist, one of the few professional role models in my neighborhood, therefore, I chose to major in pharmacy, the science of preparing medicines, at the University of North Carolina.
The university was only a 3. 5-hour drive away, but it felt across the universe. In the weeks since I began my pharmacy degree, I had met people with jobs and PhDs in different branches of science I had never considered — neuroscience, archaeology, and even astrophysics. Their passion and knowledge opened my eyes to worlds I had never imagined. As my birthday and the Perseid meteor shower approached, I was faced with a decision: Should I stick to my long-standing plans or take a step into the unknown?
Eventually, a solar eclipse (日食) helped me make my decision. As the Moon gradually shaded the Sun, the world darkened around me. The stillness of the water, the desperate calls of birds, and the fading sunset deeply moved me. I knew what I had to do. I dropped out to pursue the option I’d previously never imagined.
Facing years of challenges and growth, I worked odd jobs before earning a second degree in physics, starting a PhD in astronomy, and realized that the night sky’s vastness inspired me to overcome doubts and follow my dreams. As I approach the final year of my PhD, I realize that growing up with the night sky gave me a valuable gift. It gave me an insight into life: On the scale of our vast universe, our individual needs, desires, fears, and insecurities shrink to insignificance, bringing humanity together. It liberated me from allowing earthly worries, shame, or self-doubt to stand in the way of pursuing new dreams.
4. What motivated the author to study pharmacy?
A. Her ambition to become a doctor. B. The inspiration of her dad.
C. Her childhood enthusiasm for it. D. The impact of a pharmacist.
5. How did the author’s experience at university shape her?
A. She hold on to her dream. B. She began self-criticism.
C. She decided to quit school. D. She broadened her horizon.
6. What can we learn from the author’s understanding of life?
A. Accepting insecurities helps us handle challenges.
B. Personal problems still matter in the vast universe.
C. It’s vital to pursue dreams despite personal challenges.
D. It is small and unimportant things that mean a lot to us.
7. Which of the following best describes the author?
A. Curious and determined. B. Confident and modest.
C. Caring and knowledgeable. D. Generous and patient.

Hadeda ibises, known as “African alarm clocks” for their loud calls, have long legs and thin beaks (鸟喙) and shiny feathers on their wings. Historically restricted to northeastern South Africa, hadedas have expanded (扩张) their range to many urban (都市) areas.
Various ibises use remote-touch to detect (探测) movements of prey (猎物) in the soil and locate their hidden place. This ability is facilitated by a sensory organ in their beaks, called the bill-tip organ, which developed during the time of the dinosaurs. My recent research confirmed that hadedas have this “sixth sense” and found it is closely tied to soil moisture (湿度) levels.
We conducted sensory tests with hadedas in birdcages. We presented them with boxes of soil containing buried worms, masking any sounds with white noise and mixing dead worms into the soil to remove scent cues (线索). The birds consistently found live worms faster than dead ones, indicating they are able to sense movements of prey and use remote-touch to find them.
Further testing revealed that hadedas found worms more quickly in wetter soils. If the soil was too dry, they lost this ability and had to rely on random searching. These findings suggest that the hadedas’ expansion in South Africa is related to increased artificial watering systems. They require wet soil to use remote-touch effectively, which could explain their absence in dry regions. Droughts (干旱) and heatwaves, expected to worsen with climate change, could threaten their population by making prey detection more challenging.
The study highlights the broader implications for other remote-touch hunting birds, many of which are already endangered. As soil moisture levels decrease, these birds could become more at risk, stressing the importance of considering sensory requirements in conservation efforts.
8. What do we know about hadeda ibises?
A. They are known for shiny feathers. B. They barely see any rise in numbers.
C. They recall images of the dinosaurs. D. They have a specialized sensory organ.
9. Why were white noise and dead worms used in the experiment?
A. To copy natural habitats. B. To get a more reliable result.
C. To calm down the birds. D. To add experimental items.
10. What does the research suggest about the impact of climate change on hadedas?
A. Climate change will decrease their reliance on soil moisture.
B. Rising temperatures could increase their feeding efficiency.
C. Droughts could make it more difficult for them to find prey.
D. Increased rainfall will help them relocate to urbanized areas.
11. What does the text mainly talk about?
A Hadedas’ prey detection in wet soil. B. The specialty of hadedas’ organs.
C. The masters of dryland hunting. D. Hadedas ibises’ urban expansion.
D
Artificial intelligence-powered medical treatment options are on the rise and have the potential to improve diagnostic (诊断) accuracy, but a new study led by University of Arizona Health Sciences researchers found that about 52% of participants would choose a human doctor rather than AI for diagnosis and treatment.
“While many patients appear resistant (抗拒) to the use of AI, accuracy of information, encouragement and a listening patient experience may help increase acceptance,” Marvin Slepian, who led the research, said. “To ensure that the benefits of AI are secured in clinical practice, future research on best methods of physician incorporation and patient decision making is required.”
In this study, participants were placed into settings as mock (模拟) patients and asked whether and under what circumstances they would prefer to have an AI system or a physical doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
In the first phase (阶段), researchers conducted structured interviews with actual patients, testing their reactions to current and future AI technologies. In the second phase, researchers surveyed 2,472 participants across diverse ethnic, racial and socioeconomic groups using a blinded, randomized (随机盲选) survey.
Overall, participants were almost evenly (均匀地) split, with more than 52% choosing human doctors as a preference and about 47% choosing an AI diagnostic method. If study participants were informed that their primary care physician felt AI was superior, the acceptance of AI by study participants on re-questioning increased. This signaled the significance of the human physician in guiding a patient’s decision.
Disease severity did not affect participants’ trust in AI. Compared to white participants, black participants selected AI Jess of ten and Native Americans selected it more often. Older participants were less likely to choose AI. As were those who self-identified as politically conservative (保守的). These findings suggest that differing groups will need specific sensitivity and attention as to informing them about the value and usefulness of AI to enhance diagnoses.
“I really feel this study has the importance for national reach. It will guide many future studies and clinical transitional decisions even now, ” Slepian said. “The onus will be on physicians and others in health care to ensure that information in AI systems is accurate, and to continue to maintain and enhance the accuracy of AI systems as they play an increasing role in the future of health care. ”
12. What can we infer about AI treatment from Para 2?
A. Further research is not a necessity.
B. Its benefits remain to be confirmed.
C. Physician involvement raises patients’ acceptance.
D. It can ensure a good listening patient experience.
13. What may affect participants’ preference for AI treatment according to the research?
A. Their personal backgrounds. B. The questions they were asked.
C. Their sensitivity to AI’s value. D. Their failure to access physicians.
14. What does the underlined word “onus” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Attempt. B. Opinion. C. Effect. D. Responsibility.
15. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. Bridging the Gap; Human Doctors and AI B. The Trust in AI: A Split Among Patients
C. An Important Study: The Future of AI D. Enhancing Diagnostic Accuracy: The Role of AI

I was in my room, feeling unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother” Henry. He had recently been adopted by my parents and I was not in the mood for being on stage with him.
“Kirstie, come here,” my mom called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. “Henry’s book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” She glared at me, something she had never done before Henry came to our home. I hadn’t wet his book on purpose. Raindrops fell from my eyes. To make matters worse, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Henry was stealing my mother’s love. He was ruining my life.
Meanwhile, Henry was nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot (绳结), something he liked to do. Why did a boy like him like doing girly work? It seemed far from manly (男子汉气概).
Soon, it was time to set off to the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me aside and said in a low voice, “It will be Henry’s first time onstage. Be kind to him, honey.” I nodded but sighed (叹气). I hadn’t always found it this difficult to be kind. But since Henry had moved in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. With Henry involved, it didn’t seem so special any more. Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring on my skirt. Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. I could hear the audience laughing. Even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames. However, my hands were full. If only someone could help me out.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

Eventually a solar eclipse (日食) helped me make my decision.

A. Hadedas’ prey detection in wet soil. B. The specialty of hadedas’ organs.
C. The masters of dryland hunting. D. Hadedas ibises’ urban expansion.

A. Bridging the Gap; Human Doctors and AI B. The Trust in AI: A Split Among Patients
C. An Important Study: The Future of AI D. Enhancing Diagnostic Accuracy: The Role of AI

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
After the performance, I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment. He immediately came to my aid. He pulled up my skirt and skillfully tied the drawstring with a beautiful knot. Seeing what Henry did for me, something deep in my mind began to change. It seemed as if my cold heart began to melt slowly and my annoyance at him gradually gave way to guilt. I regretted having treated him as a stranger. While my mind was wandering, our performance time came. It turned out a great success, thunderous applause filling the whole theatre.
After the performance, I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully. “Thanks,” I said with a grateful smile on my face. I had to admit that but for his timely help, I would have been extremely embarrassed. Without his knotting skill, the performance would have been quite different. “KNOT a problem. You are my sister,” he grinned innocently, saying humorously. Surrounded by the cheerful atmosphere, I felt a flood of warmth of a big family. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to have a new person in my corner of the world after all.
