The small town of Stow — once feeling lost without a single high-end coffee spot — finally welcomes its first Starbucks in years. A guy referred to as “Krash the Krumper” is revealed as the mastermind behind Boston’s best college dining hall pizza.
Unless you’re a regular on TikTok, you may have missed these stories. But they were some of the most widely viewed and shared in the New England news market last year — and they were all brought to life by reporter Matt Shearer, WBZ NewsRadio’s unlikely internet star.
Shearer, 37, has amassed millions of views online for the more than 103-year-old station on TikTok and Instagram. His account, @reportermatt, has over 83,000 followers on Instagram, and @wbznewsradio has north of 200,000 on TikTok. Since he started at the station in 2020, Shearer has stood out not only for chasing the odd stories of New England but for finding viral success among the lighter fare that populates social media.
“If you’re not more interesting than the other app, they’re going to switch to that other app.” Shearer said. While he’s not covering everything — viewers would be hard-pressed to find many political or crime-themed videos — Shearer has helped introduce the station to a new, younger audience.
His approach involves traveling to random towns with almost no information, and just chatting with people. And except for the mayor of Leominster, whose down-to-earth nature has kept him in office for more than 30 years, he avoids politicians and executives.
While most newsrooms are struggling to reach audiences on social media, Shearer has shown that traditional journalism can reach and meaningfully engage with people online. “I really do believe that journalism is an art form,” Shearer said. “I want to have an opportunity to be creative and tell these stories without feeling like I’m doing it as an influencer, without feeling like I’m doing it to promote somebody or some business.”
4. Who is the guy referred to as “Krash the Krumper”?
A. A figure reported by Shearer. B. A character created by Shearer.
C. An internet star named Shearer. D. A student who is a fan of Shearer.
5 What can we learn about Shearer?
A. He prioritizes visual appeal.
B. He started WBZ NewsRadio.
C. He is known for his serious reporting.
D. He’s achieved success on social media.
6. What do Shearer’s videos feature?
A. Artistic images. B. Casual interviews.
C. Special promotions. D. Sensitive topics.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. From Airwaves to Digital: A New Journalism
B. Discovering odd headlines @reportermatt
C. From Studios to Screens: A Reporter’s Growth
D. Getting His Story with More Than Just the 5 W’s
C
When an extreme heat wave struck Illinois in June 2022, crop physiologist Katherine Meacham-Hensold hoped her team’s new bioengineered potato variety would survive it — but she was astonished by just how well it thrived. The plant yielded 30 percent more of its large red tubers than a normal, unengineered plant in the same conditions, according to a recent study in Global Change Biology.
Meacham-Hensold and her colleagues at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign had engineered the potato to overcome a major limitation in plant biology: a wasteful, heat-triggered process called photorespiration (光呼吸).
This occurs when RuBisCO, a key photosynthesis enzyme (光合作用酶), accidentally captures oxygen instead of carbon dioxide, creating an unwanted byproduct. This error becomes more frequent at high temperatures, gobbling up energy that would otherwise contribute to growth and potentially reducing crop yields by up to 50 percent.
To solve this problem, the team introduced a new gene that produced a protein capable of breaking down the unwanted by-product inside the cells’ photosynthesis centers. As a result, the plant didn’t need to process or transport the by-product elsewhere. This saved energy, similar to how eating local food saves the energy of trucking it across the country.
The results are exciting, says biochemist Edward Smith of the University of Oxford, although he’d like to see data from future growing seasons.
The new technique could help crops adapt to climate change. Similar strategies have been used previously in rice, but this study is the first to show that it doesn’t cause a decrease in a food crop’s nutritional quality. Meacham-Hensold and her team froze and ground up the tubers to measure their fiber, sugars, protein, calcium, iron, and vitamins.
Next the researchers are working on soybeans and cowpeas; the latter is “a hugely important food-security crop in African countries” Meacham-Hensold says. A high-yield soybean variety with the same genetic change will hit the field this year.
8. How did Meacham-Hensold initially feel when the heat wave hit?
A. Concerned. B. Relieved. C. Astonished. D. Pessimistic.
9. What do the underlined words “gobbling up” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Storing. B. Collecting. C. Releasing. D. Consuming.
10. What is special about the new technique in this study?
A. It improves crops’ natural flavor.
B. It shortens crops’ growing seasons.
C. It preserves crops’ nutritional value.
D. It helps crops adapt to climate change.
11 What is the researchers’ next move regarding the new technique?
A. Apply it to other crops.
B. Promote it among farmers.
C. Evaluate its impact on food security.
D. Study its performance across seasons.

Two years after ChatGPT took the world by storm, generative artificial intelligence seems to have hit a roadblock. The energy costs of building and using bigger models are rocketing, and breakthroughs are getting harder. Fortunately, researchers and entrepreneurs are racing for ways around the limits. Their ingenuity (独创力) will not just transform AI. It will determine which firms dominate and whether investors win.
Large language models have a keen appetite for electricity. By one estimate, the energy used to train OpenAI’s GPT-4 model could have powered 50 American homes for a century. If so, it is hard to see how generative AI could ever become economically workable. This is frightening for investors, for they have bet big on AI.
There is no need to panic. Many other technologies have faced limits and gone on to prosper thanks to human ingenuity. The difficulty of getting people into space led to innovations that are now used on Earth. Already, developments in AI are showing how limits can stimulate creativity. Companies like Meta and Microsoft are developing chips especially for the operations needed to run large language models. Developers are also making changes to AI software. Bigger models that rely on the computational power are giving way to smaller and more specialised systems.
Investors have become used to the idea that among tech companies, the dominant has a natural advantage. For AI, that assumption can no longer be taken for granted. Nvidia sells four-fifths of the world’s AI chips. But other more specialised rivals could well eat into its share. Already Google’s AI processors are the third-most-used in data centres worldwide. OpenAI may have launched the pioneering large language model.
This means that investors are in for a rocky ride. Their bets on today’s leaders look less certain. Nvidia could lose ground to other chipmakers; OpenAI could be replaced. Competition among tech companies is fierce. Few firms yet have a strategy for turning a profit from generative AI. Even if the industry does end up belonging to one winner, it is not clear who that will be.
12. What is a restricting factor for the development of generative artificial intelligence?
A. The influence of ChatGPT.
B. The increase of energy cost.
C. The interference of investors.
D. The dominance of tech companies.
13. Which of the following best summarizes the relationship between Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3?
A. Cause and effect. B. Problem and solution.
C. Evidence and illustration. D. Comparison and contrast.
14. Why does the author mention Google’s AI in paragraph 4?
A. To indicate the failure faced by OpenAI.
B. To illustrate the changes made to AI software.
C. To contradict the assumption held by investors.
D. To confirm the advantage enjoyed by domimant firms.
15. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Investors are losing their bet on AI.
B. AI industry is blessed with chips and talents.
C. A few tech firms are leading the AI universe.
D. A race is on to push AI beyond today’s limits.

____16____. Whether you’re taking yourself across the world or to a coffee shop, you’re breaking outside of your comfort zone. And that grows your capacity to take on other challenges in your daily life. With that in mind, let’s see how to perfect the art of spending time alone.

My wife and I had recently retired and were looking for a dog. A small, old dog. What we ended up with was entirely different.
She was curled up on a mat at the Upland Animal Shelter. My wife saw her first and called out. Long legs unfolded, and a beautiful big dog walked over to my wife. She stuck her nose through and nuzzled (蹭) my wife’s fingers. And that was all it took. Love at first nuzzle.
My wife named her Scout. She was a model pet. Perhaps it was because she had been abandoned that led to her being such a gentle soul. If an animal on TV appeared to be in any kind of distress (痛苦), Scout would make a low distress call, prompting us to quickly change the channel. Her patience toward our two grandchildren, who were terrified of dogs, won them over to the point that they would nap with her.
But it was Scout’s ability to charm a bad-tempered, distant neighbor that convinced my wife and me that we had adopted a truly special dog.
Her name was Imogene Pelt. When we moved into our new home, neighbors warned us to stay away from her. Each day, Ms. Pelt would assume a lordly presence on her front porch (门廊) swing and fix a cold stare on all who dared pass.
I made it a habit to take Scout for walks in the morning and at night. And I avoided Madame Pelt’s territory — until one night when darkness hid her presence on the porch swing, and I dared to cross that forbidden area.
“Who’s that?” a dry voice asked. I hesitated before replying, unsure of how she would react. But before I could answer, Ms. Pelt’s attention shifted to Scout. She wanted to know what kind of dog she was and whether she had her shots. I told her Scout was a yellow Lab and confirmed her vaccinations.

5. What can we learn about Shearer?
A. He prioritizes visual appeal.
B. He started WBZ NewsRadio.
C. He is known for his serious reporting.
D. He’s achieved success on social media.
6. What do Shearer’s videos feature?
A. Artistic images. B. Casual interviews.
C. Special promotions. D. Sensitive topics.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. From Airwaves to Digital: A New Journalism
B. Discovering odd headlines @reportermatt
C. From Studios to Screens: A Reporter’s Growth
D. Getting His Story with More Than Just the 5 W’s
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. B 7. B

Next the researchers are working on soybeans and cowpeas; the latter is “a hugely important food-security crop in African countries,” Meacham-Hensold says.
11. What is the researchers’ next move regarding the new technique?
A. Apply it to other crops.
B. Promote it among farmers.
C. Evaluate its impact on food security.
D. Study its performance across seasons.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. A
根据文章第一段“When an extreme heat wave struck Illinois in June 2022, crop physiologist Katherine Meacham-Hensold hoped her team’s new bioengineered potato variety would survive it—but she was astonished by just how well it thrived.(2022年6月,当一股极端热浪袭击伊利诺伊州时,作物生理学家Katherine Meacham-Hensold希望她团队新培育的经过生物工程改造的马铃薯品种能够经受住考验,但该品种的茁壮成长程度还是让她大为惊讶)”可知,当极端热浪袭击伊利诺伊州时,作物生理学家Katherine Meacham-Hensold希望她团队新的经过生物工程改造的马铃薯品种能够存活下来,“希望”一词表明她起初对马铃薯品种能否存活的担忧。故选A。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词所在句“This error becomes more frequent at high temperatures, gobbling up energy that would otherwise contribute to growth and potentially reducing crop yields by up to 50 percent.(在高温环境下,这种错误发生得更为频繁,它会gobbling up本可用于植物生长的能量,并且有可能使作物减产多达50%)”可知,这里说的是高温时这种错误变得更频繁,会对本应促进生长的能量产生某种影响,且可能使作物产量降低多达50%,从“降低产量”可推断出是消耗了能量。由此可知,划线短语的意思应该和“消耗”相似。选项D“Consuming”,意为“消耗”,与此相符。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第六段“The new technique could help crops adapt to climate change. Similar strategies have been used previously in rice, but this study is the first to show that it doesn’t cause a decrease in a food crop’s nutritional quality.(这项新技术有助于作物适应气候变化。此前,类似策略已在水稻上得到应用,但这项研究首次表明,这种技术不会导致粮食作物的营养品质下降)”可知,此前类似的策略已在水稻上应用,但这项研究首次表明该技术不会导致粮食作物营养品质下降,即它能保持作物的营养价值。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Next the researchers are working on soybeans and cowpeas; the latter is “a hugely important food-security crop in African countries,” Meacham-Hensold says. A high-yield soybean variety with the same genetic change will hit the field this year.(接下来,研究人员将致力于研究大豆和豇豆;Meacham-Hensold说,豇豆是“在非洲国家是一种极其重要的粮食安全作物”。今年,一种经过相同基因改造的高产大豆品种将进入田间试验阶段)”可知,研究人员接下来将致力于将这项新技术应用于大豆和豇豆上。由此推知,他们的下一步行动是将新技术应用于其他作物。故选A。
D
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. C 15. D
【解析】

【13题详解】
推理判断题。第二段中“Large language models have a keen appetite for electricity. By one estimate, the energy used to train OpenAI’s GPT 4 model could have powered 50 American homes for a century. If so, it is hard to see how generative AI could ever become economically workable.(大语言模型对电力的需求很大。据估计,训练OpenAI的GPT 4模型所消耗的能源可以为50个美国家庭供电一个世纪。如果是这样,就很难想象生成式人工智能如何在经济上可行)”指出了生成式人工智能发展面临能源成本高的问题;第三段中“Already, developments in AI are showing how limits can stimulate creativity. Companies like Meta and Microsoft are developing chips especially for the operations needed to run large language models. Developers are also making changes to AI software.(人工智能的发展已经表明,限制如何能够激发创造力。像Meta和微软这样的公司正在开发专门用于运行大语言模型所需操作的芯片。开发者们也在对人工智能软件进行改进)”给出了可能解决问题的方法。所以第二段和第三段是问题与解决方法的关系。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Investors have become used to the idea that among tech companies, the dominant has a natural advantage. For AI, that assumption can no longer be taken for granted.(投资者已经习惯了这样一种观念,即在科技公司中,占主导地位的公司具有天然优势。对于人工智能来说,这种假设不再是理所当然的)”和“Nvidia sells four-fifths of the world’s AI chips. But other more specialised rivals could well eat into its share. Already Google’s AI processors are the third-most-used in data centres worldwide.(英伟达销售全球五分之四的人工智能芯片。

Ways to Master Doing Things Alone
As a recent college graduate in a new city, Samantha Elliott thought she’d be lonely. Instead, she found companionship in the most unexpected place: with herself.
____16____. Whether you’re taking yourself across the world or to a coffee shop, you’re breaking outside of your comfort zone. And that grows your capacity to take on other challenges in your daily life. With that in mind, let’s see how to perfect the art of spending time alone.
1.____17____
When you go places alone, bring something to focus on, like a book, something that grounds you and reminds you of who you are. Eventually, as you get more comfortable, you’ll likely feel empowered to engage more directly with your surroundings. But in the early days, distractions offer comfort.
2.Lean into moments of connection
On solo adventures, Elliott tells herself that even though she may have arrived alone, she’s not actually there by herself. She’s surrounded by potential friends.____18____. “It becomes less of being alone; I’m doing this thing to seek connections outside of who I already have in my circle,” she says.
3.If you feel awkward, remind yourself of “why”
People are often skeptical about going places alone because they don’t want others to assume they’re friendless. In reality, no one is likely to notice or care who you’re with. ____19____. So, always keep sight of your “why”—the reason you’re trying to get more comfortable with being your own company.
4.Celebrate your accomplishment
Next time you have ventured out alone, spend a few minutes celebrating the experience. Give yourself applause for stepping outside of your comfort zone, even if it felt hard or if things didn’t go exactly as planned. ____20____.
A. Bring along a distraction at first
B. They’re too focused on themselves
C. They can even make you feel more exposed
D. If you feel distracted, remind yourself of “who”
E. That mindset shift helps to meet lots of interesting people
F. Spending time alone and doing things alone can be transformative
G. Associating doing something alone with celebration will help you keep going
【答案】16. F 17. A 18. E 19. B 20. G

第三节(满分25分)
71. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 写作词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置做答。
Hearing her name mentioned repeatedly, Scout assumed that it must be about her.

One day, I couldn’t find Scout, but I had an idea where to look.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Hearing her name mentioned repeatedly, Scout assumed that it must be about her. She wagged her tail excitedly and approached Ms. Pelt cautiously. To my surprise, the stern woman’s expression softened as she reached out to pat Scout’s head. A faint smile appeared on her lips, and she even produced a treat from her pocket. It was as if Scout’s gentle nature had melted the icy barrier around Ms. Pelt’s heart. From that night on, our walks often included brief stops at her porch, where Scout would receive affectionate pats and occasional treats.
One day, I couldn’t find Scout, but I had an idea where to look. Sure enough, she was sitting patiently on Ms. Pelt’s porch, her head resting on the old woman’s lap. Ms. Pelt was stroking her golden fur while telling her stories about her younger days. Seeing this heartwarming scene, I realized Scout had not only found a home with us but had also created a bridge between our family and a lonely neighbor. The dog we thought we were rescuing had ended up rescuing us all in her own special way.
