经典基础题
Passage 1(23-24八年级下·辽宁锦州市第八初级中学·期中)
Two months ago, I asked a group of kids in a school, “Why do we have to study math or other subjects? Your parents also studied these things, but are they using them?” They must be surprised when they are asked this question.
Take this as an example. When you go to a gym, you do some exercise. Maybe you lift weights or do something else. Why do you do that? The reason why you do exercise is to build your strength and improve your health.
Similarly, the reason why you study math or any other subject is that helps develop logical thinking (逻辑思维), and helps you make sense of the world. By studying, you are able to build mental models (心智模型) about the world, so that you can deal with situations more smartly than a monkey would be.
Learning to your mind is like exercising to your body. If you want to keep healthy and make your body strong, you should do exercise often. So if you want to improve your intelligence (智力), you should try your best to study hard on every subject. Besides, something that you are studying may seem useless now. But when you need to use it some day, you will regret if you cannot use it because you don’t study it well now.
That is my answer to this question. Kids should be encouraged to ask more about these questions and learn math and other subjects well so that they will become good at thinking.
1.Whom does the writer take as an example when asking students why they study math?
2.Why do you take exercise?
3.What can you get by studying according to Paragraph 3?
4.Do you think it is useful to learn rnath? Why or why not? Write 30 words or more.
【答案】1.Their parents. 2.To build our strength and improve our health. 3.Mental models (about the world). 4.Yes. It’s really useful. Because math is the basic skill to learn other subjects. It can develop our logical thinking, and helps us understand the world. By studying math, we are able to build mental models about the world and think better.(开放性试题)

Passage 2(23-24八年级下·辽宁大连市甘井子区·期中)
Do you feel sad or lonely at the end of a day? Many of us look for ways to make ourselves feel better, perhaps by exercising, cooking or reading. But experts (专家) say keeping a diary can improve our health.
“Just write down your thoughts and feelings and then you will understand them more clearly,” said Julia Samuel, an expert who helps people with their mental (精神的) health problems. “Talking to your diary by writing things down can be as good as talking to another person when you feel bad.” Keeping a diary is also good for people’s physical (身体的) health. A new study has found that people who keep a diary make fewer doctor visits, because it helps them become more relaxed.
Spending too much time on the smart phone may cause stress (压力). So keep away from the smart phone and keep a diary from now on. The more time you spend in writing, the less time you will spend on your smart phone. Experts advise people to write something in the diary every day, or at least every week.

Passage 4(23-24八年级下·辽宁大连市金州区 ·期中)
Collecting must be one of the various human activities, and it’s one that many psychologists (心理学家) find more attractive.
Some people collect because they want to make money. We call them business collectors. This could be called an instrumental (工具性) reason for collecting. They’ll look for antiques (古董) that they can buy cheaply and expect to sell at a higher price. But there may well be a psychological thought, too—buying cheap and selling dear can give the collector a sense of achievement (成就感).
Another reason for collecting is the desire (渴望) to find something special, such as a rare early recording by a famous singer. Some may spend their whole lives in a hunt for this. Psychologically, this can give a purpose to a life. There is a danger, though, that if one is lucky enough to find what he is looking for, he may feel empty, because the goal that drove him on has gone.
If you think about collecting postage stamps, another reason is its educational value (教育价值). Stamp collecting opens a window to other countries, and to the plants, animals, or famous people shown on their stamps. In the 19th century, many collectors collected fossils, animals and plants from around the globe and their collections provided a large amount of information about the natural world. Without those collections, our understanding would be far behind what it is.
Not all collectors are interested in learning from their hobbies. Some people collect because of the need for a sense of control. Stamp collectors, for instance, arrange their stamps in albums very neatly according to their preferred principles.
13.What can give the business collectors a sense of achievement?
14.Why do the collectors feel empty when they find their special things?

Each car model carries a touching story and pleasant moment in my life.

Has a person ever warmly held a door open for you? How do you feel after playing with friends? And what would you say is your favourite family memory? These questions have one thing in common: they’re all about connecting with people. “Let’s Connect” is the theme of this year’s Children’s Mental (心理的) Health week. It improves mental health by building healthy social (社会的) connections.
Humans naturally connect with others, whether that’s family, friends or people in our community. Healthy connections give people energy and support—we all need people to celebrate and share our worries with. Social connections aren’t just about mental health; they improve physical health too, helping us to live a long life.
Then how to connect with others? “You can reach out and connect with people in so many different ways,” says Julia Clements, the organizer behind Children’s Mental Health Week. You can connect in person or online, with your friends, parents, teachers or classmates. It’s not just people, either. “Some people feel connected with their pets or in nature,” says Clements. She agrees talking to others can be helpful to a lonely person. She advises making time to build more connections through actions as well as words.
Everybody may feel lonely sometimes and refuse to talk to others. “Remember that there are always people that care for you,” advises Clements. She says it’s important to tell someone you trust about how you are feeling, or safe organizations such as Helpline or Shout. They can really help.

“Keeping a diary is one of my relaxations. If you want to write something, you’d better find a place where you feel relaxed, such as a teahouse or a cafe,” said Samuel.
5.In experts’ opinion, is keeping a diary helpful for health?
6.If people keep a diary, why do they make fewer doctor visits?
7.According to Samuel, what’s the better place for writing something?
8.Show your way to make yourself feel better when feeling bad. Write 30 words or more.
Passage 3(23-24八年级下·辽宁丹东市凤城市·期中)
Zhang Li, a 12-year-old boy from Sichuan, used to be lazy. He hardly did any housework. But now, things have changed. Washing dishes, cooking and making the bed…all of these have become part of his daily life.
This big change is the result of a new program at his school. Starting from last term, his school has made housework part of the students’ homework in order to improve their life skills.
At the beginning of each month, every student gets a list of housework to do every weekend. Their parents help keep an eye on their performance. They can do housework, such as cleaning out closets, washing cups and cooking food. On holidays like Mother’s Day, students are asked to prepare gifts for their mothers.
Wang Dan, 13, has learned several life skills through the program, including cooking. “I used to be afraid of fire,” she said. But she tried to overcome (克服) her fear and complete her cooking tasks.
At the same time, she also learned how tired her mother is after doing housework every day. On Mother’s Day, she made a cake for her mother to show her thanks. “I’ve begun to better understand my parents and want to help them more,” she said.
Other schools in Sichuan are also developing programs to teach their students life skills. On May 2, another middle school held a life skill competition. Students had to complete many tasks, including cooking and folding clothes. They showed their skills and proved (证明) that they are growing up.
9.What changed Zhang Li?
10.Why did the school make housework part of the students’ homework?
11.Who kept an eye on the students’ performance?

15.What is the educational value of collecting stamps?
16.If you are a collector, what will you collect? And why? (At least 30 words.)

The game goes like this: The first player chooses a situation (情景) and then makes an example of it. For example, for sounds on a farm, the player might make a pig’s sound. The next player repeats that sound and comes up with a new one. If someone fails (失败), he will be out of the game.

Passage 9(23-24八年级下·辽宁 大连市中山区·期中)
34.What do the three questions in the beginning have in common?
35.What does the underlined word “they” refer to (指的是) in Paragraph 2?
36.According to Clements, what can be helpful to a lonely person?
37.Being a teenager, what can you learn from the passage? Write 30 words or more.

Passage 12 (23-24八年级下·辽宁营口市实验中学·期中)
In the 1700s, many scientists worked on steam engines. In the 1760s, a scientist in England found a way to put steam engines and wheels together. Soon people had a new type of transportation: the steam train.
In 1804, the first train engine was born in England. It travelled only about fifteen kilometres in two hours, In 1825, the first passenger railway opened. The Rocket was the most famous early engine.
During the 1830s, countries all over the world started to build railways. Fifty years later many countries had railways. People built many train stations to help passengers get on and off the trains easily.
Early trains were slow by today’s standards. The Rocket had a top speed of only 45 kilometres per hour. Today’s high-speed trains can travel at about over 300 kilometres per hour. The fastest trains can go about 500 kilometres an hour.
