【原文】Thank you all for being here today. For those who don’t know me, I’m Paul, the eldest son of Mary’s five children. Today I’m here, to celebrate Mary and everything she’s achieved, on her 60th birthday. Mom was born in England on October 16th, 1961. She returned there, aged 16, to begin nursing training, which she said was the only thing she ever wanted to do. My grandmother always said that, even as a small child, she spent most of her time forcing her two brothers to play “patient” in her “hospital”, and in her school reports, teachers always commented on how caring and capable she was. She passed her training with excellent performance and started her career as a registered nurse. She married my dad, Eric, in 1981. I arrived soon after, followed by twins John and Michael, our sister Belinda, and finally, George. As a mother, she was endlessly kind and a huge amount of fun! And she hasn’t changed. Now that she’s retired, she enjoys traveling, playing with her three granddaughters, and has even taken up flying lessons!
第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Best Citywalk Trails in Hong Kong
As a coastal city built on reclaimed land, Hong Kong possesses various distinctive citywalk trails.
Lantau Trail
This 4.5km trail is rated as a challenging route requiring an average of 2h 32min to complete. During the trial, you will be able to reach the highest mountain — Lantau Peak. It’s recommended to bring plenty of water, snacks, and sturdy (结实的) footwear, and set off early in good weather.
Ngong Ping Village Trail
This 1.9km route takes an average of 30min to complete, which accounts for its easy rating. Ngong Ping Village has the largest Buddhism statues of its kind in the world. But you don’t need to be a Buddhist to enjoy a morning at the Tian Tan Buddha. It’s best to start off in the morning, but avoid a foggy or cloudy day.
Sha Tin Trail
It takes about 1h 47min to finish this moderately challenging 6.6km route: This trail features Hong Kong’s most unusual temple, the largest museum, and best shopping malls. Sha Tin may be considered “off the beaten track” for many visitors but for those with more than a short 3 or 4 days stay in HK, it can prove to be a very rewarding day trip.
Cheung Chau Trail
As a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 3h 8min to complete 11.7km. Cheung Chau has been a major fishing port for centuries and still has a large fishing fleet. The scenic ferry journey is one of the highlights of visiting this island.

For years, David James, who studies insects at Washington State University, had wanted to examine the migration patterns of West Coast monarch butterflies. The route the butterflies travel has been hardly known because the populations are too small to follow. For every 200 monarchs tagged (打标签) by a researcher, only one is usually recovered at the end of the trip, James says, and finding even 200 in the wild to tag is unlikely. Knowing the route is vital to conservation efforts, but James had no way to figure it out until he got a phone call from Washington State Prison in Walla Walla.
The prison was looking for new activities to improve the mental health of those serving long-term sentences. So James began working with prisoners to raise monarchs through the whole process of their transformation. The adult insects were then tagged and released from the prison. Over five years, nearly 10,000 monarchs flew from the prison. Elsewhere in Washington, Oregon and Idaho, researchers released another few thousand.
The tags included email addresses, and soon after the first butterflies took off, James started receiving message from people who had spotted them. The butterflies, the reports confirmed, wintered in coastal California. Twelve of them landed at Lighthouse Field State Beach in Santa Cruz. Several more headed to Bolinas and Morro Bay.
The work helps researchers identify ideal places to plant milkweed (乳草属植物) and other plants that are important to the life cycle of West Coast monarch butterflies. It also brought out the gentler side of some of the prisoners. “They were very worried that they were going to harm the butterflies,” James says. Watching the monarch change their form also touched the men. “This butterfly changed,” James recalls prisoners telling him, “and maybe we can too.”
24.What was difficult for David to do in his study?
A.Find enough monarchs. B.Employ qualified workers.
C.Get financial support. D.Build a new laboratory.
25.Why are the butterflies tagged before being released?
A.To guarantee their safety. B.To enable them to fly longer distance.
C.To track their travel routes. D.To distinguish them from other species.
26.What makes the prisoners feel that they can change?
A.The patience the butterflies showed.
B.The transformation of the butterflies.
C.The devotion of James to the butterflies.
D.The hardship the butterflies experienced.
27.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The findings of James’ study. B.The release of the prisoners.
C.The life cycle of the butterflies. D.The impact of the research.

Engineers usually build devices using solids like metal or plastic. However, a team in China has created a new type of device using drops of water. These devices help study and management of tiny amounts of liquid (液体), and the best part is that they are easy to build, adjust, and refashion.
The idea for this project came from blocks. Xin Du, a researcher at Southeast University in Nanjing, China, was inspired when a student brought in a set of blocks. Du realized that just like blocks that can be amalgamated together and can be rearranged, water droplets (水滴) could do something similar. This could be a great way to build systems that control the flow of liquids in tiny tubes, a field known as microfluidics, which studies how liquids move in small spaces, such as in batteries or to model blood flow in the body.
In their research, Du’s team designed a system where water droplets could stick together to form a liquid path. They created a grid with tiny plastic columns that held the droplets in place. When the droplets touched, they joined together but did not spill (溢出) out. This allowed the scientists to control the direction of the liquid path. If they needed to change the direction, they could easily move the droplets around, much like changing the setup of blocks.
The system was reconfigurable, meaning it could be quickly adjusted without starting over. This flexibility is important in microfluidics, where experiments often need to be changed as new discoveries are made.
Du’s team is also working to improve the system by making even smaller channels. Their final goal is to use this technology to improve organoid research, where artificial organs (人造器官) made from living cells are studied. This new system could provide better ways to supply nutrients or blood to these growing cells, making the study of living tissues more accurate and efficient.
28.How does the device created by the team in China differ from others?
A.It is made from plastic. B.It is designed by a student.
C.It employs water drops. D.It features metal structures.
29.What does the underlined word “amalgamated” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Enlarged. B.Combined. C.Distinguished. D.Shown.
30.What does Du’s team expect of the system?
A.It will have wide application in medical treatment.
B.It will bring a heavy profit to the team.
C.It will enable students to be fond of blocks.
D.It will decrease the cost of artificial organs.
31.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Exposure to Various Blocks Sharpens the Brain.
B.Blocks Inspired a New Way to Study Liquids.
C.There Is a Growing Trend Toward Playing Blocks.
D.Engineers Unlocked the Secret of Water Droplets.

Following its move into podcasting (播客) two years ago, streaming platform Spotify started an audiobook (有声书) business. Though it has yet to start making its own recordings, last autumn it made a deal for 200,000 audiobooks to be available to its VIP users.
Not to be beaten, Amazon-owned Audible, which had been used to being the market leader, upped its game, hiring Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes to record multi-voice versions (版本 ) of Dickens’ novels Oliver Twist and David Copperfield, and announcing last month that it had reached an agreement for a recording of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, voiced by more than 100 actors and featuring a “groundbreaking new soundscape”.
Dramatised audiobooks are not an entirely new phenomenon. The use of multiple voices made them accessible to readers who might not have had the patience for the written versions. For example, George Saunders’s Lincoln in the Bardo, which surrounded the dead son of Abraham Lincoln with a group of spirit voices, became a great game of “spot the big name”.
Even single-voice readings can significantly change literature in which style is at the heart. Lucy Ellmann’s hit Ducks, Newburyport, is a case in point: a thousand-page stream of an Ohio woman’s thoughts, written in a single sentence. It unfolds on audio as a 45-hour monologue (独白), which is not the same thing at all, if only because an actor needs to breathe.
To say that audio versions are different does not mean they are not as good as printed texts, as brain scans (扫描) have shown that they excite the same parts of the brain. Additionally, listening to stories makes hearts beat stronger than watching them, according to a latest study. For people with dyslexia (阅读障碍), they can even be a lifeline — as they can be for those who do not have time for, or the habit of, reading books.
So while we celebrate what audiobooks have in common with their printed versions — both enable the brain to create its own pictures in a world where pre-produced images too often do all the work for us — we should also recognize that they are translations into a different medium, even when read by the authors themselves. What is certain is that there is room for both.
32.What strategy did Audible use to maintain its market leader position?
A.Creating its own prize-winning audiobook content.
B.Focusing on single-voice audiobook productions.
C.Offering low-priced audiobooks to its new customers.
D.Inviting a well-known director to record classic novels.
33.How does the author present the effects of different versions of audiobooks?
A.By giving examples. B.By sharing readers’ experiences.
C.By presenting data. D.By referring to experts’ words.
34.What is the purpose of the last but one paragraph?
A.To show the advantages of audiobooks.
B.To compare audiobooks with printed texts.
C.To inform readers of findings about audiobooks.
D.To stress audiobooks’ value in treating dyslexia.
35.What is the author’s view on the future of audiobooks and printed texts?
A.It depends on the choices of readers.
B.Both of them hold the future of reading.
C.Audiobook popularity is not expected to last.
D.Audiobooks will eventually replace printed texts.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It’s expected that students need to develop critical thinking (批判性思维) skills. In other words, students need to learn how to collect information, make judgments about the information and apply it to a new context. One way to develop critical thinking is to be creative about the questions they ask.
36 For example, they help students be better language learners. Often, questions are the first point of contact. Even if the questions are not good enough, they are going to direct the level of your conversation. 37 And when you believe in yourself, you can have more interaction, which might lead to critical thinking.
The usual question-asking pattern starts with specific questions and then moves to abstract questions. 38 Firstly, create questions about information in the text you’re reading. 第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
It was a regular day at the smartphone store. The usual crowd of customers came in, each with their own unique issues. My job was to help them all, whether it was something as simple as transferring contacts or as difficult as fixing a phone that wouldn’t turn on.
Then Joe appeared. He looked to be in his early 50s. His hair was slightly graying. He was practically running towards the counter, his eyes wide with panic.
“You need to give me a new phone!” Joe almost shouted. “This one you sold me a few days ago is broken! The photos in my phone are totally messed up!”
Joe’s urgency made me pay closer attention. “Let’s take a look at what’s going on,” I said. Joe thrust (塞) the phone into my hands, nearly dropping it.
“Look at this! Every picture is ruined!” He sounded out of breath. I opened the photo gallery, and sure enough, the selfies (自拍照) he’d taken were quite strange: His forehead was stretched, and his eyes were oddly wide. The pictures looked like something out of a funhouse mirror.
I started checking the settings, detecting there was a heavy filter (滤光器) turned on, which was distorting (扭曲) his face in every picture. “Sir, it’s actually a filter that’s causing the issue. Your phone isn’t broken; it’s just the settings. Resetting the settings of the camera will help.”
“But it’s digital! I didn’t mess with anything! My photos were fine when I took them,” he argued. “I need these pictures to be perfect! Please, just fix it,” his voice had softened, almost like he was begging now.
Then, almost in a whisper, he admitted, “I need these photos for a dating website.” Suddenly, it all made sense. This was not just any photo but was his shot at finding love. The thought of it going wrong had made him completely uneasy.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Realizing how much this meant to Joe, I knew I had to help him.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I showed him the results of my shots of him.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Realizing how much this meant to Joe, I knew I had to help him. I showed him how to reset the camera settings, making sure to turn off the filter that had been causing the distortion. I double-checked everything, wanting to be certain that this time the photos would come out just right. After completing the adjustment, I suggested Joe start fresh and take some new photos. He still looked tense, like he wasn’t sure this would work. I offered to help him take photos and guided him to pose decently. “Okay, just relax and give me a smile.” Joe forced a nervous but hopeful smile.
I showed him the results of my shots of him. Joe stared at the screen for a moment, and then, as if a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders. Those pictures were normal: His forehead wasn’t stretched, and his eyes looked like his own. He broke into a wide smile. “These are perfect!” he exclaimed, his voice filled with relief. “You really saved the day.” Then Joe left the store a different man, hopeful and ready to take his shot at finding love. Seeing him off, I sensed a smile spread across my face. Sometimes, the smallest gestures really do make the biggest difference.

21.Which trail takes the shortest time?
A.Cheung Chau Trail. B.Ngong Ping Village Trail.
C.Sha Tin Trail. D.Lantau Trail.
22.What do Ngong Ping Village Trail and Sha Tin Trail have in common?
A.They are physically demanding. B.They are for experienced walkers.
C.They have a religious atmosphere. D.They include guided tours for visitors.
23.What can you experience during the Cheung Chau Trail?
A.Appreciate fishery scenery. B.Buy meaningful souvenirs.
C.Visit local museums. D.Enjoy peak scenery.

Secondly, create questions about what the information in the text has to do with your own life. Finally, you create questions about abstract ideas — ideas that have come up in the questions about yourself. During the process, you’ve practiced creative ways to ask questions. 39
However, when you are told which questions to answer, you are less likely to be creative about the questions you ask. 40 Try making a list of questions that go from concrete to abstract, like the steps given above.
A.So, ask questions related to your own life.
B.So, practice developing your own questions.
C.Besides, people who ask questions are very confident.
D.Question-asking activities are good for students in many ways.
E.If you’re reading a new text, you can develop questions in three steps.
F.The ability to ask abstract questions is related to higher-order thinking.
G.At the same time, you’ve practiced critical thinking by connecting information to yourself.

66.Dear Bob,
Knowing from your letter that you are interested in robots, I am writing to share my wonderful experience with you.
What attracts me most is a companion robot that is exactly like a human being. It can walk and talk just like a person does. The companion robot is supposed to be a friend for people living alone, which also provides people with a lot of comfort and enrich their lives. In addition, the robot could help monitor the health condition of people real-time in case any emergency arises. Personally, I do see the companion robot as a solution to people’s problems.
I wish I could visit the robot exhibition with you next time.
Yours,
Li Hua

21.Which trail takes the shortest time?
A.Cheung Chau Trail. B.Ngong Ping Village Trail.
C.Sha Tin Trail. D.Lantau Trail.
22.What do Ngong Ping Village Trail and Sha Tin Trail have in common?
A.They are physically demanding. B.They are for experienced walkers.
C.They have a religious atmosphere. D.They include guided tours for visitors.
23.What can you experience during the Cheung Chau Trail?
A.Appreciate fishery scenery. B.Buy meaningful souvenirs.
C.Visit local museums. D.Enjoy peak scenery.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
