Dear Carl,
I’m thrilled to know you’re participating in the “Colorful High School Life in China” photography competition. I’d like to recommend the school sports meeting as your shooting scene.
During the sports meeting, students show their vitality and team spirit. You can capture athletes dashing on the track, classmates cheering passionately, and the moment of victory. It vividly reflects the dynamic and colorful aspects of our high school life.
I sincerely hope your work will stand out in the competition. Looking forward to seeing your excellent photos.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
Before he realized it, Hector found himself standing in Mr. Adler’s room. At the sight of Hector, Mr. Adler mumbled “Where did I put that sheet of Fifth Grade Geography Bee Questions and Answers?” Hearing this, Hector lowered his head. Noticing his nervousness, Mr. Adler inquired what had happened. At that time, Hector nervously took out the envelope, submitted it to Mr. Adler and confessed that he had cheated by reading the questions on it. To his surprise, Mr. Adler didn’t blame him but praised him. Instantly, a wave of relief seized Hector.
The next day the entire school came to watch the Fifth Grade Geography Bee. Having been up late studying, Hector looked exhausted but excited. So did the other competitors. All the eyes fixed on the stage, Hector felt his heart beating fast. Unfortunately, the questions Mr. Adler rewrote were so tough that he was knocked out in round three. But Hector realized that he didn’t feel bad about losing. Whether others knew he was smart was of no significance. He’d set out to learn everything about the world and ended up learning more about himself.

Text 1
W: This traffic is crazy! I only want to go to the city bank.
M: Oh, you’ll be waiting here for ages. The quickest way would be to leave your car here and walk. The bank is only five minutes’ walk away. (1)
Text 2
W: Are you spending the summer at your aunt and uncle’s place in Spain again this year?
M: Sadly, not. My cousin has just recovered from an illness, so they’re going to visit her in Los Angeles. I’m looking at other beach holidays. Paris looks nice! (2)
Text 3
W: This place is huge, dear. We only had one bedroom and one bathroom before. Now, we have a separate kitchen, a living room, and a dining room.
M: Yes. Plus, we have three more bedrooms. (3) Our parents can stay with us when they visit us!
Text 4
M: How was your history test today?
W: It wasn’t hard, actually. But since I didn’t study as much as I should have, I couldn’t remember many of the historical events during the test. (4)
Text 5
M: Have you seen the latest movie starring Vin Daniel?
W: No, I haven’t had a chance to. But it is said that it’s his first action movie.
M: Yeah, I saw it last weekend and it was amazing. He will definitely shine in this new field. (5)
Text 6 (第6题为总结题)
W: What would you tell Chinese students who feel nervous about speaking English due to their accent(口音)?
M: Well, first, I would remind them that even native speakers have accents. Being British, I sound very different to my Australian and American co-workers. And that’s okay!
W: Right! Of course.
M: Secondly, I’d advise students to focus on pronunciation. This is the key to making yourself understood, which is really the most important thing.
W: Absolutely.
M: Lastly, remember, nobody should ever make fun of you for having an accent. Few native English speakers know any Chinese, so be proud of your achievements! (7)
Text 7
M: Excuse me, madam. Sorry to stop your food shopping. (8) I’m here on behalf of the Getting Wild Rescue Center. Are you an animal lover? (9)
W: Yes, I have two dogs.
M: Great! Have you heard about the “Adopt, Don’t Shop!” activity? (9)
W: No. What’s that?
M: We’re trying to educate people about the benefits of adopting their pets from shelters rather than buying them. (9)
W: Interesting. Tell me more.
M: Firstly, adoption saves you money. Most shelters have a wide variety of different animals to suit your needs, and many offer advice and support as well. And most importantly, adoption helps abandoned animals find new and loving families. (10)
W: I didn’t consider that before. But I’ll definitely adopt my next dog, rather than going to a pet shop.
Text 8 (第11题为推断题)
M: Hey, I saw that there’s an evening class on design that I want to take. (13) It’s very close to our hospital. Do you want to join me? (13)
W: Yeah, (13) that sounds interesting. I used to love drawing when I was at school. What days is it on?
M: It’s on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. (13)
W: Oh, I can’t make it on Mondays. I usually meet my sister to play badminton on Mondays. (12) Is the class offered on any other days, like Fridays?
M: No, the art school doesn’t offer any courses on Fridays. But it offers cartoon design on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Is that okay with you?
W: No, I don’t like that, and I have night shifts on Thursdays. So I guess I’ll just play badminton on weekends. (12)

Text 9 (第17题为推断题)

W: Sure, what’s the problem?
M: I can’t add anything to my shopping cart. Every time I try, it says that the item is not available to buy.
W: Have you tried refreshing the page?
M: Yeah, I tried that, but it’s still not working. And the clothes ads keep popping out, which is so annoying.
W: It could be an issue with the website. (15) Do you mind if I take a look?
M: No, go ahead.
W: Okay, I see. You don’t have an account. You need to create one first. (15)
M: I didn’t know I needed to do that. (15)
W: It’s pretty easy. I’ll show you how, and then next time you can sign in with one click.
M: Thank you! I don’t know what I can do without you.
W: You’ll get the hang of it soon. Oh look, you have new member gifts.
M: Where can I collect them?
W: Well, they’re not actual gifts. They’re basically various discounts. Okay, done, check it out, (16) Grandpa.
M: Nice!

Standing here in front of you all today, saying goodbye to my colleagues, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride and satisfaction. It’s been a long and rewarding journey, but I’m finally retiring after 35 years of service. (18) Looking back on my career, I realize just how fortunate that I got this job right after finishing university. I started out as a shy entry-level employee, working my way up through the company with my aims. Along the way, I had the opportunity to work on some incredible projects with some truly talented people. Of course, there were challenges along the way, but I learned that those experiences only made me stronger. Through it all, I felt lost sometimes but never lost sight of my goals or changed my values. (19) Retirement may mark the end of my career, but it also marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life. Now, I finally have the chance to devote myself to helping high school drop-outs continue their education. (20) I can’t imagine what life I would have if I didn’t go back to school. I’m excited to see what I can give back to our society.

Are you one of the 310,000 people waiting to see an NHS physiotherapist about a musculoskeletal issue? Distressingly, a quarter of those in the queue won’t be seen for three months or longer. So what can you do while waiting? Leading physios share their advice.
LOWER BACK PAIN
Lower back pain is characterized by a dull or sharp pain below your ribs (肋骨) to the top of your legs. Most low back pain improves with self-care and physiotherapy, so staying active with gentle movement throughout the day rather than prolonged sitting down is crucial.
ANKLE SPRAIN
An ankle sprain usually takes about six weeks to heal. Heat packs and alcohol can worsen the injury, so it’s best to avoid them for a few days after suffering this injury. An effective exercise to improve ankle movement is to ‘draw’ all the letters of the alphabet in the air with your foot.
SHOULDER IMPINGEMENT
A common cause of shoulder pain is impingement, where the tendon (腱) inside this already small space gets pinched, causing swelling. It is often caused by overuse, and a simple external rotation (外旋) exercise will help.
KNEE PAIN
Typical symptoms of knee pain include discomfort after sitting for a long time, kneeling, or an increase in recent activity. If you work at a desk, make sure your knees and legs are comfortable, and take regular breaks to stretch your legs. For more information, visit the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists’ website: csp.org.uk/ askthephysio.
21. What may worsen an ankle sprain?
A. Sitting for a long time. B. Applying heat packs.
C. Bending legs frequently. D. Doing drawing exercise.
22. Which condition is commonly caused by overuse?
A. Lower back pain. B. Ankle sprain.
C. Shoulder impingement D. Knee pain.
23. Who are probably the target readers of the text?
A. Citizens waiting for treatment.
B. Athletes taking intensive training.
C. Doctors longing for expertise.
D. Patients wanting emergency care.

Have you ever wondered what happens to your mobile phones and laptops after you throw them out to make way for a newer model? According to its latest Global E-Waste Monitor, India is the third top producer of e-waste in the world. E-waste in Indian landfill goes on to pollute soil and groundwater, affecting food supply systems and water sources.
Thankfully, the country has a new group of artists who are changing these thrown mechanical items —from mobile phones to old televisions — into large murals (壁画) and artworks to creatively show their worries for the waste problem.
Over the past quarter of a century, Mumbai’s Haribaabu Naatesan has transformed hundreds of tonnes of e-waste into art, integrating(融合) elements from nature and industry. “I get my waste material from friends, relatives and neighbours who know my interest in e-art and send me bags of thrown electronic appliances,” says Naatesan. Over his career, he has created huge murals for several companies. He has also showed his work at the India Art Fair, as well as several other national displays.
Another artist Vishwanath Davangere has also long worked with e-waste. He likes to take apart old laptops and reassemble (重新组装) them into birds, animals and plants. After retirement, he started pursuing this hobby more seriously and started selling his creations across the world. His most outstanding works include a robotic Egyptian statue with glowing red eyes and a Milky Way made from keyboard keys. He hopes to enable others to reconsider their own consumption habits and make more environmentally conscious choices.
“By giving e-waste a second chance, I aim to raise awareness about the environmental impact of electronic waste.” says Davangare, who today has a collection of more than 600 eco-art objects.
24. Why do the artists create artworks from E-waste?
A. To promote their artistic career.
B. To update electronic appliances.
C. To make profits for several companies.
D. To express their environmental concern.
25. What can we learn about Naatesan from paragraph 3?
A. His creations are displayed globally.
B. He gains support from people around.
C. He has been creating e-art for a decade.
D. His works feature technology and history.
26. Which of the following best describes Davangere?
A. Reliable. B. Confident. C. Generous. D. Devoted.
27. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. E-waste Recycling Sweeping the World
B. Environmental Problems Worrying Indians
C. Indian Creatives Turning E-waste into Art
D. An Art Movement Transforming Trash into Cash
C
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. ”
As Robert Frost reminded us, choices are often difficult and will bring both a gain and a loss. Should I spend my Sunday playing golf or taking a day trip to the North Fork with my wife?
If you are a golfer as I am, you will say “Certainly, go playing golf.” Golf is perhaps the greatest challenge to self-improvement. In golf, every swing is counted and can easily be recalled and reviewed by the golfers as they lie in bed that evening, and therefore, self-improvement is pursued.
Now let us return to the question at hand. You will not be surprised to hear that I did in fact go to the North Fork. But, how has that improved me? Can this be quantified (量化)? In golf, whose goal is to complete the game with as few shots as possible, if I average 80 and I shoot a 76, I know that for that day at least I have improved upon my former self and thus feel satisfied.
You may argue that travel is not about self-improvement at all but just about having grand experiences. I beg to differ. It does matter how these things change and improve me. Seeing the folks dancing in the streets should change you. And talking to the manager of the biscuit shop, ought to change you. I think travel does change us, but it’s very hard to say just how. How does one quantify buying a peach at a farm? Or how do you quantify the tasty taste of the scones (司康饼) at a stand?
Reviewers have had a hard time analyzing the meaning of Robert Frost’s poem. To be honest, I would say all of us have a hard time analyzing our wish to travel to faraway places. I am not sure what the answer is to this tricky question. I may not have made any hole-in-ones on the North Fork but I did enjoy those scones.
28. Why does the author quote the poem?
A. To express the meaning of life.
B. To show the impact of choices.
C. To explain the challenges the poet met.
D. To introduce the general views to choices.
29. What does the author think of playing golf?
A. Its result is measurable.
B. It leads to self-satisfaction.
C. It is the most challenging sports.
D. It shows the potential for both gain and loss.
30. What is the author’s attitude towards his decision of going to the North Fork?
A. Regretful. B. Unclear. C. Content. D. Doubtful.
31. Which of the following proverb will the author agree with?
A. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
B. Every path has its own scenery.
C. Actions speak louder than words.
D. You can’t judge a book by its cover.
D
Imagine an artificial intelligence model that can watch and understand moving images like you and me. Now, scientists have made this a reality by creating MovieNet: an innovative AI that processes videos much like how our brains interpret real-life scenes.
This brain-inspired AI model can perceive moving scenes by simulating how neurons (神经元) make real-time sense of the world. While conventional AI excels at still image recognition, MovieNet is designed to understand complex, dynamic scenes, allowing it to recognize small changes over time.
To create MovieNet, Hollis Cline, senior author of the study, examined how animals’ brains process real-world scenes. Specifically, he studied how tadpoles’ (蝌蚪的) neurons respond to moving stimuli. Tadpoles’ neurons process these visual inputs like solving puzzle pieces: each piece alone may not make sense, but together they form a complete image in motion. Different neurons process various “puzzle pieces” of a real-life moving image, which the brain then combines to form a continuous scene.
Using this understanding, the researchers trained MovieNet to process video clips by identifying small visual signals, allowing it to distinguish between small changes in scenes. In testing, MovieNet achieved 82.3% accuracy, outperforming trained human observers by 18% and doing much better than existing AI models.
Beyond its higher accuracy, MovieNet is more environment-friendly. Conventional AI requires vast amounts of data and energy, but MovieNet compresses (压缩) data like a zipped file, reducing environmental impact. “We’ve also made AI far less demanding,” says Cline. MovieNet could also transform medicine. It might help detect early signs of diseases by tracking small movement changes that are difficult for human eyes to detect.
Looking ahead, the team plans to improve MovieNet’s ability to adapt to different environments and enhance its potential applications. “By designing models that think like living organisms (有机体), we can achieve efficiency levels that aren't possible with traditional AI,” says Cline, “Biology is a gold mine.”

With the widespread use of computers, increasing students type with a greater-than-ever reliance on them to take notes and write papers. 36 Some parents of younger students are dismayed that their children are not just encouraged but required to take laptops to class. Additionally, university professors complain of rampant (泛滥的) distraction in classrooms, with students reading and messaging instead of listening to lectures.
A line of research shows the benefits of an “innovation” that predates computers — handwriting. 37 It helps students recall a random series of words and grasp complicated concepts better. For learning materials by note (死记硬背), from the shapes of letters to the irregularity of English spelling, the benefits of using a pen or pencil lie in how the motor and sensory memory of putting words on paper reinforces that material, which contributes to academic achievements.
One of the best-demonstrated advantages of handwriting seems to be in superior note-taking. In a study from 2014 by Pam Mueller and Danny Oppenheimer, students typing wrote down almost twice as many words and more passages word for word from lectures. 38 However, handwriting — which takes longer for nearly all university-level students — forces note-takers to transform ideas into their own words. 39 Those taking notes by hand also allows students to perform better on tests when they are later able to study from their notes.
Many studies have confirmed handwriting’s benefits, and policymakers have taken note. 40 In Sweden there is a push for more handwriting books and fewer devices. Although nearly all will eventually need typing skills,in an age of typing, handwriting still matters.
A. Studies have found that handwriting can benefit a lot.
B. This aids conceptual understanding at the moment of writing.
C. But today a different debate is raging about the dangers of typing.
D. However, several schools in America have gone so far to ban most laptops.
E. It suggested they didn’t understand so much as rapidly copying the material.
F. Especially, studies have found that writing on paper can better students’ performance.
G. For instance, about half the states in America have required more teaching of handwriting.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Hector stood in the front of his fifth-grade classroom as one of the last two competitors in the Room Five Geography Bee. His opponent having missed the last question, it was Hector’s turn. If he answered his question correctly, he would be the Room Five champion.
“Where did I put that second sheet of questions?” Mr. Adler whispered while searching through a thick pile of papers on his messy desk. Mr. Adler, though a great teacher, had a reputation of being disorganized with a long history of misplacing things. “Oh well, I apologize for the delay.” said Mr. Adler after what seemed like a long time. “Hector, please tell us the capital city of Brazil.” Hearing the question, Hector smiled. Then, there was the answer.
Later that day in the courtyard, many classmates congratulated Hector. Wearing a proud smile, he greeted and thanked them all. Oh, the sweet taste of victory. As it was getting late, the courtyard became deserted. But Hector still didn’t want to leave. Then he saw Mr. Adler crossing the courtyard and holding a half-open bag full of papers. As he hurried past, an envelope dropped out but Mr. Adler was unaware, turned a corner and disappeared out of sight. Hector picked it up. On the envelope were the words “Fifth Grade Geography Bee Questions and Answers”. Hector stared wide-eyed at the envelope. Before he even had time to reflect on the consequences, he opened it and read the questions.
As soon as Hector had done it, he knew it was the wrong choice. He’d cheated and whatever he did now, he couldn’t change the fact. “What if Mr. Adler thought I stole this morning’s questions too?” Hector thought. “He’d take away my Room Five victory for sure.” Little did he know that one of the best days in his life would be turned into the worst so quickly. Torn by his conscience, Hector was totally at a loss what to do.
Para 1: Before he realized it, Hector found himself standing in Mr. Adler’s room.
Para 2: The next day the entire school came to watch the Fifth Grade Geography Bee.
