Unit 5What were you doing when the rainstorm came ? It was a cold winter day. Bob and two of his friends went into the mountain. They first put up their tents under the trees and then rode horses to a forest to see how the trees were growing. In the afternoon when they were about ten kilometers away from their camp, it started to snow. Soon they could not even see their hands clearly before their faces. They could not find the way. They felt frightened. Bob knew there were two roads. One road led to their camp, and the other led to his house. But everything was the same white as snow. How could he take his friends back to the camp? Bob had an idea. The horses! Bob thought, “Let the horses take us back. But what would happen if the horses took the road to my home? That would be a trip of thirty-five kilometers in such cold weather. We’d better find our tents.” But he didn’t have a better idea. It was getting late. They rode on and on. Falling off the stairs hurt me in the head. Almost everyone thought I was dead. But they were wrong. However, it was difficult to get back to normal(正常的) life. I had to leave school and learn everything, walking, talking, and yes, maths. To help me with that task, Mrs. Pillar volunteered to come to the hospital and later to my house once a week. We began with basic maths skills. As time passed by, I made progress. I remember very vividly how she came to my home on Sundays, sat with me at the kitchen table, and threw different coins on the table. She asked me to show her 38 cents, 17 cents, 63 cents. It was challenging, but she also made it fun. After a year and a half, I had progressed a lot, both in body and mind, to return to school. Seven years later, I graduated from the University of Texas at the top of my class. As years went by, I always kept in touch with Mrs. Pillar. Unluckily, one day my parents told me that Mrs. Pillar had been in hospital because she suffered a stroke(中风). Now it was my turn to help her. Mrs. Pillar lay in bed, unable to speak or know anybody around. I pulled some coins out of my pocket, dropped them on her bed, and asked her to show me 12 cents. The nurse thought that my action was very strange until one day Mrs. Pillar smiled happily as I began working with her—just as she had worked with me years before. She made progress everyday and was moved out of ICU(重症监护室) and finally out of hospital. One day, I called to wish her a happy New Year. She spoke into the phone excitedly, “Happy New Year to you and your family, Michael. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.” I quickly said, “Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.” Mrs. Pillar was one of my Junior 2 teachers, but she taught me so much more about life than only maths. 11.Which of the following is the correct order of what happened in the story? a. He was riding on without even looking round to see whether the old woman was all right. The old woman began to shout, “Come back, young man! You dropped something!” When he heard this, the boy stopped the bicycle so suddenly that he nearly fell off. I was tired and puzzled. “Was I good enough to be in the program?” When a professor (教授) asked about our summer plans, I panicked. I didn’t want to appear idle (闲散的). “Gardening.” I responded immediately. In fact, I knew nothing about plants! My professor nodded, saying, “What a good idea, Mari! Emily Dickinson loved gardening.” Emily Dickinson had lived in the countryside, studying plants as a child. I was in my late twenties living in the city without gardening experience. A few days later, I bought a jalapeno seedling At least I could say I’d tried gardening. I watered and changed the dirt for my little plant. I even talked to it. And over the summer, it grew bigger and bigger. I was proud. Maybe I didn’t have a black thumb after all. I started the second year of my MFA, and then it was almost December and my jalapeno was suffering. It was brown in some places, many of its leaves had fallen off. Would my little guy make it? I prayed, “Please be okay.” As if its survival were closely linked to mine. I worked hard in school. Spring came. My jalapeno plant came back to life. It grew bigger, with new leaves. And then it flowered. I handed in my graduate paper -a book of poems -in May. “Your poems are strong,” my professor said. A huge weight lifted. I’d done it! At that time, I found the flowers on my jalapeno plant were gone. I watched closer. Where a flower had been a tiny green fruit pushed through. I smiled. I had succeeded in my MFA program, and my jalapeno plant had grown right beside me! 26.Why did the author begin gardening? A.Just by accident. B.For the love for gardening. C.To respect(尊敬) Emily Dickinson. D.Because of the professor’s words. 27.When did the author begin her first gardening? A.In her childhood. B.In one of her summer breaks. C.In her teens. C.A good luck to do everything. D.An inability to do gardening. 29.What can we infer from the passage? A.The author was talented in writing poems. She asked me to show her 38 cents, 17 cents, 63 cents.” 根据“After a year and a half, I had progressed a lot, both in body and mind, to return to school. Seven years later, I graduated from the University of Texas at the top of my class.”(一年半后,我的身心都有了很大的进步,可以回到学校了。 根据“until one day Mrs. Pillar smiled happily as I began working with her—just as she had worked with me years before.” 故选A。 15. 根据“an old woman was carrying a big basket of cabbages in her hand to the market.” 根据“She hoped to sell them to the people from town.” 根据“The mountain road was narrow(窄的)”可知山路很窄,故选B。 19. 根据“Come back, young man! You dropped something”以及“When he heard this, the boy stopped the bicycle so suddenly...What did I drop”可知男孩停下来问老妇人他掉了什么。故选D。 20. 21.D 22.B 23.C 24.D 25.A 从第四段中when she felt that her house was moving. She ran outside at once with her children. 从并列的这几项“brought them food, clothes and shelter”可猜测出shelter的意思可排除A、B。 A。 26.A 27.B 28.D 29.B 30.A 本文是一篇记叙文。 根据第一段五六七句“When a professor asked about our summer plans, I panicked. I didn’t want to appear idle…Gardening…”” 故选A。 27. 根据第一段一七、第二段一二句“It was our last class before summer break… Gardening…A few days later, I bought a jalapeno seedling.” 根据第二段三四五六句“I watered and changed the dirt for my little plant. I even talked to it And over the summer, it grew bigger and bigger. I was proud. Maybe I didn’t have a black thumb after all.” 根据第三段 “I started the second year of my MFA, and then it was almost December and my jalapeno was suffering. It was brown in some places, many of its leaves had fallen off. …As if its survival were closely linked to mine.” 故选A。
