Across the world, 1.3 billion single-use plastic water bottles are bought daily. However, with only around 9% of plastic being recycled, most of these bottles wind up in landfills (垃圾场) or the sea.
When Madison, a 12-year-old girl, noticed these plastic bottles during her family’s holidays to California, she was deeply troubled. “I just felt like this situation had to change,” she said to Smithsonian Magazine. The sight of plastic waste on the beautiful beach remained in her mind.
In 2021, the idea of creating an eatable water bottle to combat plastic pollution appeared. She named her invention the Eco-Hero.
To bring her idea to life, Madison did some research. She built on old methods, doing many experiments with common food. Through her efforts, she found that a combination of water, lemon juice, and Alginic acid (褐藻酸) formed a new kind of bottle. This bottle could safely hold up to 3/4 cup of water and remain in good condition in the fridge for three weeks.
Madison believed the Eco-Hero could replace paper cups used by runners in races. After drinking the water with the bottles, runners could either eat or throw them away, as these bottles would break down easily in nature.
Madison hopes that the Eco-Hero will encourage others to take action to protect the planet. “It doesn’t have to be in a big way,” she said. “Common people can still make a difference in the world, even if it’s just in a small way.”
42. Why does the writer show numbers in Paragraph 1?
A. To show the importance of landfills. B. To present the plastic waste problem.

A. A good beginning is half done B. Small people make big moves
C. Where there is a will, there is a way D. God helps those who help themselves

Yingge Dance is a special traditional dance from Chaoshan, China. It’s full of local culture and energy. But these days, many young students don’t know much about it.
In a middle school in Chaoshan, two students, 14-year-old Mei and 15-year-old Kai, wanted to change this. Mei said, “Yingge Dance is so cool, but most of our classmates haven’t really seen it. We should let more people know about it.”
So, they started the “Ying Lovers Club”. They made a simple website. On the website, there are pictures and short videos of Yingge Dance shows. Club members can talk to each other there. They share how they feel about the dance and ideas to make it more popular.
The club also has a “Yingge Badge (徽章)” system. Students can get these badges by joining club activities, like making Yingge posters, telling stories about Yingge Dance or practicing Yingge Dance with other members. They can show these badges to their friends and introduce Yingge Dance to them.
Even though Mei and Kai are busy with their schoolwork, they still spend about 15 hours a month on the club. They hope more students will love Yingge Dance through their efforts and help keep this great Chinese culture alive.

Every morning at 5 a. m., when most people are asleep, a person does his tasks in the kitchen, cooking meals for the homeless of Singapore until other volunteers arrive. Day in and day out, Mr Tony Tay and his team prepare, cook, and send the food to other parts of the island. This team of caring volunteers from all walks of life brings a smile to the poor.
During one of his visits to collect vegetables and give them to his poor neighbors, he noticed that some of them did not take the vegetables. Upon asking for the reason, an old lady replied that she could not cook and only ate the rice. Mr Tay then offered to cook for her, and started Willing Hearts, which has cooked nearly 650,000 meals.
In Willing Hearts, volunteers have learned how to cook, talk with different people, pick up different languages, learn greater knowledge and most importantly, build strong relationships with one another.
Through Willing Hearts, Mr Tay hopes to make young people understand the importance of taking care of the elderly. His best gift during the course of this journey is seeing how younger volunteers help and feed the poor. 【答案】例文
Last semester, our school held a meaningful activity called “Plant a Flower for My Beloved.” This activity encouraged students to express affection through flower planting.
I actively participated in this activity. I chose a beautiful flower seed and carefully planted it in the soil. Every day, I watered it and made sure it received enough sunlight. Watching the seed grow into a blooming flower was a rewarding experience.
Through this activity, I learned the importance of patience and care. It also reminded me to appreciate the people who have supported me in my life. I gave the flower to my mother, and her smile made all the effort worthwhile. This experience taught me that even small gestures can have a big impact.
