Sparks grew up mainly in north-central California, where his family moved when he was eight. He attended the University of Notre Dame on a track scholarship, but an injury ended his athletic career and led him to write his first unpublished novel. In 1988, he graduated with a major in business and held a variety of jobs. In the early 1990s, he and his wife, Cathy Cote, settled in North Carolina, which later provided a setting for his novels. While working his day job, Sparks continued to write. He cooperated with former Olympic runner Billy Mills on Wokini: A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self-Understanding. The book, which was inspired by a Native American legend, was published in 1990. Determined to become a professional writer, Sparks spent several months working on The Notebook, his first published novel, which hit The New York Times best-seller list immediately after it reached the public in 1996. By the time the film adaptation (改编) was released in 2004, Sparks had published seven more novels. Although Sparks’s fiction usually involves love stories, he rejects the suggestion that he is a “romance novelist”. His supporters agree that Sparks explores more-serious subject matter, such as loneliness, sadness, and loss, and that many of his books feature less-than-happy endings. That is also evident in his only nonfiction work, Three Weeks with My Brother, in which he and his brother, Micah, share their own emotional responses to the deaths of their parents and sister. Sparks has devoted much of his time and literary profits to writing programs at Notre Dame and to charitable causes, most notably the Nicholas Sparks Foundation, which he and his wife established in 2011. 4. What led Sparks to write his first novel? A. A scholarship. B. His marriage. C. An accident. D. His major. 5. What do we know about The Notebook? A. It arrived in cinemas in 2004. B. It was written by two authors. C. It became a hit due to a report. D. It was Sparks’ nonfiction work. 6. Why isn’t Sparks a romance novelist? A. His stories have nothing to do with love. B. He prefers to record real events in lives. C. His books never end with happiness. D. He pays attention to various themes. 7. Which words can best describe Sparks? A. Lucky and careful. B. Tough and caring. C. Honest and brave. D. Tolerant and calm. C You know that old debate about whether dogs are smarter than cats? Well, science now has a definite answer. It’s dogs. That’s the conclusion of an international group of researchers, who found that dogs have twice as many neurons (神经元) as cats. Neurons are cells that deal with information. And so, the more neurons an animal has, the better its information processing capability, these scientists say. The study was carried out by researchers from six universities in the US, Brazil, Denmark and South Africa. It’s going to be published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroanatomy. The research was done in the lab of Suzana Herculano-Houzel, an associate professor of psychology and biological sciences at Vanderbilt University. Until recently, scientists interested in comparing intelligence across species were limited to using brain size as a sign. “In 2005, my lab came up with a very simple, quick and inexpensive way to count the cells in brains and brain parts,” Herculano-Houzel said. What the researchers did was take some brain matter and basically turn it into a soup. This freed up the cell nuclei (细胞核) so that the scientists could count them directly under a microscope. This is what they found when they looked at the cerebral cortex of cats and dogs. The cerebral cortex is the part of the brain that processes information. A cat’s cerebral cortex has 250 million neurons. A 15-pound mixed-breed (混合种) dog’s has 429 million. When they looked at a 64-pound golden retriever (猎犬), the number was even higher: 627 million neurons. “So, it’s plausible to say that dogs have about twice as many neurons as cats in their cerebral cortex,” she said. “And this means that dogs can do more thinking things than cats.” 8. What does the author imply about the old debate? A. It was surprising. B. It was meaningless. C. It was easily solved. D. It had no clear result. 9. Why did the researchers turn some brain matter into a soup? A. To wake up neurons. B. To study brain growth. C. To see neurons clearly. D. To study cortex better. 10. What affects the neuron numbers of dogs? A Practice. B. Weights. C. Thinking. D. Lifestyles. 11. What does the underlined word mean in the last paragraph? A. reasonable. B. important. C. surprising. D. fearless. D With two Olympic medals and two world skateboarding titles, 16-year-old Rayssa Leal has achieved what most people dream of, Her skills, paired with the joys she shows in skateparks, have brought her fans as well as public attention. But instead of talent and hard work, she shared that her support system made a big difference in landing her a medal at Paris 2024. At the close of the run section of the eight-woman final, Leal had failed to put down a single clean line, lowering her hope of a top three finish. She knew the game wasn’t over, but the already heavy stress on Leal’s shoulders doubled in weight. “After I screwed up the two runs, I thought I was not going to be able to do it anymore.” Leal related her experience. It was then that she went and got support. Her family was there, and her whole team was there. Having received a hug from everyone and having heard very positive and encouraging words, she came back 100 percent, even more focused, That was what changed the game right there. Re-energized, the teenager finished the last section with her very best, And though the gold and silver were out of her reach, she never backed down in the fight for bronze. When the last skater who could overtake her failed the last run, Leal said she fell into a ton of feelings. “As soon as I realised that I was in third place, I broke down. My coach was there. We hugged each other, and we cried together. And all I could think was the most positive thoughts in the world.” 12. What played a major role in Leal’s success at Paris Olympics? A. Effort. B. Skills. C Support. D. Strategies. 13. What does the underlined phrase “screwed up” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Focused on. B. Did badly in. C. Took control of. D. Gave up. 14. How did Leal feel when she hugged her coach? A. Appreciative. B. Stressed. C. Peaceful. D. Anxious. 15. What lesson can be learned from Leal’s story? A. Actions speak louder than words. B. A little encouragement goes a long way. C. You cannot lose the game if you don’t play the game. D. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. How to Feel Better About the Way You Look If you feel insecure about the way you look, you aren’t alone. ___16___ They can easily contribute to feelings of insecurity. B He prefers to record real events in lives. C. His books never end with happiness. D. He pays attention to various themes. 7. Which words can best describe Sparks? A. Lucky and careful. B. Tough and caring. C. Honest and brave. D. Tolerant and calm. C 5. A 6. D 7. 根据第二段中“He attended the University of Notre Dame on a track scholarship, but an injury ended his athletic career and led him to write his first unpublished novel.(他凭借田径奖学金进入圣母大学,但一次受伤结束了他的运动生涯,并促使他写出了第一部未出版的小说)”可知,一次受伤(即意外事故)促使Sparks写了他的第一部小说。 根据第三段中“Determined to become a professional writer, Sparks spent several months working on The Notebook, his first published novel, which hit The New York Times best seller list immediately after it reached the public in 1996. By the time the film adaptation was released in 2004, Sparks had published seven more novels.(决心成为一名职业作家的Sparks花了几个月时间创作了他的第一部出版小说《恋恋笔记本》,该书于1996年面向公众发行后立即登上了《纽约时报》畅销书排行榜。到2004年电影改编版上映时,Sparks又出版了七部小说)”可知,《恋恋笔记本》于2004年被改编成电影上映。故选A项。 根据第四段中“Although Sparks’s fiction usually involves love stories, he rejects the suggestion that he is a ‘romance novelist’. His supporters agree that Sparks explores more serious subject matter, such as loneliness, sadness, and loss, and that many of his books feature less than happy endings.(虽然Sparks的小说通常包含爱情故事,但他不认同自己是“言情小说家”这一说法。他的支持者们一致认为,Sparks探讨了更严肃的主题,如孤独、悲伤和失落,而且他的许多书都以不太圆满的结局收尾)”可知,Sparks不仅仅关注爱情故事,还关注各种不同的主题,所以他不是言情小说家。故选D项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“He attended the University of Notre Dame on a track scholarship, but an injury ended his athletic career and led him to write his first unpublished novel.(他凭借田径奖学金进入圣母大学,但一次受伤结束了他的运动生涯,并促使他写出了第一部未出版的小说)”和第三段“Determined to become a professional writer, Sparks spent several months working on The Notebook, his first published novel, which hit The New York Times best seller list immediately after it reached the public in 1996.(决心成为一名职业作家的Sparks花了几个月时间创作了他的第一部出版小说《恋恋笔记本》,该书于1996年面向公众发行后立即登上了《纽约时报》畅销书排行榜)”可知,Sparks在受伤结束运动生涯后,没有放弃,而是坚持写作并取得成功,体现了他的坚韧。再根据最后一段“Sparks has devoted much of his time and literary profits to writing programs at Notre Dame and to charitable causes, most notably the Nicholas Sparks Foundation, which he and his wife established in 2011.(Sparks将大量的时间和文学收益投入到圣母大学的写作项目以及慈善事业中,其中最著名的是他和妻子在2011年成立的Nicholas Sparks基金会)”可知,他很有爱心,愿意为慈善事业付出。所以“Tough and caring(坚韧且有爱心)”最能描述他。故选B项。 C You know that old debate about whether dogs are smarter than cats? A. Practice. B. Weights. C. Thinking. D. Lifestyles. 11. What does the underlined word mean in the last paragraph? A. reasonable. B. important. C. surprising. D. fearless. D 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第一段中“You know that old debate about whether dogs are smarter than cats? Well, science now has a definite answer.(你知道那个关于狗是否比猫聪明的古老的争论吗?现在,科学有了明确的答案)”可推知,以前这个争论是没有明确答案的。故选D项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中““In 2005, my lab came up with a very simple, quick and inexpensive way to count the cells in brains and brain parts,” Herculano-Houzel said. What the researchers did was take some brain matter and basically turn it into a soup. This freed up the cell nuclei (细胞核) so that the scientists could count them directly under a microscope.(“2005年,我的实验室提出了一种非常简单、快速且经济的方法来计算大脑及大脑各部分中的细胞数量,”Herculano-Houzel说道。研究人员所做的就是取一些脑组织,将其基本转化为一种“汤”。这一过程释放了细胞核,从而使科学家能够直接在显微镜下对它们进行计数)”可知,研究人员把一些大脑物质变成“汤”是为了让细胞核分离出来,从而能在显微镜下直接数细胞核数量,也就是为了更清楚地观察神经元。故选C项。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“A 15-pound mixed-breed (混合种) dog’s has 429 million.(一只15磅重的混合品种狗的脂肪有4.29亿)”和最后一段中“When they looked at a 64-pound golden retriever (猎犬), the number was even higher: 627 million neurons.(当他们观察一只64磅重的金毛猎犬时,这个数字甚至更高:6.27亿个神经元。)” 根据划线词句前文“A cat’s cerebral cortex has 250 million neurons. A 15-pound mixed-breed (混合种) dog’s has 429 million.(猫的大脑皮层有2.5亿个神经元,而一只15磅重的混血狗的大脑皮层则有4.29亿个神经元)”以及“When they looked at a 64-pound golden retriever (猎犬), the number was even higher: 627 million neurons.(当他们观察一只64磅重的金毛猎犬时,这个数字甚至更高:6.27亿个神经元)”,可知,狗的神经元数量大约是猫的两倍,从而推知划线词句“So, it’s plausible to say that dogs have about twice as many neurons as cats in their cerebral cortex(所以,狗的大脑皮层中的神经元大约是猫的两倍的说法是plausible)”中划线词应为“合理的”意思,与A项同义。故选A项。 D With two Olympic medals and two world skateboarding titles, 16-year-old Rayssa Leal has achieved what most people dream of, Her skills, paired with the joys she shows in skateparks, have brought her fans as well as public attention. A. Effort. B. Skills. C. Support. D. Strategies. 13. What does the underlined phrase “screwed up” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Focused on. B. Did badly in. C. Took control of. D. Gave up. 14. How did Leal feel when she hugged her coach? A. Appreciative. B. Stressed. C. Peaceful. D. Anxious. 15. What lesson can be learned from Leal’s story? A. Actions speak louder than words. B A little encouragement goes a long way. C. You cannot lose the game if you don’t play the game. D. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. C 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第一段中“But instead of talent and hard work, she shared that her support system made a big difference in landing her a medal at Paris 2024.( 但她分享说,她的支持系统对她在2024年巴黎奥运会上获得奖牌起了很大的作用,而不是天赋和努力。)” 根据第二段中“She knew the game wasn’t over, but the already heavy stress on Leal’s shoulders doubled in weight.( 她知道比赛还没有结束,但李尔肩上本已沉重的压力又增加了一倍。)”以及划线单词句中“I thought I was not going to be able to do it anymore.( 我想我再也做不下去了。)” 根据最后一段中“We hugged each other, and we cried together. And all I could think was the most positive thoughts in the world.( 我们拥抱在一起,一起哭。我所能想到的都是世界上最积极的想法。)”可以看出,她当时满是积极的想法。在经历了比赛的波折,因为家人和团队的支持最终获得铜牌,与教练拥抱时,她内心充满感激之情。故选A项。 根据文章大意以及倒数第二段中“Her family was there, and her whole team was there. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do. The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely. Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge.
