Rita was in a dilemma. Cheating meant risking suspension, but failing the exam meant a humiliating parent-teacher conference. After a tough struggle, she went to the teachers’ office hurriedly. Fortunately, nobody was there except Mr. Grant. He hunched at his desk grading papers.“Sir?”Her voice trembled.“I…I don’t have my calculator.”Mr. Grant’s gaze lifted slowly, scanning her face. Without a word,he opened his desk drawer and slid a calculator toward her.“Return it after the exam,”he grunted, already turning back to his papers.
The bell signaling the start of the exam rang. As Rita pressed the calculator’s buttons, the symbols no longer barked — they whispered clues. This time, numbers felt less like enemies and more like hesitant allies. The countless hours she had spent studying seemed to pay off. The exam bell was ringing again, signaling the end of the exam. Rita went to the office, which smelled of chalk dust and coffee. She placed the calculator on the desk,“Thank you,Mr. Grant.”she said,Mr. Grant peered over his glasses and waved his hand, and he was not as serious as she thought. After this episode,Rita made up her mind to get rid of the habit of carelessness.

M:Didn’t you work in Sydney in the last two years?(10)
W:Yes,(10) but I lived in a small town near the farms where we did our research. Also city living is expensive!
M:I see!So,lots of wild animals,then?
W:Yeah,it was quite an experience!
Text 8(第11题为推断题)
M:Sophie,(12) (13) thanks for coming in.
W:No problem,Alan. (12) I was visiting a bookstore next to the office building anyway.
M:Great. I won’t keep you too long. We just need you to sign another form.

W:What is it for?
M:It states that once you start working for us,you won’t post anything about our projects online.

Text 9
W:Have you watched Coco?
M:Yeah!Isn’t it beautiful? It’s probably my favorite Pixar movie. It says so much about the importance of family relationships.
W:I agree. What I really love about Pixar movies is how they bring up serious subjects in really clever ways.
M:Yeah, they know the art of storytelling, neither too childish nor too difficult. The movie Inside Out really made a strong impression on me. I love the way how they explain human’s feelings,so creative!(14)
W:Exactly! Now,I’m excited to watch Lightyear when it comes out next month. (15)
M:What’s that about?
W:It’s a movie about Buzz Lightyear, the character from the Toy Story movies!
M:Wow,cool! We should go and see it together. (15)
W:Definitely!(15) I can’t believe that the original Toy Story movie came out in 1995. I was 12 then. (16)
M:I know!Though the technology has improved since then, everything looked so real at that time!(17)
W:It’s probably because the directors had used the most up-to-date technology back then in some old movies. Like Jurassic Park, the dinosaurs look still as real and scary now as they did back in 1993!(17)
M:Yeah,that’s true!

Text 10
Good morning,it’s nine o’clock on Monday,June 27th,and you’re listening to Kyoto FM. The government has issued a request to people in Tokyo and its neighboring areas to try to use less electricity. It’s because of the increasing energy needs caused by unusually hot temperatures. Starting at 3:00 p.m.,officials ask people in the capital to turn off all unnecessary lights, computers and other electronics until 6:00 p.m. (18) But air-cooling systems still can be used. Over the weekend, temperatures in central Tokyo rose above 35 °C,while the nearby city of Isesaki(伊势崎市)saw a new record temperature of over 40 °C. (19) This is a lot hotter than normal summer temperatures in the region, which typically stay below 30 °C in June. Although electricity companies are working hard to solve the problem,it will be difficult to do so until the temperature drops. Japan’s power supply has struggled since the earthquake in March, which forced some major power plants to stop working. (20) These issues, along with an increase in electricity requirements, may cause possible power failure in Tokyo.

Fish House-are used to thinking local.About an hour's drive south of the Palisades, where
the Eaton Fires are burning in Los Angeles, the Gruels have set up their small business to
double as a wildfire relief center.
At least 10 people have died in the fires, and authorities say the death toll is likely to rise.
Thousands of structures have burned, with countless neighborhood blocks reduced to ash.About

On a recent Sunday,a college student Li Mingchun had dinner with two of his friends, and
one of them bought him two bottles of milk tea because "nothing is more harmonious with a nice
meal than sweet milk tea".
However,a recent research paper has shown that frequent consumption of the drinks might
lead to addiction, which is associated with depression and anxiety. The research was based on a
study of 5,281 college students in Beijing in 2022.The results of the study have crucial
implications for policymakers,as milk tea addiction may pose a severe problem among youth,

Measures could include regulating milk tea advertisements, introducing educational programs on
the side effects of addiction on mental health, and introducing food hygiene (standards

For coffee lovers, the future is shaping up to be bitter and pricey,as climate change roasts
the world's key growing regions.Farmers have to dig deeper to get water.
Tougher growing conditions have led Vietnamese farmers to question the value of coffee as a
cash crop, with some pulling out their trees to plant black pepper and other tropic fruits.
Reduced.supply has already pushed the robusta(罗布斯塔)price in2024 to the highest level
since at least 2008-and still, rising temperatures mean future production will fall short.
Regions suitable for crop production reduce globally primarily due to increased heat.
Hardier varieties are expected to fare better, and for coffee that means strong, earthy robusta.
Researchers found that it would be necessary to adapt, including by replacing arabica(
with hardier robusta. However, robusta is not a silver bullet for climate change.Researchers
are still leaming robusta's limits though it's more tolerant to heat and to some diseases and pests.
Prolonged dry periods in Vietnam and lack of irrigation water in recent years have already
severely affected the productivity of robusta coffee farms in the Central Highlands, according to a
study published in 2021.In an October report,World Coffee Research (WCR)said the world
may face robusta shortages in 2040 of as much as 35 million bags when taking into account rising

Rita was in a dilemma. Cheating meant risking suspension, but failing the exam meant a
humiliating parent-teacher conference. After a tough struggle, she went to the teachers’ office
hurriedly. Fortunately, nobody was there except Mr. Grant. He hunched at his desk grading papers.
“Sir?”Her voice trembled.“I…I don’t have my calculator.”Mr. Grant’s gaze lifted slowly,scanning
her face. Without a word,he opened his desk drawer and slid a calculator toward her.“Return it after
the exam,”he grunted, already turning back to his papers.
The bell signaling the start of the exam rang. As Rita pressed the calculator’s buttons, the
symbols no longer barked — they whispered clues. This time, numbers felt less like enemies and
more like hesitant allies. The countless hours she had spent studying seemed to pay off. The exam
bell was ringing again, signaling the end of the exam. Rita went to the office, which smelled of chalk
dust and coffee. She placed the calculator on the desk,“Thank you,Mr. Grant.”she said,Mr. Grant
peered over his glasses and waved his hand, and he was not as serious as she thought. After this
episode,Rita made up her mind to get rid of the habit of carelessness.

带计算器,考试时是禁止传递计算器的。她的好朋友 Betty 建议她找数学老师说明情况,Liam

Isesaki(伊势崎市)saw a new record temperature of over 40 °C. (19) This is a lot hotter than
normal summer temperatures in the region, which typically stay below 30 °C in June. Although
electricity companies are working hard to solve the problem,it will be difficult to do so until the
temperature drops. Japan’s power supply has struggled since the earthquake in March, which
forced some major power plants to stop working. (20) These issues, along with an increase in
electricity requirements, may cause possible power failure in Tokyo.
