To answer our question, we need to ask a further question: What is the nature of our humanity? To put it in a simple way, people consider two completely different views of humanity. The first view is about dominance (统治) and power. In an early paper on the psychology of forgiveness, Droll (1984) made the interesting claim that humans' key nature is more aggressive (好斗的) than forgiving allows. Those who forgive are against their basic nature, much to their harm. In his opinion, forgivers are giving up their wellbeing as they offer kindness to others, who might then take advantage of them. 36 The second view focuses on the theme of cooperation, mutual respect, and even love as the basis of who we are as humans. Researchers find that to fully grow as human beings, we need both to receive love from and offer love to others. Without love, our connections with a wide range of individuals in our lives can fall apart. Even common sense strongly suggests that the will to power over others does not make for harmonious interactions. For example, how well has slavery (奴隶制) worked as a mode of social harmony? 37 From this second viewpoint of who we are as humans, forgiveness plays a key role in the biological and psychological integrity of both individuals and communities because one of the outcomes of forgiveness, shown through scientific studies, is the decreasing of hate and the rebuilding of harmony. Forgiveness can break the cycle of anger. At least to the extent the people from whom you are keeping away accept your love and forgiveness and are prepared to make the required adjustments. Forgiveness can heal relationships and reconnect people. 38 As an important note, when we take a classical philosophical view, that of Aristotle, we see the difference between potentiality and actuality. We are not necessarily born with the capability to forgive, but instead with the potential (潜能) to learn about it and to grow in our ability to forgive. The actuality of forgiving, its actual behavior in unfriendly situations, develops with practice. 39 24.What is Droll's idea about forgiveness? A.People should offer kindness to others. B.People who forgive can have their own wellbeing affected. C.Forgiveness depends on the nature of humanity. D.Aggressive people should learn to forgive. 根据第一段中的“In his opinion ... take advantage of them. 25.What does the example in Paragraph 2 display? A.To forgive is to love. B.To fight is to grow. C.To give is to receive. D.To dominate is to harm. 根据第二段中的“Even common sense … a mode of social harmony? 26.What is the writer's attitude toward forgiveness? A.Favorable. B.Reserved. C.Objective. D.Skeptical. 故选A。 27.What is message of the last paragraph? A.Forgiveness is in our nature. B.Forgiveness grows with time. C.Actuality is based on potentiality. D.It takes practice to forgive. 根据最后一段中的“We are not … develops with practice.” C In April, Uday Bhatia, a student from Delhi, India, visited Bichpuri as a volunteer for a 2day programme. During his stay, he found that the biggest problem the local children faced was frequent power cuts, which made it difficult for them to study. That left a deep impact on Uday. Uday came back to Delhi and took immediate action to address the problem. He soon understood that residents of villages like Bichpuri couldn't afford electrical devices. He wanted to find and develop a solution to rural India's power shortage. After 24 attempts, the 18yearold built the solution—Uday Electric—a bulb that can offer a power backup of almost 10 hours in case of a power cut. 44 Explaining how the bulb works, Uday states that the technology used is very simple. “When the bulb is connected to a power source, energy gets stored in the battery. When the power supply is cut off, the bulb uses the energy stored in the battery to give out light,” he explains. At first, he built a bulb with a fourhour backup. But he wanted to provide a backup of 8 10 hours. Thanks to his love of computer science, he developed a way to change the bulb's brightness, increasing the backup time without increasing the size of the battery. The bulb now comes with settings to change the brightness. 45 Uday sold each bulb at only Rs 250 (3 dollars) and has so far sold over 7,000 units in many remote villages. But what Uday did went beyond business; he donated 950 units to houses in the poorest areas through a nongovernmental organisation, bringing joy to those living without electricity. “When I saw the joy on people's faces when their houses were lit up, I felt on top of the world. No feeling could come close to it,” says Uday. Uday won the Diana Award, which honours “outstanding young people selflessly creating positive social change”. He wishes to bring bulb to as many houses as he can in the coming years. 46 28.What inspired Uday to invent Uday Electric? A.A study he did at school. B.A volunteering experience. C.His interest in computer science. D.The power cuts he faced every day. 根据第一段中的“In April ... made it difficult for them to study.”以及第二段中的“Uday came back to Delhi and took immediate action to address the problem.” 29.What can we learn about Uday Electric? A.It is big and solarpowered. B.It can produce many colours. C.It can work without batteries. D.It is affordable and effective. 根据第五段中的“Uday sold each bulb ... in many remote villages.” 30.How does Uday sound in Paragraph 5? A.Satisfied. B.Formal. C.Confident. D.Humorous. 根据第五段中Uday的话“When I saw the joy … could come close to it (当我看到人们的房子被点亮时他们脸上的喜悦,我感觉自己达到了人生的巅峰。 故选A。 31.What is the best title for the text? A.A solution to end India's power shortage B.A young Indian changemaker giving back C.Teen's bright idea lights rural India D.The inspiring journey of a teenage Indian's success D In this modern age, most of us have forgotten to be patient and get angry very quickly over minor things like a traffic jam, a baby crying and such things. It often seems so easy to get what we want right away that when we have to wait even a little while, it seems like we are waiting for ages. We used to be happy to wait 10-15 minutes it took to reheat food in the oven (烤箱), but now we're impatient when waiting two minutes it takes in the microwave. 51 With the convenience provided by modern society, is patience still a virtue in the fastpaced world? To begin with, I'd like to share the meaning of the word “patience”. Generally it means being able to tolerate delay without getting impatient. However, it isn't necessarily a passive activity. It takes an active commitment, knowing when to take action and when not to. So I would argue that patience is still—and always—a virtue. Sure. I used to be one of those who often stared at the microwave for the full two minutes it took to heat my food. And in the end, the food tasted bad. If I had had the patience to heat the food properly in the oven, I would have enjoyed a delicious meal. 52 Actually the benefits of patience go beyond just heating up our food. Patience is an exercise in selfcontrol which shows that we can handle life problems when things get tough, and that we can exercise good judgment. Lack of patience can cause us to make wrong decisions that negatively affect our health and happiness, waste our time, put us under a lot of stress and affect our relationships in a very negative way. Everything in life happens for a reason. Sometimes we face an obstacle because we need to grow in ways we didn't realize. It's not always obvious when that was happening, but with patience we will soon see clearly why it happened; and what we were meant to learn from it. 53 Taking time to think about our actions and being patient are a small price to pay when we determine the best possible solution to any problems. 54 32.The author uses the example of reheating food to show that ________. A.people have no time to enjoy the meal B.high technology brings more benefits C.more people lack patience now D.the fastpaced life makes people stressed 根据第一段中的“In this modern age ... and such things.”及“We used to be ... it takes in the microwave.” 33.What could be inferred from Paragraph 4? A.People under stress tend to get angry. B.Patient people are more likely to make better decisions. C.People with selfcontrol are easier to succeed. D.Patient people are unlikely to make mistakes. 34.What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 5? A.A wise man learns from experience. B.A brave man is not afraid of challenges. C.A man should find out reasons for what happened. D.A man should be patient to deal with difficulties. 根据第五段中的“Sometimes we face an obstacle … learn from it. 35.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.The causes of impatience B.Ways to exercise patience C.Is patience really a virtue? D.What does “patience” mean? Every day, we face a series of opportunities to do the right thing. Sometimes we seize (抓住) those moments; other times, we don't. __36__ And what drives some people to take the moral high ground? Jessie Sun interviewed 952 people about the motivations (动机) for moral behavior and the changes they wished to make in their lives in order to become more morally good. 59 When we think about morals, we often think about making “personal sacrifices (牺牲)” for the greater good. In Sun's study, she found that nearly half of the participants said they were most encouraged to become more moral for themselves. __37__ And fewer participants said that they most wanted to benefit friends and people in general. Moreover, many people believe that acting more morally—for example, being more thoughtful, more openminded—would increase their own wellbeing. The more they believed that their moral change would have positive results for themselves, the more they reported being encouraged to make that change. __38__ That was the most surprising finding in the study. 60 __39__ Interestingly, participants generally expected possible harms to themselves and others if they were honest. You can imagine that some people regularly tell white lies to save other people's feelings, and they believe it would be hurtful if they were honest. Researchers also asked people about the things they'd like to improve about themselves. If they're extremely shy, they usually want to become more comfortable in social situations. But if they aren't especially honest or thoughtful, they usually won't improve those aspects of their lives on purpose. __40__ 第二部分 61 A.How can we become more moral? B.So, why do we make these choices? C.Being moral just isn't what most people consider first. D.Being moral means different things to different people. E.But people see some disadvantages of being moral, too. F.In short, many people want to become more moral for their own benefits. G.Sixteen percent said that they most wanted to become more moral for their family. 答案: B 解析:上文“Every day, we face … other times, we don't.” 下文“And what drives some people to take the moral high ground?” 答案: G 解析:上文“In Sun's study … more moral for themselves.” 答案: F 解析:上文“The more they believed … to make that change.” 答案: C 解析:根据上文“But if they aren't … their lives on purpose.” Thomas became a hero at 61. Secondly, empathy is essential. It is the bridge that connects hearts, enabling a friend to share joys and sorrows. Lastly, loyalty is a cornerstone of friendship. It ensures that a friend remains constant in our everchanging lives. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this matter. What qualities do you value most in a friend? I look forward to exchanging ideas with you. It is brave to admit your mistake. You may be scared of being scolded. But it is the only way for you to be free from guilt. Simon was a curious boy. He lived with his grandfather. Simon was fond of reading adventure stories. So he was always curious about the storeroom where his grandfather kept his priceless antiques (古董). Though Simon knew his grandfather did not like anyone to touch his rare collections, he quietly entered the storeroom without his grandfather's permission one night. 91 Once inside the room, Simon stood on a chair. He lifted the big box where his grandfather had kept many valuable watches bought from different countries he had visited. While getting down from the chair, Simon's elbow (肘部) struck against the chair. When he tried his best to pull his arm out, the box slipped out of his hands and fell onto the floor. All the watches lay all around. To his shock, he found the glass of his grandfather's favorite watch broken. Simon was afraid that his grandfather would come to know about the broken glass. He started picking up the pieces of glass hurriedly. Simon thought, “My grandmother gifted the watch to my grandfather. This must be one of his most treasured possessions. How could I tell him that his favorite watch had broken? He must be angry with me. If I do not tell him, he will not come to know about it.” Simon got nervous. His heart started beating faster. He put the broken watch back into the box and placed the box back on the shelf. Afterwards, he went to sleep. However, he could not sleep in peace throughout the whole night. The broken watch even showed up in his dream. 92 The next morning, Simon got up much earlier than before. The sleepless night made him realize that holding back the truth itself was more uncomfortable than breaking the watch. “But that watch is Grandpa's favorite and he told me to be careful of the box before.” Simon said to himself and didn't dare to face his grandfather. 93 Though still worried about himself being scolded, Simon finally gathered the courage to see his grandfather.﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍ Simon said, “I was scared at first, but I dared not tell a lie.” 第四部分 95 [精彩范文] Though still worried about himself being scolded, Simon finally gathered the courage to see his grandfather. It can be mended.” Simon felt relieved. His grandfather said in a soft voice, “It was brave enough of you to tell me about the broken watch. You knew that I would scold you, didn't you?” Simon said, “I was scared at first, but I dared not tell a lie.” Simon's grandfather smiled, “When I was at your age, I also broke my mother's precious vase.
