七、阅读理解
①Language comes from culture and in turn it influences culture. This can be seen when we compare English in the UK, the US and Australia.
②Of all the three kinds of English, British English has the most difficult grammar and spelling rules. This is probably because the development of English has been undercontrol of the rich people. They spoke French and wanted to make themselves different from the workers in the past.
③American English is thought to be the easiest to understand. Compared with British English, its spelling is similar to its pronunciation. And its grammar rules are much easier to learn. It’s much easier for foreigners to learn. That’s why American English is more popular in the world.
④The reason why American English is simpler than British English has something to do with its history. British English was mainly influenced by the rich people. But American English was based on the language spoken by working people from different countries. So American English was based on a rule to help all the working people from different cultures communicate more easily.
⑤Australian English is different from British and American English. It is not as polite as the other two. At times, this can make it almost impossible to understand and quite impolite to some well-educated speakers. That is maybe connected with the early settlers (移民).
( )36. Why is British English more difficult than American English?
A. Because it was influenced by the rich.
B. Because English people are better educated.
C. Because it was created by Frenchmen.
D. Because England was more powerful in the past.
( )37. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Australian English is easy to understand.
B. Australian English is preferred by educated people.
C. British English became popular among the rich.
D. American English may come from working people’s language.
( )38. What’s the structure of the passage?
A. ①②③/④⑤ B. ①/②③④⑤
C. ①②③④/⑤ D. ①/②/③④⑤
