Before McElroy moved into one EngAGE community, she had never imagined her life would be like this. Although in the golden years of retirement (退休), she teaches arts, recently she has opened up an art exhibition, and is planning a flight to Paris to find inspiration for her next creative project.
Her lifestyle in many ways has been made possible by the non-profit organization EngAGE, which has revitalized (使重焕活力) the aging process by providing various free on-site programs in its senior communities, including (包括) novel writing, performing plays, storytelling for radio, and art shows. It helps seniors remain active, giving them the control to age the way they want to age.
The idea for EngAGE developed when founder Tim Carpenter was working in the healthcare and aging industry, trying to change a broken system. Yet he did not see the change he desired. When he met developer John Huskey, who was building good-looking senior communities, the two partnered up. “We started throwing spaghetti against the wall, and some of it stuck (粘) on the wall. And we continue to do it that way and try almost everything,” said Carpenter.
Ninety-five percent of the population EngAGE serves is low-income. Seniors are surrounded by quality programs, learning opportunities, and state-of-the-art facilities. In Carpenter’s view, retirement is like college, a new stage when you are trying to figure out what to do next. It can be a starting point, with the spare time to try something different or revisit an old passion. Those seniors can build on their knowledge of a subject or start from zero. It is only the beginning of something, not the end.
McElroy concluded, “EngAGE is a place where members of old people are provided with endless opportunities. My son once asked, ‘How long do you plan on living here?’ and I joked, ‘They’re going to have to carry me out of here.’”
4. What can seniors do in EngAGE communities?
A Receive quality medical treatments. B. Learn the knowledge of novel writing.
C. Enjoy an active life with youngsters. D. Reunite with their former colleagues.
5. What does the underlined phrase “throwing spaghetti against the wall” mean?
A. Changing the aging process.
B. Tasting some overseas food.
C. Decorating the communities.
D. Testing out various methods.
6. Which statement might Carpenter agree with?
A. Seventy is the new twenty.
B. A good start is half the battle.
C. Never teach old dogs new tricks.
D. Passion serves as a driving force.
7. Which might be the best title for the text?
A. Carpenter’s Dream of Helping Poor People
B. EngAGE: A Place of Possibilities for Old People
C. McElroy: I’m Not an “Old” Artist
D. Community Is the Source of Strength

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time (屏幕设备使用时间) after school, including how much time they spent swiping their mobile phone, watching TV, Netflix, or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programs. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as“I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety (焦虑) compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic (学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
8 What were the students asked to do after they reported time spent on after-school activities?
A. Talk about their lifestyles. B. Introduce their after-school activities.
C. Report their mental states on a scale. D. Answer questions about screen time use.
9. What do the researchers find about teenage girls?
A. They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B. They take more active part in after-school activities.
C. They have lower levels of anxiety.
D. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
10. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4?
A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. High screen time is common among teenagers.
C. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
11. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study?
A. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
B. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D They allow teenagers to become better learners.

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’ t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Its abrupt appearance scared my horse, making it run off the track wildly. I spared no efforts to hold on as hard as I could and my dad was trying to keep up, extremely worried about my safety. Fortunately, minutes later, the horse stopped before a river, out of breath.Relieved, we looked around trying to find the track. However, it was nowhere to be found. So aimlessly did the frightened horse run that we got lost unconsciously.
We had no idea where we were and it got dark.
