(23-24高二下·广东广州·期中)阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一篇完整的故事。
Looking back at my life, I found that the most important event occurred when I was in 4th grade.
From the beginning of the semester, I started learning dancing every Saturday, but I didn’t do well in the first few months. Mrs. Smith, my dancing teacher, also my music teacher in my school, kept teaching me and helped me with every movement. But it always enhanced too slowly. I began to give up and canceled this class. A few days later, we had a music class at school. We sang songs while Mrs. Smith was playing piano. The beautiful melody suffused the whole classroom. Everyone was very earnest, looking up the teacher and following the rhythm. Although I was not good at sharing, I was singing really hard. All the things in this classroom seemed very harmonious.
We had a free class after singing. We just sat on our chairs and talked to each other. And Mrs. Smith started to talk about the school choir that she led very well.
I’ve seen some members before, who are excellent and graceful. I was imagining if one day I join in the school choir that will be really awesome: we have competitions every month; we do great performance every time; we get popular in our school. Those were just my imagination. I don’t think one day I can be one of the dancers. Just then, Mrs. Smith said my name in the class, “Angelina was in my dancing class. She was really hard-working and tough. I hope she could rejoin in my class and practice more to be a member of the school choir.”
Everyone turned back and looked at me with amazed faces. I turned tomato red. Mrs. Smith was pleased to laugh. We had a really silent moment. And then the bell rang, the students began to leave. There’s a girl walking up to me with some of her friends. Her name is Carrie, who is a piano player and also recommended to join the school choir. She faced me, and said to her friends: “Do you think she can really join the school choir? It’s unbelievable!” Her friends threw her a faint smile. I didn’t even react for this brief moment, and they left.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Within the time, I felt that there’s a strong force striking my pride. Carrie’s words echoed in my mind, and I couldn’t shake off the feeling of doubt she had planted. However, instead of letting it discourage me, I decided to use it as motivation. I started practicing even harder, dedicating extra hours to perfecting my dance moves and vocal skills. Mrs. Smith noticed my determination and offered to give me private lessons after school.
Paragraph 2:
Finally, because of my perseverance and efforts, I joined the school choir. The day I received the acceptance letter, I felt a surge of pride and accomplishment. Carrie and her friends were surprised, but they couldn’t deny the improvement I had made. Performing with the choir was an unforgettable experience, and it taught me the value of hard work and believing in oneself. Mrs. Smith’s encouragement and my relentless practice had paid off, and I realized that I could achieve anything I set my mind to.

Ballet is a way of life in my family. My elder sister Serena is now dancing at a top theatre and I am also a good ballet dancer at my school. Though my mom always wants me to follow in my sister’s footsteps, my love for ballet has been fading over the years and I have been eager for a new challenge.
One day when I left the dance studio after school, I walked past a gym and was attracted by the boxers (拳击手) who were fighting inside the boxing ring. I was deeply impressed by how hard they fought and how fast they moved.
“That is what I really want!” I told myself.
It was not a decision made on the spot. In fact, I had long been attracted to boxing. I even had the Oakwood High School Boxing Competition Sign- up Sheet in my backpack for two months. That was what I really wanted to have a try. But I was afraid to disappoint my parents, who had such high expectations of me when it came to ballet.
Tired of trying to keep up with my sister, I made up my mind to carve my own path. The next day, I gathered my courage and told Serena about my decision. At first, Serena thought I was just joking. But when she saw that I was serious, she replied, “You know Mom wants you to be a ballet dancer, right? Besides, boxing is only for boys, and you’re so good at ballet. Make best use of your strength, Kelly.”
“But this is where I want to put my strength,” I insisted, “and what exactly does ‘only for boys’ mean, anyway? Boxing is a sport for everyone!”
“You will learn what it exactly means soon enough!” Serena replied impatiently.
“I will stick to my own passion, no matter what it is!” I shouted back.
Touched by my determination, Serena gave in and promised not to tell my decision to our parents.

【答案】
It turned out that Serena was absolutely right. The boxing gym was filled with boys, all of whom were tough and strong. I felt somewhat out of place, being the only girl there. The initial training sessions were challenging, both physically and mentally. My ballet-trained body was flexible but lacked the power and endurance required for boxing. However, I persevered, driven by my passion. I knew that mastering boxing would not happen overnight. With each training session, I felt myself becoming faster and stronger.
Finally, the big day came. It was time for the Oakwood High School Boxing Competition. Standing in the ring, I reminded myself why I was there. As the bell rang, I moved quickly, utilizing the footwork I had honed in ballet to maintain balance and timing. My initial nervousness melted away, replaced by focus and determination. When the final round ended, I was exhausted but delighted. I had given it my all, and that was what mattered most. Later, I received word that I had won third place. More importantly, I had found my own path and embraced my true passion.

Lucy was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes, but I don’t have money on me,” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man. “Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, the smell so attractive. As she was eating, Lucy cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing. Actually, I was just touched by your kindness!” said Lucy as she wiped her tears.” Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!” Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Lucy sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered her mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why didn’t I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful. Why haven’t I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?”
On the way home, Lucy made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

Her mother opened the door but Lucy was so ashamed that she didn’t know what to say.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. Lucy couldn’t help crying and said “Sorry, mom, I know I have made a big mistake. I shouldn’t have quarreled with you. I shouldn’t have run away from home. Could you forgive me?” Lucy’s mother was moved, saying “Good girl, never mind, I also should make an apology to you for scolding at you angrily. I am very worried about you. ” Tears rolled down from both of their faces and they hugged each other tightly.

On a winter Sunday good for skiing, Sue arrived at their holiday chalet (棚屋) with joy. Sue’s skis were sticking out behind her. Mark, another skier, tripped over Sue’s skis. Before Sue could apologize, Mike shouted,“Your skis are in the way. You’ve got big smelly feet!” In view of his attitude, Sue ignored him. Mark lost face and was more angry.
Then Sue skied down the mountain. As a good skier, she didn’t fall over. Mark, along with his good friend David, was watching her with envy and anger. They were also good skiers but they didn’t know Sue very well. “She’s good,” David said. “But we’re better,” Mark responded with dissatisfaction.
The young people skied all day. They enjoyed themselves and forgot everything. On Wednesday morning, the young people were waiting for the ski lift (滑雪电缆车) when their teacher announced a ski race. The race would be arranged for the last day of the holiday on a long and difficult ten-kilometer piste (滑雪道). Everybody wanted to win! They went up the mountain, put on their skis and skied down the piste, practicing for the race. Sue skied fast, so did Mark and David. Obviously, these three became powerful opponents.
It was Saturday and the race was going to be held in the afternoon. Sue was hungry and left her skis at the side of a café. She sat down and ordered lunch. Later, David and Mark came in. They also headed to the side to put their skis there. Mark noticed Sue’s skis and aimed a kick angrily at them. Then he found a screw (螺丝) on Sue’s ski was loose, unsure whether it was caused by the force or it was like that originally. “Sue’s skis won’t work. We’re sure to win,” Mark said and pointed. They smiled knowingly at each other.

Paragraph2: Maybe feeling guilty or nervous, Mark fell down when Sue approached him.

【答案】Finally came the time of the race and everyone was excited. The atmosphere was electric as the competitors lined up at the starting line, their hearts pounding with anticipation. Sue, despite the incident with her skis, was calm and focused. She had checked them thoroughly and found the loose screw, but instead of letting it dampen her spirits, she used it as motivation to prove her skills. The race began with a signal, and the skiers surged forward, carving through the snow with precision and speed. Sue, Mark, and David were at the forefront, their rivalry driving them to push their limits. The crowd roared with each turn, the cheers echoing across the mountain as the racers navigated the challenging course.
Maybe feeling guilty or nervous, Mark fell down when Sue approached him. His face flushed with a mix of embarrassment and frustration as he watched Sue glide past him effortlessly. It was a moment of reckoning for Mark; his actions had backfired, and now he was witnessing the true talent of his competitor. Sue’s focus never wavered, and her determination shone through as she continued to lead the race. The other skiers, inspired by her resilience, gave chase, but it was clear that Sue was in a league of her own. As the race neared its end, it was evident that the victory was hers to claim, and the chalet community would remember this day as the one when Sue triumphed not just in the race, but also in the spirit of sportsmanship and integrity.

Among the beautiful items in an eight-year-old girl’s room, one caught the sight-a broken doll with several lines sewed on it. If the doll could talk, it would tell a story of two kids and the relationship among family members.
Amy has been living in the arms of her parents for five years since she was born, and she has been enjoying the unique attention. However, things began to change when the family had a new member, her little brother, Leo.
On hearing the news that she would have a little brother or sister, Amy felt at a loss. She didn’t know what it meant to her. However, with the birth of Leo, Amy began to know that she wouldn’t be the only kid. Seeing parents pay more attention to the little baby and hearing more and more people say her parents wouldn’t love her anymore, Amy became sensitive. Worried about her position in the hearts of her parents, she began to have incomprehensible resistance to little Leo. As time went by, Amy became more and more sensitive and concerned about her uniqueness and belongings.
The other day, Amy came back home happily with the praise from her teacher. Seeing Leo holding her favorite do II made Amy feel very upset. In her eyes, the doll was not just a toy, but a part of her childhood, and a symbol of being loved. “Give it back to me, Leo” Amy shouted. “No, I want to play” “It’s mine, not yours.” Amy stepped forward to Leo. “But I want.” Leo insisted. Leo’s refusal led to Amy grabbing the toy without hesitation. In the process of the struggle, the doll accidentally was split into two parts, broken. Leo fell onto the ground, crying loudly. Amy’s face turned pale, feeling like sitting on pins and needles. She was in fear that Leo got hurt and She was also afraid her mother would blame her, and think her an inconsiderate girl.

However, things didn’t go as expected. Mom came over in a hurry with an anxious look. Turning to Amy, her eyes filled with compassion, Mom said, “It’s okay, Amy. Accidents happen. We all love you and Leo equally. Remember, family is about sharing and understanding, not fighting over things.” Amy’s heart softened as she realized her mother’s words were true. She felt a wave of relief wash over her, knowing that she hadn’t lost her parents’ love.
With a better understanding of family and love, Amy’s attitude towards Leo changed. She began to see him not as a threat to her position but as a precious addition to their family. As they worked on sewing the doll back together, Amy taught Leo how to thread the needle and make small stitches. The process brought them closer, and Amy found joy in seeing Leo’s excitement at every successful stitch. They even decorated the doll with colorful patches, making it unique and special again. From then on, Amy made an effort to include Leo in her activities and playtime. She realized that love wasn’t something that had to be divided; it multiplied when shared.

Last year, I started doing some volunteer work for a charity in my town that helps disabled children. I found out that the charity needed to buy some new wheelchairs, but that they really didn’t have the money. So, I started to think about what I could do to raise money.
When I mentioned this to my friends, they said, “Well, why don’t you run the London Marathon?!” They laughed and so did I — we all know that I’m not an athlete at all. I’d never done any running before. But later, I started to think that it might not be a bad idea.
I approached the charity and discussed the possibility of participating in the marathon on their behalf. They were excited with the idea and agreed to appoint me as their representative. With their support, I purchased the necessary running equipment and began my training journey.
Every night, I laced up my running shoes and hit the sidewalk, determined to build my endurance. After a month of consistent training, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I could comfortably run nearly five kilometers. However, the reality remained: the marathon covered a challenging distance of 42 kilometers.
With the race only five months away, I intensified my training efforts. I pushed myself to the limits, knowing that completing the marathon was not only a personal achievement but also a means to secure funds for four much-needed wheelchairs. The thought of making a difference in the lives of disabled children motivated me to persevere.
As the race day approached, I filled my mind with determination and excitement. I knew that crossing the finish line would symbolize the end of my hard work and the success of a noble cause. With the support of my friends and the charity, I could run 25 kilometers during my training sessions.

【答案】However, when the big day came, I was not at all sure that I was ready. My heart was pounding as I stood at the starting line, surrounded by thousands of other runners. Doubts filled my mind, but I took a deep breath and reminded myself of the reason I was doing this. The gun went off with a deafening blast, and I tentatively started running, my steps hesitant at first but slowly gaining more confidence and picking up speed.
With every step, I fought against my physical limitations. My legs ached, and my lungs burned, but I refused to give up. I thought about the disabled children who were relying on me, and that gave me the strength to keep going. The crowd’s cheers encouraged me, and as I neared the finish line, I felt a sense of accomplishment like never before. Finally, I crossed the line, exhausted but elated, knowing that I had made a difference and raised the funds needed for those new wheelchairs.

It was a great pity when one day I heard that the Sunshine Bookstore was closing after fifty years of business. I was also heartbroken. The bookstore was a place where anyone in the neighborhood could drop by (顺便拜访) and be connected through their love of books.
When I hurried to the store, I saw the books were being packed into boxes. Sighing deeply, the store’s elderly owner, Thomas, told me how it was becoming difficult to run an independent bookstore. Most young people preferred to read e-books on tablets. Customers were being attracted by chain stores and online discounts. I tried to think of some words of sympathy, but I had to admit that the Sunshine Bookstore couldn’t stay in business much longer.
Childhood memories came flooding back. A bunch of us kids would frequently drop into the store after school, looking at the new books, or just chatting with old Thomas. He knew every book in the store and would always pick the perfect one for us. We spent hours reading, seated on the store’s old, but comfortable furniture. Thomas encouraged us to share our ideas and comments on the books by writing them on a large board in one corner of the store.
When I left the bookstore, it was becoming cold and dark outside. I turned to wave goodbye to Thomas, but both he and his bookstore were already hidden in a thick mist. It made me realize that the bookstore and all that old Thomas had given to the community could soon disappear for good.
A few months later, I was back in the neighborhood from my vacation and was surprised to see that the Sunshine Bookstore was still there and open for business. Its old brick outside hadn’t changed, but inside it was like a different world. Clearly, the Sunshine Bookstore was in good and creative hands.
I was told that the community had decided to work together on a campaign to save the Sunshine Bookstore. The campaign had been led by Martin, a salesman who had grown up in the neighborhood and who was helping Thomas run the bookstore.

In one area, some members of the reading club of our community were reading some books and discussing their plots and themes. Nearby, some customers were gathering around the shelves filled with stationery, pictures and other goods. The large board in the corner had been replaced by a big screen, where customers’ comments on the month’s best-seller were being displayed. The bookstore also became a place for literature-loving members to get together to participate in various community events, where people could share their experiences that couldn’t be downloaded.
“Where is Thomas, ” I said to myself. I suddenly saw Thomas, who was reading readers’ comments on the big screen, and joined him. “Well, as you can see, business knowledge combined with creativity has changed my humble bookstore into a modern one! I’m so pleased to see that everything I wanted it to offer to the community is still here.” Thomas said with emotion, tears welling up in his eyes. Patting him on the shoulder, I felt truly lucky for both Thomas and myself to still have the bookstore in the neighborhood to provide people with not only knowledge but also precious memories.

My story began in one autumn morning, as I rounded a bend on the path to school. I was 13 years old, and was on the way to school. It was the first time I had caught sight of a fox. Fascinated to the point that I forgot all fear, I dared to go up to it. I had never come so close to a wild animal. There was nobody else around, only me and the fox.
“Hey, fox!” I tried to greet it, though my voice was so weak it felt like I was saying hello to myself. It didn’t hear me. It stayed there and I watched it. My heart was beating fast. It was so cute. For a moment, I thought I might be able to touch it.
Throughout the day at school, I could only think of the fox at the big tree. At my return to the place where we met, I was sure I’d find it there.
And I did. This time I gathered a little bit more courage and called out to it,“Fox!”Of course it escaped. But that only made me long to meet it again. I decided that if I could find its cave (洞) and catch it, I would try to tame (驯服) it, making it my friend.
Thus, I spent most of my free time in the forests trying to find the fox during the following months. But I never saw it again before winter came. During the winter, I followed its footprints far across the fields. Suddenly I was alarmed by the calling of wolves near me. I ran away frighteningly, stumbled and hurt my ankle. It recovered very slowly, so that I had to stay at home during the winter, reading a book about animals of the forest and foxes.
When spring arrived, I was free again. I looked for fox caves and waited for my fox. To my amazement, it had got young ones but kept moving because of my observations; therefore I decided to observe the fox from a longer distance.

【答案】One day, as I sat quietly at the door, the fox cautiously approached. I held my breath, not wanting to startle the little creature. As it came closer, I could see the trust in its eyes, and I knew that it had got accustomed to my presence and that our bond had deepened. Over time, I was able to bring it food and even stroke its fur and occasionally, it would huddle peacefully against me as we sat on the green grass, like two old friends. And just like what I’d do to an old friend who seemed to need help, I took it home, thinking I could better take care of it and we could better enjoy each other’s company.
But to my surprise, the day after I brought it home, it escaped. It jumped out of an open window and in no time vanished into the woods. As I watched it slip away, with a nimbleness and grace that was a joy to behold, darting through the underbrush with a fluidity that spoke of its wild nature, I suddenly realized that perhaps the wild called to it more strongly than I ever could. I should never have tried to keep it as a tame pet, because wild creatures were supposed to be roaming in their own home, rather than being confined in mine. I didn’t see it then — not even with the help of that book about foxes, but now, on looking back, I know that my self-acclaimed “love” for it was not love at all, but possession.

Even now, I can still recall the moment when my dream finally came true during my last year of school.
The dream of becoming a member of my school cabinet took shape when I was just seven. Those school leaders were my role models as they always gave instructions, conducted activities and represented us to give speeches on school issues. So, for the next few years, I tried so hard to make it a reality.
When I was twelve, I entered my name. I prepared my election speech and then, on the afternoon that we all gave our speeches. Everybody voted. I was hopeful and I prayed that I would win. The next morning,at the school assembly I waited anxiously for my name to be announced. I was all set to realize my dream.
One by one, the names were announced and the whole school cheered as the girls with the highest votes walked up to the stage. I closed my eyes and waited for my name to be called. The last name was read and my name wasn't among them. I was totally brokenhearted. My dream had been shattered, and I just wanted to cry my heart out.
Then the reality struck me: I hadn't had a chance to win. I wasn't well known and wasn't pretty. Girls across the school hardly knew me. I just did not have what it took to win a school election. I was so depressed because I had nurtured this dream for a long time.
As I cried in my room that evening, I suddenly decided I was going to stop seeing myself as a failure. I decided that I would stand for elections again in my final year at school-and I would win.
I recognized that my competitors had a lot of things in their favor. Their personalities were their biggest strength. However, I had good grades, and I was friendly and helpful. And my biggest strength was the faith I had in myself to be a good leader.

【答案】One possible version:
That evening, I began my election plans a whole year in advance. The first target I wanted to achieve was to familiarize myself with the girls and obtain their recognition. I did everything I could to assist them whenever they were confronted with unpleasant situations. I also attended a course on effective public speaking and occupied myself with intense training on a daily basis. With time passing by, everything seemingly went to my advantage. When the election rolled around, I delivered the speech with more confidence than before.
The day after the election, every minute seemed like an hour while I waited for the results. The question haunted me whether my efforts would bear fruit. While the girls kept encouraging me, I felt anxious that my imperfect performance would cost me the opportunity to win the election. Then came the thrilling moment when the result was announced. Instantly the principal read my name, the students erupted into thunderous applause. It dawned on me that I accomplished more than I had dreamed of.

I sat at the breakfast table with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. “Mama, want to play?” “Not today, baby.” I shook my head. These days I could barely get out of bed. I was still recovering from an operation. I hoped for strength and happiness, but the future seemed so hopeless.
Suddenly, Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to our courtyard. Sure enough, there was a white dove seated in a rubber tree (橡胶树). It sat there for a few moments, and then flew away. Strange, I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.
When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying sticks. “Look Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They’re going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on top of the rubber tree.
Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he’d run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door (滑动玻璃门), talking to the birds while they worked. His happiness was influential. As much as I was sad, I couldn’t help but look forward to the doves’ visits too.
Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree’s broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew, throwing the doves’ nest to the ground. I heard the twigs (细枝) break apart.
I surveyed the damage. Nothing good ever lasted. I wouldn’t blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from the beginning. Again, though, the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they started again, as if nothing had happened.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
I knew I had to do something. The white dove and its mate had provided brightness during my dark days. Now it was time to help them in return. I cut a piece of hardware cloth, forming it into the shape of a nest and then securing the ends. I then hammered it into the wall next to the rubber tree. After I had finished all the work, there was only an hour before the doves usually made their visit. Matthew and I stood by the sliding glass door, waiting and hoping.
Paragraph 2:
“It works! The birds are back!” Matthew announced. Hearing my son’s excited voice, which was as clear as a bell, I looked up. There they were-swooping and circling near the nest, trying to add some twigs to their new home. A few weeks later, three babies broke free from their shells. “Chirp, chirp,” Matthew sang. I held him in my arms and kissed him, enjoying the happiness of the moment. Looking at their flittering shadows and hearing them chirp, I felt the dim grayness within my heart disappeared, replaced by the strength of life.

In Mr. Russo’s classroom, excitement filled the air as he announced, “We’re down to our final two spellers!” Jasmine couldn’t hide her joy, confident she was going to win. Finn, her competitor, reached out for a handshake, wishing her good luck. But Jasmine replied with a smile, “Luck has nothing to do with it,” leaving Finn embarrassed.
Then, it was Finn’s turn to spell his word. “Apology,” Finn took a deep breath and spelled, but he got it wrong. Jasmine watched closely, waiting for her turn. When she spelled “apology”, she stressed the letters Finn missed. After spelling the final word “Arrogant” (傲慢), Jasmine was announced the winner.
At lunch, Jasmine couldn’t stop herself from showing off as she walked by Finn and his friends. “How hard can it be to spell a few words?” she bragged (吹牛). Before they could answer, she walked away with pride.
The big day of the spelling bee showed Jasmine a different picture. Surrounded by older students, she started to doubt herself for the first time. She hadn’t thought about the tougher words she might face. A comment from Josh, a fourth grader, that “apology” was an “easy” word, made her worry. “Maybe I should have studied the list of words Mr. Russo gave the class,” Jasmine thought to herself.
As Principal Lopez introduced each of the spellers, cheers from each student’s classmates came from different areas of the hall. When Jasmine’s name was announced, most of Mr. Russo’s class clapped for her except Finn, who seemed to be looking at her angrily.
As the bee went on, Jasmine felt increasingly nervous with each word spelled right by others. Finally, it was her turn. Jasmine walked slowly to the front of the stage, her earlier confidence now mixed with caution. The audience watched, waiting. “Please spell ‘caterpillar’,” Principal Lopez asked.
Jasmine’s heart sank as she didn’t know the word.

After the competition, Jasmine opened the classroom door.

【答案】Jasmine’s heart sank as she didn’t know the word. As Jasmine stood before the microphone, her mind raced through possible combinations of letters, but “caterpillar” eluded her grasp. She hesitated, her voice barely above a whisper as she attempted the word, “C-A-T...” Her voice trailed off, realizing she had already made a mistake. The silence in the room was deafening. Jasmine’s eyes welled up with tears as she heard the buzzer signaling her error. She had been eliminated.
After the competition, Jasmine opened the classroom door. Instead of the triumphant return she had envisioned, she faced her peers with a sense of failure. To her surprise, Finn approached her with a gentle smile. “You did great just getting here.” His words were sincere. Jasmine looked into his eyes and saw genuine kindness. In that moment, she realized that winning wasn’t about being the best speller; it was about learning and growing. She nodded at Finn, a small smile forming on her lips. “Thank you,” she whispered, feeling a newfound humility.

【详解】段落续写:
由第一段首句“由于不认识单词,Jasmine的心沉了下去”可知,Jasmine在拼字比赛中遇到了不认识的单词,因此续写的第一段应该描述她在这一刻的感受和反应,以及她的失败经历。

It was two days before Christmas and young Maggie was told again that Paxton would not be returning.
Maggie’s father had found the weak deer a year ago and they had taken care of him. Maggie’s father, a vet, tended to the deer’s injuries and bandaged his foot. Maggie noticed that he had markings above his eyes that resembled the sun with rays of light. She named him Paxton and promised to take care of him.
Maggie couldn’t sleep that night and kept checking on Paxton from her window. The next morning, she rushed to the house to see Paxton. Paxton was still timid around her, but with time, he started eating carrots from her hand. Every morning before school, Maggie would feed Paxton.
Maggie wanted to keep Paxton, but her father explained that he was a wild animal and needed to be released after his foot was healed. Mr. Dotson could see his daughter’s affection for the little deer. That scared him, because he knew Maggie would never be able to say goodbye. So when Paxton’s foot had been healed, Mr. Dotson came home early one afternoon to set Paxton free. Maggie was overcome with sadness and called out to Paxton every day, hoping he would hear her.
In time, though, Maggie did come to understand that wild animals, even little deer, need to be in their natural habitat. But that didn’t change how much Maggie cared for and missed Paxton.
One day, as it started snowing, Maggie stood by a pond behind their house, feeling upset. The pond hadn’t frozen that winter, as the weather was warmer than usual. Mr. Dotson felt guilty about having not been more supportive of his daughter’s belief that she would see Paxton again. Although he didn’t want to give her false hope, he realized that no longer mattered, since Maggie was hurting and he wanted to help.
As Mr. Dotson walked outside to greet his daughter, he carried a pair of binoculars (双筒望远镜) with him. He and Maggie would spend the next couple of hours in the woods, where they searched for deer tracks in the newly fallen snow. As Mr. Dotson had expected, their search came up empty.
“I’m sorry we didn’t have better luck, Maggie.”

【答案】
As they hiked through the snow towards home, Maggie’s heart felt heavy. She couldn’t shake the disappointment of Paxton not returning to her. As Mr. Dotson and Maggie reached the edge of the woods, Maggie turned to take one last look at the place. At that moment, something caught her eye. A ray of sunlight reflected off the snow-covered ground, leading her eyesight deeper into the forest. There, standing among the trees, was Paxton, his sun-like markings standing out against the snow. Maggie’s heart skipped a beat as she watched him, a mix of joy and longing, filling her chest.
“Look! it’s Paxton!” Maggie shouted, her voice filled with excitement. “Look, Maggie, he seems happy and free in its natural habitat.” Maggie nodded. She knew Paxton was where he belonged, even if it meant they couldn’t be together. She realized her love for Paxton would always remain in her heart, no matter where he traveled. With a final wave to Paxton, Maggie turned to her father. As they walked towards home, Maggie carried with her a newfound wisdom. She understood that love isn’t always about possessing, but about cherishing and allowing others to follow their own paths. And she knew that the memories she shared with Paxton would forever be an invaluable part of her Christmas magic.

We had just gotten a little black dog who we named One-Eyed. We chose that name because he could only see out of one eye. Everybody wanted to do something for the dog: Feed him, teach him tricks and take long walks with him.
Everybody was so happy to have this active new addition to our family. Everybody, that is, except my mom and me. All my mom saw when she looked at the dog was someone else to clean up after. Messy, muddy, he pounced all over the house. All Mom seemed to care about was getting the house cleaned.
Being the youngest in my family had its advantages. I was spoiled or everyone was convinced that I was the cutest. But being the youngest also came with its fair share of troubles. I was often told what I couldn’t do and why. “You’re too young!” “You’re too little!” “You’ll mess this up!” They’d often say. I also knew that my family loved me. They always tried to protect me, help me and take care of me but I couldn’t wait to show them I could do things by myself.
Every time I asked my brother or my sister if I could pet One-Eyed, they would shout, “No!” Once, they even convinced me that I had so many bacteria; if I touched One-Eyed he would die! I really believed them. Once I even confessed (承认) to my mom that I touched the dog when no one noticed.
At first, my mom seemed very confused about what I was telling her, but then she realized that they were playing a joke on me to keep me away from the dog. My mom scolded my brother and sister, “You’d better stop laughing at this little kid!” Little kid! That’s exactly what I was. That really got my blood boiling. I was so mad; I wanted to break something!

【答案】Para1: To prove myself, I decided to give One-Eyed a bath alone. That afternoon, I took the dog and sneaked into the bathroom. “I’m going to give you a bath!” I announced. One-Eyed looked at me strangely, obviously not understanding what I was saying. I took my sister’s shampoo and poured the whole bottle into the bathtub. Then I coaxed the dog in and started scrubbing the dirt off him with our towels. However, things quickly got messy. Soap and water splashed everywhere; bubbles floated like tiny, soapy snowflakes. One- Eyed shook himself vigorously and barked excitedly, soon turning the bathroom into a wet battleground. It should have been my secret mission, but now, it turned into a disaster! Panicking, I ran out to seek help, only to find my mom at the door.
Para2: My mom was pleasantly surprised to see what I had done to One-Eyed. I thought my mom would punish me, but she was just standing there and laughing. “Well, well, what do we have here” she chuckled, wiping away tears of laughter. I stammered, admitting everything. Instead of scolding me, she bent down and gave me a gentle hug,” I knew you just want to help. “Straightening up”, she suggested, “Now shall we clean up the mess together, young man ” “Yes, ma’am!” I nodded. Even though we never actually had a conversation about my being the youngest, I think Mom understood I was trying to make my own place in our family. Bathing the dog might not sound like a Declaration of Independence, but for a six-year-old, well, it was my best shot.

“When I grow up, I’m going to travel on my own,” said my little daughter, Sophia, reading her favorite picture book in the sunshine. Her blue eyes sparkled as she looked at the beautiful pictures. “Well, I think you can!” I said, believing in her ambitions.
Being a hard-working and reliable child, she could help do the housework skillfully. She had the potential to make her dreams come true. However, we were poor farmers, and all profit had to go back into the farm to keep it going.
When Sophia was ten, a tornado (龙卷风) struck Texas, destroying our farm. We were forced to deal with everything that we faced. This disaster completely changed our lives. My husband, Steve, was disabled by the tornado. After trying and failing at several methods of earning income, finally he decided to become a baker (面包师).
We purchased a small bakeshop, fully equipped, and moved it onto our farmland. In fact, our bakeshop business did very well. Regrettably, Steve did not. His disability was so severe that after several months of trying he simply could not continue. The bakeshop closed.
While our family was going through difficult times, the dream and spirit of Sophia was not lost. She was doing well in school, and I smiled the day I read Sophia’s essay entitled, “Things I would like to do.” Topping the list were these words: I want to travel someday. Again I whispered, “Maybe you can someday.”
A few years later, Sophia started high school and enrolled in a foreign language class in her second year. This class occasionally organized a trip abroad. One day, she came home from school, hardly able to control her excitement, and said, “Mum, our class will arrange for us to travel abroad.”
“Fantastic!” I said. “You can achieve your dream!”
“But it would probably cost a lot of money to go,” she said.
She was right. My salary paid the bills, and nothing was left. Steve was still unable to work. Our hearts sank deeply.

【答案】
Sophia’s face lit up the moment she thought of her father’s bakeshop. Her eyes twinkled with pleasure. She told us her plan to restore bakeshop business, sustaining our family’s livelihoods and earning enough money to cover the trip. We accepted her offer without hesitation. Immediately, she prepared everything, which made us shocked from the bottom of heart. Then she turned to her father and learned how to bake. After many failed attempts, her efforts paid off. She could make a variety of baked goods, making quite a name for herself.
Orders came flooding in. Many coffee shops, restaurants, and convenience stores stocked Sophia’s goods. Every day, individuals waited outside the shop for goods in a long queue. The bakeshop business was booming again. Most importantly, she could achieve her dream of travelling on her own using the money earned with her hands. She shed tears of joy. We were both proud of her and expressed our appreciation. Whatever happened, she always had a dream leading her forward.

“Attention, please. This is Radio Three, the one o’clock news. A female wolf escaped from the Monterey Zoo this morning, which is believed to be still at large in the Monterey area. If hungry, the wolf might be dangerous. If anyone sees this animal, please inform the nearest police station.”
Buried in making lunch before her baby woke up, Mrs. Smith switched the radio off with a little attention. In order to avoid disturbing her sleeping baby, she pushed the pram (婴儿车) into the garden, left it under a tree out of the sun as usual and went into the kitchen.
Several minutes later, she came to the back door to see if everything was all right. To her a little surprise, there was a big “dog” standing by the pram, looking at the baby. “That’s the Johnson’s dog. I’ve told them they ought to keep that great animal in their own garden. Those dogs are a bit too much like wolves.” Mrs. Smith thought. Then she went cold. “Wolves. What have I heard about wolves?” She was sure she had heard something about an escaped wolf on the radio. She looked hard at the creature by the pram. The more she looked, the more certain she became. It wasn’t the dog from next door. Like it, but different. It was as big as the dog, but the color was greyer and it looked thinner.
At this moment the creature put its front legs on the side of the pram and looked at the sleeping baby, licking its face. The baby woke up and began to cry quietly. Mrs. Smith wanted to scream, but she knew it would be wrong to do that. What should she do? “Inform the police,” the radio had said. But that meant leaving the garden and going to the telephone near the front door. She was sure that somehow she must get the wolf away from the pram.

【答案】范文
It occurred to her that the piece of meat she had bought was on the kitchen table. Very quietly she slipped into the kitchen and came back with the meat. The wolf was still standing over the pram licking the baby’s face. She threw the meat into a corner under a tree well away from the pram. As the meat hit the ground the wolf looked round. It hesitated for a moment, then left for the meat and began to eat it. Mrs. Smith stole to the pram and immediately picked up the baby and ran into the kitchen as fast as possible. She sank down into a chair, crying with relief.
Holding the baby to her in the kitchen, she telephoned the police. When the police arrived, she told them what had happened, and took them to the kitchen window. The wolf was lying on the grass, still eating the meat. The police said they had sent for a man from the zoo and would arrive in a minute. Five minutes later, two men from the Monterey Zoo came with a net and a small cage. Before long the wolf was safely in the cage and taken away, the rest of the meat still in its mouth. It was her calmness and bravery that saved her baby.

On the first day of sixth grade, I sat in my quiet homeroom class and observed all the people who I would eventually befriend and possibly graduate with. I glanced around the room and noticed that the majority of the middle class kids were dressed in their nicest first day of school outfits.
My glance stopped on a shy-looking girl in the back of the room. She wore worn-out, mismatched clothes. Her hair was unusually short and unwashed. I caught myself thinking, "That’s disgusting (恶心的). Doesn’t she know what a bathtub is?" As I looked around, I figured others were probably thinking the same thing.
The teacher began checking the attendance, each person casually lifting his or her hand as names were called in turn.
"Terri Jackson?" the teacher asked.
Finally we heard a submissive answer from the back of the room, followed by the sound of rubbing cloth. We all shifted in our seats to see what had happened.
"Scary Terri rubbed her shirt!" one boy joked. "Eww, I bet it’s a hundred years old!" another girl commented. One comment after another brought a roar of laughter.
I was probably laughing the loudest. Sadly, making Terri feel insecure made me feel secure and confident. It was a good break from the awkward silence and uncomfortable first day.
Terri Jackson was the joke of the whole sixth grade that year. If we had nothing to talk about,
Terri’s trip through the lunchroom was an entertaining conversation starter.
At my twelfth birthday party, ten gossipy girls were playing Truth or Dare (真心话大冒险), a favorite party game. We had just finished a Terri Jackson discussion. It was my turn at the game.
"Umm... Sydney! Truth or Dare?" one of my friends asked.
"How about a dare? Bring it on. I’ll do anything." Oh, if only I’d known what she was about to say.
"Okay, I dare you to invite Terri Jackson over to your house next Friday for two whole hours!"
"Two whole hours? Please ask something else, please!" I begged. "How could anybody do that?" But I have no choice. The next day, I cautiously walked up to Terri.

【答案】The next day, I cautiously walked up to Terri. My heart raced as I approached her, uncertain of how she would react. As I nervously extended the invitation for her to come over to my house on Friday, I could see the surprise flicker across her face, almost disbelief shining in her eyes. But then, to my relief and joy, her expression softened. I’d never seen her flash her toothless smile so brightly. The rest of the day I had a good feeling, and I was not dreading the two hour visit as I had before. I was almost looking forward to it. Friday rolled around quickly. Terri reached my house on schedule.
I found myself actually enjoying her company. We chatted about her family and her battles with poverty. I realized how wrong I had been to judge her based on her appearance. Towards the end of our visit, I mustered up the courage to apologize for my past behavior. Terri’s forgiving smile warmed my heart, and from that moment on, I made a promise to myself to always stand up for her whenever bullying occurred. We parted ways that day as friends, and our bond only grew stronger with each passing day.

I can’t be late. Not today! Malia thought as she raced across the park. Today her hula (裙舞) teacher would choose some students to dance at the luau (夏威夷派对).
Malia reached the end of the park. “Hello, Uncle Charles,” she greeted her teacher. All the dancers called him “Uncle” in the local way. Malia joined her hula sisters beneath a shady monkeypod tree. She pulled on a colorful skirt.
Uncle Charles knelt on a woven mat and beat a rhythm on a drum. The dancers warmed up with basic hula moves. Malia placed her hands on her waist and stepped back and forth.
“Swing your hips (臀部),” Uncle Charles called out. Malia stood in one spot and swung her hips side to side.
After the warm-up, Uncle took out his ukulele. It was time to practice their special dance for the luau. Malia took a deep breath and bent her knees.
“Remember to use expressions. You want to tell the story with your hands and faces,” Uncle said. Twang, twang went the ukulele. Malia lifted her arms. She and her hula sisters danced in a row across the grass. They stretched out their arms like birds in flight. Their movements matched the meaning of the happy song. There was no time to be nervous. Malia was too busy watching her hand motions and remembering her footwork. She also remembered to smile.
“Together! Watch your line,” Uncle called. Malia’s smile grew. She had made no mistakes. She spun to the rhythm of the ukulele and danced over to one side, as if she were on areal stage. Oh no! Malia had danced in the wrong direction. Malia felt her face burn, but she kept dancing and smiling. She turned in time to the music and danced in the proper direction—two steps behind and two beats late.
The music stopped, and Malia shook her head. “I’ll never be picked now.”

The class was over for the day. Malia found herself alone beneath the monkeypod tree. She let out a deep sigh, with her gaze lost in the distance. She had wanted to dance on the stage with her hula sisters. She had longed to wear a colorful skirt and flowers in her hair. Now it just seemed a dream that was far out of reach. She would have to wait forever for her next chance.
Paragraph 2
Suddenly, Uncle’s voice interrupted Malia’s thought. “Hi, Malia. Why don’t you go home? But before you go, I want to know if you would like to dance at the luau.” Malia couldn’t believe what she heard, widening her eyes in surprise. “Oh yes, of course. But, Uncle, I made a mistake. I danced in the wrong direction. I missed the steps and the beats!” “Yes, I know. But you kept dancing and didn’t give up. You may not be the best dancer, but you always express the song’s meaning. Today you showed the happiness of the song with your wonderful smile. Expression is an important part of hula. So, shall we meet right here, beneath the monkeypod tree, tomorrow?”

Lily’s Gift
Lily loved her mom more than anything in the world. Her mom worked hard every day to provide for Lily and her little brother, Jake, She was a nurse at the local hospital, and she often had to work long hours and night shifts. Ella knew her mom was tired and stressed, but she always had a smile and a hug for her children.
Lily wanted to do something special for her mom this Christmas. She wanted to show her how much she appreciated her and how much she loved her. She decided to buy her a gift, something that would make her happy and beautiful. She had seen a necklace at the mall, a silver chain with a heart-shaped pendant that had the word “Mom” engraved on it. Lily thought it was perfect for her mom.
But the necklace was expensive. It cost $50, and Lily didn’t have that much money. She only got $5 every week as her pocket money, and she had to save some of it for school supplies and snacks. She also had to help Jake with his homework and chores, so she didn’t have time to get a part-time job. Lily decided to save as much as she could from her pocket money. She also looked for ways to earn extra money. She sold some of her old toys and books at a garage sale. She offered to walk her neighbors’ dogs and water their plants. She even gave up her birthday money and asked for no presents.
It took her months to save enough money for the necklace. She had to resist the temptation to spend it on candy, movies, or clothes. She kept her goal in mind and reminded herself of how happy her mom would be.
Finally, on Christmas Eve, she had enough money. She ran to the mall and bought the necklace. She wrapped it in a shiny red paper and put a bow on it. She wrote a card that said, “To Mom, with love from Lily.”

“I saved up for it, mom. I wanted to give you something special. I love you so much,” Lily said. Her mom hugged her and kissed her cheek. She put on the necklace and smiled. “I love you too, Lily. This is the best gift ever. Thank you,” she said. Lily felt a warm glow in her heart. She had made her mom happy. She had given her a gift that showed how much she cared. She felt proud. (23-24高二下·山东菏泽·阶段练习)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was an average student in my early elementary years. I came home with a steady flow of B’s, C’s and the occasional F’s in second language subjects. I was told that I wasn’t applying myself and, as every report card I ever brought home clearly stated, I talked too much.
I didn’t write when I was supposed to write. I talked to others while the teacher was giving instructions. That I could recite what she had said to the class while I was talking was not helpful because I had a negative effect on my classmates’ learning. So I regularly brought home disappointing report cards.
My parents and my teachers didn’t know what to do with me. Punishments didn’t seem to work. Rewards didn’t seem to either. And, frankly, I don’t think I knew what I could do to “apply myself”. And I certainly didn’t know how to not enjoy talking with my classmates! What I knew was that I talked too much. Until grade 5.
That autumn, we had a sudden change in teachers as our elderly teacher took a medical leave. In his place, a young substitute (代课老师) arrived — Mrs Royal. She looked like she was freshly out of university and seemed too young to be cast in the role of being responsible for a class of tween, but there she was, charged with a lively group, and me.
I don’t remember many details of that year except the afternoon when I got my first report card from her. She handed out the report cards right after the afternoon break and invited us to look them over. Then she let us know that we could all talk quietly amongst ourselves while she called each student up one at a time, in alphabetical order (按字母顺序), to discuss our report cards with her.

Then it was my turn to talk with her.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I looked over my report card, expecting the usual result. But to my surprise, her feedback was different. Instead of focusing on the negatives, she pointed out the improvements I had made. She acknowledged my efforts, however small, and encouraged me to keep working on my weaknesses. I double-checked and made sure it was definitely my report card. Even though we had been given permission to talk amongst ourselves, I had very little to say to friends as I waited anxiously for her to call my name.
Then it was my turn to talk with her. She began with a warm smile, “You have any questions for me?” I remember looking down at my report card and saying, “I don’t get A’s, besides, nowhere on here does it say I talk too much.” She said, “I figured you already knew you talked too much, so I thought I could tell you something different. As for the grades, you earned the A’s.” From that day on, I knew I was capable of “straight A’s” and could have qualities other than that of a student who talked too much in class.

My mother, a kind and considerate lady, would help others in need, though our family was not rich. When I was young, she worked as a housekeeper in the home of a wealthy businessman.
Every day, after tidying up the rooms at the businessman’s house, she would cross the street to buy groceries. As she passed by a row of low rented houses, she would always have a look at an elderly man who collected scrap (废品). The old man, in his seventies, always carried a bag. He lived in a tiny house with a small window. My mother couldn’t help but feel a sense of sympathy whenever she saw the old man eating dry bread, accompanied by a bowl of water. Thus, she would bring him old newspapers, empty cans and beer bottles, along with some food. To the old man, those were precious gifts. The businessman saw my mother’s good behavior and kept it in mind.
I learned from my mother that the poor old man lived alone. His small room was almost empty except a worn mat and a pile of collected scrap. His only way of showing gratitude to my mother was through a humble smile on his face. I once asked my mother, “Why are you so nice to the old man?” She looked at me and answered affectionately, “Because he looks like my father in the countryside.”
As the New Year approached, the businessman visited his relatives abroad, leaving my mother to watch over his house. He paid my mother double wages for her efforts, and prepared extra money for the old man.
The old man frequently appeared in various neighborhoods with his bag, and his business seemed to be going well. He not only collected plastic and cardboard boxes left at doorsteps but also threw the litter beside them into the bins. Watching him walking away, with his white hair blown in the cold wind, my mother’s heart ached.
My mother told me that she decided to knit (编织) two woolen sweaters, one for her father and the other for the old man. “Perhaps the old man had no children, but it was the New Year, and he deserved a gift, too,” she said.

【答案】
On the first day of the New Year, my mother approached the old man’s door, with her knitted sweater, food and some money. It was too early in the morning and the door was still closed. So she quietly hung the sweater with money wrapped in it on the door. Besides, she put the container with a bowl of dumplings outside the door. Then she went back home amid the sound of “Happy New Year”. My mother didn’t know how much time had passed before she heard a knock on her door. Curiously, she opened it to find the old man standing there, his face blooming like a flower.
“I asked many people to find out where you live,” the old man said, holding the sweater my mother had given to him. “Happy New Year! I can finally give you a gift,” the old man said. “I don’t know who gave me this brand-new sweater along with some money. It’s so dense, and it’s perfect for you to keep warm in the wind.” The sweater held in the old man’s hands was like a treasure. My mother’s eyes blurred as she said, “It’s just my gift for you.” At that moment, the warmth of their mutual care transcended the cold winter, weaving a bond that was as strong as the sweater they shared.

Having already obtained many medals since starting to play golf at the age of ten, Larry, at sixteen, had developed into one of the best young golf prospects in the country. And he was elected the most valuable player of his high school team. Following his junior year, Larry matched himself against seventy-four of the nation’s best junior golfers in national competitions, and he performed better than the majority of them.
Larry’s performance drew the interest of coaches from some of the best college golf teams in the country. Wanting to stay close to home, he accepted a scholarship to the University of Houston. “Just think, everything will be taken care of, and I’ll be close to home. And it won’t cost us anything,” Larry told his mother, Missy. “And I’ll be playing for one of the best college teams in the country.”
Fighting back tears, Missy hugged her son, knowing he had worked so hard to win a scholarship to make things easier for her. That summer, Larry worked even harder than ever on his golf game, hitting hundreds of balls daily and taking a part-time job in a golf club at night to prepare for college.
Late that summer, unfortunately, Larry had a terrible car accident. “I’m sorry, but we have to cut off your son’s arm below the elbow (肘),”one doctor told Larry’s parents. “Is he going to be all right?” Missy asked. “We don’t know,” the doctor answered.
Upset, Larry’s father wondered about his son’s reaction to the loss of his left arm. “How will Larry ever get along without golf?” he thought. He also realized there was a far more pressing matter than an unclear golf career. “They’ve got to save Larry’s life,” he said to himself. “That’s all that matters now.”
After almost ninety days, Larry’s condition finally improved and he was no longer in danger. One night Larry awakened, found his left hand missing, and cried helplessly. His father raced to the hospital. “Dad, how am I ever going to play golf?” he asked.

I knew the fearful day would come sooner or later. However, it came too fast. I was waiting in the dental (牙齿的) clinic, nervous about what was to come.
Seeing my nervousness, my parents told me to sit up, and to take deep breaths to keep calm, which worked. However, the peace was short-lived. Almost immediately, my name was called, signaling my turn had come. I pretended to be deaf but my mother gestured at me to stand up. I forced myself to step forward and tripped over a toy left lying around by some kid. My clumsiness (笨拙) got me the attention of everyone in the room.
I had refused my parents offer to accompany me. I meant to show them that I was brave enough to face the difficulty on my own. Thankfully, I forgot my anxiety as I looked around the dentist’s room. Tools of different sizes were arranged neatly in a tray (托盘) on the tiny table which was connected to a chair with buttons and a light hanging right over it. I didn’t look at my dentist in the eye as I took my place on the chair nervously. I almost jumped out of the seat when all of a sudden the chair moved and I was lying down facing the bright yellow light.
The dentist spoke in a relaxing voice behind her mask. Everything was going smoothly and I was quite proud of myself. Then something went wrong. I was picking up the cup of water placed next to the chair for patients to rinse (冲洗) their mouths when I caught sight of the dental drill. Panic related to a bad childhood experience involving the drill kicked into me, and I spat out the rinsing water, right into the surprised dentist’s face. December 16, 2009 was the worst day of my mother’s life. It was the day I told her that her thirty-six-year-old daughter had stage Ⅲ breast cancer. I will never forget the look of despair in her tear-filled eyes as I told her. Seeing my mother sob uncontrollably broke my heart. It was one of the few times in my life that I saw my mother weak and vulnerable (脆弱的).
Since I had been diagnosed with advanced breast cancer, the doctors had a heavy-duty plan of attack to beat it, which would mean a double mastectomy, five months of chemotherapy, ovary obliteration, and five weeks of radiation. It also meant that a fiercely independent single girl who lived alone was in serious need of some help taking care of herself.
Thankfully. I was blessed with my own personal army of family, friends, and co-workers who had offered to help me out with whatever I might need, including meals and rides to doctors’ appointments. But.as grateful as I was, there really was only one person who I wanted by my side - my mom. My mother lived more than 300 miles away, but didn’t even give it a second thought. She was going to be my primary caregiver, chauffeur, personal chef, nursemaid, communications liaison, counselor, and shoulder to cry on. No one else in the world could fill her shoes. It was a job that only she could do.
The night after my first chemotherapy treatment is forever imprinted in my memory. I was never so sick in my entire life. I couldn’t even keep down a glass of water. And after-hours spent in the bathroom, I weakly lifted myself into bed, weeping, “Please, take this away from me. Please make me feel better.” At that moment, my mother crawled into bed with me, wrapped her entire body around me, and cried with me. Just like when I was a little girl, her arms enveloping me made it better.

Grace was 8 years old when she heard her mom and dad talking about her little brother Jack, only a baby. He was very sick and they were struggling to make their ends meet. Only a very costly operation could save Jack, but there was no one to lend them the money. She heard her dad say to her tearful mom, “Only a miracle can save him now.”
Hearing the word, Grace went to her bedroom, took all the coins from her little money box and counted it carefully. After counting the coins three times, She slipped out of the room and made her way to the drug store.
She wanted for a long time before the female pharmacist (药剂师) turned around and asked her, “What do you want?”
“Well, it’s about my brother,” Grace answered, “He’s really sick. And I want to buy a miracle.”
“I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist.
“His name is Jack. And he has something very bad growing inside his body. And my dad says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?”
“We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I am sorry. I can’t help you.” the pharmacist said
“I have the money to pay for it.” With these words, Grace poured out all the coins from her pocket.
At this time, a well-dressed man in uniform from Chicago hospital asked the little girl. “I am selling the miracle you want. Tell me how much money you have.”
“47 cents.” Grace answered in a low voice. “That’s all the money I have. But I can get some more if I need to.”

My name is Wen Yu, but you can call me “Fish”. I want to talk about the time I went to the US to meet my American pen pal Drew, but first I need to go back a little bit to explain things.
I was a second-year junior high schooler when my English teacher, Ms. Gao, had us experiment with a pen pal program set up through our school. This was an amazing opportunity at the time since it meant we could use our English skills to communicate with other teenagers the same age as us around the world through email! Still, I was a bit shy and nervous since I knew my English was pretty poor; but at the same time, I was excited to make a new friend and was determined to improve with this new opportunity presented to me.
Ms. Gao assigned me to write emails with a boy named Drew in the US. He was from a city called Cincinnati in Ohio. I knew a little about the biggest cities in the US— New York, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago— But Cincinnati? I had no idea where it was. Maybe it was somewhere near one of those cities?
As we continued to talk through email, I was surprised to find my English was slowly improving. I found my English going from stiff and formulaic (刻板的) to more natural and casual to match the way he wrote. I even picked up some slang (俚语) words along the way! We got to know each other’s hobbies and interests as well as our dreams and hopes for the future. Drew seemed so nice, and I found myself wanting to visit him someday and see what Cincinnati had to offer. He, too, wanted to visit Beijing and try out the local food I had told him so much about.
We continued our email conversations even after the program ended. Drew told me how long his summer break was going to be and said he’d show me around if I were to ever visit. To my surprise, that opportunity would come sooner than I thought.

My younger sister and I loved to play the piano, so when the annual winter concert was canceled, we were disappointed. We had been looking forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of our best pieces. “You and your sister can perform at Carriage House Senior Living (CHSL),” my mom suggested. “The seniors there would love your music and you could each play more than just two pieces.” It seemed like a win-win situation because I’d play more songs and also have the chance to cheer up the residents with some lively music.
My mom called CHSL and made arrangements for my sister and me to perform. We were told we could play the piano during the Sunday dinner hour in two weeks. In the coming days, I worked hard to polish up fifteen pieces that I thought the crowd would enjoy. My sister and I decided that first I would play three songs and then she would. We would take turns playing until the end of the hour.
When the day finally arrived, we reached CHSL, and stepped into an entryway that overlooked the big dining room. Right at the entrance to the room stood the piano. The dining area was filled with round tables. At nearly every table several gray-haired people were seated, enjoying an early dinner and the company that the crowded room provided. Regardless of the conversations going on at various tables, isolation (孤独) hung like a dark cloud in the room.
Almost immediately, we were greeted by an old woman who introduced herself as Phyllis. “You two must be here to play the piano,” she said smiling. When we nodded, she seemed pleased and told someone to get a microphone. “I’ll introduce you to the audience,” she said. She told us that she was always the one in charge of doing things like that. I asked her if I could introduce myself and she agreed. While we were waiting for the microphone, I pressed a key on the piano and it produced a beautiful sound.

As a new fourth grader, Gina was in Mrs Melton’s class. After a month in class, she had a new classmate, John. The boy and his three younger brothers, together with their poor parents, had just moved to the town where Gina lived. When the school presented the boys with the school supply list for all fourth graders, they were upset. They had no money, so they hardly had the supplies required. They only had a few sheets of poor-quality paper and a pencil each.
As a result, except Gina, all kids in class made fun of John, who felt so embarrassed and lonely. Gina was sad to see it and felt sorry for John, so she decided to do something. She asked her mother Linda for new pencils, crayons, paper, etc. Without hesitation, Linda agreed. The next morning, Gina got up much earlier than usual. Although Linda found it strange, she didn’t ask too much.
When Gina hurried to school, she quickly put her new supplies into John’s desk before other classmates came in. Later, John was amazed and confused to find the supplies. He looked around, but Gina focused on her book, pretending to know nothing. John was disappointed; he failed to find the angel. After class began, other kids in class were also surprised by John’s new supplies and couldn’t laugh at him anymore.
After that day, Gina began to come home on a regular basis asking for school supplies. She didn’t tell that she would give them to John, fearing Linda wouldn’t agree with it. And as usual, Linda just dutifully provided whatever she needed, never questioning her.
After ongoing requests for items that should have easily lasted a long time, Linda became concerned and asked her, “Gina, what are you doing with your school supplies?” The girl would always respond with an answer that satisfied her. One day, after supplying the same thing only a week earlier, Linda became annoyed with her.

Dolly was my 9-year-old sister. She was mother’s favourite, always doing what she was told and never placing a foot wrong. Sometimes I didn’t like her. But she was my younger sister. I couldn’t do anything about it. And on the whole she wasn’t that bad.
Two weeks ago, on her birthday, I gave her a goldfish as a present. She loved it, named it Peppy and watched it swim freely in the glass container every day after school. She really enjoyed the delight the little angel brought. But recently I found the goldfish a little listless, staying at the bottom of the container most of the time.
One day after lunch, Dolly looked up at Mum and said,“Mum, I want to go to the lake. We go there on Sundays.”
“We can’t go today, dear. I have something else to do.” Mother said as she walked towards her and took the bowl away. Dolly looked a little unhappy, with eyebrows frowned.
“Shama,” Suddenly, Dolly whispered to me, leaning as close to me as her small frame would allow her while still sitting on the chair. “Would you come with me?”
I felt hesitant, but her unfamiliar stubbornness made me curious. What did she want to do at the lake? Still for the red fish? There was red fish in the lake. She had seen some coming to the shore every Sunday.
“Are you sure? Mom will be mad if we get caught.”
“We’ll come back in time before mom knows it.” Dolly gave a mischievous(调皮的) smile and slid out of her chair. I followed her out of the kitchen and came to the front door. Luckily, it didn’t lock. But as soon as we got ready to force out of the door, Dolly turned back and ran into the house again. I couldn’t shout out her name for fear that Mum could hear me but waited nervously.

POOR DAVY
It was break time at the village school, surrounded by acres of vibrant flower fields. The bell had rung, and the children had run out into the bright sunshine, wild with laughter and fun.
All the children but poor Davy. He came out last, very slowly, but he did not laugh. He was in trouble, and the bright, golden sunlight failed to cheer him up.
As he walked across the yard, his eyes fell upon the vibrant flowers that bloomed in vivid colors among the rolling green fields. All kinds of violets (紫罗兰) nodded their heads in the breeze, as if trying to cheer him up. Yet Davy’s heart was too heavy to appreciate their beauty.
He walked across the fields, and sat down on a stone behind the old maple. A little bird on the highest branch sang just to make him laugh. But Davy did not notice it. He was thinking of the cruel words that had been said about his ragged (破烂的) clothes. Tears welled up in his eyes, and streamed down his cheeks.
Poor Davy had no father, and his mother had to work hard to keep him at school.
That evening, Davy took the path home that led across the fields and through the woods. The sun was setting, casting a golden hue over the flowering meadows. But Davy’s heart was still heavy, so he walked with his head bowed.
Davy did not wish to trouble his mother; so he lingered a while among the trees, and at last threw himself on the green moss (苔藓) under them. Just then, his teacher came along. She saw who it was, stopped, and then kindly asked,“What is the matter, Davy?”
He did not speak, but the tears began again to start. “Won’t you tell me? Perhaps I can help you.” she asked gently, kneeling beside him.
Then he told her all his trouble. When he ended, she said, cheerily, “I have a plan, Davy, that I think will help you.”

Li counted his gifts one more time as he put a robot-shaped eraser into each envelope. “Twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two.”
“Do you have one for everyone in your class?” Mom asked.
“Yep! And one for Ms. Zhang,” Li said. “I’m ready for the party tomorrow!”
When Li got to school the next day, he saw a new girl in his classroom. She stood near Ms. Zhang and looked around shyly. “This is Fan,” said Ms. Zhang. “Will someone volunteer to show her around today?” Li raised his hand. He liked showing the new kids around and helping them feel welcome.
“Thanks, Li,” Ms. Zhang said. “Now let’s get busy with our work so we’re done in time for the party.” That’s when Li realized he didn’t have a gift for Fan. No one else would have one either. Li pictured his classmates’ desks covered with gifts while Fan’s desk was empty. He had butterflies in his stomach.
At break, he was careful not to mention the party as he showed Fan around the playground. At lunchtime, he walked Fan to the lunchroom, still worried about what would happen at the party. Fan had brought a packed lunch, so Li showed her where she was supposed to sit and introduced her to some of the kids at her table. Li picked up a big plate and joined the rest of his classmates in the lunch line. It was “breakfast for lunch” day, his favorite. As the lunch server placed a heart-shaped cookie on Li’s plate, Li suddenly remembered that kids often included candy hearts or other treats with the gifts they exchanged. This won’t be a happy Children’s Day for Fan with no gifts or treats, he felt upset.

Tionae Thomas couldn’t be prouder of her 14-year-old daughter. Plenty of people overlooked a boy sitting alone under a tree in a shopping center parking lot. But not Tionae’s daughter. The 14-year-old girl stepped in to help the stranded(滞留) boy. And the Internet is applauding this girl for her kindness!
Tionae and her daughter were on the way home. But as they passed a shopping center, Tionae’s daughter begged her to pull over. She’d noticed a boy who looked like he was most likely in elementary school. He sat all alone under a tree in a small island within the parking lot.
“It’s too hot, mama,” the girl told her mom.
So, Tionae pulled over and her daughter got out, asking the stranded boy where his parents were. But the boy didn’t know.
The kind girl let the stranded boy use her cell phone to give his dad a call. Then she suggested he move from his spot under the tree to the front of a nearby Rite Aid. She told him it would be safer. At the same time, the girl left him her phone number and told him that he could call her if necessary.
Getting back into the car with her mom, the girl asked to wait to make sure the stranded boy got picked up. She hated the idea of leaving him alone. And because of the warmer temperatures, she wanted to get him some water.
Plenty of others must have noticed the boy. Maybe they left him alone because they didn’t want to disturb or scare him. Maybe they just thought someone else would do something. But Tionae’s daughter was the only one to step in and help.
Para 1: Two days later, the girl received the boy’s call.

It was one of those super cold Saturdays in New York. I woke up with my son Bisher, who just turned 13 and was in 6th Grade. He was well organized and had an alarm clock so he woke up on time. When Bisher was taking a bath, I had already made breakfast for my family and we were ready to leave. My pet dogs Milo and Jego were having their mealtime too.
I was going to my parents' farm with my family in my truck, like I always do during winter. It's an hour's drive from New York City to the farm. I was driving a Mitsubishi Triton and the dogs were at the back of the truck.
An hour later, when we all reached the farm, Bisher got so excited that he started to talk to the dogs and imagine what fun they would have during this holiday. When I opened the fence, it was 2:15 pm. In no time I saw my parents' dogs—Jamie and Rocky—rushing into sight, wagging their tails and barking and howling to show their excitement. With all this noisy welcome of dogs, my mom, who was in the kitchen, hurried to open the main door and hugged us tight. After all the meeting and greeting, I went into the room and kept all our luggage.
My father is a farmer, my mom is a housewife, and they live on the farm. That night my family were enjoying my mom's special recipe of fish and chips with vegetable soup and sharing old stories of our childhood memories. At that very moment we heard some strange noise of chickens clucking (咯咯叫) and Jamie's continuous barking. Feeling brave, the three of us—my father, Bisher and I—started to follow the barking.

“I’m going to drive for Uber!” my mom said. Her smile was practically wrapped around her head.
“Oh… you mean to be a driver?”
I was confused. My mother was great at making sales and packing snacks. But driving competently and using technology are different.
I was half-expecting her to abandon this idea before it fully spread its wings. But then she asked me to help her download the app. Mom had sworn me to secrecy because she thought my dad and sister would judge her. She was probably right. Under the cover of midday, while the rest of the family worked, we downloaded the app and watched the training videos.
We practised driving on Tuesday morning. I ordered the ride to our house while we sat in the car one block away. It did not go smoothly. The navigation system was too quiet. The screen was distracting. The GPS didn’t know the best route. It was confusing. It was stressful. The ride ended in tears. “Don’t worry,” I said. “We can try again tomorrow.”
One hour later, Mom decided that she alone was ready for the road.
On her way home from grocery shopping, she turned on the app, which matched her quickly with the first passenger named Matthew. As she made her way toward him, the panic from the morning appeared. The silent navigation. The screen confusion. It was just too much.
Naturally, she turned off her phone. She did not cancel the ride service. She did not contact him to explain. A few minutes later, Mom turned on her phone to check if it worked well. She had several missed calls from Matthew, who had been watching her on his screen and seen her drive in the opposite direction for the past five minutes.

Alan Robinson and Walter Macfarlane have been friends for 60 years. Born in Hawaii 15 months apart, they met in the sixth grade and played football together at a Honolulu prep school.
Macfarlane never knew his father, and Robinson was adopted. Separately, they sought answers about their ancestry (n.祖先,血统). Macfarlane turned to family history and DNA-matching websites to learn more about it after unsuccessful searches on the internet and social media. “So then we started digging into all the matches (n.匹配) he started getting,” said his daughter, Cindy Macfarlane-Flores.

In July 1971, I was taking a summer class in literature on the campus of SUNY Oneonta in upstate New York. Professor James walked into the classroom and announced that he had invited a special guest to class, but his guest had been delayed.
“Who’s coming?” someone asked.
“Alex Haley, who is the author of one of the books you have read for this class,” he said. “I need a volunteer to meet him in the lobby of the administration building and accompany him here.”
To my amazement, my right hand shot up as though it had a mind of its own. What was I doing? I wondered. I never volunteered for anything.
“Thank you, David,” Professor James said. “You’d better leave now. He’ll be arriving any minute.”
As I walked across campus, my anxiety grew as the massive administration building appeared ahead. I feared that I was about to embarrass myself in front of this famous gentleman by asking stupid questions. I reached the front steps and climbed them slowly.
As I pulled open the heavy glass door, I realized why I instinctively raised my hand to volunteer for this job. This man was what I wanted to be: a writer. He was living my dream. I could learn from him. I paced back and forth across the polished lobby floor until a black man with a briefcase entered the building. He stopped and scanned the lobby. His gaze fell on me.
I approached him and confirmed he was Mr. Haley. We shook hands and then began our walk across campus. I was struck by how approachable this man was. My fear was replaced by curiosity and purpose.
“Do you mind if I ask you a question?” I said. “No. Not at all,” he said.
